Ok, so I’ve been singing over 10 years in various styles and could never do the “Chris Cornell” sound. After 5 minutes of practicing this technique I am hitting notes I’ve never dreamed of. I’m testing it out on all sorts of 80s Hair Metal songs and it totally works! My mind is BLOWN!!! Dude, you are honestly the best vocal coach online right now cause you don’t care about sounding like a dying cat as long as it gets you to where you want to sound. I really love your videos and I’ve even purchased Ken Tamplin stuff in the past that didn’t help much. Thank you so much for being so humble and awesome.

You know what's amazing? In Chris's prime with soundgarden he literally would sound perfect for entire concerts, obviously after all that time of playing his heart out during audioslave he had a little bit of trouble doing that live again. Some people will never understand how great he was
Audioslave happened at a time when he was coming out of rehab, and not doing very well in a lot of ways. The energy it takes to sing like that is as much a soul thing as a voice thing (I imagine). Saw him in Soundgarden at a festival in Sydney with multiple stages and you could not just hear but feel his voice over the top of several bands at once. He was the fucking greatest.

My husband was a good friend of Christophers & learned loads from him over the years. Christopher was obviously a huge & very natural talent, but he'd worked incredibly hard for years to be that good. He did also know a lot about singing technique & had studied under a well respected vocal coach for sometime to learn how to improve his stamina on tour as after the GnR tour I think it was 92 he was getting fairly severe vocal fatigue. It worked & after this his studio confidence grew & his longevity live also was much improved. I think actually Layne also went to the same guy out on the lake for vocal training. Perhaps a shame Ed never did as he does look very annoyed with himself these days when he can't do what he wants to. Though it kinda doesn't matter, Ed was always warts & all perhaps these days it's his gravitas as a human that keeps us all listening. Great vid, really enjoyed it, cheers!

I have been playing with the controlled scream/ “Hawk Call” of David Lee Roth trying to add the distortion of Sammy Hagar, all along trying to find the pathway to Steve Perry, Peter Cetera, Miljenko Matijevic, Freddie Mercury and Chris Cornell, and I believe you have found one of the keys to the pathway here... vocal exploration is often times isolating a mouth and throat shape, and going to nature for these sounds is a great idea! I guess if I will ever unlock these secrets, it’s meow or never.
I am a professional Singer...trained classically, but been singing Rock/Blues,and Jazz for years...I LIKE THIS! GOOD ADVICE for Male or Female Singers!THANKS!
I am a huge Chris Cornell fan! I have learned from a few different coaches and very few manage to properly describe how people should actually feel physically when they are performing with the correct technique. Your videos are great for that. Thanks, Chris! Just subscribed to your free course.
I think it was Plato that said" a life not reflected upon is a life wasted" the fact that you had the insight to try and and then purrfect it (sorry had to do it), talks volumes of your wisdom. But to pass it on shows grace of spirit. I will be trying it. And thanks for your generosity.
It was Socrates (Plato's teacher, mentor, friend) who said, "the unexamined life is not worth living". Definitely wise words. After all, in the same vein, if we don't learn from history (our own, the worlds'), we are bound to make the same mistakes.
Man this is incredible !! This meow technique is the shit !! You've discovered something that has surely been discovered before. TWO REASONS why I think this works so well. #1- Your opening up your voice box/larynx in a chromatic and thorough way and if you look deep in your throat as you rounding your notes, it is moving expanding at the top and in every way it possibly can it seems. Picture a tornado that is changing shapes top and bottom. Expanding and contracting sort of like a balloon but in waves. I couldn't sing shit. I was tired and voice was coated with crud. Did the meows up high and it instantly helps and after 2 to 3 minutes I could sing anything as if i was having my best day. AT 8 AM IN THE MORNING.
I recently have had a trip with my voice; I discovered, something like two months ago, how to do mid/high pitched screaming without grating my vocal chords and not getting hurt, which led to me being able to control my diaphragm much better. So I started my discovery voyage into the world of singing without *sounding like a dying cat* and I've started hitting some high notes, but I still need some singing lessons to get stability. Hell, that was blog if I ever seen one. Nice video man, keep up the good work!
