I was sitting in a small town in Montana, and I noticed an older gentleman. I remember thinking.... man that old guy is in excellent shape for an older guy. I’ve been a personal trainer for most of my adult life and being over 50 I recognized the peculiarity of seeing a man in such good shape and being older. He was sitting on a bench right across from me and my dog. He looked familiar. He must have been shocked when I yelled “you are Mark Martin “. What followed was a great and friendly conversation about racing and life. I feel so blessed to have met him. He’s a real racer.
Mark Martin has always been a class act. He's also (I believe) the greatest driver of the "modern era" to never win a cup series championship! I remember some talking head asking him why he didn't do a burnout after winning some race. His answer..."It's disrespectful to the equipment" still rings true to me. This is a man that came from nothing, built his own cars and had to start over at least once because of his passion for racing. When he says it's disrespectful, I think he's also talking about the people in the shop that work so hard all week to build and prepare these cars for the track. He also mentored MANY young drivers. If more drivers these days had his values, NASCAR would be better all around.
Mike Brown I believe Dale Sr rarely did burnouts either. They respected the cars, the motors, the chassis too much to tear them up because back then you probably had maybe 4-5 good back-up cars, not 15-20.
im curious as to the reasoning of that. Back in his day did they reuse axles, transmissions, and stuff like that? I understand the chassis and bodys, but the mechanical stuff that actually get torn up during a burn out, is it reused back then?
The issue is, and was, back then, if you could afford it. It's not a matter of respect, it's a matter of if you needed that car to win another race. Why tear it up if you're going to have to run it again? Across most premier motorsports, they limit a lot of expendature, be it gross funds, or mechanical units, to keep teams without millions of dollars under their belts still in the race. In modernity, if a guy does a burnout, that engine has reached the end of its life, burning it down means nothing, it's retired. If you see a race winner not burn out, then that engine still has a job to do - ain't gonna blow those valve springs for a show.
@@masmcg the cars back then had bodies designed for tracks. A speedway car, intermediate, road course, and short track were so different and difficult to replicate over and over so no two cars were the same. So ripping a fender off to do a burnout could effect how it drove the next time it raced if the fender wasn't perfect.
It did not take me long to become a Mark Martin fan, when he retired I never found anyone to fill that void. Thanks for bringing him on the show, brought back some great memories.
Interesting you say that, my Mom feels the exact same way. After Mark retired Kurt Busch became her pick but it just never stuck and she stopped watching until I got back into it about two or three years ago.
I fees some have already said it, but that is exactly how I felt about him, too. I really started getting into NASCAR in the 80s and would watch every race I could. Drivers like Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson just never appealed to me. Mark Martin was one of the last "old school" drivers and, after Davey Allison died, Mark Martin quickly became my favorite. He always raced clean and I don't remember him EVER spinning someone out to gain a position or even a win. If he couldn't get around someone without wrecking them, he just didn't go around.
When people used to ask who was my favorite driver always told them it was right there in black & white. The black #60 winn dixie on saturday and the white #6 valvoline on sunday.Sure do miss watching Mark run.
Mark was my favorite driver from day one, he is why I started watching NASCAR weekly passionately, I got to c him race in Daytona in the winn dixie #60 and the #6 valvoline, means buddy were from Florida, one year can't remember he got to go to talladega, well the race got rained out even Monday got rained out, so they came home, the race was being run the next weekend, the people my buddy was hanging out with all weekend one of them couldn't come back the next week, so he gave my buddy his ticket,he gave it to me, we went the next week and mark martin wins the fastest race so far at talladega, I don't think there was a wreck in the race one awesome turn of events and got to c my man win what a time
Mark Martin was one of the most genuine/greatest person nascar has ever had. I've met him 1 time and got his autograph but I would love to sit down with him and have a beer or two and listen to his stories.
