    I’ve repaired and sold hundreds of ds lites on ebay but I remember the first time I attempted to repair it took me over a month to complete the repair but then I got so skilled in regarding that I was able to fully change screen and reshell a console with broken hinge in 10 minutes. It was so much fun.

    a DS Lite shell replamacement is the most complicated mod I've ever done. Mine had the horrendous pink shell, which had also yellowed to the point it looked like an infected wound, and to make matters worse, the bottom was totally ruined by attaching a security sticker on it. Because I was strongly cautioned the leave the screen bezels in place (I was told it would be unlikely I could change them out without breaking the screen, I also ended up using some other pink components together with my dark blue replacement shell, which turned out to be a cool look (pink bezel, buttons and GBA slot cover)

    • @TheRetroFuture
      @TheRetroFuture  6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      They are definitely very difficult! I think the pink looks smart! Each to their own. My GBA SP is pink! Maybe I'm weird...

    • @Agamemnon2
      @Agamemnon2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I think the yellowing is what pushed me over the edge, the color had become fairly unpleasant. Plus the security sticker glue was not coming off even with alcohol. The two-tone look worked really well, however, and it let me keep the slightly higher-quality Nintendo buttons and D-pad, so actually playing on the unit still has the same feel.

    Oh man, this brings back memories. Replacing the top screen was my first exposure to DIY repair and it was a doozy! Routing the cables thru the small hinge was so nerve-wracking, but the feeling of success was insane. The ribbon cable was way more tough to tear than I expected, but those trigger buttons were something else, though. It felt so good to get done, and this is a great video. brings me back :)

  • @ChrisMX9
    @ChrisMX9 6 ปีที่แล้ว +50

    Also the hinge on the 3ds XL is normal to be floppy like that ... Mine is like that too

    • @TheRetroFuture

    • @GanjsmostPrime
      @GanjsmostPrime 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The Retro Future hey while you have it apart can you go over the common fault of ribbon cable shorting? It's due to the weight and nature of the wiring in the top screen and hinge.

      Actually, because of the screen weight, it should wooble a lot more than a DSi, a regular 3DS/New 3DS, or even the New 2DS XL.
      It should be floppy, but a little wooble is regular because or the weight.

    Quick tip! For weaving the antenna cable under the DS cart slot use a needle with a bit of thread and knot it near the connector of the cable, let the needle fall through the gaps under the cart slot and slowly pull the cable through, easy peasy!

    Holy moly, I'm basically going to do the same thing when the DS lites ship. I basically bought 2 "for parts" DS lites off of eBay. One of them works perfectly, just that the GBA slot doesn't accept the games. The other one's screens don't work, so from the nonworking GBA DS lite, I'll be getting the shell and the screens out of that, and putting them into the other DS Lite. Also, your videos inspired me to do this, so thank you very much

    I've changed a few GB, GBC and GBA shells, but the first time I tried to change the shell on a DS Lite, I broke one of the clips that secures a cable and just left the replacement shell in a box for a few years.

    Does anyone have a full step-by-step guide for re-shelling a DS Lite? This was great, but I feel a lot of the little details were missing... I managed to do most of it on my own, and got it to work fine, but I think I forgot the clear plastic bit for the power lights on the top right of the bottom part of the shell... And I'm still hoping I didn't forget anything else, haha... (P.S. the springs for the L and R buttons were indeed a pain, mostly because I figure out that there are 2 different springs in the kit I got, one being the mirror image of the other, and it's easiest if you figure out which one is which from the very beginning). Props for the video, though!!!

    Since you made this video, the Lite has gone up in value due to the retro gaming and nostalgia boom. The popularity of turning Lites with broken top screens into “Gameboy Macros” has also driven up the price of broken ones. I’m changing the shell on my sister’s old pink Lite. (Still debating that, kinda a nice memory from our childhoods). But I only got one for $15USD because it was untested! Funny hearing you say doing shells might not be worth it two years ago because fully working units were able to be had for £15!!

    I'm sat watching DS Lite videos until my DS Lite games come in next Monday LOL I'm so excited! I haven't touched my DS for almost 10 years and I'm so excited to play it again!

    My DS lite has been my childhood and I've been thinking of refurbishing it, specifically the hinge and volume because it's been acting up the most. I'm a complete beginner and wondering if this is a good video to use as a "tutorial" or should I look further? My system is modded and I'm fairly attatched to it so I don't want to buy a new one.

    Really interesting, it looks really complex to get everything done right too, I was thinking about maybe making some changes in mine but after seeing this I should just stay with my DS as it is already lol

    I remember when I first got a red ds lite the interior casing cracked so I sent it in for repairs and was told they were all out of red casings so I was given a black and red combo which looked amazing and I still have it 😀

      @fortnut adventures yee No, it isn't a pattern. The back of the top part is red, while the rest is black.

    At 3:36 you did not show how to fit the 4 track ribbon. Also to run back the black wire under the card slot is almost imposible without desoldering at least 2 legs attached to the board.

    Thank you so much for your videos! Please show a detailed video on replacing the 3ds hinge. All three of mine I bought brand new came with awful hinges that are loose. I have the Zelda one too! 😃

    idk why you gave us the info for your recording equipment but we're here for the Nintendo DS so Nintendo DS parts links woulda made more sense since we wasn't looking up how to professionally shoot a video...anyway thanks for lining the outdo song it takes me back to Pokemon times lol

    Elliot I've got a new level of respect for you. The ds lite is very challenging to work on. I just bought a job lot of about 30 in need of repairs. They are very very tedious. I'd rather solder a mcwill kit into a game gear. Just wow.

    I just order a DS Lite and SoulSilver. I should get it in a few days. I wanted to play Pokemon again and since I don't really like the newer Gens I went for SoulSilver. I will be getting GBA Emerald or Ruby and Fire Red or Leaf Green.

    My silver ds lite's top screen goes white when it is bent far enough back. I wanted to try and fix it, but I don't have a tri-wing screwdriver :l

    • @kiko12000
      @kiko12000 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's most likely the ribbon cable for the top screen. And you can easily find tri wing screwdrivers on amazon for cheap.

    I did EXACTLY this a few years back and accidentally made a hairline fracture in the soldering for the charging circuit, and now it no longer charges. I've since attempted repairs but it was unhelpful and did nothing but make a mess. Still have it though :)

    Wow that was cool. Would you/have you done videos where you explain what your doing/the parts your removing/fiddling with on the DS. I'm not really familiar with the components and it would be cool to have that stuff explained.

    Does anyone know if the the plastic screen covers are interchangeable between the top and bottom screens? I'm looking to customize my shell a bit but the eBay store I found does not have the top screen cover in the trim color I want. So I guess my question would be, can a plastic screen cover for the bottom screens be used for the top screen? (Not screen protectors but the piece of plastic that gets adhered to the system.)

    So i was all set to put one of these sweet zelda cases on my DSL to do the same thing and match my 3DS, then i saw how insane the inside is. Seriously, soldering onto ribbon cables and messing with trigger springs and ribbons so small you need tweezers. Naw dude, i'll leave this blood pressure spike to you.
