I've been complaining about this for a while now. I am so glad to see more people have their EARS and their eyes opened to this tomfoolery! Good going Brad, i'm so glad that you make these videos. 💯
Musicianship seems like a lost art where now it's treated like an Olympic sport where it's how fast you can play, but they still use fakery to achieve it.
I’m not surprised about this one bit, I’m twenty nine and have been playing guitar for over 15 years. It seems like every young guitarist that started playing after myself and other millenials did are obsessed with perfection, virality and replicating other players styles and techniques. Gone are the days, where players would cut their teeth to pave their own way and pick up their instrument with reckless abandon, it’s sad because these behaviours are a consistent culture within the Gen Z and younger of players. I know because I saw it throughout while meeting young players in music school and in other settings.
I've been playing for close to 40 years and I definitely noticed the obsession with perfection with younger players, and their obsession with trying to play cover material note for note. I used to transcribe music a lot so I know about figuring stuff out note for note but at a certain point you need to find your own identity. I walked into a GC many years ago and heard some younger guy playing a bunch of shred licks and with I guess his friends standing around him. His technique was very good but I wanted to satisfy my own curiosity. So I sat in the same section and picked up a guitar and I just started playing a simple 1 4 5 and I made it easy , I played it in A. I didn't do any 2 5 1 or 1 6 2 5 turn around trickery, lol. I looked at him and said follow me man lets jam a bit. He shit his pants..the look on his face was comedy gold. He fell apart. I can shred all day but I'm old school, I've played in a lot of bands and know how to jam over a simple blues progression. He didn't. I wasn't a dick but I said to him you need to listen some Albert King man and relax, breath. Basically learn the basics before you start sweeping, string skipping, tapping, etc...
Millennial here, I always just wanted to learn how to play guitar. I went in for one trial guitar lesson and the guys like what do you want to play? I'm like guitar... He's like but what? I'm like idk, I never wanted to play anyone else's songs. I like jazz and stuff like that, but I never wanted to play like someone else, or play someone else's songs. I just want to make music and play the guitar. Now I'm playing guitar but need to learn a lot more stuff, I guess learning some songs might help. 😂
The insanity began when that Guitar Hero game was released....young people think they are actually playing and maybe thats why musicians are marginalized by this generation.
Totally! I've been telling people this since that dumb game was released. Those people actually thought they were a REAL guitarist, minus the years and maybe decades of practicing and rehearsals for LIVE shows where all of your skills and errors are totally raw on display for anyone attending to see.
This is the whole reason I'm considering going to School of Rock is so I can play with a band. I don't trust people enough to form a band on craiglist or facebook. 😂
New subscriber and 30 plus year veteran of the music business (teaching/gigging). You speak my language and I look forward to watching more of your videos. Sometimes I get students who think they are "already there" when they come to me for lessons but when I suggest we jam a 12 bar blues in Ab, I can tell within seconds what's going to happen by how wide their eyes get, lol.
Hi Brad did you see the article on Ultimate Classic Rock saying "Just 29 of the Top 200 albums on Billboard's year-end 2024 chart were from rock artists. Depressingly, none of them were released this year. All but five of the 29 were greatest hits collections." How sad and frustrating...
Right on Brad! Old School is where the truth comes out! My friend told me that his decades ago audition as a bass player/singer for a musicians referral service had him playing a few tunes on his bass with no band, then singing totally unaccompanied, no PA/mike, just belting out a tune. Today's younger cats are shorting themselves big time when they don't keep it real.
I am familiar with a few of Polyphias instrumentals but checked out a live jam with Seve Vai after watching your video. You are right, they really struggled with improvising!!
@@badbradsorry bro, to say Tim has trouble with improvising is just nuts. Go look at Tim pre polyphia blowing up. Their are tons of videos of both those guys improving with their dads. It's pretty great. Btw I've played for 30 years, so yes I do know what guitar playing is.
Another great topic! Thanks for pointing out a serious problem. Note that you can see fakery in old music videos where bands were shown performing their hit songs but the guitar player's fingers weren't anywhere near where the notes were on the fretboard, or the signers' lips weren't moving in time with the vocals. It's always existed, and now amateurs can do it. Sadly, fakery is likely to continue to get worse and more difficult to detect given technological improvements including A.I. Don't be bitter. We've got to have faith that most young people are wise to fakery and are not becoming too cynical. Lke you, they've seen too much of it. Many of us enjoy the truthtellers on TH-cam such as you and for example, "Wings of Pegasus".