Mark Martin is one of the best drivers ever ❗ He's humble, a teacher, a mentor. You won't find anybody that would talk bad about him anywhere ❗He is one of my favorite driver's. I have never met him but he's only bucket list ‼️ Keep Rockin Mr. Consistency ‼️✌️🤟🤘🏳️🏁
Like myself, Mark comes from a family of trucking. You are so aware of the people around you that looks like they do it the ‘right’ way. Someone like Mark spoke up to help the young.
Mark nails it at the end. Having JR doing everything he is doing for NASCAR is extremely important for the sport. Hearing the history of the sport through the drivers crew Chiefs n etc eyes is so cool. I find myself cracking up hearing the crazy stories of the behind the scenes of a particular race. And to hear where the drivers came from n how much they went through to get to the big leagues is awesome. Personally the podcasts that JR is doing is only making me a bigger fan!
This is why Mark is one of my most favorite drivers. It's just because of , who he is . I was sad when he quit . I was hoping he'd be like Morgan . Lol
He didnt quit, he retired, multiple times actually. The man gave us 30 years of his life. Like the undertaker in wrestling, the man has earned his right to relax. I understand missing him, please dont disrespect a great man saying he "quit".
Mark is such an incredible person. In these episodes, he's even a historian. Get him in the studio for more chats, man, he's brilliant. Mark in the Jr garage 2020.
I picked Dale SR in 1979 to be my driver at the start of the season. And he was my driver ever since. I am 52 years old now and I really just loved to watch Dale run against Mark Martin and D,W and Rusty, and I can go on for a while naming all the greats back in the late 70's and the 80's into the 90's. I really do miss them days and I have seen them in person at the tracks like Michigan since I only live about 2 hours away. Dale Earnhardt and Dale JR made racing what it is today and with out them, I don't think it would have reached the level that it is today. Keep up the great work you are doing Dale JR. You can make it even better from here.
Mark used to piss me off all the time as a kid because of his skill. I genuinely respect him and I could listen to his stories all day now. What a great man.
Roll tide roll MARK MARTIN THNK U DALE JR, FOR MAKING THIS A SPECIAL DAY HES MY OLD SCHOOL FAVORITE😉💝! I ve been too the dega Trac with some bama folks 2009! My parents used too go too okla, city fairgrounds stock car racing! Stay healthy n prosperous 2020! This yr my 1st,time too go too daytona!good luck Earnhardt family ur upcoming arrival! Isla rosey sure has long piano fingers oh yeah she gonna haves sum talent
Mark was the last driver I respected and hoped would do well every week in NASCAR. Dude was legit, had all the skills and knowledge, earned every step, paid his dues and then some - but the crowning achievement for him in my opinion was how he raced. He'd compete as hard as anyone but would not run you "dirty" - no cheap shots out of this guy. Integrity, character and respect in one package, the way it should be. A true role model for others. When he retired, I pretty much stopped following the sport closely. All the respect in the world for you, Mr. Martin. Much appreciation for how you've done it! -Ed on the Ridge
Marks a hell of a guy, hes been my favorite since I was a little kid and the older I get the more I try to be like him. I am going to have to make the trip down to see his museum one of these days. Marks podcasts are great i always listen to em when working on my racecar.
Was at Darlington in 09 was sitting in section a in the Pearson grandstand on the top row screaming my head off. It was one of the most entertaining day at Darlington since the 93 race. You will alway be the man mark, miss you every time I’m there.
Oh boy... Teresa Earnhardt better not sue this video or comment... lol But in all honesty, it’s really interesting to listen about this... Mark has so many amazing stories
I met Mark at Iowa Speedway back in 2007 when he was running a Daytona Prototype car in a road race. He agreed to do the race at the behest of Rusty Wallace (who designed Iowa Speedway) if Rusty would fly him in from Chicago where the Cup series was racing that weekend. Right before the race started, a private jet with a script RW in the tail landed at the airport adjacent to the track and there was Mark making his way into the track a few minutes later. Got to meet him at the team trailer (we had passes through the car sponsor, Preformed Line Products, thanks to my wife) got a couple die casts autographed and watch him run a DP car. Pretty damn cool for an lifelong fan of his.
