When Mariner first gets in the steamrunner class she calls it an “old ship” even though that ship is front the 2370’s and the show is set in the 2380’s. It’s a relatively young ship class compared to most in the fleet, specifically compared to the Excelsior and Miranda class.
I guess the _Sabrerunner_ class preceded the _Steamrunner_ by some time? Maybe it was the testbed for the design concept, which they later scaled up into the full-sized _Steamrunner._
23rd century, _Constitution_ refit: "A chimpanzee and two trainees can run her." Late 24th century: _Mariner and __-Wilson-__ Genesis Device fly a_ Steamrunner _class ship without a crew_
You have always been able to pilot a ship without a crew, there is literally only 1 helmsman after all. You just cannot use all of the systems other than flying the ship really.
Starfleet has a trend of making a ship operable with as little crew as possible. Of course, more crew is better, but starfleet has made a priority that in cases of emergency, a ship should be operable, capable of flying and defending itself, by as few as one person. The automation only gets better and more efficient, with the Prometheus Class being the latest development (in canon) that we've seen, with only 2 EMHs able to order it into an attack pattern.
Mariner's ship isn't a Steamrunner, it's a newly established Saberunner. Basically a scaled down Steamrunner for a much smaller crew compliment. Just a tidbit since it's coming up a lot.
I mean Star Treck ships are no stranger to being piloted by a single person, its much more difficult and you aren't even operating at a tenth you're full capabilities without a crew but we've seen it happen before. Heck in Voyager Seven did it for a month.
You can run a starship with one person just fine as long as everything is at 100%. When things start breaking or going out of alignment then you’re screwed.
The background design here was fantastic. The bridge looks like it could be another redress of the set they kept reusing at the Enterprise D battle bridge and various guest ship bridges throughout TNG, DS9, and VOY. Steamrunners and Sabers (since the Passaro is a hybrid design that's a Steamrunner in design but Saber in size) were part of Starfleet's counter-Borg efforts. It's not a Sovereign-class but I think it can take a few hits.
