@nathandaniels20 yes they are..but you see the latest developments due to LA. So many older parents connected with their sons/daughters living away with this common thing. They talked over OnePiece..OnePiece is a treasure is something a majority never knew of..what the title meant. The success of LA, then it being out of the picture for some years is another thing, but the name OP went far n wide...anime is not for everyone.

So, Nakama is like a comrade, and "Tomodachi" is friend...Nakama is more like a, Homie kinda feeling, like what they call in the hood.
While in this world, other pirates might use the word "Tomodachi" which means like an Average friend, to mock them..like Arlong did..

I'm sure others have pointed this out too, but translating "friend" for "nakama" in the way Luffy uses it, really doesn't do it justice. It should be more like "companion" there is intend rather than only relational meaning in the word.