I post this every time I see Mark Martin but as a kid in small town Tennessee, in or around 1990, his #6 folgers car was parked outside the grocery store and his crew member gave me a pair of earplugs in a neat folgers case and I was instantly a Mark Martin fan and most importantly a Nascar fan. Man I'm glad it was his car out there that day because without knowing a thing, I picked a winner and great man to follow!
I love mark he so cool and respectful person like jr is and thank you sr for your time that was cool and miss mark on the track . Jr thank you for having mark Martin on your channel he always will be my favorite driver . Like you were mying . God bless ya all .
You can see Dale get emotional when Mark says he just wanted to win one more time. I bet Dale got a little emotional because he probably has that daydream all the time
Met Mark at New Smyrna Speedway. He signed my Viagra jacket. There were so many people there but he stayed til the end to meet everyone. Also met him again at Orlando Speedworld when his son Matt was running a truck. Mark was right in there just like everyone else. Super super class act. Have his picture hanging in my office and it will be there forever!!!!
It's nice to know that Mark did get to benefit from a top shelf racing team like Hendrick, at least for a couple of years. He learned all his chops in the cheap shops, but was very generous with his knowledge & praise.
First met Mark at Nazareth raceway, driving a Ford Dealers car in the Bush series, I believe for Bill Davis... Always humble but serious. Great man and racer!
Another guy I miss seeing down on pit road dressed in his fire suit just before a cup race on Sundays. What real gift that Nascar was given in the form of a legendary driver.
I have enjoyed your pod cast on here, and learning more about the NASCAR world and driver's. I have become a fan of the series because of these podcast and the previous drivers, so I now watch as much historical stuff on the previous drivers. I enjoy your own business and your feelings about your life and family and feel about the sport But also sharing your triumphs and losses, especially when you lost your mother, I have been their myself in 03. I would just like to say thank you for your channel and your efforts. Drive on to all of you for the future. Stay safe and be careful out there and no talking to the zombies lol.
I love you so much Mark... I havent been the same man since u left :(Ive been in limbo. Sure Im wearing an 88 cap but only cause its Valvoline. I got a Lowes jacket but Ive never loved Jimmy like u. And I cant remember Alex Bowmans name half the time. 6 forever. Im just glad a young basketball player guitar player got to idolize you for 20 years and grow into the best mechanic I know because of you and 500 valvoline hats.
These only make me like Mark Martin even more. Idk how NASCAR didn’t have him doing interviews all over the place They didn’t want The Truth Mark Martin is The Truth
Love this talk with Mark and hearing him talk about his mentorship with Kenseth and Logano. I seem to recall that Joey and Marks son (Matt) raced trucks at New Smyrna Beach and both won there several times. Don’t know what became of Matt but he didn’t follow Mark into big time NASCAR .
So I wonder if logano would be such a trucker jackwagon icehouse if the grace of Mark Martin could’ve been over him as mentor but, hey, it didn’t happen and Joey is a total wiener jerk
I know you boys have a late model deal going, how about more episodes on short track racing? Awesome hearing Mark Martin talk about set ups in the grass roots!!!!
There's really only one competitor that SR raced against that I didn't just respect but always liked, Mark Martin. If SR couldn't win I wanted that #6 to win, even though he drove that damn Ford. Damn that was when racing was a blast to watch week in week out!!
Mark Martin is who got me watching Nascar. I would live and die with him in the car every week. Dam shame he never won a cup championship. I still believe he got cheated out of his championship the year he finished (I believe 24 points) 2nd to Earnhardt for a penalty. Five time runner-up to the championship
Congratulations on your ownership in a racing series...good luck...its time for a change...super speedway are way to dangerous for drivers...but if you want to be in cup you have to run them...and take a chance of get hurt or get killed...short track racing is more exciting and more fun to watch...and go see live...and it has alot less resk of getting hurt for the race car driver's....good luck with your new adventure...
Need drivers like this in the sport today, real men, respectful, and tough, not these cold fish no personality cry baby soyboys, it's bad enough NASCAR has destroyed everything that made it what it once was without having all these lame so called drivers brought in as well,

