PS4 Controller NOT Charging? | How to make a custom EXT port charging cable for the DS4

- Some of you know and some of you don't know this but if you have a controller with a broken charging port you can still charge it using the EXT port in the front.
The easiest method to do this is to buy a charging station and your problems are solved. But what if you discover this in the middle of the night and you are so close to beating the game. What then?
I am going to show you how to make your own EXT PORT charging cable from two regular USB cables. Simple and easy.
Before we start I want to give you a little tip that will help you protect the charging port on the back of your controller. The most common reason that the charging port gets broken is the poorly designed placement of the port that puts pressure on the cable when connected. So instead of placing my controller upright when I am charging it I place the controller upside down. You're welcome!
But since you're watching this video, I'm guessing this tip can't help you now right?
So let's get crafty and start building a cable.

1. I managed to plug in the controller the wrong way for a few minutes. The controller got a little hot but it seems to be working fine. I hope I won’t be making the same mistake again in the future 🤭. Anyway, though you might want to know.

Amazing video. My controller has a problem where it won't accept power through USB port although If battery charged, it works flawlessly and even connects to my pc via USB. It only doesn't charge it. Did this method and now my controller is working while plugged in BUT, when connected to the modded charger and connected to Bluetooth, if I disconnect the modded charger the controller seems to work just fine on battery and doesn't shut down but also it doesn't light up the light bar. A very strange problem is happening to my controller but no matter, this method gave it a life and I'm glad I found it❤.
Thank you! I am glad it helped! The LED that lights up inside the controller it is mounted on the USB module and connects to the controller via a ribbon cable. If the ribbon or the usb module is are damaged, there is a big chance that your LED won’t work or won’t work with all colors (RGB). It might light up Blue (player) but Yellow (charging).

Update. Unfortunately it didnt actually work. Said it was charging but didnt take any charge. Might gave been my wiring. Time for a new controller.
@@tokyo8236 if the light comes up as if it is charging but the controller turns off when you pull the cable out, it means that you have a faulty battery. In this case you could change the battery or play with the cable connected. Or, like you said…. New Controller 😁. Cheers.

Thanks Barney! There was a pcb made. You can find a link in the description. That is where I found the pinout for the port. I never made a pcb before so I had to figure out another way. Happy coincidence that the pins from the usb are positioned at the right distance to connect with the pins from the ext port 😜.

My usb cable is missing the black wire but there’s a solid strip of neatly packed shiny silver wire with no color surrounding it, is that supposed to be the black wire?
That should be the black wire (the ground) but If you are not sure maybe you can find a way to test the wires somehow. A multimeter would be great or some 5v electronic that you don’t mind if you break (a small fan or motor, some lights).
If I grabbed a usb to usb would I just have to modify one end? Or do I have to do the whole wire splicing in order for it to work?
I don’t think it will work. You will still have to cut and recognize the wiring.
It will not work because you are using pin 1 & 4 from the USB and 1 & 3 from the USB MOD. And you even have to cross them: black to red (-5v from USB to +5v pin on USB MOD) and red to green (+5v pin from USB to data pin on USB mod) if I remember correctly.
Love this video and does the ext cable have to be from a keyboard? Or does any old usb cable do the trick? If it doesn't. Can a usb cable from a mouse work?
Any usb cable should be fine. Some charging cables might not have all 4 wires inside. But if it has 4 wires core there should be problem. I actually didn’t use the keyboard cable because the wires had different colors so it was not a good example for the tutorial.

I have a question about wire codecs I have a ps4 cable and a cable of my broken keyboard the colours are the same but the ps4 cable wire colour is way lighter colours and the white wire on the cable off the keyboard looks like human skin colour should I be good to go cause they look the same

You can pause the video and see the drawing. If I recall the bottom pins extremities. I think there is also a link in the description of the site from where I found the pinout. Maybe you can take a look there and understand everything better. I explained as best as I could in the video. I don’t think I could do it better. I hope you will figure it out eventually. No. This is only for charging purposes. It will not connect with your console. You can connect it from the pairing menu and by pushing the share and ps buttons at the same time.

