If its lighting up showing it's charging but it's not actually holding a charge that would be a fault with the battery and if replaced should fix the issue, same thing happens with car batteries
My friend has a charging docking station, borrowed his and it's charging. Usb port for each of my 2 controllers has always been a pain in the *** since day one, now they just don't work at all. Keep it up Sony, great quality !

Another thing to add!! If you've self modded your controller, there's a chance that a cable has been left loose, or a Ruben cable has become damaged. Please be careful when opening your controller, the ribbon cables especialy are very delicate

Yo I found out if you guys are having problems with your controller cherges but not connecting to the ps4 I don't like to take much risks but there should be a black cord behind your ps4 just unplug that kne for 2 to 3 minutes then plug it back in then connect a charger to that controller and it should work but before you try it dust the sides to the console just in case. You guys can try it if you want Don't be scared and just trust like or comment this comment if this works for you. Tell me if it works also Don't put your ps4 into rest mode all the time I learned it the hard way.

Either dead battery or a chips has gone bad I have a controller that only works plugged in because a chip is shorted and its getting hot

In my case it seems the controllers drive back the current so when I plug in to the TV usb output the TV turns off and the same for chargers
