Save The Planet with a High Mile Hero - Ford Mondeo ST TDCi

  • How do we save the planet? By making more stuff, out of harder to find materials, whilst destroying the environment to get a new 'Green Badge' car every three years....? Or should we look after what we've got? Geoff goes for a drive in a high-mile Ford Mondeo ST TDCi and contemplates how old cars can contribute to saving the world. There's also some controversial new ideas on badging numberplates, a deep dive into some service history and some general conversation on buying, driving and owning high mileage cars.

It's the way to go. They've paid off their environmental debt, all that needs to happen now is keeping them alive, and with careful attention this is totally possible. There's a lot to be said for the proud feeling you get behind the wheel of a sweet-running car thats done >150k, especially when you've had a hand in keeping it that way.

This is true! I recently bought a newer car, but I miss my old 07 320D - the other thing is that you don't worry about leaving it at the front of a car park and it getting dinged versus a newer car, so very often your journeys are actually effectively quicker with the older car!

31/01 23, Keep that a secret ! We all know current E V ers ignore the fact their kWh generation has already spewed out pollution at source. Owners becoming aware of more frequent tyre replacements too - due to extra battery weight. ( Making extra pot holes too ! ) MVL - Forthcoming EV Car Tax now due - as recently announced. Ford's Top Brass announced upcoming 3000 or so European Job Losses as they go all electric saying EVs are 40% less expensive - cheaper - to manufacture. Did'nt say why they cost so much more to buy ! World's largest car manufacture, Toyota, say they will not be going All Electric. Expected Blackouts too risky.

Hi Geoff. Great video about the high mileage Ford Mondeo ST diesel. It’s a pity we won’t be seeing many of this particular model in London this September as these are ULEZ non compliant. Mayor Khan has completely changed the London map for those high mileage cars that have been carefully maintained. Shocking

Have owned an ST220 (the 3.0l V6 petrol stable mate of this car) for 5 years. Its the second ST220 I've owned. Both did/done over 110k miles and were/are the perfect practical fun family car. Wise words as always Geoff! My own car I’ve had for 21 years and it’s 31 years old and I use it as my every day work truck…it’s an old 200tdi defender and has given great service with over 300000 miles on it now! The wife drives a 2001 discovery 2 which my father ordered new and was passed on to us around 6 years ago… that’s coming up to 200000 miles and it’s taken us in some great family trips from southern Spain right up inside the artic circle and over to Finland towing an old army trailer… we will never get rid of these cars despite the bastards trying to make it hard for us! We all need to stick together on this and when the time comes action is needed.
They hold many memories..my eldest was collected from the hospital in the discovery when he was born and he also learnt to drive in it and even passed his test… the lady had a shock when she walked out and noticed a 2.2t discovery sat in the test bay!

    • @PillSharks
      @PillSharks ปีที่แล้ว

@@markfox1545 yes, have I spelt it wrong? Lol it’s not my strongest subject.. apparently I have something starting with D but I find that even harder to spell.
Me and my wife have always found it important to show both our boys the world so since they were very young we’ve taken them away to many places by flying, traveling by Land Rover or hire cat or with our sailing boat… we’ve not gone a great distance in that as it’s slow going!
We had 3 weeks off and decided wild camping in Scandinavia, so we mounted the roof tent on the Sankey trailer and hooked that on our trusty old disco and off we went! 9 countries in 2 weeks and 4700 miles, I lost count of how many ferries we used. I filled the old disco up in Portishead and managed to make a filling station in Salzbergen in Germany…that’s around 530 miles on one tank of fuel, loaded and and pulling a trailer….do that in a EV!
We caped in various places on the way up and drove a couple of hundred miles into the artic circle before turning east as I’ve always wanted to drive down the Baltic Sea coast.. we popped into Tornio, Finland for a burger and a look around and then headed south..
took the ferry back into mainland Europe, spent the night in Berlin and then a quick hop into Poland for cheap diesel and then home via a camp in Germany!
Only problem we had was the alternator failed in a nasty part of Sweden and I managed to find a spare and fitted it in services car park.. that was a 5 week old Denso unit from Japan! So the only part to let me down was Japanese which made me feel happy! Lol
      Hope that helps.