Hey hi my ps4 controller battery is fine when i turn it on it wont but when I connect directly it power on, but when I disconnect from power it disconnect and power of what might be the problem
Hey Karim! Sounds like you do have a battery issue. Have you opened up your controller? If you did, you might have missed to put the battery socket back in. If not, your battery might be depleted and unable to hold the change. Usually that would be what I would check first. I hope this helps!
Hey. This video got me excited...I am looking at connecting PS4 back buttons via a long cable to the EXT port instead of directly in to the port. What cables would I need to do this? I am converting the back buttons to a jump pedal
It might be a bit more complicated. In order to access the back buttons via ext port you might need some electronics and a firmware.

The short answer is no. Pin 1 and 4 is for voltage and pins 2 and 3 for data. So you would get one voltage pin and one data pin on the controllers end. You still have to cut the cable and cross connect the wires to get voltage on pins one and three.
I dont exactly understand. Why did you cut that end outta the other cable? You already had a 5v+ and - connection in one cable, could you not have just modified the one cable?
I used 2 of the same plugs at both ends (male USB-A) so I had to cut those from 2 different cables as a cable with 2 USB-A male plugs is unusual to be found laying around the house. And even with a special cable like that you can see that the wire colors don’t match (the 5v from the Charger) goes to the black one from the custom plug (from what I remember). I hope this answers your question.
Do both cables have to be micro usb?
Not necessarily. They have to have 4 wires inside with the same colors as in my video. The other side can be mini USB, USB B, micro USB, and so on.

Good question. I haven’t tried it but I suppose that if you can find the + and - 5V wires on the USB C you could hook them up to the second cable.

Thank you! If you make the connection without soldering it will still work but it is not as secure (it might get disconnected in time depending on how you handle the cable). As long as the wires don’t touch each other you can use almost anything as insulation. In my experience the electrical tape is a bit hard to work with and makes the insulated area a bit bulky and less flexible. Also poor quality tapes tend to unwrap in time. That is why I prefer using thermal tubes (you should easily find some at electronics stores or bricolage stores). Nonetheless you should be good without soldering or thermal tubing specially if it’s for an emergency situation. 👍🏼 Good luck!

Hey there! You might have a cooling problem on your console: cleaning and charging the thermal paste might help. If not, probably best to get it to a specialist (because of overheating some pins on the main board get unsoldered and need special care and special tools).
Now what would happen if you charged both at the same time?
Great question! I haven’t tried but i think either the front and back charging pins are interconnected or there is a safety measure inside the electronics. I don’t exactly know as I am not a specialist. My bet would be that nothing would happen either that the controller will charge.

How did you remove the 3rd pin I am trying but I cant
I used something sharp (swis knife) to bend the pin out a little (in middle of the pin’s length), than pliers to pull it out.
Bro holy shit thank you so much! My micro usb port is broken so i was planning to just swap out batteries from an old controller that also has a broken micro usb, but i would charge them with a broke controller from nanco which is usb c, point is you're a life saver !

EDIT2: Where should I put this cable on?, I was thinking that it should be okay to charge it with the PC as it is kinda low voltaje and it shouldn't fry the gamepad, but I'm very scared of fucking up the USB ports due to how hot it gets, literally, I burnt myself with it, and I can feel the heat through the cable. BTW I put it in a USB3.0 port.
EDIT: it does heat a lot ._. I burnt myself with it, be careful with that.
Also, be sure to file the tip pretty well, if not it will not charge. I thought that I failed with it until I got more material out of the tip.
If you use an old mouse or cable (instead of usb cable) you will fight with the metal part. It goes pretty far behind the cable and is not as cheap as what you see in the video.
ORIGINAL: If the USB cable starts to heat on the union... is it a bad signal?
There seems to be something wrong with your cable. It should not get hot at all. You should be careful as it might be a fire hazard and if not you could damage your controller or charger. I would advise you to stop using it, recheck your work, maybe use other cables. There might be a short somewhere. Please be careful as it can be dangerous.