As a teacher I would try to find acoustic versions played live. I was the teacher that would get my students to play at open mics or one of my jams I would put on with my musical friends. Like the old days in the 70s. I would show a kid some Taylor Swift or Beyonce production then contrast it with a stripped down version. Part of my job as a teacher , I'm the subversive who shows students what is real.
All these kids or older on social media, sweeping and tapping like crazy and saying Jimmy Page was sloppy, ok. 😂 Rock n roll needs edge, not sterile "perfection and faster is always better". I dont think some of them have any idea concept of what music is. Its not a computer game. They should listen some Billie Holiday or Louis Armstrong.
Right on Brad! That kind of fakery drives me crazy. The problem is with the people who think it’s all real. And as you said, if you try and call out the fakers, the “believers” jump all over you. 😂
Man, you really had me going there for a few seconds! I almost thought the video was actually going to be about "Fake Gator Gods." I can honestly say with complete conviction that my guitar playing genuinely sucks. No artificial manipulation necessary!
I love those rock players that can improvise well, those guys who you can see two (or more) times in one week and not hear the exact same set list and most definitely not the same solos because they improvise to various degrees. Most recently (October), I saw *Richie Kotzen* 9 days apart and the shows were so dynamic because he just lets go and jams. *Yngwie* is another one I've seen only about 3-5 apart. I saw *Frank Gambale* twice in about one week and he was phenomenal, improvising like crazy (got to have a beer w/him after the second show!). Another is Norwegian hard rock guitarist *Ronni Le Tekrø,* who I visited and hung with for 5 days (of an awesome 10-day visit; super nice guy). I saw 3 shows in those 5 days and he's almost always playing the solos a little differently every night. Those guys (and similar) are the real deal. Then we have (and had) guys like John Scofield, Mike Stern, Allan Holdsworth, Scott Henderson and newer guys like *Julian Lage* and *Gilad Hekselman.* I love going to their shows because I know I'm not going to hear their albums reproduced and I know I'm going to be blown away and inspired.
The rubber meets the road when the red light goes on and the drummer counts off. Real guitar sounds old, because it’s real. I like real guitar. Too old to change.
Man-same. I had a student 14 or 15, who ONLY wanted to work on Polyphia stuff. Don’t get me wrong, love that band. I bought their vinyl with GOAT on it in fact. But I tried and tried to get him to work on his theory, improvising-no go. He was on his way to being a great player too. He eventually stopped taking lessons. Bummer. I was fortunate to have a mentor(in the early 90’s) who studied with Linc Chamberland & Ted Greene. I don’t think kids these days seek mentoring anymore.
The internet is full of hucksters. I personally never saw someone doing what you are describing, but im sure they are out there. Playing fast wad never something i was really into when i listen to music, im more of a gilmore, the edge, kind of guy which ismore about phrasing, melody, song writing.

I really suck for real and it’s embarrassingly apparent (and real) in my videos. I wish I could play what I hear but, I’m still having a blast trying! And I love making human mistakes with other real humans while creating vibrations that sometimes pleasantly move the air!

Authenticity is getting to be a rough haul for many, will be a value to be able to find it still . .. appreciate ya... Oh yeah I think I read Tim Henson was a guitar hero gamer and learned that way... but yeah incredible talent when on the rail... but live off the grid not so much... I saw that thing with Vai... heh, yeah it was uncomfortable for them... but those totally fake folks are an oddity to sanity to me...
Though I agree with you 100%, I am willing to give a pass to some of the younger players. Especially the kids who came up playing during the pandemic. It’s possible they had whacky parents who kept them isolated and these methods are all the kids know because they’ve never interacted with fellow musicians.
Facts aweaome. I only play when I play.. I'm a nonnlracticinguaician n we hot gold Sunday night. I ayes slide we banged out some serious southern rock. Had the right guitarist and the right vocals. Keep it human .
It’s all about views now. A lot of people, especially young ones, think their path to riches is just pumping out bullshit content. Basically flat out lying.
