If they wanna prove themselves being real doing this type of stuff just set up the shot so that we can see the daw with timecode rolling in the background recording the audio. This is something that is common in many pedal demos etc but something you NEVER see in these technical/speed focused videos.

@@darioperez181 And that's the way to go if you wanna go into that speed trial game or whatever you wanna call it (to me it's kind of attention seeking silliness, it feels like sports and music isn't sports, but each his own). A clock is a bare minimum for these kind of videos (could be added in post). A screen with the actual waveform being recorded along with readable running timecode is the gold standard. Or you know, keep your head in the frame and let your freak flag fly. If someone would go ahead and fake headbanging long hair I would be seriously impressed. :D

Robert Baker I don’t think doing what you do is fake at all man! Not just because I know you - and you’re a wonderful human being haha! Robert Baker to be honest, it’s kind of the opposite. Obviously if someone is changing camera angles that’s a great chance to pick out the best part of a take. But the sound of the playing is truly you. That’s genuine. It doesn’t set a false hope or standard so you can profit off of people trying to improve their skills.

Man.. I'm a 26 year old guitarist and I can't express what I'm feeling right now watching your video. Every time I came across a fake guitar playing video, I used to think "Damn, can people really not tell what's going on?".. To the point where I would doubt my own hearing. Countless times had I been tempted to go the comment section of those videos and type "This is fake" and risk being called bashful or jealous or whatever. But I now literally understand what it means to have "Faith Restored", because now I know that there are people who notice this stuff, and you, Jack, have taken the first step towards creating awareness around the subject. Thanks for this, and props to all the guitarists you mentioned along Rick Graham, Stephen Taranto etc..

Alain Ibrahim, you can easily tell weather a guitar player is faking or not by their right hand motion. If their right hand is moving way to much, you can say that it's a fake. I mean, yeah guys like Rusty do have a lot of right hand movement, but the fakers have something totally different.

The story was a bit different. Yngwie practiced both in his house and in the shed in his garden. He would record in the shed and bring the tape into the house, practice and record again. As he told it, one of his recorders ran a little faster than the other, causing him to increase his speed just a little more than he was aware. Over time this led to him getting really fast. Or so he said.

What I love most about this video is the balanced perspective. Sure, there's usually some degree of fakery in the studio for the sake of art and expression; lack of transparency, however, is a problem. For instance, Metallica makes no secret of the fact that many of their classic tracks were recorded measure by measure. At the same time, they're not afraid to go out and fuck up a little during a show, or sometimes, even in the studio. Personally, I'll have no issue using some editing tricks to enhance my recordings, but I don't claim to be a virtuoso when I'm not.

As a (really small-scale) TH-cam guitarist, this was one of the reasons I stopped being too intimidated to share my own playing online. Thanks for making this video! It's easy to think you're the only person recognizing all the BS when no one dares to speak up, so it's nice to see in the comments that loads of others can also smell something fishy.
Sadly faking does get people ahead when it comes to getting new opportunities, so I can see why people get tempted. Personally I think it's a form of lying and on top of that doing all that editing is way more work than actually practicing. My guess is some players' logic is, if cheating leads to more subscribers more quickly, that leads to endorsements and other opportunities more quickly. I am sure some players also assume that eventually they will reach the standard of playing they've always been presenting in their videos. So it's basically "fake it till you make it"... But if you don’t actually have the ability to play to that standard live when the time comes, it’s going to lose you a lot of respect. I have seen this happen with some players recently (not going to name names though).
I don't think it's fair but it seems to be the way of the world. I suspect that the organizations handing these fakers opportunities also often know what’s really going on, but again they are looking at sales numbers rather than authenticity. It might just be fellow musicians (and not even all of them) and music aficionados not necessarily in the music business who really care about authenticity.
This was one of the main reasons I had been dreaming of starting my own YT channel. It took me over a year to build up the courage to post my first guitar video, because as I started looking into making a channel I was way too intimidated by videos like that to post anything of myself playing online. But as I watched more of these videos I noticed the fakeness - Not just in speeding up videos, but also players using new camera angles/takes for every part of a song because they didn't practice enough to be able to play the whole thing through in one go, or players saying they've learned something by ear but somehow they're fingering it exactly like the wrong tab I just checked on UG... Yeah, it's sickening! Not only did it piss me off, but by being aware I could adjust my own attitude.
And there may well be a lot of people out there cheating less noticeably; I don't think I'd be able to tell something was sped up 100% of the time, or whether mistakes were pitch-corrected or overdubbed, etc. Even on some of my favorite records I can hear where several takes on a solo got cut and pasted together, and I suspect on some records some tracks may have been sped up slightly from their original recording speed (best case scenario: once the artist has actually learned the full song, they play it even faster live and it sounds better than on the album). Just being aware of some of these things really helped me get over that fear of starting my own channel and actually playing electric guitar with an amp.
But if you flip that argument on its head, the fact that people are cheating means that despite their success, they can't genuinely reach the standard they set for themselves, and in a way that's really sad. Being aware of that can be encouraging when you're building up the confidence to showcase your own playing to others. I can play full songs live and record them without needing to edit them. And although I'm not "the best/fastest/cleanest of all time" I am happy with the level I am at and the fact that I am still improving, learning more, and especially that I can also make some other people happy by playing guitar for them. I can be happy and make others happy without the need to be the fastest or most technical player to have ever walked this planet.
I hope anyone here reading this and looking at this video will get the same encouragement to be openly creative whilst being themselves. And since cheating only makes the industry more superficial and formulaic, I genuinely hope that any cheaters reading this start thinking seriously about how they are shaping the industry. It would be good for people who are faking videos to confess and come up with more authentic ways to contribute to the online music community.
(Sorry for the long post, thanks for reading!)