I created this mod exactly as you did and controller turns on but the blue light starts flickering, the speaker is clicking and the L2 and R2 buttons are being pressed, anyone experiences the same?
Maybe there is some sort of short somewhere. For me everything works fine. I am using my cable to charge my controller since I made it and I can play games while charging it. Something seems to be wrong on your cable. I would advise you to stop using it or you might burn out your controller or your charger.

How do I connect my controller to my ps4 if the charging hole is broken at top and I charge it from the bottom
You can connect it in PlayStation settings. You still need a second controller to initiate the system. I haven’t tried a mouse or a keyboard so I don’t know if that can work.

If done right it should work from the PS4 but only for charging.

Not at all. It can be any USB cable. I just had a broken keyboard at home.

This is awesome! Can I splice micro usb cords as long as they have a USB-A male end, or do they have to be solid USB-A cords? My kids jam the chargers in their ports like prison shanks🤣. Any help would be appreciated
You only need the USB-A side of the chord. You will cut the other side so it is not important what kind it is. You will need 2 cables and will only use the USB -A side on both cables.
Search for cables with the same color code as mine (those are the standard colors and you can’t fail).
How to stick back on the blue plastic
I used cyanoacrylate (super glue). You can also try a slim double sided tape. It also worked inserting the blue tab after inserting the ribbon without sticking it.

Sir I did manage to plug it wrongly into the port. Now my controller is dead. Do you have any advices how to fix it?
If something got damaged I don’t know what to suggest. You can let it sit for a while and then try recharging again. Usually the components have some protection that will break the circuit and after they cool down everything works as usual. I plugged it in the wrong way once and kept it plugged for a while but nothing happened.

i have just done it but it does not seem to work. Do you know what possible errors i could have made?
First, Ext plug has to fit Face down inside the EXT port. Wire connection (if you have a multimeter to check the voltage on the 2 pins that would be awesome) Red wire from USB (+5V) connects to the Green wire from the EXT plug and Black wire from USB(GND) goes to the Red wire from EXT plug. If you cut the USB like I did, you should have the pins face down and the cut part on the other side of the audio jack on the controller (if you have the pins down and the cut part on the side of the audio jack than the wire connections should be different/ in this case i think you should have white and black instead of green and red) ( you can send me an email with a picture of the custom plug and I can tell you if something seems off). If all is well there could be that the plastic of the plug is not thick enough and it doesn’t make a good connection with the pins on the controller. There could also be something else broken inside the electronics of the controller and whatever you do it will not charge (you could test this by trying to charge a controller that you are sure it works). That is all I can think of. I hope it helps! Good luck! 🍀

@@ljsv it is not aluminum (it is some kind of zinc alloy I think). As long as the solder sticks to each material, you can connect them and they will transfer electricity. They are both conductors.

Thank you ☺️! What size are you referring to? To be honest I haven’t measured the inside of the port. I filed the socket bit by bit until it fitted the hole. The thickness of the plug was a happy accident.

@@Lucky-md4rs I would love to. But if you followed the video correctly it should work. Two things to consider: check that you position the plug in correctly (pins oriented down) and recheck the wire connections are correct (recheck the color combination between wires). Rewatch the video and make sure you did everything correctly.

@@amongus303iq3 the copper wire (the metal part that gets soldered) could be of different color (silver or copper). It is ok if they are different in my opinion. They are both conductive so there should be no problem.
My cables don’t have green only black and red
I believe there are some cables made only for charging that only have 2 wires but you will need data cables that have 4 wires. Also the cable I made is designed only for charging so you won’t be able to connect the controller with it. I hope this answers your questions.
