Madam President...thank you for all the info...we love your channel:) A tip for you...my husband used a sharpie marker and put a few black dots on each color bar of our chicken xylophone and our chickens really do “play the xylophone” now! It’s incredible...I think the chickens peck at it thinking the black dots are ticks!!! ❤️🐓🎼
We used litter boxes for our nesting boxes back in the day and they worked well. I love the clear top box, that's nice. Chickens playing the xylophone, is like the Warner Bros frog.😆
🤣🤣🤣 That’s exactly what I thought but most of my viewers are younger than me so I didn’t mention it Hahahaha “henlo my baby, henlo my honey, henlo my rag time gaaaaal”
This is a great idea. I had an open kitty litter box for a dust bath, however, they would constantly fling everything out of it. So I gave up as they just dust bath under their coop anyway. However, with winter, it would be nice to have one of these in addition to under the coop as it might be a little warmer for them than the dirt on the ground. Kind of like a mini greenhouse dust bath. LOL!!! Off to Amazon!
That's a fabulous idea. I'm also concerned about the mess the dust bath will make . Definitely ordering one of those. .... As for the chicken xylophone. I thought my chickens weren't playing theirs either but one night when I opened my bedroom window I heard jazz coming from the coop. I'm pretty sure they're also hiding a piano in there 😂
Dear Mrs. President, I’m new to raising chickens. I’ve had 4 chickens since Mid April and they are just starting to lay eggs, yay! Anyway, I have a covered runner and a coup my hubby built. I let them out in the yard for about 4-5 hours a day. With winter coming, I appreciate your video. My question; if you have a covered runner why do you need to put the dust box in the coup instead of the runner? I’m thinking I will make a dust box for my chickadees but I will need to put it in the runner, is there a problem with that. Like I said, I’m new to this. But I did save one that was egg bound and am so thankful she lived through that ordeal. Glad I found your video. 😁 My coup is not a walk-in coup, not for me anyway!
Cute litter box! But I don't think it's a good idea to put DE in this dust bath, becausel the de dust will be confined in this small area with your chickens, making it even more dangerous for their respiratory systems. Just a thought 💕
Yes. I was just about to say the same thing. Having asthma, I am overly cautious about potential respitory issues. But i do intend to give the DE a try in our new coop. And put it in the dust bath. I would not expect the de to be anymore risky than breathing wood ash, lime, or even any other kind of dust that is in the chicken environment.
@@GaylatheGreatGales No it will not reduce risk. Inhaling any kind of powder, dust, smoke, etc. runs the risk of damaging the lungs and respitory system.
I’m wondering is I can add DE to their fermented feed. I give my dogs DE in their food with broth. Broth wets the DE so they breathe it and keeps the worms away. Worms are a huge problem in the country but not since they get DE a few times a week. So … would it keep internal parasites down in birds, too?? And, is it safe??
Love the idea of the clear top!! Plus keeping the mess inside like that is genius!!! My chickens sing duets, so I'm SURE your chickens can play the xylophone! 😂😁
As long as they have plenty of space around the dust bath and are not enclosed in a small space then the chickens won’t have great inhalation if the diatomaceous earth dust!
Thinking of getting one of these kitty liter boxes for my chickens. Questions: 1. Is it big enough mto accommodate my Barred Rocks? I have 10 hens and 2 roos. 2. Will my hens lay in this box instead of their 2 nesting boxes??? Thanks for sharing.
To be honest, some of my silly chickens have laid in it occasionally!! But that was when my other chickens were broody and hogging the nesting boxes. Mostly they love it to dust bathe in and yes, it's big enough for the barred rocks.

madonna gott there’s lots of shots of them taking a bath in their older box in this video, and you can see them take a bath in the new one in a video titled “Preparing My Chickens for a Snowstorm” at 8:00. It takes them a while to figure out the bath and since I post weekly it was hard for me to get shots of it. :) Let me know how it works for you! 🐔

@@WelcometoChickenlandia I have used it under their straw, in the dust bath and wet on their wall all at different times, it seems to make them cough and sneeze each time. Seems to always be the same chickens and not the others. They seem to me bothered by anything with dust, but not dirt. Maybe they have asthma?

Ooooh love the clear top box for chicken dust box. great idea!
Thank you! So far, the little chickens use it and the big chickens use the other one, which is fine!
Great idea. I may just have to get one of these liter boxes
That is one nice litter box 🐥🐤🐣
Isn’t it? It comes in all different colors too. Only problem is it’s kinda pricey for a litter box!
Look forward to an update with them using it. The colour looks great in your coop.
Thank you! So far it looks like only the little ones have gone in it. The big ones prefer their other dust box! We shall see...
What a great idea during the winter, love it so going to try this. Thanks for sharing new friends here, let’s connect, Blessings

Going to have to figure something else out for me indoor chickees
That is awesome thank you so much!
You are welcome!
May be a silly question but fo they ever poop in it? How often would you have to change it? Thanks in advance im new to the chicken world
Hey I love your videos. I think you should make one on all your birds. By the way the coop makeover is gorgeous.
Thank you! I really appreciate it. ❤️🐔❤️
how often do you change or add to a dust bath?
Our birds are dust bathing in the coop. It’s tough in the cold months here in Washington. More snow coming. Ugh. Happy New Year Dalia
Thank you! Happy New Year to you as well. :-)
The dust doesn't effect them breathing it in being it's enclosed?
Great idea, very informative video. Not sure I would have thought of a litter box. 👍👍
That’s why they pay me the big bucks (lol not!) Thanks for watching!

I believe food grade DE should reduce that risk greatly. I would still recommend being very careful though

My 9 week old chics do not take dust baths. How do I get them to take one. I used sand, peat moss and DE in a container in their run. Help
I keep hearing some chicken people mention diatomaceous earth. Does it have to be food grade DE, or can it be the normal one?

LOL definitely when I'm not looking!
Can I Field of Dreams it? If I buimt a dust bath will they come?
Haha yes they will come. Or you could build a little one in a shoe box and the quail will come LOL.
Love this see through cat litter box. I don’t see the link in your description for it. Could you add it plz.

Was that the entire 50# bag of sand?!
Wood ash as in anything out of fire place?
yes
where do u get the sand for ur dust bath?
You can find it at lowes or home depot!

Did the babies ever use the dust bath
Yes! I think I put a link of them using it in the description. It took them a couple of weeks to figure out what it was LOL.
I watched both videos and still haven't seen a chicken get in the bath! I will try it though..

Why not just use a clear tote? Especially because my chickens and roosters are much larger than yours... just a suggestion.
You totally can! It would work great.