I love well kept high mileage cars. Had an Impreza wagon with 277k on the clock and ran like a champ when I sold it. I've had 28-ish cars in the 10 years I've had my drivers license, from pretty much every car manufacturer, but the GC Impreza is the one I've felt the most at home in so I'm in the middle of building another Impreza right now, this ones a Turbo, with 110k on the body and 140k on the engine (had the headgaskets done before putting it into mine), but I'm building it to be my forever car, did all the rust repairs, will be drowning it in cavity wax and twice-a-year lanoguard application, everything is being refurbed or replaced with new parts, I want to crack 500k in that car at some point. High mileage cars have stories to tell, and for me it's infinitely more interesting to see a well kept high mileage car racking them up like a champ and being used than a low mileage garage queen that sees the light of day only on car show weekends.

I suppose that's a fair point but sometimes people try get away with not doing the parts that only need doing after like 80k or 100k miles until as late as possible, and so you want to check those things as soon as. MK5 GTIs for example, a lot of them being sold at the moment with water pump and belt changed apparently at a certain mileage, but not exactly great when it's 5 or 6 years ago and needs to apparently be done like every 3 years regardless. A lot of modern cars don't seem to go through service every year now, which is bit odd to me as my fam put every car through a service + MOT at the same time yearly and have done that for 20+ years that I've been around at least. Maybe intervals have become 2 years. I heard something about MOTs potentially being proposed to being spread further apart, but I feel it is essential we keep it a yearly check. Far too many cars on the roads just scraping by on basic stuff

@@Stallzyx I never trust any service history. I always service a car when I buy it regardless of history. I also do chains or belts. I bought a corsa a couple of years back with receipt for timing belt kit and work carried out on a chain driven engine 🤣

I disagree. Most cars should make it to 100k miles these days. I look at plenty in that region of 100k and they've been serviced every 20k miles. It's enough to get them to 100k, maybe it's had some issues, but no way would I consider it wanting to make 200k, which is high mileage these days. If I'm buying 100k it best have excellent service record.

my 2011 mk4 Mondeo estate is not far short of 200k, will probably make 220 by the end of the year. Even being near poverty spec it has plenty bells and whistles, cruise control, speed limiter etc, and 75 to the gallon on a run, 55 local running. Being a Pug powerplant spares are cheap and plentiful. Handles well on my local country lanes, cruises comfortably on the motorway, Being only the 1.6 tdci it does require a little work if really wanting to hustle, but most people wouldn't notice, its only because I am a community responder and advanced driving instructor it gets made to hustle more than the average driver would. One of the nice things I really like about it, its different. By then BMWs & VAGs were outselling mondeos, so it has a little extra rarity factor, especially as a huge estate.
I'm completely with you, keep old stuff running, it's greener. Less treating such expensive things as disposable consumer goods like a razor or a ballpoint pen. Cars are generally the second, or most expensive single purchase a person will ever make (house being first), so to replace them every few years seems pointless. You don't move house when the front door needs repainting.

Hey Geoff I made a comment on one of your other videos about my Ford s max tdci and the hoard of kids 🙈😂
I bought the car in 2016, 1 lady owner from new on 121,000 miles, 2007 plate. It's now on 209,000 miles and never ever misses a beat.!
To add to that, as I've a history of fast cars and had to get this to accommodate my family, I had to have it mapped and a couple of tweaks to make it less boring to drive 👀. I did this around 4 years ago now and even on 209k it still pulls like a train for what it is, returns respectable mpgs and is reliable with it.
To be honest, I've never been one to "keep up with the jones's" so I've no desire to replace it for anything new for driveway kudos from the neighbours. I leave that mugs game to everyone else 👍 And I couldn't think of anything that ticks all the boxes that this car does to replace it with to he honest.
I'll drive it and drive it and drive it some more.
Good news from taxi driver mates, one I know had a galaxy with thr same engine, it was on over 350,000 miles and still going strong so why would I get rid now?!

