I had one in silver, drove it as a taxi for 8 years, it broke down once (cam shaft sensor, 5 minute fix). Loved that car, so reliable and huge amount of space in the back, it was like having a van. Plus they came with a 7 year warranty.
I had a black ‘06 2 litre TDCI LX as a taxi back in the 00s. Brilliant car, drove and handled well. Much better than the Skoda Octavia I currently drive.
I hope that whoever does buy it doesn't run it into the ground, I like to see cars like this go on for as long as possible! It's well worth looking after in my opinion. Fun episode again, cheers!
I had about ten of these as company cars as Area Manager for Ford Greece. It’s a fabulous car, looks great, it’s quick, handles brilliantly, spacious, reliable, I’ve done over 200k miles in Mondeo’s, one of the ten was exactly this car, same colour but a Ghia. Matt, gold happens to be an all time classic Ford colour. In the late 70’s, early 80’s Fiesta, Capri, Granada Ghia’s, the launch colour was always gold.
just a shame ford just sucks ive owned 3 fords of which 1 brand new from the lot with only 21km on the dash and it was trash it was a 2022 focus and i hated it it drove boring wasnt comfy and the other fords were at the garage almost monthly so i went back to VW group and i have no issues i bought a 2020 vw troc 2.0 tsi with dsg and its awesome its got 240hp (it has a stage one) and its comfy looks good seats are comfy and its just way better id drive ford if they were good and reliable
My dad still drive one of these. Mondeo 2.0 Ltr with manual transmission. Back then he bought it brand new. From 2001… His mantra: “The car is perfectly fine and never let me down!”
Had one of these and regretfully sold it, was a 2l TDCi Ghia 53 plate estate (and I was 21 at the time). Would love to get one in that spec again 🤩 such brilliant cars!
Completely agree. Loved my 55 plate two litre TDCI Ghia hatch 6 speed 130 in silver. Sit at motorway speeds all day sipping diesel. Nice spec, torque when needed and comfortable.
My late father had a Mondeo as a company car and when my Sister was learning to drive she would practice in it going around a supermarket car park. It was a green one.
I have an 05 2ltr Auto hatch. Owned it since it was 9 months old. Only 62k and still sounds like a sewing machine and pulls like a train. Apart from the road tax hit, and it does like a drink, I will be distraught when it rots away, blows up, doesn’t go into Drive one day etc etc. such a damn good versatile workhorse
I had it's granddad, in 1974 not only was it gold, estate and base spec, but I was 24 years old. It was the last car I let my dad " advise" me on. It was he said great for camping you will get everything in that. I sold it after 2 years and bought a spitfire and I got all my gear in that.😂
I really enjoyed this one. It doesn't really matter what car it is. There is something captivating about listening to you while you do your job and talk to camera. Thanks for your stories, insights and I hope you'll continue doing this for some time. Don't retire from this too soon :D
I absolutely love it when you try to keep these old girls on the road 👏🏻 plenty of life in that car for someone, a totally useable, practical and fairly cheap to run motor! I wonder if we will be saying the same about any of the EV’s in 19 years time 🤔 I doubt it some how! Nice one Matt👏🏻👍🏻
Of course we will. There'll be be plenty of EVs that have been looked after by their owners just like the odd Mondeo. A good mondeo of that age is an exception, most of them are dead by that age.
I got some of those as rental cars back in the day - liked them for driving well, being frugal but spacious and, well, cars you could park almost anywhere without fearing for them.
I saw a gold 2005 Astra Estate this morning and thought exactly the same thing, “Who buys a gold car?”, my answer was it was probably the fashion, like buying a rose gold phone a few years ago.
I've worked in the motor industry many years. Shades of gold have always been a popular colour on executive models, going right back to the earliest metallic paints.
@@davidperry3531like this Mondeo there is nothing wrong with the colour just fashion changes, new phones seem to be come in pastel shades and in a year or two they’ll be pushing something else.
Proof as if needed that if you cherish your chariot then it will reward your efforts. I’d run around in a car like that all day long! Well done, Matt. You deserved a bit of luck! 😉
U might laugh but many yrs ago I had a 1999 1.6 LX saloon in burgundy with a sunroof I might add for my 1st car my grandfather bought it for me I bloody loved the thing ! 😂 there a alot better than a vectra or a passat in my opinion anyways. Brilliant video really enjoy the cheap car video's 🚗 👍
05 mk3 mondeo,I had a 2ltr diesil for 5 yrs,it was a great tow car (130 bhp) it handled really good,my son ran the car for 2yrs,it was one of the best cars I’ve ever had
One of the best company cars I had as a service engineer. 57 plate 1.8 diesel engine, never broke down, very comfortable to drive and nice big fuel tank. Very quick off the mark as well. Great video to watch, brings back the memories of driving the Mondeo.
Long time ago l set up a business, money was tight but l didn't want to look bare arsed in front of clients, I bought a 3 year old 2001 Mondeo from a company fleet. One of the best cars l've ever owned, ok no image, but it was reliable, respectable (then) and ate up the miles in comfort, they were so underrated.
As an ageing blue oval fan boy this was just a brilliant find. Slightly before the proliferation of separate modules that controlled even basic systems, this is a vehicle that the guy under the railway arches can still repair. Just where have we gone wrong with car manufacturing nowadays?
Same here I'm 65 and had Ford's all my life, escorts mk4 cortinas, focus, fiestas,Mondeo,Kugas, transits (all eras) includes company vans which had done well over 250k and hand on heart none of them have been problematic the secret has been regular servicing
@@xlfivemy father was a garage owner and mechanic, died last year at 95. He was a Ford maniac. His courtesy car was a 1.3 ohv mk3 cortina which was so underpowered but did a genuine 300k before he scrapped it. I remember him buying it as an ex company car at 120k and after he did the suspension and servicing, I drove it and thought how tight it felt but very underpowered. A testament to well maintained Old Ford’s of the day. All had lovely gearboxes
My local mechanic under the arches was known to everyone as "Staf" and he was the spitting image of Leland Palmer (father of Laura from Twin Peaks if you remember that). "Whoever sold you that car wants putting against the wall and shooting" was one thing he told me. He rang me at work once and his chilling words were "Are you sitting down?".
I have a 20 Yr old mk1 ford focus, nothings ever broke. Even the air con works and feels new to drive. The ford's of this generation were fantastic Imo. Cheap to fix and built way better than expected. Great to drive too. They over engineered those mk1 focuses and Mondeos to save the brand are just very well thought out and sturdy.
My dad had a 51 plate Ghia X saloon model with the 2.5 V6 in green. Got written off when a lorry crashed into it while it was parked at his work in about 2012 or so at 90k miles. Was a comfortable car but drank fuel.
My father had a 03 Mondeo Estate Zetec S in Oyster. He loved the car apart from the low profile tyres which were very expensive & it seem to go through them quickly. He bought it at 6 months old & traded it in after 125K miles & 8 years of owning it. its still going today & does about 2K a year according to MOT history.
Well done, Matt, on an excellent return on this one! Keep 'em rolling these think-out-loud narration videos on the car-buying process. We all appreciate the education in inspection / testing car-buying process and money management.👌🏽🌟
Yep loads of tradesman near me swapped to estate coz of the emissions zone was supposed to be vans, the zone never happened, so I'm starting to see more vans again. But yep ideal for a decorator or gardener.
No one likes a soggy bottom lol. That model of Ford mondeo is a very good solid built car I have a customer who has a gold Ford mondeo saloon 05 plate with roughly the same mileage and it’s solid as a rock. Now if u compare it to a jaguar x-type of the same year it will be absolutely rotten as a pear, same chassis different badge.
I know many people turn their noses up at the Mondeo but after fifty years of driving various cars I can honestly say that my Mondeo has been the most reliable I've had. Straight through the MOT for the last 8 years with only the odd tyre required.
Honest vehicles are great, the Belingo and the Mondeo are just good honest cars, this week end I got to drive a friends old convertible Karmann Ghia Convertible, it was slow and loud, you were sitting on the ground 55 mph felt like 120, you felt and heard everything in the road and in the air, no Lamborghini driver has ever had a bigger smile on their face, it was wonderful and took you back to a time when you knew you were in a mechanical conveyance. Had a friend that had a US Modeo and vacationed in Scotland, rented a Mondeo and said it was much better. It was a manual transmission I think he said it was a diesel and had tons of pulling power, much better feed back from the steering wheel and better brakes than the US version. My dream is drive a MGB or a TR6, probably never happen, but there was a time I’d have sold my soul for one!
The US never got the Mondeo 🤔in the 90s they had what was known as the Contour which was technically a Mondeo underneath but they changed so much for the US market that it can't even be compared. And later in the 2010s they had the Fusion which was again a Mondeo but not called such and with modifications and larger engines for the US market. But they never had the proper Mondeo
@@poppyneese1811 yh they look basically the same cos the 2010 onwards Fusion is a rebadged Mondeo. But it's a bit different in the suspension and drivetrain compared to the Mondeo
One of the best cars ever made, in my opinion, mine was still going strong at 186000 miles, when I traded it in, my brother had one which had done 310000 miles👍
I had a 51 plate 2.0 petrol estate Mondeo In burgundy red, had 164k on it but was a great car, loved driving it and was so reliable never broke down once
Its amazing how sentimental one can get over a car key. I had one on a mark 1 focus too. Instantly recognised it. That method of opening and closing the bonnet was genius. Secure and dont need to worry about a flimsy cable breaking. Richard Parry Jones had a lot to do with this era of Ford. From these comments you can see they were a good workhorse to many motorists.
Fantastic video - guess what I have on my drive at this very moment? A 55 plate Mk3 Mondeo 1.8 Zetec and a Berlingo Multispace. Two workhorses that go on and on through MoTs with no advisories! 😃👍
82K on the clock is nothing for such. Acar and it's been proved again, it's not age that kills a car, it's lack of maintenance. The Duratech engine is a Mazda/ Ford thing and those 1.8 and 2 liter engines were also used by Volvo and are chain driven so no belt to replace. This particular Mondeo is just like new and the price is spot on too. Thank you for the upload.
I had a 2006 2.0 auto Ghia x saloon when I was 18, great car and cheap on insurance in the UK (no it wasn't a family hand-me-down!). Had that for 2 years, great car. Then got a 2010-Titanium X Sport 2.0 Ecoboost with 200bhp, remapped to 250, that was great fun and surprised a lot of people! Great video, glad this one was saved.
@@fasthracing yes you'll have had the facelift. Impulse buy that second mondeo, didn't quite realise what engine it was until I put my foot down on the test drive. @@christiansears9335 Ours was an 2011 plate. 6 -speed auto (power shift) Didn't have radar cruise but had heated and cooled seats. Also had 19" wheels and twin exhausts out of the back. At 95,000 miles it started to carbon up so got rid of it.
I ran a 56 Reg 130 TDCi estate (in 2012) for seven years. Pound for pound the best car I ever had . I modified mine by deleting the EGR valve , fitting a KN air filter and putting a Drake Box 2 on the fuel rail . Also fitted a Discovery intercooler . This turned it into a rampaging beast . However it also returned 55mpg!
Matt , you were born to present these videos. You got my attention from how sincere and passionate you are about advising on cars. I travelled from Bedfordshire recently and bought that Audi A8 from your garage. Always a good watch, your posts. Best wishes to you and family - George

