Is "Guitar Nerd" the right term for someone who lights up the stage with electrifying riffs and earns the crowd’s adoration? In this video, I break down why I despise the label "Guitar Nerd," referencing Pete Thorn's album Guitar Nerd and Joe Bonamassa's famous "Nerdville" homes.
But here's the truth-playing guitar is like Superman donning his cape. When you're rocking out, you're not just a gear-obsessed guy; you're a showstopper, a stage dominator, and maybe even the reason for that twinkle in someone’s eye. From Jimmy Page to Jimi Hendrix, Edward Van Halen to John Mayer, these icons prove guitar isn't about nerdiness-it's about heroism.
Join me as I reclaim what it means to be a guitarist. Let's redefine the narrative and celebrate the art of becoming a Guitar Hero.

Traci Pucci was the girl that did all the hair for those LA rockstars and also for Heart (that was real hair) but she knew hair and styled it for everyone from GNR to y&t to you name it.
I dont like that term either. It makes me think :someone who cant really play, but has a bunch of gear
Uncle Larry referral 🤙🏼

Uncle Larry just told me about your channel, great man, subscribed
Awesome, thank you!
Hey Brad, Tom sent me over. Funny shit bro!! Here's a couple more, Tomo Fujita and Bernth the heavy metal dude.
Great locks! Tom is the man!