Yes I have a smart phone, I'm using it to reply to you right now, but it's a couple of years old with a cracked screen and I still rock it. Why? Because it works lol. It still does everything I need it to so I have no need to replace it until it dies 💁‍♂️
My toy in thr garage as my name suggests is my long term project. It's 33 years old in September and still alive. A lot of them were traded in for the newest one, then that one was traded for the next newst one when bmw released it. A lot were sent to China to return as white goods 🤦‍♂️
Mine has had a full restoration and to allow it to still have legs in 2023 it's now hiding a 4.0 v8 👀

Amazing car that has certainly outlived its carbon footprint. I hope you enjoy your MK3 as much as I love my MK4.

My daily is a 2005 Volvo with 220k, runs very well, I was going to sell it a few years back when I bought another more recent Volvo but opted to keep it as a commute/daily drive "banger" since what i was offered for it was less than what the tyres were worth. It does around 50mpg, has been reliable and fairly cheap to maintain. Many of my friends and coworkers keep asking me why I dont just scrap it. They dont seem to be able to compute when I say that scrapping a perfectly good working car that keeps doing its job and has long been paid for is just stupid.
Regarding the build quality its also true. The plastics feel a lot cheaper on my other more modern Volvo. It has developed a ratling noise on the dashboard way before it reached half the mileage of its "older" brother. It still feels rather nice, but its quite obvious to me even on other cars from other makes that the build quality went downhil after 2009/2010.

Heading to sleep now so I'll try and watch when I get up later, but agree with what you say in the start of the description. It's so confusing why new cars need to constantly be made, they are safer and have some benefits, but like the price tags are ridiculous too. Been looking around at a large dealer / car supermarket and there's new 22 plate Fiesta ST Lines which are costing £25k used, meanwhile you can pick up a solid 5 year old car for £12k or so, or even cheaper if you go a bit older. Personally I'd go for the ST220 petrol if I was looking at this generation Mondeo, or a Zetec S 2.5 v6 if you can find them, or look at Focus ST170, MK1 Audi TT, MK5 Golf GTI. Considered getting something like that myself but reliability and safety is paramount for me right now after not having a car for a few years and my last one being rear ended by a large truck, so I appreciated the safety of the modern car and emergency call features etc

The problem is manufacturers and the inland revenue don’t make money out of us so the con about newer cleaner cars especially the catastrophic effects to the environment of building EV’s is spun, we’re being mugged off by a disposable culture instead of a repair/recycle culture because they couldn’t bleed us of more money. love what you’re doing it’s right up my street and it makes driving more fun, people passing my driveway often are curious and chat to me about my cars they wouldn’t if a clone modern SUV was parked on it.

I bought my car when it was 5 months old back in 2011, it had under 3000 miles on the clock, it's got well over 140,000 miles on now, it still starts up first time, running costs over and above servicing and tyres, one set of front coil springs and a wheel after hitting a pothole on my way into work one night, it split the wheel, didn't burst the tyre, I got into work and when I left the tyre was flat, I tried to pump it up and the air was escaping through the crack in the wheel, I replaced the battery last year, and it's had two diesel particulate filters, one at 70,000 miles and one at 139,000 miles so the lifespan of a filter is around 70,000 miles, rather ironically, for such a small car, it's got scrapes on all four corners, all done in car parks whilst I've not been there, and I always try and park in an end space away from where others park, yet it still got clobbered, am I going to change it? eventually, when it stops working

During this time in 2004, I bought a mk2 mx5 1.8 in razor blue brand new. It hardly came out of the garage because of my cycling. A neighbour up the road who used to manage a garage always used to comment his disapproval to me about not using the mx5, keeping it garaged up and hence in his eyes doing it harm. Today, it has done just over 7 k miles at nearly 19 years old. Looks brand new and runs very well after it's last service and MOT, as do I, even after hundreds of thousands of miles whilst vigorously rotating my knees. Now ya can barely make 100k before the timing is starting to rattle, CVT is acting up, valves are carboned beyond belief, turbo is wonky etc. Hardly serviceable by your regular shade tree mechanic. Have to essentially become a tech to maintain the cars without going broke. Late 00's is where my comfort zone ends 300k+ mile cars.

Direct injection is new technology and some are getting it badly wrong including Honda, Toyota engines with direct injection don't seem to have any issues either. Carbon build up is an issue but you can easily get your engine carbon cleaned it only needs doing every 100k miles just like standard belt or chain work.
