Thanks for including Starcastle in your list. Their second album, Fountains of Light, is the one that has aged very well over time for me.

That sweet Roy Thomas Baker production!!!!

Starcastle was always a guilty pleasure for me. The criticism from prog purists was that they were a group of Yes wannabes, but as a devoted Yes fan I appreciated the fact that they used Yes as strong influence and skewed just slightly toward the rock side of prog rock. FOL was indeed a classic (so imagine our embarrassment when their record company forced them into an unsuccessful commercial lane with the execrable “Reel to Real,” which killed the band). I particularly loved their rhythm section; the bassist managed to nail the Chris Squire sound and technique (I forget his name - he passed away a few years ago). For an album or two, they were, to me, shining stars in the prog pantheon. I also wish someone had remastered the albums for CD re-release because the CDs were simply vinyl masters transferred to CD, which sound like crapola, RTB production or not!

I think that the artwork by Roger Dean on Greenslade is my favourite of his works. I don't know why but I really like it!

Great show thanks Scott! Heldon's 'Stand By' would be a great fit into this! Combining Fripp-esque guitartronics , ambient yet scary soundscapes, and freeform composition, 'Stand By' is a direct line to wonderful IDM artists like Aphex Twin and Autechre, as well as prog/fusion minded hip hop artists like EL-P and Madlib.

Great list Scot. Alot of listening I have to do with some albums. I am debating of doing a full album reaction to either Olias Of Sunhillow or YesShows.

"Moonmadness" and "Three Friends" I lump together in this category, because I got them at the same time and both were my introductions to their respective bands. Was quite underwhelmed by both initially, but now absolutely love them and cannot figure out why I didn't take to them when I was younger.
I actually just listened to "Fandangos In Space" a couple weeks ago! Posted it on Prog Collectors.
Fully agree on "The Story Of i". I LOVE it, but wasn't quite sure back in those days.
I would add YES "Drama" to this list, because I think it's the YES album that has taken the biggest swing on the Got Better With Age Pendulum. Thought it was ok back in the early 80s, and totally love it now!!

    • @TheProgCorner
      @TheProgCorner  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Drama is the correct Yes album in this category for me too. I liked it. But in 1980 I had already kinda moved on. Tormato broke my heart. Love Beach broke my heart. Ditto And Then There Were Three. But upon further review: Drama is fabulous.

Hey Scot ! I think the album that hasn't aged one bit is the 1st King Crimson album . You would release that album today exactly as is and it would make a huge impact on the world of Prog. It is still the greatest Prog. release ever in my opinion. Thanks for mentioning Happy the Man, they are one of my fav. Prog bands of all time!

I'm a day 1 Rush fan and still remember as a 16 yr old walking out of Records On Wheels in Burlington ON with "Archives" 3 album set (their 1st 3 LPs) under my arm for $5.99. Fountain Of Lamneth still one of my top 5 Rush tracks. The Necromancer a classic too "3 travelers, men of Willowdale" awesome. Cheers!

Really cool video today, great topic and great choices! Most of these I do know quite well and really enjoy, but there are some that I have not heard and need to check out (Gypsy, Area, Greenslade, Carmen), as well as a few that I heard long ago and need to revisit (Patrick Moraz, Rush, Sebastian Hordie, UK). I'm sure there are any others that cold fit this category, but this is a fine list.

To be brutally honest , I've never seen that Moonmadness album sleeve before..and hope I never do again !! 😅 An awesome album though. Danger money UK absolutely love that. That Starcastle LP... it's just WOW !! And the Moraz album Scot is just amazing.. suppose it could be hailed as the best YES solo album of sorts but Olias of Sunhillow must take the prize for me. It's also the one I've probably listened to most of those solo albums. Fantastic selection there Scot ! 😍

With you on tons of these!!
Moonmadness is tied with Mirage as my favourite Camel release.
It took me a little bit to get into Greenslade, the vocals were a bit off at first, but it has such a vibe that is totally unique.
When it comes to UK, I'm more of a Danger Money person - something really special and unique about that one.
Starcastle's s/t really needs to be heard by so many - Sure, it can sound A LOT like Yes, but that isn't a bad thing, and there's also a lot more of a nice OAR influence on it.

I dont know how I missed this video. I enjoy your videos a lot. There are several albums on your list I'll be checking out. I also liked that you included a few that don't get the recognition they deserve. (Danger Money, Islands & Caress of Steel) These are top notch albums that need more attention.
I would add a few underrated albums to my list:
Hergest Ridge by Mike Oldfield-(the original mix) I think this one is right up there with Tubular Bells.
Epsolon in Malasian Pale by Edgar froese- (again the original mix). A great companion piece to Tangerine Dream's Rubicon.
Manfred Mann's Earth Band The Good Earth.- I think this is terribly underrated.

It’s Awesome that you brought up Nektar’s “ A Tab “….. Thanks to Pete Pardo, I discovered that album about 2 years ago. I fell in love with it immediately, especially that incredible title track. It’s an intoxicating long, epic journey that I’ve listened to religiously. And Kudos to both “ Olias “ ( Anderson’s finest solo work, imo ), and “ Danger Money “, which I thinks as good as the UK debut. Now, Gypsy is a band that I’ve been totally interested in, but have found to be rather elusive because of expense or availability. But I’ll give them another shot. I feel the need to have something those guys. Thanks !