Better get some hairspray in that wig dude the wind is tearing it up. I kid I kid thanks for the great content. I been playing for 40 years and recently started teaching a friend and his daughter. I realized how much better of a player I am because we didn’t have TH-cam in the 80s. Had to listen and find an open E or A then tune to the recording and struggle thru finding the chords slowly and painfully at first then after awile it became easier. Grateful for those skills I mean it’s great to hear a song on the radio then go home and find a lesson on TH-cam but what really impresses people is being able to do it by ear. Now I’m not about to transcribe a steve vai album note for note but I can get it done for most rock songs and I always did my take on solos I never liked hearing note for note recreations in most songs (unless the melody was part of the solo) Peace to all you old cats who learned back when there was not much help. We are better for it
I had another thought... How many drummers were put out of business when the drum machine was developed in the 80s? Seems to me a whole genre of music was created around that one device,
Im impressed by musicians who have fought in the trenches for decades with less than stellar talent but heart. Not so much 13 year olds playing eruption or crazy train
I've seen Chris Buck and Tim Pierce both post mistake filled videos to let you know they just dont hit record and let it rip, its take 15 or whatever that you see. I only post to my wife's FB account and may do 5 takes before I post warts and all some cover that I'm playing too. When I'm not on top of a solo perfectly that's when you hear me stick out. Its live music, not supposed to be perfect!
What are your thoughts on Autotune?? I personally HATE it. I just think its another example of technology taking the human skillset out of the music. I can actually sing and dont need autotune. It makes me mad. Im not opposed to a little backing tracks, but thats about it. You must be able to play live in my opinion. CHEERS to ALL
Call them out man. I had some random non-cats talking trash on behalf of some party bar piano guy, with them saying he could destroy me etc, which was wild delusion on their part. Long story short, I said in colorful terms their contention wasn't the case. It got back to dude, and he said he would do a cutting contest. So I sent him the rules: Player A calls a tune - any on the list in the Wikipedia article "jazz standards", which has over 1k tunes. Player B then has to play that song in the key, style and tempo called by player A. Player A then gets to play the tune. Whoever plays it better gets a point. Now player B gets to do the same. Whoever gets to X points, say 5, wins. You could adjust for rock. What that format does is it 1) tests completely unfakeable musicianship by forcing opponents to transcribe into not just different keys on the spot but also different styles and tempos 2) demonstrates standard repertoire knowledge and 3) where one of the contestants has high technical skill, it showcases that skill, which is different from pure compositional mastery, e.g. a classical musician may have formidable technique but virtually no ability to blow solid lines or field requests. Music isn't a contest, but the above will separate the real deal from a faker in about 30 seconds. And unless the two participants are indeed very close in skill level, it will crown a winner of any two musicians quickly and decisively.
Its sad everything is like this now everyone trying to appear perfect for views and likes. Its not cool just gotta do what we do and ignore this crap sadly gonna get worse
Man I used to think this same way, there absolutely are fakes out there, but the majority of these kids are incredible and I think some of us old school cats are resistant to the pushing of guitar playing into places that some of the very best cant fathom being possible. Im sorry, but most younger peoples reaction to Via and Gilbert is "yawn"
@badbrad I don't wholly disagree. Again, I know there's fakery. I just think the guitar has been legitimately pushed to points I'm not sure our guitar heros thought possible. Eddie doesn't hold the weight he did...partially because people today don't appreciate that it wasn't even so much that it was so mind blowing ly impossible to play, it was innovation, it was style, and it was new. And I propose that's not because of fakery and guitar hero, but it's because of Plini, Tim, and Milan. Ill go a step further that fakery isnt even totally negative. I can name 2 cases antecdotaly in which a video was posted, eventually proven fake, then some kid sits down and figures out how to play the "impossible". Impetus for envelope officially pushed. Just my opinion tho.
I can't listen to any of todays music. It all sounds like it was created in some laboratory. This is exactly why I continue to listen to rock from the 70s and 80s. Will something give? We shall see.
In an age where fakes and poseurs attempt to hang with real musicians... One man, one desire, to expose the rot of musical treachery, that man, is badbrad. (Cue badbrad running and giant explosions behind him)
People are lazy and no soul. They follow each other off the cliff. They have no drive or passion. This is why there is no new generation in hard rock or metal. I still use my marshall stacks and explorers and love being really and dangerous.
Yeah sadly the modern guitar scene has basically become “sport guitar”. It’s not about music at all. It’s like a nuclear arms race but with guitar technique. Who can play the hardest stuff even if it sounds like garbage. And they will rag on “boomer music”(good classic rock) and that style of guitar like it’s beneath them and are just very snobby in general
It's been a sport for many years now. Social media, particularly Instagram helped turn it into a one, TikTok is just another ghetto. People with great technique, or fake technique, and everybody sounds the same. I'm so tired of hearing younger dudes trying to sound like Steve Vai. News flash, Vai is going to be 65 next year, he's been around for a long time. Vai does Vai the best do something else.
