    • @brouwjon
      @brouwjon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    • @skycastrum5803
      @skycastrum5803 4 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      It was actually the one view he has that sort of annoys me. (And this is as someone who is autistic, in case my opinion would somehow be invalidated if I were not personally affected by the topic.) I greatly respect where Sanderson’s views come from and see him as an amazing individual.
      However, I believe there are a good too many people trying to force a model on stories as having to reflect real world social issues, having to promote certain views, and needing to portray things in specific ways. This is too constraining. Providing the characters of a story “could” exist in their world, that the story is internally consistent, that story portrays an aspect of truth. All people have their own place in the world. They each possess certain characteristics and experiences making up their view of reality. And that view is true, in that it is an accurate representation of reality from a specific vantage point.
      There are reasons to conform stories to what is... PC (for lack of a better word). For one, you may avoid people getting annoyed at you. More importantly, if you want to create a specific type of character (especially with mental conditions you lift straight from reality), it helps tons to find out what is a bad representation. If you are trying to create a specific message in your book for the purpose of impacting reality, then in that case it’s more important than ever to understand the reality where your message applies. But fantasy isn’t always an allegory. Sometimes fantasy racism has no real life equivalent. One thing massively different in fantasy is how wildly different sentient species can be. Here, we’re all human. Think of how limiting it would be if all fantasy races had to be tied to humanity so closely.
      Probably not worth writing this all in a 5 month old TH-cam comment thread, but helps me organize my thoughts. Brandon Sanderson is amazing and I love his books. I also do find his stance on diversity issues mature. But I still think it’s flawed.

    • @animalia5554
      @animalia5554 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Sky Castrum It’s weird because I am on the Autism spectrum as well. I am where Asperger’s was. And I am having the opposite problem. At one point in my life I started to care so much about people’s feelings (which is a good thing) that I crossed the line into worrying about what they think about me. (Something I didn’t use to do and more of a bad thing, I feel) Honestly, I believe it’s a fine line between the two. We each need to find our own balance and it may be different for each person. Who knows for you finding the right balance may be about leaning in the other direction. In the end we all have to live with each other.

      Yeah I definitely feel that. Having that sense of knowing there’s something wrong with you but not being able to pinpoint exactly what it is or explain it with words really connects me to Brandon and his work. Just knowing that there are others out there who feel the same as I do helps me feel normal as a person and is honestly the most relieving thing I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. Which is why Kaladin is forever going to be my favorite character haha.

      Yeah and it's not a problem necessarily, but it's become one for me recently. I had to make a big decision that completely depended on my emotions and what I wanted. These sort of situations can be really hard. There is pros and cons to becoming more connected to one's emotions but I think one can choose to learn.

      It really is comforting to know other people feel this way and its not just something wrong with me. I often find myself instinctively faking stronger emotion just so I seem more normal to people. It's something that I developed over my life of always feeling "other."
      And I feel like others don't understand why I have such a need to read and to play games and to watch things. It just... fulfills something for me that I can't get anywhere else and it makes me feel happy when nothing else can.

First, did the artist successfully do what they were trying to do, and second, do I like what they ended up doing. I will obviously pick what I read based on the second, but if I were ever to give advice or feedback or criticism to artists, the only constructive way would be to base it on the first.

    As a person diagnosed with aspergers, a form of Autism, your opinions about mental differences really resonated with me. I would consider my aspergers very mild, but it is still a facet of me and it doesn't define me. I too believe that everyone are different in the way you described, and that we all have some "strain" of the mental differences, some stronger than others, I just think that we have given some a name and category. As you said, it is a spectrum. Love authors who are so.... open minded and modern, for lack of better words, thank you!

