Kelsier got his scars from repeatedly reaching into small holes lined with sharp crystals. The scars should probably run the length of his arms, not crosswise.
Amazing to see the big man himself, who got me into writing, come onto a channel that I have been watching since I discovered TH-cam, which also got me into art. What a treat of a video. Amazing artwork dude! Thanks for bringing Sanderson the questions that truly matter xD
I absolutely love your videos Jazza. I’ve been watching them on and off for years. I know it’s been difficult to always keep up with the TH-cam“meta,” but videos like this are why I keep coming back. I’ve never even read a book by Brandon Sanderson, but watching your love for character creation and your openness to feedback is amazing. You’re always growing as a person but still the same Jazza in the end. Also, that Bilbo comment was pure chaotic evil 😈
While I appreciate the slight tweaks to Kelsier's Arm scars, I've always pictured them to be lengthwise along his arms, as the pits of Hathsin require the prisoners to shove their arms into holes lined with sharp rocks that cut deep into the arms as they reach in to harvest the Atium.
I believe that to be more accurate. Imagine a multitude of white veins running down the arm, or a pattern as if cracking a window at a single point, almost but not quite to the point of shattering it. White, thin, long, numerous and cris-crossing.
If I remember correctly it explicitly states that the scars run the length of his forearms and hands, so your vision is correct. (If I remember correctly that is.)
I always thought of it like that too! The idea of reaching into the sharp rocky holes felt like a very similar concept to mechanics reaching into spaces and betting slices by zipties or lockwire.
Ahhhh was so pleased this appeared in my feed! Unbelievably cool that you managed to get Brandon Sanderson on to chat to you and give thoughts on your art. Makes me excited about the latest book release this month!
Elijah Wood's Bilbo is pretty iconic, but I'd say his portrayal of Tom Sawyer as well as his TV show where he dressed as a Cat are way more iconic. Oh, also him as Harry Potter. I couldn't imagine anyone else playing him.
I've been drawing Cosmere fanart for a good few years now. You even featured one of my pieces in the Shallan section. Getting to have that back and fourth with Brandon would be a dream come true. Fantastic work and great depictions!
The reason why people might portray Shallan as older than 18 is because a year on Roshar is 500 days long, so an 18 year old on Roshar would be about 23ish to us.
Um acktchually 🤓, a day in Roshar is 20 hours long, so even though their years are 500 days, a Rosharan year is clores to 1.1 Earth years, meaning that an 18 year old would be closer to 20
@@Kradolpher Also Roshar is more Invested than normal, which makes people healthier and age slower, so someone who is 18 in Roshar years would be about 20 in Earth years but still look about 18 in Earth years.
how do you people even remember that? like i remember the 500 days but THE INVESTED PART? AND 20 HOURS A DAY? you guys nerds. oh and i have read most books as well (all that i could find)...
@@Ms.Bubblegum-zz1dd Mostly because of the recent math from the Sunlit Man book from the Secret Projects. Each person, even if they aren't empowered/a mage themselves, has a certain amount of BEU (breath equivalent units) Investiture in their very soul. This varies between 1 and 3 BEU per planet, and Roshar is at the latter extreme.
Great video! Brandon Sanderson is my favorite author so this was really fun to watch! Not too long ago i finished listening to every single Sanderson book (cosmere and non-cosmere) and now I cant wait for Wind and Truth!
Yes! Please get Joe Abercrombie for the first law series 😍 although I'm already getting sad knowing that Tolkien cannot do this anymore. He probably would have roasted any depiction 😅
Shallan, especially at the start of the series, would've found having her safehand concealed only by a glove scandalous, too. In order to suit _Shallan_ 's (😉) sense of propriety, she should be depicted with a sleeve instead of a glove. You basically depicted her with the Vorin equivalent of lingerie, LoL. This was delightful, though. I enjoy the collaboration between an author and an artist.
The lingerie comparison is well-found, but doesn't hold up entirely, seeing as lower class women usually only wear gloves instead of a full sleeve. I guess it's more similar to a tight tank top? Fine for many people, but a bit revealing for people who are used to covering up more.
@@tulekahju Yeah, fair. Shallan's perspective is why I tried finding an IRL example that would make some people think "that's practically in my underwear", while still being something other people wouldn't bat an eye about. But I'm not sure how well I succeeded.
Agreed. I’d expect Veil to wear a glove and think nothing of it, but not Shallan. She’s more of a sleeve gal, especially at the stage of the books Jazza drew her from.
I bought Brandon Sanderson's audio books for Mistborn on audible. Absolutely loved it, those first three books were right up my alley, the books after that take place further in the future, different but still really good. The narrator that did the narration for the books is one of my favorites as well (Michael Kramer). Awesome that you got Brandon on here. Your corrections to Vin's cloak is how I imagined the cloak to look. Update to Kel looked good. I haven't read the starlight archive yet, still need to get around to that. Good work.
This was AWESOME. Particularly the back and forth with the author, giving us a glimpse into how an author and an illustrator would work together, so so cool. And I absolutely agree with the fact that it's so interesting and generous of him to give such precise notes about your designs, it feels like he's taking this conversation seriously. It would be wonderful to see this kind of content again. Thank you to you both!
I only think the beard and eyes were slightly off. And, if nothing else, the eyes were meant to represent him getting his stormlight and not him as "light eyes"
Awesome jazza. I luv Sanderson , some of the only complete fantasy worlds I have images of in my head that no movie studio has warped with their interpretation and casting. Soo, perfect IP for this type of video (for me). I feel like once an actor portrays a character, especially if they do it well, whatever image you had in your head from reading the books just dissappears.
This is so timely for me. I just stumbled into the stormlight archives looking for some light reading.. Didn't realize what I was getting into, now I'm into the 3rd book and loving it. Can't wait till the movie industry gets ahold of it
I just clicked because I am curious and I only really know the stormlight archives because of a metal song about that series by one of my favourite bands. I was so excited to learn more about Kaladin in this video because what I know comes from the song and a reaction video by a stormlight archives fan. Kind of unreal to be watching this after having sung along to that song with the band this sunday. The song is Violent Shadows by Blind Guardian if you are curious, BG often writes songs about fantasy books.
I love Stormlight!! Best series I've read. And I just finished reading the first Mistborn book, so this video was timed perfectly for me! Great job on the renditions of the characters!
Vin: The drawing is amazing. You managed to make something like an actual mistcloak work (as opposed to a mistcoat), and I enjoy the obsidian daggers. If I had to nitpick, I'd point out that her hair is significantly shorter for most of book 1, which is what this seems to be based on. Kelsier: A bunch of other commenters have mentioned that the scars should be more numerous, longer, and more vertical. I won't harp on that. I'd note that descriptions of Kelsier's psychopathic behavior don't begin or end at "he smiles too much." The man is fully capable of justifying any of his murders to himself. I enjoy that he doesn't look TOO young in this, he's ~40. I also like what you did with his smirk. Kaladin: The dude is, like, 19 in Rosharan years, and ~21 in ours. He absolutely can't grow a great beard, though I do like this take on his face and expression. Like most on Roshar, though, he is significantly, significantly darker-skinned than how you drew him. As Sanderson also mentioned, Kaladin is ~7ft tall, and significantly leaner than the drawing. Shallan: Honestly, this one was basically perfect. Unlike most depictions I've seen of this character, she actually looks as young as she is in book 1. Were I to mention anything, it would, of course, be her exposed safehand. The exposed hand is essentially equivalent to being topless, a glove is maybe equivalent to extremely skimpy clothing, and the sleeve covering the safehand (which is standard) is a basic feature of the Havah's design.
OMG! Finally had time to watch this video! I love it!!!!! So so cool to have my favorite TH-cam artist AND my favorite author in one video! Sanderson agreeing to be in this video is just awesome. The drawings are AMAZING, Jazza!!! I love that you did Steelheart, as that's the second Sanderson book I ever read, and seems to be a completely undervalued series. Thank you, also, for getting that Mr. Sanderson question answered. I wondered about that. Lol😂
Brandon says scar cross cross over each other, Jazza makes none of the acars touch. I love that you got the author in. First Jazza video i have watched in a while.
I love this!! Not only are you clearly passionate about the books, he also has such a clear vision about his characters! I really like how he expresses what changes he thinks would suit best!
It was extremely validating to be like, "Jazza, you got the most cloak wrong" only to have Sanderson agree, then be thinking, "Kelsier's scars aren't that big, there's lots of little ones" only to have Sanderson agree, then be thinking, "Why are you drawing Kal so stocky?" only to have Sanderson agree, then to be like, "Sanderson is so going to call you out on her hand not being covered," only to have that happen immediately, and finally get to Steelheart and think, "I don't have any concerns about this one," only to have Sanderson once again agree. It's probably because I've read the books more recently (I started just over a year ago and have made my way through almost the entire Cosmere), but I'm glad to know that my imaginings of the characters seems to be pretty close to the authors intent.
I never thought Kal or Shallan were Asian looking. Kinda neat to hear. I definitely didn’t imagine either with that ethnic comparison. I’m Korean and thought both were white. Shallan had me imagining a fire haired Scottish woman (without accent of course). Knowing that now, I don’t think his corrections made either look Asian though. Still amazing art though!
@@aznp33nRocketSzeth is described as being a little weird looking, with big eyes. In reality, he looks european, but from the characters' point of view, that means he looks off.
@henryward5457 that makes a lot of sense actually! In a world of mostly asians, a European would definitely seem odd! I've been imagining the whole world completely off!

