A lot of times, we tend to think of intensity in our singing as the same thing as adding distortion or grit... Or maybe just singing higher and louder in our chest voice. But then you study a guy like Matt Bellamy from Muse and realize: "Wow, this guy has crazy intensity, control and range and he's emoting better than some of the grittiest singers out there!!"
How can you harness a strong emotional connection to your voice and get an aggressive and intense sound without only having to rely on distortion? Study Matt Bellamy with me :) I go through 10 studio excerpts, practice them, improvise and play with them and analyze how we can put some of what Matt does into our own voices! This was a fun lesson to do. I hope you'll check it out and let me know what you think!
I'm 66, I've been playing drums and guitar all my life but I always felt stuck in a low vocal range. Thanks to Chris'course "Discover my voice", I can now sing songs which I could not cover a few weeks ago. It's great fun to practice and I will enroll in any new course, if any.

I was hoping to see him perform some of Bellamy's more chilled songs like soldiers poem etc he didn't get there at all. He's good tho but it's not all about hitting the high register. Show us some lows!

Yes, love Matt. His range of tone is so wide, going from stuff like screaming Darkshines to crooning Feeling Good. Not to mention making wicked high falsetto not sound silly
I started to sing because of Matt Bellamy, so this video was a clear instant view for me :) I really liked your approach in studying his way of singing and I felt like you were trying to "Cornellize" him, in the standup examples, but that's probably because of your personal influence. Really good video, I feel like there should be a part 2, where you don't just analyze Muse famous songs, but cover also some other small gems (from the first albums maybe, where he was more natural - and a bit gritty - and with a less mature voice). Microcuts could be an example of a different head voice, but also Cave or Coma (b-side). Thank you Chris, awesome as always!

So a quick anecdote if anybody reads this: Chris Liepe is seriously one of the finest vocal coaches online. I am 19, first year of college, started singing for a band we formed. I always had a good range but could never properly use it. And through his videos, I was able to really develop my mixed voice and hone my chest voice that made a huge difference in our recording demos and performing live without me burning out or not being able to hit notes. Before that, I always felt uncomfortable with my voice as if I were singing and yet felt like I wasn't doing it to my full potential. Chris really helped me rediscover my voice and now we're shortly heading into the studio to record our first EP.
Also (and I apologise if this sounds too on the nose, absurd or selfish), but can you do a video on Liam Gallagher and his perfect use of a high chest voice with nasal?

Me watching this after hearing a story by Chris Wolstenholme (Muse bassist) about Matt singing in early days, way before they got signed. The sound engineer at their gig at local theatre saying "Guys, I think you're great but you need to change your vocalist. I can't hear what he sings"
Next time they came back to perform, Matt slayed everything. Today he's one of the greatest vocalists I've ever known.
Bellamy is so great. His fans seem to like a lot of his older style of singing. To me, it's more harsh and shrill. The last 4 albums or so, though, he sounds great and full.
I love both "eras" of singing honestly. His younger voice was so raw, which really served to his benefit sometimes. For the past decade, it's been super refined and professional, which sounds incredible. I mean his voice on The Second Law tour was straight up ridiculous, I love it

Back then he did a lot of gasps and it did some unique atmosphere on concerts.
As far as albums go, The 2nd Law has probably the best singing in it IMO.

5:41: Thanks for explaining why we hear that sound at the end of lines. It's because of compression. No vocal coach I've seen ever mentioned this. And nobody has ever been able to explain either. And at 13:33, building up tension into a head voice note. Never heard of this before, but I already see the applications in singing. You are the best!

I am about 100% sure that everyone who clicked into this video, including me, wanted to know what the hell he is doing in "Plug in Baby". That song is filled with some really different stuff, especially how he says and carries the word "game" in the second verse.
Personally I am able to sing the verses close to him, that chorus he isn't really distorting his voice only on a few words but pulls it back so it is confusing me a bit.
Matt Bellamy is truly a great vocalist.
Also I'd like to see a video where "Aftermath" is used as an example. That glorious song the end choruses sound so huge and so........well glorious is the only word I can think of to convey that type of sound that almost falls into an anthem.

This was an amazing video. So many singers were inspired by Jeff Buckley during his much too short time here, Bellamy and York specifically. Another unique vocalist within that sphere of influence that would be great to add to this “series”, that was also heavily influenced by Buckley that might be fun to do is Brandon Boyd. Awesome overview of Matt's voice! As I watched this, I was reflecting on my earlier days of studying the voice, its is insane how much breathe control and skill is required in order to sound like him! If anyone here is a fan of Verona from the new album, that's a great song to practice switching between head and chest voice. I found that running through it a bunch of times can get you in great shape!