Have always loved mark. Mr. Nascar.

Thanks for the great story, I really don't get that excited about many celebrities, but I would love to meet Mark Martin because he is the real deal..
Mark Martin can be summed up in one word: Class
Two words FIRST CLASS
point out a driver who hates him. He won 40 races clean he could have been a multi camp and he deserved it
Humble, accountable, when needed, a true legend
I don' think there's anybody in the sport that I have more respect for than Mark Martin.

That is exactly how I feel and is when I pretty much lost interest in NASCAR

I loved watching Mark. He was my driver. I loved the talent but loved the humility and the respect he showed everyone
It gutted me to never see him win the Daytona 500 and to come so close to a cup, but man it was a fun time cheering for him. A man of class.

Racecar driver's come and go but Mark Martin will never be forgotten he got me watching NASCAR thank you Mark for all the memories
I got to meet him at a Spartan mower meeting. He was terribly busy but still took the time to take a photo and talk for a minute what a great guy.
Imagine if Mark had went to Hendrick in 1989 instead of 2009. He'd probably be like a 5 time champion.
I recall him so far back (showing my age) that he had Strohs beer and Folgers coffee as sponsors
58bobw Those were not even his first sponsors, as he started in like 1982-1983 and failed on his own then.
He was a ford guy at the time......wouldnt have been possible
@@mtrice5934 That was only because he drove for Roush. Mark never cared about manufacturers.

I'm a Martin fan and this video is gold. Thank you Jr for having Mark on your podcast and getting him to talk about so much of his career.
Mark is such an incredible person. In these episodes, he's even a historian. Get him in the studio for more chats, man, he's brilliant. Mark in the Jr garage 2020.
I love you having a few of the old drivers on with you doing a interview with them. Everyone is so relaxed being there with you
Mark: I just wanna win one more race
2009: wins 5 races and 2nd in points like an absolute chad
Yeah, and he should have won 10.
Growing up a Martin fan it was really nice to see. I never saw a champion win or a Daytona 500, but it was great to see him win so much.
Mark will always be my favorite racing driver of all time. 💪🏼😎🖖🏼

Mark Martin! My favorite cup driver! Wish he would of done that SRX SERIES
Was at Darlington in 09 was sitting in section a in the Pearson grandstand on the top row screaming my head off. It was one of the most entertaining day at Darlington since the 93 race. You will alway be the man mark, miss you every time I’m there.

I met Mark at Iowa Speedway back in 2007 when he was running a Daytona Prototype car in a road race.

Mark Martin is the man! Was totally gutted when he lost the 500 to Harvick

Mark needs to be involved at some level in NASCAR still. Dude is a value asset
These only make me like Mark Martin even more.

They didn’t want The Truth
Mark Martin is The Truth
I have been a Mark Martin for many, many years. Way back with the Folgers car. I’m as disappointed as Mark is that he did not win the championship.

What I remember is that Matt Martin just didn't want to race any more.
So I wonder if logano would be such a trucker jackwagon icehouse if the grace of Mark Martin could’ve been over him as mentor but, hey, it didn’t happen and Joey is a total wiener jerk
Mark Martin.. what a champ!
Mark is my favorite
Hands down MM was best driver to never win a championship MM was a very smart good driver he didn't tear his car up alot
Mark was always one of my favorite drivers. Its a damn shame he never won a championship. If it wasn't for Gordon he would of had at least one.
Or that ridiculous penalty in 1990.
Living Legend
Awesome Mark!
greatest to never win a Championship? Man I wish he won Daytona. so so close.
That was a heart breaker, damit harvick
When I was a nascar fan MM was who I pulled for!
Love Mark
Mark Martin is CEO of racing. It doesn't exist, but he's the CEO of racing.
Need drivers like this in the sport today, real men, respectful, and tough, not these cold fish no personality cry baby soyboys, it's bad enough NASCAR has destroyed everything that made it what it once was without having all these lame so called drivers brought in as well,
Truth
Mark!
Mark Martin knows, you've found your calling.
If you ain’t first you’re last.
They are two champions that just didn't win the championship.
respect is correct
The only Ford driver that I ever wanted to see win.
Awesome video!!!