Hi Scot. My copy of the Regna album arrived in the post today (ordered on Bandcamp and sent from Spain). Terrific album🥰
I have a content suggestion for you sir. How about a 'what I've been listening to this week' show? You could cover new stuff that you're checking out, plus older stuff, obscure stuff or prog adjacent stuff that prog fans may like. Basically, a rundown of what you've been spinning. The show could last 10 minutes, or if you want to discuss some bands or albums in a little more depth make it 20 or 30 minutes. Anything goes. You make the rules.
    Peace, Love, and Respect sir🤘🏻

    Hey Scot,
Another intriguing list. I had a cassette copy of Olias Of Sunhillow way back when. Don't know what happened to it. As for Happy The Man, I've been meaning to check out some of their discography, but have been distracted by other music. One day, though. Nektar I remember from hearing Remember The Future pretty frequently on FM rock radio in the 70's. King Crimson is probably my favorite British prog band of all time, but I'm not familiar with everything they've done. Maybe I'll check out Islands one day. I could use copies of Starless And Bible Black and Discipline for my collection. And you said you're doing a show on Kansas? I gotta say, Kansas doesn't do anything for me. Maybe Dust In The Wind and its video poisoned me against them. I ended up making fun of that song: "I close my eyes/only for a moment/and I cannot see/Dust in a bin/all we are is dust in a bin..." Anyway, enjoyed watching.

Moraz may just be one of the most talented, but also most unlucky musicians in the World of Prog. Canned by Yes because manager Brian Lane was orchestrating the return of Wakeman behind his back. A falling out with The Moody Blues that lead to his firing and an embarrassing (for both sides) televised court case, plus a solo career that has gotten little to no recognition from the music press. But his talent has always been unquestionable.

    WOW!
I am always a bit surprised when a YT prog channel mentions any Italian prog. For some reason, Italian prog seems to have kind of been forgotten by so many prog fans.
And the truth is, Italy produced ( and still produces) prog that is the equal of their better known Brit counterparts. So, bravo!
I agree with about half of your list overall.
But for me, the stuff that seems to get better and better, are bands in the avant-prog subgenre, like: Univers Zero, Henry Cow, Samla Mammas Manna, Art Zoyd, etc.
And also, bands in the Zeuhl subgenre: Magma, Eskaton, Zao, Shub-Niggurath, Potempkine, Ruins, Honeyelk, etc.

Interesting list Scot.I always felt the 2nd UK album tends to get overlooked by fans and critics possibly because Bruford and Holdsworth left the band before it was recorded. The debut was superb but so is Danger Money especially the epic Carrying No Cross. It showcases Jobson's keyboard skills even more than the debut.

Danger Money is the go to UK album for me. AOR / radio friendly / prog whatever you call it at its absolute best. Monstrous album without a bad song on it that heralds the way that Wetton's search for a hit single would go, and what Asia would become. I remember being blown away by Jobson on first listen too. What a talent that man is.
Great choice of Pat Moraz at #1. The sort of album you find a detail you missed before every time you listen to it. My copy was signed by the man himself before a Moodies gig in Manchester in the 80s where we had a chance to talk with him for ages. What a lovely guy. We later ran into the guys when their tour bus pulled up at a fish and chip shop we'd stopped at - what a laugh!

Just listened to Ellesmere's Wyrd (you said you liked) and Stranger Skies for the second time. Didn't get Wyrd... vocal 'light' so no story, and though I love harmonious discord, I only got discord! Stranger Skies though has gone from 'like it' to GREAT! I mentioned the spectacular video seemingly suggesting it was about the seeding of life... I thought Panspermia would have been a fabulous album title but Mr Google tells me it's been done. Very disappointed at you not playing the music we love on your great channel!

    Just a few comments:
Sebastian Hardie is great. I think Mario Millo is awesome - Windchase, his solo album Epic lll! (Title track is my favorite piece of Aussie prog).
    Olias - 1st new age album! 😄
Area - some people have a very narrow view of what prog is!
Danger Money - great album! UK broke up because Eddie wanted longer songs, John wanted shorter songs.
Starcastle - 1st band I ever saw live, they opened for Gentle Giant in Seattle in 77. Awesome show! They're obviously influenced by Yes, but still great with their own style.
Smallcreep's Day - great album. When it came out, Steve Hackett called up Mike to congratulate him, but was surprised when Mike said he doesn't really like the album. That's always puzzled me.
Islands - I've always loved this, didn't know why it doesn't get the love it deserves.

I loved that StarCastle album. It was like a new YES record at the time. But in retrospect, I feel it doesn't hold up. It's like the band listened to certain sections of 'Relayer" and wrote an entire album based on that. Islands? I'll have to listen to that again. I haven't since 1976.

Honestly I personally rate it higher than 2112, I know that's a hot take but it's my take so there. Just a great album front to back. And I also agree that Grace Under Pressure is really underappreciated, but honestly I don't think there's a single album from them that's less than good. I love Smallcreep's Day as well, but I never thought the "suite" worked as one. A genuine suite needs to have more than just a bunch of songs, the songs should also segue into each other and be incomplete outside the context of the work. All the songs from the SD suite seem like separate songs, they don't fit together into a whole the same way, say, Supper's Ready does.