Yep, bang on. He uses a total different technique and you're a lot closer than other vocal coaches on here. I've been doing very similar for awhile now. If be interested if Chris stumbled across this technique or if he just sang that way. Easiest way to hit the higher notes, with distortion, but with that self preservation too.
Oh, my goodness! We thought we were the only ones who did this!!!!!!! Me and my sister do cat noises to warm up. One of the reasons why I joined your channel, was because I was looking for warm ups to add to my routine. I’m just in shock, because we have a cat that loves it when we hit whatever note she hits. She actually meows more when we do that. We’ve noticed that it made that part of the voice that can’t be accessed with just a warm up like Ye Yaye Yo Ya with the five tone scale up and down. Anyway, we love how you do this! Keep it up!!!! BTW, we’re a little old school, so not sure who Chris Cornell is. You sound very young. But good stuff. I also loved the one where you were talking, and using pitch with your talking voice. Really great teaching, man.
Yep, the cat meow worked for me too, I never thought I could reach these notes like that. I had to stop the video and go watch the vocal fry one in the middle of this. So within 40 mins I can do it. Awesome Teacher Chris. You're amazing.
Could I just say that I watched this video almost 6 months ago and pretty much because of these tips I can sing about a 4th higher than before and about twice as loud. And, it sounds good! I've been getting lots of compliments! Thank you!
He said song writing was like tuning into a radio station. I guess it was a station ran by cats. On a serious tip....you know "The Zone"? Where in athletics or physically stressful event's you become Neo? I think that's what Cornell experienced but for song writing.
Man, I gotta say, your videos are so encouraging. You show that discovering how the voice works is trial and error and that it's not always going to sound pretty. But the result will be vocal quality. Also your intuitive approach, describing the sensation, and only backing that up with the medical terms, is resonating with me more than any other youtube voice teacher and even Melissa Cross, so far. And I've seen a lot of them. So, thank you!
I've been idolizing Mr Cornell since I was 9 years old and I'm almost 41 so without sounding like the cat I just mimicked him and them and Matt Cameron and everyone else in the band! ;)😅
im really liking your channel, ive just stumbled in it accidentaly on facebook and i already went thru several videos, i think you have a natural knack for teaching, the practical advices you give are very usefull in visualising how things work, great work. Chris is also on my top list of favourite singers, that man had incredible talent
I think that because you did this keeping a straight face is what made me keep my smile the whole video. Useful tips! I really appreciate this video for giving me an idea on a different take for vocalizing.
I love early-mid 90's grunge, with Staley being my favorite (talk about power AND range!), with Vedder and Cornell right behind. But what a great story, with the morals being: 1. Inspiration can come from anywhere, even in the simplest, most innocent ways, and 2. I'm sure you were not happy about reading such a comment, but you took that anger (or whatever negative adjective fits) and processed it into something positive and your own. Again, great story, thanks for sharing.
Dude screw all these hater comments. You are the closet sounding cover I've heard yet to Cris Cornell.. thank u for sharing your craft and best of luck on your singing career! You have a great voice..
This works!!!! I think the single best tip I've ever gotten to really enhance my tone, is the whole vocals are breath control head voice and chest voice. This is the next level of that! Can't wait to see where this takes my vocals. Ty for posting
Cornells voice has been my dream voice for many years. I'm cursed with a very deep voice and I am always looking to push my range. Have a listen if you wish. All tips appreciated! Subbed!
Good job explaining this technique. It took me years to figure out how he sang like that and be able to hit most of the notes without cringing at my own voice.
Thank you for the tips! And if you’re into Chris Cornell-type of vocals, you should totally check out the band Big Wreck. The guy sounds EXACTLY like Chris from time to time.
thank you been practicing this for a while and now my voice shot through the roof. I think im coming in at 4 and a half octaves now. your method is great
Agreed.. greatest voice ever. I feel like i can do his low ranges well but like you described the power of the scream feel is so hard to hit and hold.. i'll definitely check out some more of your vids. Thanks.