They will always be in that chair won't they? because you are a live performer, they got the green screen thats about all, and clicks.short sighted i think.
You simply dont use, and develop the same neurons in the brain when you use a computer to round out the edges of raw guitar playing. Your physical reflexes, and ability to anticipate the groove produced by multiple players are not developed when you get a computer involved.... That used to be called "The X Factor"-- the magic that happens when a couple of players that know their stuff get together..... Computers, being logic-driven arent very good at magic.
Yeah, its nuts, Im no pro but can pull off sabbath tunes now all the way thru and am damn proud of what I can play and when I see these idiots faking it it truely pisses Me off.
I feel ya Brad. Real music has gone underground for a while. Maybe this is the way it is supposed to be for now. Music will come around again from a more mature perspective I believe. I am 55 and this link to a video says a lot...I just stumbled upon this a few minutes ago. Just sharing. I find it inspiring. th-cam.com/video/KmaQQC8TaoA/w-d-xo.html
I have seen allot of this. Mostly by some one very young that is supposed to be a prodigy. But if you know how to really play upscale lead you can see that the individual is miming it all the way. You can tell the slides not taking and also the bends not quite there or in the wrong direction. Which sound very different. But Then::::::You run across some young girl that is ripping thru Clapton's :Hideaway" style and note for note. Right off the Mayall album. For Real !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But most are Fakes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You mean Kim oh I meant Tim, wait Kim, no wait Tim Henson? Not sure if I should call him Kim or Tim, it's a mystery. 😏 He has no feel, I personally can't stand his playing. It would also help if he could play in key when jamming with other people.
Glad this is getting called out.
Thank you

I saw that thing with Vai... heh, yeah it was uncomfortable for them... but those totally fake folks are an oddity to sanity to me...
It’s a strange thing to watch.
I may not be that good of a player after 42 years of playing guitar, but I'll never try and trick someone into thinking I'm better than I actually am.
Man I hear you!
preach brother….
Will do!
I dig your points of view!
I cant STAND the new way of music. If you cant jam some Montrose well- GET OUT😜
I couldn't agree more!
That kid has a future in video editing!
lol
Though I agree with you 100%, I am willing to give a pass to some of the younger players. Especially the kids who came up playing during the pandemic. It’s possible they had whacky parents who kept them isolated and these methods are all the kids know because they’ve never interacted with fellow musicians.
That is tough.
Sad thing is it's not going to stop. Andy Warhol stated fame is fifteen minutes long and thats what most if not all are seeking.
He was right.
I've heard several TH-cam guitar teachers say that they edit like crazy, and have never played live.
Oh man
wow! never played live? well, i guess its like my old band, happy to make fake music in the basement year after year and never play a gig.
Facts aweaome.
I only play when I play.. I'm a nonnlracticinguaician n we hot gold Sunday night.
I ayes slide we banged out some serious southern rock.
Had the right guitarist and the right vocals.
Keep it human .
Yes!
Brad post the link....I wanna see it
Great topic!
Thank you!
It’s all about views now. A lot of people, especially young ones, think their path to riches is just pumping out bullshit content. Basically flat out lying.
It’s a disservice to themselves ultimately
I agree. I tried to teach my kids failure is the path up and don’t get discouraged watching those phonies.
Now I’m not about to transcribe a steve vai album note for note but I can get it done for most rock songs and I always did my take on solos I never liked hearing note for note recreations in most songs (unless the melody was part of the solo)
Peace to all you old cats who learned back when there was not much help. We are better for it
Peace to you brother. We were able to create our own playing styles much easier back then.
I had another thought...
How many drummers were put out of business when the drum machine was developed in the 80s?
Seems to me a whole genre of music was created around that one device,
Man you know it.
Satan is the father of lies. Ignorance may be bliss, but knowledge is power.
I'm pretty sure I've heard things that are impossible to play. Does anyone have some videos to share that are suspect?
Plenty out there
Amen!
🫡
IT is sad that people fall for the foolishness.
It is indeed
TH-cam is full of fake guitar gods and FLAPJACKERS 😂
What is a flapjacker?
@ people that get on TH-cam and noodle, pretending like they know how to do a solo 😂
Im impressed by musicians who have fought in the trenches for decades with less than stellar talent but heart. Not so much 13 year olds playing eruption or crazy train
That's a zinger!
