  • ROAD TRIP! We're off to Shepton Mallet to buy some Volvo 850 alloy wheels, so why not use this opportunity to see just how much MPG can be squeezed out of an almost-twenty-year-old oil burning Ford Mondeo TDCi ST?
Have a guess what you think it'll achieve over 180 miles.

I used to own a 2005 2.2 tdci mondeo titanium x ,it was the 155 bhp same as in your ST .I would religiously achieve 67 mpg from my mondeo on a decent run . I later changed my car and purchased a 2009 mondeo titanium x sport estate. It was the 175 bhp 2.2 6 speed manual. This car must have been a tad heavier as 48 mpg was the best I ever did see from that car . But my later purchase was a 2018 skoda superb 2.0 190 tdi dsg sel executive estate. That car was fantastic on fuel and would constantly return 68 mpg on a long motorway journey. All hail the diesel ⛽️ 🙌

On modern cars the gap between diesel fuel economy and petrol has narrowed significantly and given that diesel is over 20p more expensive unless you run 90% or more on motorways the modern petrol is better option than modern diesel.

I was lucky enough to buy a 6 month only 05 plate mondeo TDCI 130. It had a shade over 6k miles on it when I bought it. I owned it 6 years and PX-ed it at 185k. In that time it had a cluch and flywheel and a handbrake cable. Apart from service items like brakes and discs, oil and filter etc that's all it had. Mid 50's was an average run for the car but 62 was achievable in favorable traffic.
I still say that was quite possibly the best car I've owned to date. It towed our trailed and caravan around the country. It was a well maintained work partner that I was sad to see go. When I got the new car I wished I hadn't let it go.

    Hi Geoff,
I'm a fairly recent subscriber to your channel and have watched your back catalogue. Great work.
I run a 2016 Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDI Scout which I have owned from new. I once managed 64.4 mpg according to its trip computer and mid to high 50's is a regular occurrence. On that , how accurate are the on board computers, do they measure how much fuel goes through the injectors ?.
Regarding the rubbish, it's the same everywhere you go, it's disgraceful, just what do we get for all the various taxes we pay out. It just seems we are constantly being muggedby the authorities and getting less and less for it.
They should get prisoners out clearing rubbish from the road side or use able bodied benefit recipients.
The clean air zones forcing people to seek alternative routes was always going to happen, absolute lunacy.
    Keep up the good work.

One of the things I've noticed on motorway journeys, EV's will blast past you on the outside lane, few miles later you will pass them while still travelling at the same speed, I think it's when they realize how far away they are from a charger.

Hate to potentially burst your bubble, but the MK3 Diesel Mondeo was always optimistic when it came to its trip computer MPG by about 10% in my experience. Had one many years ago and used to measure the actual MPG by filling at the same pump, letting it click just once and doing the calculations. If over the course of a tank it was saying 50 on the computer, the real figure was about 5mpg less. Wasn’t an anomaly with mine either as was on a large Mondeo forum and this was the general experience of all the MK3’s no matter what the engine. Similar story when I changed to a X-Type Estate - optimistic but closer to reality. Trip Computer MPG seem to be more accurate on newer cars I find - the missus Fiat 500 is spot on.

Hi Geoff, I drive a Peugeot 407, 2 litre turbo diesel and most years I take a week long holiday on the Isle of Skye from home near Chester.
The total distance to the Skye bridge is 420.4 miles via M53, 56, M6 and M 74 through Glasgow past Loch Lomond, Fort William and Kyle of Lochalsh. Over the whole week total mileage door to door is around 1365 miles.
I check fuel consumption in 2 ways:-
    - on board consumption meter
    - total fuel put in plus top up to full again on return home (always start with a full tank).
At a steady 70 mph on motorways meter shows 68 mpg this seems optimistic but without a separate snap tank I can’t prove it.
From the onboard meter the average for the whole week shows 53.2 mpg.
Using total fuel figures back home gives an impressive 55.39mpg. Neither is accurate but it gives a good indicator . Average speeds are as follows:-
    Outbound 53 mph
    Return 48mph
The only factor to consider is that from Glasgow going north traffic is very scarce and an economical cruise is straight forward as Saturday evenings are quiet. Return is similar with night traffic on the M74/M6 being the only constraint due to HGV activity.
For info car is 18 yrs old (reg Jan 2005) with 83k miles and lacks cruise control!
    Date of journey October 2021.
PS I also have figures for a 1.8 petrol mondeo mark 1 over the same journey I have not included these as they are embarrassingly low!