Very good cars! Mine is a 2003 mk3 Duratect & It’s done 320 km & still going strong! Have replaced the coil pack done regularly oil & filter changes.Replaced the water pump & thermostat & fitted a new fan belt! This model has a timing chain ! Fitted new rear shock absorbers, removed the catalyst from the exhaust pipe. But next to remove is the intake swirl flaps as they are rattling! Originally thought it was the rockers, but it’s the swirl flaps as the bushes wear out! The engine will still operate without them so I’m told! £300 sounds about right for that car & you can’t go wrong & should be able to make a few extra quid on the resale. Cheers!
Great cars, but just goes to show the issue with the used car market at the moment. This should be circa £750-£1000. Not your fault as you're just selling the car at the current rate but a 19 year old car should be basically scrap value at this point unless it's something special; but because of current inflation they're just not.
Hi there I'm an avid watcher of your videos and I gotta say I really love how you drop idioms and expressions every now and then. "gotta make hay while the sun shines". As English is not my 1st language, I found those really amusing.
What do you have against taking shoes off indoors Matt? 😂 I married a Japanese lady who hammered the rule into me and it’s much nicer to keep the inside of the home nice and clean. Why do you want to bring all the crap from your shoe into your home? I’m with you on sofa protective covers being silly tho. Why buy a nice comfy sofa then put that on because you’re worried about damaging it? Makes no sense to me.
I did think at the start of the video, that this Mondeo would be destined for the scrapyard, I don’t like to see any car scrapped, so I’m glad it’s going to a new home. Great video, as always Matt❤.
Now they are number one in the US for recalls 3 years running. Everyone I know who has had recent Ford have issues. Fiesta, Mustang, Escape, F-150 all had issues. Some major some minor. You don't buy a Ford for quality or reliability. Frankly I don't get how they are still in business with how many markets and segments they left
I had to stop the video and comment. I 100% agree with your sunglasses comment! I find it so incredibly rude, disrespectful and discourteous when people don’t remove their sunglasses when greeting other people. Eye contact is very important as a mark of respect to the person you are communicating with. I thought I was the only one that felt this way! Love your videos by the way, great content and always entertaining Ok back to video.
Great to watch a down to earth video about a down to earth bargain car in great condition for its age. I buy cars of this ilk but usually have to spend a fair wedge on them. Just picking up a comment you made about Chinese tyres. I used to be the same, but for the last 10 years at least I've run my cars on them and they are reasonably priced, handle well, are comfortable, give good mileage. Which I didn't find with some well known European brands.
Famous for electric faults, and traction control issues. Plus you have to take half the front off to change a headlight bulb. Good heaters and reliable though.
Excellent no-nonsense vid. This is what TH-cam was invented for. He takes the risk of buying unseen, does the necessary and deserves the profit. No doubt gives some sort of limited warranty too. He risks giving second-hand car dealers a good name!
I had an 05 2.0 diesel Gaia (black!!!) and it was a great motor. I’m a musician and it got me and LOADS of gear to hundreds of gigs all over the UK between 2011 and 2016. The guy l sold it to is still driving it!
I drove 3 Mondeos between 2001 and 2009 (2 the shape of Goldie in your video) and covered 360,000 miles and the only mechanical issue I had was one seized rear brake caliper when i was heading to France for my hols. I recently bought another Mondeo on a 15 plate as they eat up the motorway miles effortlessly at low cost. Brilliant workhouse cars that people look down their noses at but are great to drive, economical and cheap to run. Looking forward to seeing your favourite countryside litter bin again soon....sorry i meant to say affordable older car. Great video Matt - keep up the good work.
'It's a bit crass isn't it?' You are not wrong. Personally I loved both Mondeos I had: reliable, cheap to run and service, got me to work and back, up and down the motorways in Summer and snow. Also loved the heated windscreen in Winter. Good cars.