I would try to sing Muse songs with the “dying cat” technique that you did with Chris Cornell, except that they were in low pitch (think of a cat meowing on a low pitch), but your analysis has given me new insights about how to learn Matt Bellamy’s singing technique. Also, I’ve been waiting for this analysis for a long time, so thank you, Chris!
Funny how you detect techniques discouraged by many vocal coaches. In this video, the singer starts with closed vowels and make them clearer. Many coaches say you should always keep your vowels clear.
And another one: The singer lowers his soft palate. Many coaches say to ALWAYS keep your soft palate as high as possible to create more space.
I love to see your analysis even when I don't know how to sing, I would love to try it but the truth is that I know I don't have as much singing talent :(
I am so glad I discovered this and your other videos today. I'm a guitar player who has to sing Hysteria for a Battle of the Bands in August. I've been really struggling with my chest voice and what I now understand to be compression. I'll be studying this video a lot and will start your free course tonight. "Fun" fact: many points of this video can easily be put on a "Giuliano Sangiorgi (Negroamaro frontman) vocal style tutorial"! I'm not that much into them, but the similarities are huge now that you so clearly (as always! 2.0) pinpointed them.
Being a huge Chris Cornell fan, I've started following this channel for those videos about his vocal style, and I sincerily feel the urge to tell you: those helped me immensely! So thank you so much for that! Never found an online vocal teacher so clearly explanatory about diaphragmatic support, mixed voice and all those things that are really tough to explain in a "non face-to-face" environment!
Last thought: practicing the -Cornell style- I've "stumbled" into use the same techniques to sing Bon Scott era AC/DC songs and, putting aside the obvious differences, I found some sort of similarities, so: what about doing a "Bon Scott singing style" video? And even more: what about "Analising the differences between Cornell, Scott and even Brian Johnson vocal styles?" Not for been an AC/DC psyco-fan, 'cause I'm not, but just 'cause I think they could be interesting subjects to make some videos about. Obviously only if you are into it!
With that said: thanks again for this huge help you always (3.0) give to me and to all those people like me that may have felt the feeling of being stuck in their singing!

Great video demonstration of one of my favorite singers of all time! I wish on time is running out you would’ve shown how you hit that vibrato on the highest note which you did it in the video but I have no idea how you did it, the “yea, yea, yea” part. It’s so hard can’t seem to add vibrato to it.
It can be tough to harness a good healthy vibrato for sure!
Thx once again for this video! Even though Bellamy's vocal style isn't really my cup of tea, I managed to learn some things out of this video. My requests might appear a little random, but I'd be very interested in similar videos about Brian Johnson or Pelle Almqvist, who is the singer of The Hives, I think they are using a similar technique. It came to my attention that they are singing much higher than their talking voices are, yet they manage to apply pressure and strength to their singing, almost yelling the tunes out. It might be too close to the video on Axl Rose, but I find his vocals a little more on the "thinner" side and as if he's somehow using his chest voice much less than Johnson or Almqvist.
And I'd also agree with Pradyuman Grewal, a video about Liam Gallagher would be great!

There is an English tradition of sorts he is invoking. There were many English singers in the 80s who mostly held their breath as they sang.
I say with confidence that Matt Bellamy is one of the greatest singers of the past 20 years. MUSE it is just not meant to everybody due to the massive amount of genres that they play, but boy the man can SING.

When I heard him sing "Showbiz" live for the first time I was like: "There's nothing Matt Bellamy can't do"...
I'd love you to analyse how he manages to get those really high "not falsetto" notes... sometimes it feels even like he can get higher notes on his chest voice than on his head voice. Is that something about the tightness of his vocal cords? Is it somehow dangerous in the long term?

Right?! no not dangerous at all... I actually demonstrated some of that in the "improv" or screwing around stuff I did on the standing mic. Although, I didn't tie it directly to a song snippet. It's a heady mix... super tight cords, well supported :)

It's because he has a very high voice. Which isn't something so usual, especially for male singers. He even complained in an interview about having a "girly voice", but I find it sooo suitable for me, because I have an Ariana Grande-ish vouce, so for me it's too hard to find rock bands/songs that fit me! 😅

You are a true inspiration! Thanks to your videos, I learned how to properly scream and use grit without hurting my throat, and I took some inspiration from your vocal analysis of Sam Carter. When I saw that you did a vocal analysis of Matt Bellamy, I instantly clicked the link! xD Muse is one of my all time favourite bands, and even though I debunked some of the stuff Matt does with his voice, your video helped me get an even deeper understandind of that.

Dont forget that his small body also affects the tone, just like Michael Gregorio, i tested that on myself, i was fat i couldn’t sing, i turned myself to skinny (no muscle mass, no fat ) and my voice became higher n better, you know why guitarists removes backplates from strats ? Because it becomes reasoning with the body, its the same thing with body weight

Hi after watching one video I instantly subscribed! I was wondering can you make a video on how to sing like lady gaga? For example when she sings bad romance especially in the last chorus she sings/shouts it really gritty/gruff, I watched videos on how to do it but every time I try I get a scratchy feeling in my throat