Would just like to say thank you. I’m no Chris Cornell or any of the other incredible singers you’ve done on this channel. But your videos have given me the confidence and ability to front a band. As you can prob tell by my videos there’s a long way to go as we’ve only done 3 gigs but cheers 🤟🤟🤟
Hey Chris, thanks for this. I'm not a singer, although I've always sung along (badly, but passionately) to all my favourite songs. I wasn't ever a guitarist, but Chris Cornell's music became the impetus for me teaching myself guitar (with the invaluable help of youtube). Had always believed that singing even anything like him would not be possible, because sweet Jesus what a voice. Having seen this I'm going to give it a shot. Signed up for your free lessons, so thankyou. (with the help and inspiration of two other Chris', how can I fail). All the best to you.
Dude, I've been singing and in the biz for almost 20 years and I think this was so amazingly explained. Very well done. I'll definitely be checking out your other videos.
Chris Cornell is my favorite vocalist as well as Andrew Wood and Maynard James Keenan, among others haha. Louder than Love is my favorite ep/album of theres!
Chris, your teaching approach without all the typical anatomy and technique jargon is a good one. I've always handled the highest (male) harmonies in every band. I learned how to sing high with power as you explain here, by pure experimentation. Though I don't have the Cornell grind...that's a new challenge to achieve.
yea yeah, you´re right .... i´m a drummer (but huge fan of chris voice) and your tenor voice sounds similar to jeff buckley ... another great musician of 90´s
Thanks Chris..I damaged my voice for singing without learning the proper technique..and have to quit singing..but your video help me get back into singing and hit the higher register, thanks Chris 🙏🙏🙏
Hands down the most informative / helpful video I've ever seen on TH-cam. Subscribed and combing through your vids. Thank you for this. There's so much more here than trying to sing like Chris, this is giving you the tools to figure out how to develop almost any technique needed to sound like the greats.
I tried singing with Chris at a concert when he played "Say Hello to Heaven". I had to stop at the end because I couldn't go 2 octaves higher. If you can do that song, I would love to see if you can do the end.

As a singer I found this incredibly useful. Eureka!!
Been practicing doing cat noises. Now I got female cats hanging around my house all day long.
Isaac Benjamin Me too and now my neighbors think I’m a hoarder.
Could I just say that I watched this video almost 6 months ago and pretty much because of these tips I can sing about a 4th higher than before and about twice as loud. And, it sounds good! I've been getting lots of compliments! Thank you!
Chris is the reason that I decided singing is a thing that I had better do..
Thanks for the info.
Rock on
Dino
He's my favorite as well. 51 yr old Aussie , thankyou. Subbed and notifications on.
I tried this and my cats left the room :-(
Mine too
And mine too - except the oriental Sid, who joined in

What really
Thank you so much for trying to teach the man's voice. You are a scholar of Chris Cornell and he is the legend
Next up: How to write Black Hole Sun in 20 minutes like CC did, but with 20 cats sitting beside you. #blackmeowsun
He said song writing was like tuning into a radio station. I guess it was a station ran by cats. On a serious tip....you know "The Zone"? Where in athletics or physically stressful event's you become Neo? I think that's what Cornell experienced but for song writing.
Outstanding... Cornell truly was the greatest. My hero as well sir. Ty for making this!
that dying cat thing definitely sounds like early 90s Chris, like Ultramega OK - Louder than Love era
Even into badmotorfinger. His voice changed in superunknown
You mean late 80’s haha. But yeah you’re right
Man, I gotta say, your videos are so encouraging.
This channel is going to be huge. Great work.
I really appreciate this video for giving me an idea on a different take for vocalizing.
this guy is funny and educational at the same time with out even trying lol
It's amazing how much better visuals work than mechanics when it comes to singing. Excellent video!
Kinda a Robert plant thing too, awesome 🤘
I love early-mid 90's grunge, with Staley being my favorite (talk about power AND range!), with Vedder and Cornell right behind.
But what a great story, with the morals being: 1. Inspiration can come from anywhere, even in the simplest, most innocent ways, and 2. I'm sure you were not happy about reading such a comment, but you took that anger (or whatever negative adjective fits) and processed it into something positive and your own. Again, great story, thanks for sharing.
I think the title of this video should be, How To Sing Like Chris Cornell's Cat
Oh thank you so much for educating me about how studio vocalist work! No wonder it's always do flawless
I’ve been baffled by Cornell’s highs for years. I haven’t heard anyone describe it quite like this, but it makes perfect sense.