    • @kaedeyutani9197
      @kaedeyutani9197 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I know you have no reason to take anything I say seriously. I'm just a random person on TH-cam.
      But seriously. When people say "it doesn't define me"... It really sounds like you're denying your own qualities.
      Embrace yourself and how your mind work. It does to a certain extent define who you are, you wouldn't be you without it, its something to be cultivated and mastered not survived and sidestepped - something to live happily, despite of...
      You're not a "wrong" person, you're not a damaged person.
      I might just see alot between the lines, and be all kinds of wrong and you're shaking your head at me.
      But I live in a place where a lot of people have some kind of diagnosis(be it autism/aspergers or personality disorders/schizophrenia etc etc), and my biggest gripe is how everyone think they somehow have to fight their own fundamental mental framework - and I mostly mean those who're just built differently in the mental, not the psychosis(drug induced) people, thats a change that happened, so I get that, its not who they were, its who they became --> so deal with it, be who you are rather than try to become the one you were, its in the past, deal with the present.
      No. Its how you work, it has its strengths and weaknesses which are just more defined than the average Joe - its not something that happened to you(aspergers), its who you are.
      Love yourself. Stop victimizing yourself, take control, profit from your strengths rather than lament your weaknesses.
      I'm sorry if I come off "preachy", but it's close to my heart :) I wish you the best, and I hope you see this comes from a positive place :) (even if it's misguided xD)
      Addition: I know I'm generalizing ... A LOT... And I'm not saying that every person isn't different and needs their own approach to whatever it is that affects them. I'd love a dialogue though, I don't want to come off as some "know it all", since I don't. But I'm dealing with my own situation, and has had to deal with my own mental vulnerability(thats a conscious distinction I make. I don't feel we're Ill per say, but we have a vulnerability thats atypical to the common experience the average person has to deal with. It's not always something that needs to be treated, as much as it's something we have to deal with, and accept and work with, rather than think some medicine can "cure" us of ourselves. Medication for me, in my case multiple years of depression, medication was a crutch I used to stop kill myself when it was at its worst, but I stopped using medication, since it only helped me deal with the symptoms, it didn't handle the "Cause". A good metaphor I like to use is that, if your leg is broken, you can take painkillers and walk on it, sure. It doesn't make the leg heal though - I'm not downplaying medication, it saved my life - but it's a part in the process its not the end of the journey.)

      To elaborate, I meant that I've worked hard to get to where I am today, and I'm still struggling with some parts of it. I have accepted that I have a diagnosis that I need to live with, but I don't like putting labels on stuff because everyone and their experiences are so different!
      I see how passionate you are about this and I love how supportive you are! It did take a long time for me to come to accept my diagnosis and figure out how I wanted to view it.

    "I don't tend to feel really strong emotions... One of the only things that knocks me out of that is a really good story, well told." Same, B-Sand, same.
    I could listen to Brandon Sanderson talk about writing all day every day.

    Such a genuinely good person. I remember reading through his works the first time and wondering what type of person it takes to weave and craft these fantastical worlds in which I spend a good deal of my time dreaming. It's heartening to know he's the type of person I might have been friends with under the right circumstances. I don't know why that matters to me, but it does.

    This is, legitimately, probably the best interview I've seen with Brandon. This is good stuff. I've been watching you since your sub count was in the 10-20k range and it's been really great to see how you've grown your channel. And especially how you've changed problems you've spotted in your channel and the way you handle things in your videos. Good stuff man.

      Hmm i never noticed issues. Is there anything daniel used to do bad that he's doing better now? just curious as i never notice these things!

    • @erickalfaro8389
      @erickalfaro8389 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @troglodyto he was just new at a point and was pretty niche. When I started watching him he was starting the wheel of time summaries because I wanted a quick recap of the books. And followed him since. He has tried things that don't get much views and then tried things that did. And refined it and is pretty successful now. I mean, it's brandon sanderson. I have a manceush on the guy ever since he finished the books of wheel of time.

      The time investment is more than I generally like to give to a TH-cam video, but this one is well worth it. I'm glad I started it, because there was no stopping me from watching once I started.
      Daniel, great interview. I expected nothing less.
      Brandon, thanks for playing along and giving your time and self to your fans. My copy of Startsight has long since been ordered and I can't wait to rub shoulders with other fans and to see you on Tuesday.

    I almost never comment on youtube, but I’ve been watching you since that Way Of Kings review you did a long time ago. It’s amazing how much you’ve grown as both a person and a youtuber. You don’t know me, I don’t know you, but I’m still somehow so proud of you, Daniel. You did it! You got that Brandon interview!

    Brandon. What an absolute legend. I genuinely get emotional listening to him talk about writing characters struggling with mental illness because his books definitely helped me getting over my own depression two years ago. I got a Bridge Four tattoo on my arm to remember what he did for me, and for rekindling my love for the fantasy genre in general. Forever grateful to him, truly. So excited for Starsight!
