  • Come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop as he has a look at this 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan that has a complaint of a clicking noise coming from the rear heater and a customer complaint of the front passenger side temperature control is always stuck on hot! In this video I show you how to replace the front and rear temperature actuators. If you preform this fix be aware that there is also a programming update that should be done to prevent this from happening in the future. Check to see if your vehicle falls under the TSB update from Chrysler. PLUS BONUS FOOTAGE: Mrs.O makes cabbage fried in BACON Grease!!

I love this channel because of Eric O.'s commitment to doing quality work and the super detailed diagnosis he does BEFORE he starts replacing parts. Watch this video again, see how Eric O. confirms the problem first, then shows you how to fix it in a step by step manner, the reconfirms that the replacement part is working properly. You show me another TH-cam channel that has these level of professionalism and talent. Great job Eric O.

I love my 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan. Utilitarian vehicle. As long as there are men like you that have the interest to create repair content and aftermarket parts suppliers to supply inexpensive parts, I will keep it on the road. My 2000 Grand Caravan Sport achieved 343,000 km before I had to put it out to pasture. I thought that was ok.

It's a shame that factory original and or aftermarket parts are such poor quality. It's all about the dollar and cents anymore and how much profit is made. Quality only comes 2nd to profit. Enjoy your videos very much, keep up the great work.

I first thought it was the lower (temp), but after switching that one out and testing, the clicking was still there so I switched out the top one (airflow) and all is working great now. Thanks a ton for sharing your knowledge and I appreciate your wit and humor too. How do I send you a coffee?

Thanks Eric! I have a 2008, so your Mopar minivan repair videos are really useful for me.
It looks like the A/C lines enter the evaporator from inside the vehicle on these newer versions, instead of from underneath. That should help with the corrosion issues.
It's okay. I am not a cabbage fan either, unless it is in coleslaw.

I had this same problem with my 2013 Grand Caravan. I tried synching the knobs - didn't work. After watching the first few minutes of the SMAR vid, I opened the glove box to reveal the right side Blend Door Activator, started the car and AC on high, then tapped on the Activator a few times with the butt end of a screwdriver while dialing the passenger side control from cold to hot. Magically it started working again. I'll replace it later, but it works for now. Thanks for the tip.

Sure would of been nice if they designed the front actuator so you can access the actuator by removing the glovebox. Chrysler / Dodge service center ensures job security. Can't even guess how to make the rear actuators easier. Perhaps making them out of quality materials might.

My brother bought the 2012 VW flavor of the Grand Caravan, the Routan. Within 4 years of ownership the transmission shat the bed. The dealer wouldn't replace it - they "rebuilt" it (he bought the extended warranty). Within 10 minutes of driving it, the transmission sounded like the Jetson's car, this crazy whirring sound. He brought it immediately back. The dealership informed him that the sound "was within acceptable limits". Fortunately he didn't have to wait more than another month before it died yet again. Drove it home on the highway at 35 mph and 5500 RPM since it wouldn't shift out of 1st. This time they actually did replace the transmission (supposedly).
Other crazy things of the many that have broke on this car include the driver's seat essentially wearing out and cracking. Brought to the dealer, with a refusal to fix/replace it, stating that "the seat has an acceptable amount of wear".
When the power seat stopped working it took 2 months to get the part in that they needed to fix it. So my brother couldn't drive it during that whole time since the seat was locked at the position of his wife's seating position.
Just amazing what a POS this company manufactures. When you ride in it, the thing literally sounds like it's shaking apart with all the rattles and squeaks and bangs. And the best part is, my brother is going to buy ANOTHER Grand Caravan.
I'll take my '05 Subaru all day long. Twelve years old and my brother always remarks about how quiet it is, hardly any squeaks or rattles. The seats have virtually no wear to them. Never had a major issue with this car (knock on wood).

To make your Dorman comments better, when I replaced the rear evaporator on my 2008 Caravan in 2017, I replaced the blend door actuators because they were worn. That tells me the stock actuators lasted about 9 years. These were replaced with the Dorman ones. Well, I just replaced the Dorman temp actuator after only ALMOST 2 years because it was clicking like in this video. Dorman is CRAP!