Dude this was perfect, just with that cat thing I was already making more progress than months trying to get this sound, thank you
Dude screw all these hater comments. You are the closet sounding cover I've heard yet to Cris Cornell.. thank u for sharing your craft and best of luck on your singing career! You have a great voice..
U haven't listened to natew101
This works!!!! I think the single best tip I've ever gotten to really enhance my tone, is the whole vocals are breath control head voice and chest voice. This is the next level of that! Can't wait to see where this takes my vocals. Ty for posting
Cornells voice has been my dream voice for many years. I'm cursed with a very deep voice and I am always looking to push my range. Have a listen if you wish. All tips appreciated! Subbed!
You are not cursed - appreciate what you have and push further
@@METTI1986LA thanks onwards and upwards!
I LOOOOOOVVVVEEEE Big Wreck!!!
thank you been practicing this for a while and now my voice shot through the roof. I think im coming in at 4 and a half octaves now. your method is great
Agreed.. greatest voice ever. I feel like i can do his low ranges well but like you described the power of the scream feel is so hard to hit and hold.. i'll definitely check out some more of your vids. Thanks.
Welcome to the channel! Done lots on Cornell... and another one is going up tomorrow :)
Wooow, just one of the best vocal coaches I've ever seen 👏
Would just like to say thank you. I’m no Chris Cornell or any of the other incredible singers you’ve done on this channel. But your videos have given me the confidence and ability to front a band. As you can prob tell by my videos there’s a long way to go as we’ve only done 3 gigs but cheers 🤟🤟🤟
My new favorite TH-cam vocal teacher!
Hey Chris, I've used a few of your guitar lessons on Jamplay recently. I had no idea that you were a singer too! You're a hell of a guitar player btw!
Thanks!
Chris Purrnell
Sorry, just had to… Cool video
He is my favorite vocalist of all time as well!
My wife ran in the room on me while watching the cat session, saying “WTF is going on in here”?!?!
Cant belive im doin this :D Chris is now in a beautiful place, full of light.
There's a light that never goes out
Can you release a video on Deftones vocalist Chino Moreno.. His technique & style of his singing... & thanks for sharing lessons on vocal tips. 🙂
He's my favorite vocalist of all time as well.
Great direction for a character to sing from. I dont think any one in the music industry is doing this style of singing right meow
Though I don't have the Cornell grind...that's a new challenge to achieve.
yea yeah, you´re right .... i´m a drummer (but huge fan of chris voice)
and your tenor voice sounds similar to jeff buckley ... another great musician of 90´s
Thanks Chris..I damaged my voice for singing without learning the proper technique..and have to quit singing..but your video help me get back into singing and hit the higher register, thanks Chris 🙏🙏🙏
Go see Foo Fighters live, I swear Dave Grohl pushes harder live than on the record
Thats true - love them especially live
It's amazing he's pushing at least 20 years while doing that consistently on tour, pure rockstar
@@chaseclarkemusic yea, sadly it will crash down on him eventually. RIP the rock legend's future voice
Hands down, the most original voice lesson I’ve ever seen 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 but I enjoyed it! 🤘🏻
I was/am a CC fan. Fans of Chris might also like to check out Richie Kotzen Or Big Wrech as these guys both sing awesome and at times sing very much like Chris did. Peace.
CC has been one of my favorites for years. I've just discovered Richie Kotzen in the past year or two. I absolutely love him. Every fan of CC needs to check out Richei
@@JasonHannah maybe check out Miljenko (steelheart) also, old school rock but man alive one of the best male singers esp for high notes: th-cam.com/video/LW-nq5LM0Hs/w-d-xo.html
man i just checked your videos & figured out that you're a great teacher who don't care about money & views!!!u deserve more subs...god bless u
I get what you're saying. It's similar with chino from deftones. His high notes aren't falsetto, they aren't full voice... they're somewhere in between. Like a closed throat whistle thing
Chris Cornell is also my favorite vocalist of all time. This is a wonderful video.
I've been really struggling trying to find a voice of singing voice I guess and oh my gosh the cat sound seriously opened up a whole new tone. We'll see what my wife thinks LOL thank you for the tip!
About using the critic of the "sounding like a Dying Cat" as a possibility to practice and discover a way to figure out a way to develop the desired voice tone: Your a GENIOUS. Loved that!
