What One Piece taught us: Dr. Hiluluk: " When do you think a person dies? When a bullet from a pistol pierces his heart? No.. When he's attacked by an incurable disease? No.. When he eats a deadly poisonous mushroom soup? No! A man dies when people forget him.." Dalton: "Even if medical care progresses... even if the research on medicine continues, there's no medicine that can cure fools!"
You have to realize I've watched Doctor Hiluluk's death and Chopper begging to be a doctor many times, and I never - ever- managed not to cry. I can't, it's too much, it's so beautiful for the meaning, the music, Chopper's character. He's such a good boy and Hiluluk was truly a good man, as well as Dalton. This episode has so much to teach.
if you noticed every straw hat crew has a traumatizing childhood, chopper's arc is one of my fav people forget that chopper is just an innocent kid, the only person in the world who accept him died because of him, that traumatized him to the core worst thats the only 'family' hes got or known since birth
43:34 Once again in tears over here... Dr Hiruluk's speech is one thing and it gets me every time but Dalton's speech after... I mean wow. He definitely inherited Hiruluk's will.
Chopper's backstory is one of my top 5 favorite parts of the series, especially the scene with Ave Maria. Btw Chopper's birthday is Christmas Eve, the 24th 😊 and Oda's birthday is today!
every SHC backstories always got the highest views . especially chopper , sanji and robin . never say underrated to One Piece backstories , that's not wise .
“When does a man die? When he is hit by a bullet? No! When he suffers a disease? No! When he ate a soup made out of a poisonous mushroom? No! A man dies when he is forgotten!”
The doctor was dying from a disease which has no known cure. It was mentioned he only has a few days left. He drank the mushroom “medicine”from Chopper out of the kindness that Chopper shows. Drinking the poison mushroom wouldn’t do much to his life at that point.
This backstory 😭😭poor Chopper. Loved your reaction!! One thing is that the reason the Doctor ate the mushroom was because he knew he was going to die within a few days anyways due to his disease. And since his research was already complete, he didn't want Chopper's efforts to get the mushroom to go in vain, so he decided to eat the mushroom.
😭😭😭 R.I.P Dr. Hiriluk! He was a fucking G. His will passed to Dalton... his dreams will be fulfilled. He will never be forgotten, so he will never die. 🫡
The story the Doc tells Chopper about the thief who had a terminal illness and was ready to die but was "miraculously cured" by seeing Sakura trees in bloom is actually his own story, except he wasn't cured of his disease physically, just mentally, where he went from a thief to being a quack doctor. Well intentioned, but a quack. And while he couldn't cure the sicknesses of the body, he did cure the sickness of the heart and mind.
You both quite liked Chopper's voice. Would you be surprised if I told you this isn't even the seiyu's most famous role despite doing it over 20 years? She's very famous for another anime role that you will both know without a doubt. ⚡ Pika pika~chu.
My first time watching the series I didn't cry until almost episode 300. After a re-watch, and knowing things that happen in the future, I cry at many earlier scenes including this one
Thanks for the very wholesome reaction DeVan! I'm glad you enjoyed this backstory a lot! This is maybe I don't know your names yet, but the guy trying to learn Japanese by repeating the slightly misheard words with a foreign accent (eg 38:34) was very cute!! I remember I started learning Japanese much the same way by connecting the sounds made by the VAs to words in the subtitles too. I would say if you're actually trying to learn Japanese, then subtitled animes are probably not enough for actual Japanese fluency, although they are great for beginners to memorize romaji (Japanese words spelled using the Roman Alphabet), subtitles unfortunately do not teach you how to read or write in Japanese kanji and/or kanas, but it could help widen vocabulary enough for very, very basic conversation in Japanese. If you are actually trying to learn Japanese too, good luck on the study!
In one piece when characters inherit the dream of a mentor they often times 'inherit' their laugh as well. It is subtle touch but I think Its quite brilliant. :)
42:16 i said the same thing in my first watch 😭 basically he was already going to die, seeing how injured Chopper was for his sake he decided to just thank Chopper for the effort and make it seem the mushroom cured him ps: crying like its my first time watching 💔
This bow is exceptional. You will cry several times. For season 2 of One Piece live action, Jamie Lee Curtis will play the role of Dr. Kureha. She is the only one of the cast that we know because she was the one who asked Netflix for this role and of course, she was accepted. For other roles, we don't know. She is a fan of Chopper and Dr. Kureha, so she will give us a lot of emotion for season 2.
Pirates in One Piece tend to be outcasts from society, everyone has an agenda, some make their own freedom by taking from others, some even challenge the very powers that pushed them to become pirates, Dr. Hiruluk's message resonates with Choper, because it resonated with so many pirates in that world. Gol D. Roger may have given them a clear purpose, but there wouldn't be that many pirates if the World Goverment didn't pushed them all the time by commiting horrific and cruel acts upon everyone else under their regime, because at the end everyone wants to be free.
42:17 Hiluluk was dying anyways, and seeing his son in the state he was in just to get him the "medicine", of course he'd drink it. Chopper might be a reindeer, but Hiluluk taught him to be a human, to love life, tonhave a heart before doctor Kureha teaches him how to be a doctor. That's why Chopper will be the best damn doctor in the world.
Fun bit of trivia: Jamie Lee Curtis is wanting to play Kureha for season 2 of the live action. Originally, she wanted to be Miss All Sunday, but admitted she's now too old for the role.
Dr. Kureha were voiced by the Legendary Masako Nozawa , the voice of Goku .. and Luffy were voiced by Mayumi Tanaka , The voice of Goku's Best Friend Krillin
You two are parents to your beloved, i don't know if its odd to call them pets, but they are definitely more than the word. Pretty sure they will act the same Chopper did in search of mushrooms..they already have the Human-Human fruit in them, through love.

At this pace.. another couple will probably get past where my wife left the series.. i can't force someone to like it.. for me, this story is my other world.. and it just feels lonely.. that's why i support those who are new to this series.. i don't even care why you actually do this.. if i see people appreciate this masterpiece.. i fills my heart with joy and warmth.. More power to your channel and you as a couple.♥️
im glad you caught that or i guess gave attention to it.. the way chopper copied hiriluk's actions and laugh was to emphasize that he is a child cause thats how children are they copy what they observe thats the way they learn

@@devanclan When I read the Nami backstory, I remember how I felt like it was one of the saddest stories I have read. And then the Chopper backstory comes out where he experiences how he poisoned the father he loved and it went beyond Nami's story. Aside from all the other strengths, Oda is a master of creating extreme sadness of the heart. I am reading the most recent chapters of One Piece and Oda did it again by writing what I feel is the one of the darkest, saddest stories yet. Enjoy the ride, Chopper's story is not even close to being the last sad story you will encounter in this adventure.

Chopper confusing the poison symbol for the pirate symbol was such a clever writing

It's been about a couple of decades since I saw these episodes for the first time. It's always touching. Hiruluk is the man.
chopper's backstory really makes me cry no matter how many times I've seen it. esp chopper's cry😭
Dr. Hiriluk speech is very inspirational for me.
The only time a man dies if he has been forgotten.
And THIS is why I'm soooooo happy that you guys chose the sub... It would not hit like this at all in the dub

A better translation of Hiruluk's words to Dalton is " if the will is inherited". The theme of Inherited Will features prominently in the series
