    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Otter (Tim Matheson) calls on his Delta brothers to empathize with "total loser" Kent Dorfman.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director John Landis put himself on the map with this low-budget, fabulously successful comedy, which made a then-astounding 62 million dollars and started a slew of careers for its cast in the process. National Lampoon's Animal House is set in 1962 on the campus of Faber College in Faber, PA. The first glimpse we get of the campus is the statue of its founder Emil Faber, on the base of which is inscribed the motto, "Knowledge Is Good." Incoming freshmen Larry "Pinto" Kroger (Tom Hulce) and Kent "Flounder" Dorfman (Stephen Furst) find themselves rejected by the pretentious Omega fraternity, and instead pledge to Delta House. The Deltas are a motley fraternity of rejects and maladjusted undergraduates (some approaching their late twenties) whose main goal -- seemingly accomplished in part by their mere presence on campus -- is disrupting the staid, peaceful, rigidly orthodox, and totally hypocritical social order of the school, as represented by the Omegas and the college's dean, Vernon Wormer (John Vernon). Dean Wormer decides that this is the year he's going to get the Deltas expelled and their chapter decertified; he places the fraternity on "double secret probation" and, with help from Omega president Greg Marmalard (James Daughton) and hard-nosed member Doug Neidermeyer (Mark Metcalf), starts looking for any pretext on which to bring the members of the Delta fraternity up on charges. The Deltas, oblivious to the danger they're in, are having a great time, steeped in irreverence, mild debauchery, and occasional drunkenness, led by seniors Otter (Tim Matheson), Hoover (James Widdoes), D-Day (Bruce McGill), Boon (Peter Riegert), and pledge master John "Bluto" Blutarsky (John Belushi). They're given enough rope to hang themselves, but even then manage to get into comical misadventures on a road trip (where they arrange an assignation with a group of young ladies from Emily Dickinson University). Finally, they are thrown out of school, and, as a result, stripped of their student deferments (and, thus, eligible for the draft). They decide to commit one last, utterly senseless (and screamingly funny) slapstick act of rebellion, making a shambles of the university's annual homecoming parade, and, in the process, getting revenge on the dean, the Omegas, and everyone else who has ever gone against them.

Yeah, he looks more normal than most, and just in general totally regular. (Sidenote: I don't look like him at all, would maybe fit a bit better among others.) But that's part of what makes it funny or "endearing". And his funny expression of course... (And regarding Belushi: of course he looks like an even worse version of him, and the overall reaction is important.)

I always wondered after Hoover exclaims: "He's a legacy from Harrisburg!" [capital of PA], how the people there reacted after hearing that! In 1960 census (just before this 1962 film setting), 79, 700. By the1970 census, it was still sliding down from its 68,000 to only 53,000 in the 1980 census, losing almost 22%. [2020: 50,000] Like most small-city state capitols, most of the workers are in state/government agencies.

The theater in early-Aug. 1978, was a madhouse of craziness by the theme and events of this classic college spoof! People (older teens, young adults; older adults) were just having the time of their life, either remembering their college years, or the attendees in high school (R-rated = 17+ to get in) to be ready for those years. The only film that I saw in a theater that had (more than!) this level of theater laughing, screaming, and jumping on their seats, was "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963). No other film comedy I've seen had such electric enthusiasm and wackiness, parallel with the film theme itself! Just a wonderful 2 hours unforgettable entertainment on A.H. and 3+ hours on IAMMMMW, seen in either Dec. 1963, or Jan. 1964, after its Nov. 7, '63 release at L.A. spanking-new Cinerama Dome, opening to the public that very night for the world premiere of IAMMMMW. A.H. was filmed between Oct. 24, 1977 and mid-Dec. 1977. It's brash and astonishing premiere and vast impact on college life soon after was on Jul. 24, 1978. I still have the Oct. 23, 1978 issue of NEWSWEEK with Belushi on the cover, (with his head surrounded by the garland leaves, as in the film), with the title: "College Humor Comes Back" mentioning the new boom in TOGA PARTIES, (just as in the early-'60s) because of ANIMAL HOUSE.

You guys in 1978 (and those earlier back at least 14+ years) never got the same uninhibited life and freedom as those from before 1965, with that illegal, immoral ground/air War starting that year in some country, 10,000 miles away that most people did not know where it was on the globe! That was how unimportant, un-needed for U.S. security it was until #36, the war-monger and money-hungry alcoholic, bi-polar new resident in the White House who made-up the Gulf of Tonkin "attack" theory to make $$$ from war stock investments prior to the Aug. 1964 "attack." Combat units landed starting on Mar. 8, 1965 near Da Nang, SVN.