Depends! Japanese eyes tilt down at outer corners, Chinese, slightly upward, South Korean, bit down but more often straight, North Korean, Cycle-Moon, down. Now these novels carry mixtures of races, so...
Rarely comment, love the Bilbo comment trap. But really, this was such a fun use of your influence and what a cool experience for fans and new fans of Sanderson’s to see him react to your hard work! ❤❤
Kaladin is a bit off just due to the fact that he’s 19 in the first book. You drew him as something of a 30 year old who’s been hitting the gym relentlessly for the past 10 years. He also would’ve been malnourished as a slave and even as a bridgeman. And a more scraggly since it’s described that way a fair few times in the books. Again, most men at age 19 (especially of Asian decent) can’t grow much of a beard.
Brandon Sanderson is my favorite author of all time, I remember I went to one of his book signings when I was a kid and got to ask him a question during his Q&A, and he is almost exactly the same in person as he is in interviews and other appearances, a very kind and driven man with a passion for his work and awe-inspiring creative talent. I was lucky enough to actually have a copy of Steelheart signed which I still have to this day, and it's a treasure I hold near and dear to my heart. Great work on the art Jazza, absolutely nailed it :D
Such a fun video! Love seeing the drawings come together, and hearing Brandon's thoughts about them are a delight! The details that as he says "would be hard because they don't have language to describe it" is also really neat to hear. Thanks for crediting Alysha at the end - I honestly was thinking it looked like her painting style for final renders, and was concerned that she wasn't getting mentioned.
"Mr Sanderson" was lovely. As a fantasy author I could only wish Jazza would draw my characters lol I'd feel like I'd made it for sure. Love to see you draw Jazza and Alisha's completions of the linework and colour are always awesome! Great interpretations!
I love seeing the process you go through in making art. In the world where so many people are just typing into an ai engine and calling themselves artists, it’s so reference to see your actual process.
Would love this to become a series in itself! Brent Weeks' written work (The Black Prism / The Painted Man / The Way of Shadows) would look epic if brought to life visually!
FAVORITE AUTHOR! Love that you did this collaboration with Brandon! One thing that I really appreciate is that he has described Shallan as looking “Japanese-Irish” as a result of her ethnic background. I appreciate that almost none of the characters are stereotypically “white” like a lot of popular fantasy series. Unique ethnic races created for this series is a compelling part of the dynamics. 😊

