The amazing thing about Lewis in those days was, he had to save himself for so many competitions. 100 M, long jump, 200 M, 4X100. I know there are those who were disappointed he didn't "officially" break the long jump record, but when you consider all he did at every meet, it was astonishing that he won as many competitions as he did.

Lewis then was jumping 28 with ease. Conley might have hit 28. He was high 27. Then Powell jumped over 28. Twice I think. Low 28. The meet that Powell and Lewis had them pushing each other had Powell jumping over 28 5 times. So only 5 guys ever jumped over 28. 2 guys one time each. Beamon who never jumped 28 ft. Just 29 2 once. Powell and Lewis who jumped over 28 feet 100 times?

I remember I was pretty much always the fastest kid in my school, and baseball I was always the lead off and was always the guy that was stealing bases, football I was always one of the fastest kids so Carl Lewis was the kind of athlete that I thought I was lol and could relate to. Blast from the past when running sub-10 seconds was a super rare event. Now sprinters are breaking 10 seconds in the first round. A modern day high school sprinter could actually win a medal in this 1984 Olympic Final race.

Carl Lewis has broken his silence on allegations that he was the beneficiary of a drugs cover-up, admitting he had tested positive for banned substances but claiming he was just one of "hundreds" of American athletes who were allowed to escape bans.
"There were hundreds of people getting off," he said. "Everyone was treated the same."
Lewis has now acknowledged that he failed three tests during the 1988 US Olympic trials, which under international rules at the time should have prevented him from competing in the Seoul games two months later.

That was his technique. An olympic runner giving a 100% reaches top speed at around 80 meters. At that point they take it down a notch and maintain that speed as they cross the finish line. Carl lewis did the opposite, He'd run at approximately 90% and then time it that he crosses the finish line giving 100%. That's why he's always coming from behind when he races.

Best form I've ever seen anywhere. A notorious slow start because he came out of the blocks so gradually, always executing perfect form. Guys like Ben would jump erect and reach upright into the first 2-3 steps. Carl tended to start separating at 60, reach top speed at 80 and hold it through but (as some do) he might accelerate after reaching top speed. That describes his typical race, and it's almost exactly what happened in this final.

"Carl Lewis has broken his silence on allegations that he was the beneficiary of a drugs cover-up, admitting he had tested positive for banned substances but claiming he was just one of "hundreds" of American athletes who were allowed to escape bans.
"There were hundreds of people getting off," he said. "Everyone was treated the same."
Lewis has now acknowledged that he failed three tests during the 1988 US Olympic trials, which under international rules at the time should have prevented him from competing in the Seoul games two months later."

The length of his legs, his stride......that did it all. I'm not saying he didn't work hard to win but, for the love of God, he was gifted with divine genetics.

Carl Lewis is the greatest of the 20th century. He covered 100 m, 200 m, Long Jumb and 4 x 100 m. Nobody before was that dominant.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Hold on there Ernst. You never heard of Jesse Owens?
Jesse won 4 golds in Berlin, on a cinder track, with all the pressure of a country on him. After 1936, the next games was 1948. No telling what Jesse might have accomplished had war not interrupted the Olympics.

Man, those 4 years of Stanozol replacement therapy fair sorted Ben Johnsons lagging game out.
    10.24 in 84 vs 9.79 in 88.
If it wasnt for the haters singling him out Ben would be the greateast sprinter of all time !
If he had similar improvement between 88-92 he woulda ran 9.55 in Barcelona, EASY !

Are you cRaZy or just plain stoopid ?
He dropped his time from his first Olympic final by 0.45 of a sec in 4 yrs to become the first man ever under 9.9 & 9.8 secs.
Thats 0.11 secs per yr on average.
If he only improved 0.06 secs per year on his second Olympic doping cycle he woulda hit 9.55
Johnson on drugs was well capable of that improvement. Look how much Linford Christie & Carl Lewis improved between 88-92. Lewis ran a pb n broke the world record in 91 3 yrs after this race.
If Johnson hadnt got caught he was either gonna hit 9.55 or die of heart failure or some other steroid related disease.