My father looked at me (noteworthy he's not even a musician.) and told me "What good is it if you play fast but the music sounds like crap? focus on sounding good, then if you want, play fast" I still don't play fast, I play at 160BPM of less. Make the note movement sound good, use the scale degrees to achieve the desired feeling and intensity, and play it for the sake of making something sound wonderful, not for the sake of impressing anyone.

I've been feeling frustrated for a long because of the huge difference between me and any guitarist of the same level but with editing skills and great gear. Since I'm more interested in musical knowledge itself I recognize I take maybe less time than I should taking care of these, but on the other hand most of the people overlap the presentation over the essence of the playing. This is something that has always annoyed me a little. But now I know they actually fake the speed (and it's not just they edit the sound quality) I feel fooled and very angry. I feel that all this frustration and bad feelings about my playing haven't been worth at all, neither necessary. I fear that this is what's going to happen or it's already happening with emerging guitarists like me who aspire somewhere, potentially outstanding people could even give up guitar because of this phenomenon. I have good friends that can actually play like that and they've been playing for about 35 to 40 years. Johnny and Freddy Demarco, Frank Romano , and many many others. I'm a 50 year old bass player and I started playing when I was 12 years old. Saxophone since 4th grade. Piano since I was 5. Ever since pitch and beat quantization came out I figured it was only a matter of time before some hacks figured out how to utilize it for live shows to Fane musicianship. It's a real slap in the face to people that have put in the work for most of their lives.

Every time I play, I get handling noise, the bending occasionally doesn't quite end up where it's supposed to and I'll even skip some notes on the longer runs just to get through it on time.
    I wouldn't change a thing.

  • @abelieversperspective9595
    @abelieversperspective9595 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Agreed - absolutely. I'm a bassist/guitarist with some skill with synthesizers and keyboards, and this issue is something that concerns me mainly because I am also a composer utilizing computer aided audio to cover any instrumentation for arrangements I create that I don't play. But this is not to say that I don't know how to compose for many different instruments. It isn't really creative, in my opinion, to just call up a beat from a preset and then use a tempo map to arrange it in a clever way, then groove up to make yet another hackneyed pop tune with a duration of 2" - 3: 30" that is so perfectly quantized and pitch corrected that it sounds as though I'm listening to a machine. It takes great care - time - effort ... to make any kind of computer aided imagery convincing, and even then it's never completely transparent. This is the reason I've decided to go back to recording guitars and basses again, which is something I haven't done since 2010. I've avoided these instruments in my compositions for lack of decent sample representations, at least until I recently licensed a very decent library. But even so, there is no substitute for a real performance, with all it's charms that are born of the very flaws that the Photoshop generation mistakenly, or malignantly tries to eliminate. For it is the grace of the listener or the viewer that makes the artistic experience real. But when the audience is intolerant, then the arts are overthrown by totalitarianism. This is still a very cold war indeed. Be vigilant. Only the truth keeps us free.

I’m glad you brought up the root of this problem which is the whole influencer culture thing. I stopped using Instagram about a year ago because I got so sick of seeing the exact same type of cheesy “aesthetic” shit over and over again. And then there were the people who would try and game the algorithm any way they could to gain followers. Like commenting a random string of emojis (🔥🔥🔥) on any semi popular video to try and generate interaction or follow your account and then unfollow you within less than a day just to try and bait you into following them back.
It got so fucking predictable and annoying and I couldn’t stand it anymore. Haven’t looked back since.

they could not have backing tracks, etc. at some point? Seems to me that they will be found out and looking for a rope in the near future, the ultimate publicity.

Unfortunately social media (and modern DAW tech) has created a load of bedroom guitarists that are falling in to the same narcissistic traps as other areas of social media. I know I'm getting old and creaky, but I think we need to get more guitarists playing in live bands again so they can feel that amazing sense of gratification you can only ever get from real audience feedback. It beats Likes any day of the week! Even if more players are just getting together with other musicians and creating music in a room and experiencing that creative ebb-and-flow and have an end result to be proud of, it's got to be more rewarding than this fake virtuoso garbage, surely? In the meantime, keep calling em out, and making people aware.

I applaud your video. I've been practicing guitar for over 40 years and I'm still terrible. But trying your best to save the future of the guitar is very noble and I'm glad you're bringing this to the attention of real guitar players. Traveling with your band when you are a one man band, you'll never see a drummer hitchhiking down the highway with a set of drums. The guitar was made for walking with it strapped to your back. One other easy instrument to travel with is the Harmonica. Keep up the fight my friend.