You seem to know your way around D/C/P minivans pretty well & seem to be a Glutton for Punishment with them LIKE ME, so thought I'd take a chance on a message to you about my A/C Problem. The first part is from other posters on a Dodge Forum I belong to.
"Originally Posted by Lion Heart View Post"
Hey guys! I have a 2013 Grand Caravan.
The front blower has stopped working, rear is 100% a-ok.
I checked all the fuses in the board, all good. Tested the relay by swapping the front and rear relays (the number on top is the same) and relay seems to be working fine.
There is no 12v signal being sent to the blower resistor (and so of course no 12v going to the blower fan either). I tested the blower fan, and that is 100% working fine when you manually apply 12v. But there is no 12v being sent to the resistor or blower.
Tried a replacement used panel in the dash board (i.e. the heater control panel) and the problem remained and was identical.
Before the fan stopped working I noted it was intermittent, and also the relay would click on and off continuously (like a bad connection). But now it does not click at all when the ignotion is swicthed on, and the relay is itself is fine (I have swapped the front and rear relays around and both are fine and activate the rear blower no problem.
No idea why, or what to try next???
My car does have two codes that have been on there a while P0455 EVAP Emission Control System Leak (Large) and P0430 Catalytic Efficiency Below Theshold Bank 2. The P0455 was previously a (small) leak but now changed to (large). The small leak and other code has been there for months (engine light on, reduced power on accelleration, I'm getting around to sorting it but keep getting other issues, like this one!!!). BUT, back to the point, I don't think those codes would switch off the front blower whilst allowing the rear blower to still work??? So I think that is completely unrelated?
So, apart from that I have no clue and any recommendations on what to test next much appreciated!!!
    My Post:
I am having the same problem now with my 2013 SXT. All of a sudden, with no type of problems or noises or strange behavior, my Front Blower would not run.
The fan works great at top speed when separated from the system harness, and no voltage reading at the connector.
Swapped the Blower Power Control Module with a know good working one, and still no power to blower connector.
Ran a scanner test & all actuators working all the buttons on both side work as intended (rear Def, front Def, etc. all level change as intended so doors & everything else working ok & no Trouble codes come up on scanner.
I am now gearing up to start tracing out all the wires between the blower connector & the source, which is a job no one wants to do if it can be avoided! It is hard enough trying to get hands & fingers up into the tight spots to disconnect or back probe the connectors to test for voltage!
There MUST be some type of TECH out here that has some hints or clues as to the source of the trouble.
I am hoping to find out or eliminate the Controller Head Switches mounted in the dash stack before tracing any individual lines for problems, but not exactly sure how to do that since I cannot seem to find any specs on what voltage on which connectors anywhere along the connectors, & I am having trouble understanding the wiring diagrams I found on all data since they don't provide a diagram key showing what are switches & connectors, plus the diagrams are split over multiple pages & the wires change colors in areas added to the fact that I can't seem to read small print anymore even with a pair of cheaters on.
ANY advice, hints or help of any type would be greatly appreciated, especially after reading about all the horror stories out here about being rack over the coals by so many "Dealers" who mainly seem to be just throwing parts at the problems until they finally find one that fixes it!
I have never looked for or expected Anything for Nothing & I don't mind paying people for doing a job for me, but I absolutely HATE being ripped off !

Not so much burned out, but inserted into the keyways and twisted to align the screw holes and broke the gears clean off.

I replaced the blend doors in my 2011 Caravan. I used Dorman. Yeah you guessed it. Soon after the clicking was back. The dorman unit was junk. I ordered Chrysler product. No more issues.

Lol I've had really good luck with caravans. The only problem I have with the current one I own has the elusive intermittent cylinder 4 misfire and I just purchased a 14 SXT today from the insurance auction and the only thing wrong with it is the blower in the rear HVAC unit is making noise and the passenger side sliding door won't close with the button but we all know that's just a broken wire in the track.

  • @x21gokartracing
    @x21gokartracing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I replaced the driver side front actuator, Since the gear is missing a tooth I don't if the actuator is turning the door to the coldest setting. Before installing the new actuator I took the "key weigh" out of the old actuator and put it in to control the temperature door, hand turning the key weigh towards the front seats will release cold air the opposite direction is hot air. Left it in the cold position, Connected the wire harness to the new actuator turned the temp knob to cold, looking at the key weigh it will turn counter clock wise to cold. facing away from you it will turn clock wise when installed

I totally agree best dyi channel on you tube, plus Eric has a great sense of humor, Last good Chrysler I had was a 1960 Dodge. Kept saying they have to get better by now but 4 Chrysler products later still Junk. Honda and Toyota guy now, and anyone who will listen to me gets that advice!

  • @leebarnes655
    @leebarnes655 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Don't know about chrysler actuators but the chevy ones do that popping sound because the plastic bull gear has a crack from the pot metal hub to the outside gear teeth which allows it to then open up and bump around on the pot metal hub splines. If you really need to, you can JB weld it back together, and there is a dude on eBay that sells $20 replacements he makes himself. It hammers onto your old hub if you are tired of OEM bad design or high price of dorman complete units. Not very practical for SMA as labor isn't free but for the DIY that has more time than money it's a nice option to have. Quality looks very bad from his milling machine but they sure work better than OEM so far.

My parents 2009 Town & Country had one of the automatic doors not open or close. Turned out to be a broken wire in the wiring harness after 4-5 years. Thank god the 2009 model year came with "Lifetime" Warranty. lol.

Man I just did this job today and the front is still blowing hot. I guess I didn’t put it in right. I heard you say something about twisting it to fit, but it fit, oh well. But you got in and out pretty quick, it took me an hr alone on the bottom screw and I had to cut some plastic away.

Hi Eric, I have a 2012 Dodge Caravan first thing . It's winter here in michigan now and we had the air-condition compressor removed and installed a delete bearing. What do we need todo to get better heat now in our van . Yes I removed the pully and installed new bearing as the compressor is frozen up. Any help would be great . Keep the videos rolling.