Fab review of a hugely underrated car. I'd love one especially with a heated front screen. My daughters boyfriend bought a 2014 Mondeo Hatch recently for £800 and its awesome. Make no mistake these are very good cars.
In January, I bought a mondeo for 230 quid, drove it to LAMMA, Harper Adam’s uni and through central london for a week. I sold it for 600 quid to a mate almost instantly, and it paid for all of it, including diesel and insurance. Love a mondeo
I’ve got a 2009 Mondeo 2l diesel. It never lets me down and still drives so smooth. It’s serviced every year. It’s done 113k now and will likely need a new clutch in the next couple of years. Planning on getting it done early next year and to keep running it until it dies.
Ah that brings back sweet memories. Owned two Mondoes, one silver and the last was black. Very nice family cars, great to drive reliable and an extremely practical runner.
In the late 70’s, early 80’s Fiesta, Capri, Granada Ghia’s, the launch colour was always gold.
just a shame ford just sucks ive owned 3 fords of which 1 brand new from the lot with only 21km on the dash
and it was trash it was a 2022 focus and i hated it it drove boring wasnt comfy
and the other fords were at the garage almost monthly
so i went back to VW group and i have no issues
i bought a 2020 vw troc 2.0 tsi with dsg and its awesome its got 240hp (it has a stage one) and its comfy looks good seats are comfy and its just way better
id drive ford if they were good and reliable
My dad still drive one of these.
Mondeo 2.0 Ltr with manual transmission.
Back then he bought it brand new.