Left out KDH… that Irishman has a mane…just stopped in from “Homeskoolin” and subscribed
Thanks Jim!!!
Tom Bukovac sent me, glad he did.
Glad to have you!
It’s true that there are dudes who obsess over gear and can’t play a lick. They do deserve the urban dictionary label guitar nerd. But you’re right, Joe and Pete and Bad Brad are not nerds, It’s perfectly okay to own a lot of gear and obsess over the slightest of differences in tone. That doesn’t make you a nerd, it makes you a perfectionist. Obsessing over gear without also obsessing over/working extensively on your playing ability is lame.
You nailed it Jaye!
Hello Brad! totally agree ! Is a doctor a 'body nerd'? No , it's his domain of expertise, just like for us guitarists, the guitar (& music) is our domain of expertise. And there's something else other instrumentalists don't always get, 'electric guitar' is a device that works with an amp, from the get go. So any detail in you chain changes the sound. It's a blessing and a curse, but we are lucky to able to manipulate our sounds, with effects and pedals, from the start (I wonder why other instrumentalists don't exploit this more...). Does that makes us nerds, no, it's a craft, and yes, we guitarists don't fit well into society labels. As always, it's a complex subject, but somehow, we have a role to play in society, and Bliss is our natural state, and birth right. Rock on, take care & stay Human! Cheers!
Pedro you are an awesome dude!
@@badbrad Thank you Dude !
I (proudly) identify as a Drum Junkie
Hey that's cool!
Now, if only you had a roundtable with Steel Panther, Bad News and Spinal Tap chiming in on this matter. 😆
That would be awesome!
😂😂 just hit the subscribe button thanks to Uncle Larry “discovering” you😂😂
Thank you!
I know from watching some Redd Volkaert videos that he describes himself as a "guitar nerd". I think the term describes someone who is just really into minute details of guitars, amps, and pedals. Tube and speaker specs, pickup wire wrapping, pedal specs, guitar neck details, finish details, etc. There are nerds in everything people take and interest in, sports stats, cars, collectors cards, to name but a few. I think the Urban Dictionary definition is highly generalized and provides an insight that's incorrect and overly simplified and provided by a non musician.
I love Redd's playing...
David St. Hubbins nailed it when he said that it was good that he has his name on his album covers, so he won't be confused with all the other Yngwie J. Malmsteens.
Oh ya!
Eddie was an interesting mad scientist of sound. Had Van Halen not gotten over, I could see him tinkering in a lab at a guitar company, adding innovations to the form and function of the instrument.
Probably so.
They don’t say nerd anymore. Now if you have an attention span, can learn something in detail, or have the ability to focus… they call themselves “autistic “.🙄 it’s like everyone who has mood swings blaming their behavior on “bipolar “. Dude , you’re just an asshole when you get grouchy. Own it 😂. “Autistic “ , has such a spectrum it means nothing. They use it for everything from nerd to the big guy on Of Mice and Men… “pretty girl stay quiet”! 😂”it puts lotion on its skin”… whatever word people use, it’s simply a way for box checking tv watching laziness junkies who never learned anything ,to mock people who focus on something to a highly skilled degree. I’m not a guitar player, but where I come from they’re the coolest cats at the party
Right on brother!
Ahhhh noooooo, bipolar is a real mental illness and many people suffer from it. Autism is real too and many people are on the spectrum. Eddie could have been on the spectrum, who knows, some believe Shawn Lane was on the spectrum too.
Hmm I’ll have nun of that in my class! 😂
lol
Yes! Lol!
If you're my age "nerd" is something of a compliment; you would go on to be the doctor or IT guy, supposedly..
Yeah it was a different time...
No jazzer has better hair than Jimmy Bruno.
Perhaps!
Justin Myers. Good guy, great hair!
Check!
When you read that 'definition' of a guitar nerd I laughed because there are in fact such people on YT. Obsessed with guitars but they rarely play anything. And when they do, it's just so so. NO disrespect mind you, we're all permanent learners of the endless magic fretboard, just a funny observation 😂
It is indeed!!
Trogly? He needs to work on his finesse. His picking is harsh. He’s definitely got the nerd “vibe”.🤣
Check out Ben Eunson. He's great and he has hair.
Awesome!!!
You got an Uncle Larry shoutout on his last vid! Cheers Brad!!
Yes that was awesome!!!
It's a youthful mind thing. If you're stressing about BS all the time you are going to loose your shit (hair). If you are loose and taking things as they come, you learn to improvise and get to keep your hair.
Check
Nerd and a fan of the guitar really are two different things. I think the term could apply when we get techy like types of caps, wire, output of PAFs from year to year between a 58 and a 59 etc. I don't think it's a bad thing to do that. I don't think it's bad to understand the tonality difference between a bolt on neck and a neck thru guitar as well as different wood necks. I have friends that collect guitars and don't play because they have the money and they buy an SRV or a Steinberger model that Eric Bloom plays. I never call them nerds, I just know they have money to spend and it's kind of art that they love. I'll same I'm a nerd when you mentioned you had a pair of Aria pickups in your Super Strat and my mind was trying to figure out if you did that to avoid hum or to avoid radio channels coming into your amp or wireless unit. Lol. I guess I'm part nerd but when I'm on stage I want to put all that knowledge into usefulness.
We all tend to geek out a bit but once we hit the stage….
L'il Wayne. Check.
He is incredible…
Brad, you posted your photo of when you were 13 years old, thank you for sharing 😊
Yes I did thank you!
Tom sent me. New sub.
Welcome to the channel! Thank you!!
I was known in my younger days as a guitar freak ,nerd was considered as uncool 😂
I hear ya there
Your a funny, good playin guy.....................Thanks!!
I appreciate it!
I’m definitely a guitar nerd. I obsess over learning about gear and guitars and watch videos all the time. Like I’m chasing some kind of dragon I tend to keep it to myself though as I’ve noticed most people’s eyes glaze over talking about vintage amps, and the people who are interested usually just want to tell you about their pedalboard and I have to stop talking about the stuff that I like
I know what you mean. It's a tough one!
Looks like Waldo from VH video.
Lol
What nerd, we always got the girls.
Indeed
I’m definitely a guitar nerd. I obsess over learning about gear and guitars and watch videos all the time. It’s nice to be admired for something I’ve worked hard for. When it comes to performance, which I love, I tend to forget about the gear and enjoy the experience. I think interest in the gear is what attracted me to electric guitar, more so than wanting to be on stage. I’m actually frightened on stage, even after decades, but the thrill makes it worth it
Rock on!
Nice Brad! Well said. The guitar "nerds", quickly became guitar heroes, when they got on that stage.
Oh ya!
Chics like the image of a guitar player but not the reality of hours of practice, late nights, being away, ups and downs or not paying attention to THEM 24/7. It’s not all roses.
Very true!
like always, it's about the money that they're really attracted to. 😉
I never obsessed with pedals because in the 70s when I was learning I didn't have any....for me tone became my hands really when playing guitar or bass and my preference is always clean.
Yeah man when we were coming up....there wasn't much in the way of pedals for sure. You can do alot with your hands and the volume knob.
I’ve obsessed with pedals since the 90s. Until I got a good amp. Now I can’t get enough of my amp and can’t be bothered to mess with trying out pedals Funny thing is I’ve gotten a lot better at playing
Shawn Tubbs, Leon Todd and Helmut Bibl also come to mind!🎸🤘🏼🎸
YES!
baxter from casino guitars. hair for days
Yes he does!