Glad to hear you embrace imperfection.
What are your thoughts on Autotune?? I personally HATE it. I just think its another example of technology taking the human skillset out of the music. I can actually sing and dont need autotune. It makes me mad. Im not opposed to a little backing tracks, but thats about it. You must be able to play live in my opinion.
CHEERS to ALL
I agree!
Bro...I'm just glad that I can still play G, C, and D. Sometimes...if I'm feeling frisky...I might go all out and throw in an F or E minor...
😅
You are a legend!
Corey Feldmens Guitar Solo amazing Brad check it out.
It is one of the greatest of all time!
🤣🤮
Acelarson: friend, I can't tell if you're serious or joking. Which is it and I'll go look for it and check it out. Thanks
at least hes real
@@williamfirstand5057 Friend I'm joking but check it out man, its so funny as he thinks hes shredding
Millie Vanillie...
Yes!👍🏻
That's pretty in depth...most of these fakers wouldn't survive a 12 bar blues.
Im old skool .....I hate digital amps
I can deal with Tube, solid state, digital...as long and the playing is real.
This crap has been going on since at least tha 80’s when I noticed it
I can think of a certain "invasion" that did the speeding up trick.
@@badbrad Don't pick on Victoria Vincent. 😁 Nobody rocks a women's polyester pant suit like that. It's all about the style.
we cant get rid of the lie Brad, we live in the internet world now, since 1995
man
A little off topic Brad been watching a lot of old clips of The Smithereens they were an incredible band!Rip Pat dinizio
They were great.
Its sad everything is like this now everyone trying to appear perfect for views and likes. Its not cool just gotta do what we do and ignore this crap sadly gonna get worse
Man
❤ , Lol 😂 , you got that right, most everything on the web and social media is as fake as a blow up doll lol 😂
😂
There are players and pretenders
Indeed!
It's yawn because people are cheating...
We shall see indeed
Saying "TikTok's fake" anything is being redundant.
perhaps so.
In an age where fakes and poseurs attempt to hang with real musicians...
One man, one desire, to expose the rot of musical treachery, that man, is badbrad.
(Cue badbrad running and giant explosions behind him)
lol
Yeah like the last 4 years
I think so.
People are lazy and no soul. They follow each other off the cliff. They have no drive or passion. This is why there is no new generation in hard rock or metal. I still use my marshall stacks and explorers and love being really and dangerous.
Keep Rockin!
Technology man. Often times I wish I could go back in time and buy old Ted Kaczynski a fine meal because he knew what was up
Crazy indeed
Any different than dubbed live lps?
Yeah and we didn't even know that was the case till many years later.
@badbrad here comes blue lightening from down under! Kids, how do I work this app lol
@badbrad fair enough...it is ott
Corey feldman is a guitar god now
Ha ha I know
Yeah sadly the modern guitar scene has basically become “sport guitar”.
They never get out of the chair.
What Videos are we talking about..??
They are out there...
You're spot on!
Trick-Tok
Yes!
Yeah, its nuts, Im no pro but can pull off sabbath tunes now all the way thru and am damn proud of what I can play and when I see these idiots faking it it truely pisses Me off.
Man you know it!
Digitalis like a blow up doll compared to a real woman.
Oh ya!
Shawn Lane is still unsurpassed - nobody comes remotely close, after all these years, in terms of shredding. He left the world waay too early
So true!
But if you know how to really play upscale lead you can see
that the individual is miming it all the way. You can tell the slides not taking and also the bends not quite there or in the wrong direction. Which sound
very different. But Then::::::You run across some young girl that is ripping thru Clapton's :Hideaway" style and note for note. Right off the Mayall album.
For Real !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But most are Fakes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So true!
He sounds a bit like Taylor Swift.
😂
I really like your channel...are you by chance saved by faith in Christ?
We all can be saved.
My brother in Christ, TikTok (and the Metaverse, and AI) is the new real world!
Real Fakes
Rick beato put that kid on his show, Lol.
You mean Kim oh I meant Tim, wait Kim, no wait Tim Henson? Not sure if I should call him Kim or Tim, it's a mystery. 😏 He has no feel, I personally can't stand his playing. It would also help if he could play in key when jamming with other people.
@@thebadcat69 Lol, I agree, Iommi has more soul with 1 note vs 500 , Lol.
The only guitarist better than Vai, is Jack Butler! Check your facts, bro!
lol