Agree with you they cane us on the tax ,alas is still cheaper than buying another car to me, so I shall keep it for now. 👍

@@markburton8303 Quite. There is actually very little to go wrong on an EV - it is just the battery thst ages.

Surely you mean how clean the person who he bought it off was?
I got some of those as rental cars back in the day - liked them for driving well, being frugal but spacious and, well, cars you could park almost anywhere without fearing for them.
I saw a gold 2005 Astra Estate this morning and thought exactly the same thing, “Who buys a gold car?”, my answer was it was probably the fashion, like buying a rose gold phone a few years ago.
I find it's usually your Uncle who likes fishing and irish music speaking from experience because he had one.
does silver really look any better though?
I've worked in the motor industry many years. Shades of gold have always been a popular colour on executive models, going right back to the earliest metallic paints.
What's wrong with a rose gold phone? - I have one and I love it!
@@davidperry3531like this Mondeo there is nothing wrong with the colour just fashion changes, new phones seem to be come in pastel shades and in a year or two they’ll be pushing something else.

@@volt8684 Yes all the Fords had good gearboxes, even back to the Anglia days.
The econazis are killing the car industry 😥
The fact it had no corrosion is it's main selling point. Rot and the flashing glow plug light usually mean the end for these.
It's a petrol
Loved my mondeo’s especially that particular version.
I've had 4 Mondeo's. Brilliant workhorses. Currently driving a Fiesta. 20 yrs old and 70,000 mls. Can't beat the blue oval.
I guess you don't drive in the winter These things rot for fun
That's a nice car for the money. People make fun of Fords but clearly they're well built.
People who make fun of Fords never drived a Ford, or even a car. Fords were very good cars.

I know many people turn their noses up at the Mondeo but after fifty years of driving various cars I can honestly say that my Mondeo has been the most reliable I've had. Straight through the MOT for the last 8 years with only the odd tyre required.
Mondeo was 'Car of the Year' winner for most years. Great cars.
That’s for your life story - looking forward to volume 2 .

The PT Cruiser revelation and the Papyrus paint colour comment were both brilliant😂
The bonnet latch on my MK2 Focus is the bain of my existence... The design of the latch feels so cheap and flimsy...

Great cars, but just goes to show the issue with the used car market at the moment. This should be circa £750-£1000. Not your fault as you're just selling the car at the current rate but a 19 year old car should be basically scrap value at this point unless it's something special; but because of current inflation they're just not.
