I was competing in D3 track and Edwin raced for a small school in college. I watched him tear thru a stunning 400m anchor leg for their relay to win. It was so beautiful. And what a brilliant man and competitor.
I recall a Sports Illustrated article about Edwin Moses where sport scientists measured just about everything about him. This was rather early in the whole concept of advanced testing for athletes, and what was absolutely astonishing was Edwin's near balanced strength on both the left and right side of his body. His legs, his arms, everything... perfectly in-synch. I don't recall the specific numbers, but they were within a few hundredths of each other, right and left. That was part of his excellence and one of the reasons why he switched legs over the hurdles; most hurdlers use the same leg to stride over the hurdle, but not Edwin. He re-wrote the book on how to run the 400M Hurdle event. I suppose it was the exacting scientist mind of his. After all, he has a degree in physics. :)
Good enough times to compete for either a world or olympic medals. His 19 step racing strategy was difficult to beat as he ran and defeated all comers. A pleasure to watch.

Carter boycotted the Olympics in Moscow. I will always oppose boycotting sporting events and using our athletes as political pawns. For many of those athletes in 1980, that would be their one and only chance of their lifetime. It's just wrong.
It was just one more nail in the Soviet Union's coffin. Don't forget that they had the disaster in Afghanistan against the mujahaddin fighters, who we were slipping arms to, in the mid-80's. Carter was boycotting because of that Russian invasion of Afghanistan. Then came Chernobyl in 87, and finally the Berlin Wall coming down in 89. One time when American foreign policy from Carter through Reagan to Daddy Bush was consistent, and actually achieved the goal they were aiming for. Sad for the athletes, but good for the planet..? Don't forget that the Soviets boycotted us in 1984, so the disrespect was returned. And of course, W. Bush decided to invade that same Afghanistan in 2003. So we could get our butts kicked by the Taliban. Great...some folks never learn.