Being a huge Sanderson fan, this makes me soooo happy! Incredible work!! 🩷
I named my dog TenSoon, and I can confirm he gives the best hugs.
Great artwork as always Jazza.
They say never meet your heroes, but i feel Brandon Sanderson is the exception to that! He seems so down to earth and friendly!
He will be less so the day I get my chance to ask him Wayne's safe word (headcanon is it's his own name)
I’m in awe at how good your artwork looks before the digital coloring.
Ahhhh was so pleased this appeared in my feed! Unbelievably cool that you managed to get Brandon Sanderson on to chat to you and give thoughts on your art. Makes me excited about the latest book release this month!
Seeing the Author's feedback to your illustration was so lovely! Surely a thing alot of Artists dream of!
Elijah Wood's Bilbo is pretty iconic, but I'd say his portrayal of Tom Sawyer as well as his TV show where he dressed as a Cat are way more iconic. Oh, also him as Harry Potter. I couldn't imagine anyone else playing him.
His range is incredible, I truly think he saved the Twilight films with his Edward!

I've been drawing Cosmere fanart for a good few years now. You even featured one of my pieces in the Shallan section. Getting to have that back and fourth with Brandon would be a dream come true. Fantastic work and great depictions!
Which one??????
Great work! I love Mr. Sanderson's reactions so much! Must be so amazing to have him immediately recognize the character! Well done.
Never expected to see this. I had no idea Jazza was a fan of Sanderson. The Cosmere is amazing. I just started Wind and Truth tonight.
I think Hammond would give great hugs, honestly. Rock would too. I would also love a hug from Wayne.
you gotta be careful with wayne tho, he likes to do some impromptu bartering at any chance he gets...
For an author to react to a character drawing and say that it's pretty spot on must be such an accomplished feeling

@@raizin4908 I was stating it from the perspective of _Shallan_ . So I still stand by what I said, LoL.
@@raizin4908I think that equivalent would be a lady who typically wears skirts walking about in yoga pants.

Good work.

I was so happy you did Steelheart. People usually focus on Mistborn or Stormlight, but Steelheart and the Reckoners is such a great series too.

@emperordraygon YES. This video 10/10 sparked a deep need in me to read them again, because those are my favourite Brandon Sanderson books.
This was AWESOME. Particularly the back and forth with the author, giving us a glimpse into how an author and an illustrator would work together, so so cool. It would be wonderful to see this kind of content again. Thank you to you both!

"...gives a lot more push and pull."
I see what you did there
Me too I was there like👀
I didn't even catch that 😮
Haha, yes!
You are such a talented artist. You actually get me excited about drawing and make me want to get back into art.

This was super cool! I love the fact that Sanderson interacts so much with his fans and other creators!
Jazza playing that 'get the engagement' game by saying Elijah is Bilbo 😂 Well played sir!

A tip for the Asian eyes… The top eyelids extend below the lower eyelid in the inner corner of the eyes, and the outer corners of the eyes are high.❤
Depends! Japanese eyes tilt down at outer corners, Chinese, slightly upward, South Korean, bit down but more often straight, North Korean, Cycle-Moon, down. Now these novels carry mixtures of races, so...
Yes, his animation style for Asian does not look Asian to me.

My thoughts exactly. How come this middle aged kaukasian is someones Kaladin?
That difficulty is actually referenced by Rock when he keeps mocking his fellow bridgemen "you call that a beard!!"
