I met Mike as an 8th grader in the infield of IRP in 1996 back when they ran the truck race on Thursdays. Skinner was subbing for Dale that Saturday in the Brickyard and let me talk his ear off about it.
used to love watching him drive the wheels off the Trucks & Busch series. Too bad he didnt quite have the success in the Cup cars. Still remember him getting his first(unofficial) Cup win when they used to do that one off exhibition race in Japan, after the reg season ended. Did he ever win an actual Cup series race after that? can't quite remember, I'll have to look that up
In regards to Al Unser, Jr...I will agree with Mike and Dale...he is a great guy. I met him back in the late 80s in Michigan while he was there for the CART race. I recognized him when he pulled up to the dairy bar (ice cream stand) on US-12 and got out of the car. He was with a few other people. I went up and introduced myself, shook hands with him (big guy) and chatted for a few. He was so cool. He was racing for Shierson (Adrian, MI) at the time and was my favorite Indy driver. Awesome experience. I was also attending the race that weekend.
I got quick story. I met Al Unser Jr. at Pocono for the IndyCar race. I shook his hand. Told him he was one favorite drivers. Got a picture, but should've got his autograph.
They should’ve stuck to the communist jokes before introducing him and made him silent during the laps. Him hating everything and playing a stereotypical American while driving is what killed being able to like him
Let me tell you about Mike Skinner. Louisville motor speedway had a race many years ago with Cale Yarborough, Mike Skinner and I think Buddy Baker. They rented three of the late model race cars and Mike Skinner ended up with the blue number 54 late model. Mike got the slowest of all of the cars. The blue 54 was always at the tail end of the race. Mike took the car out to test and brought it back in and had them make several changes. Mike was like a lightning bolt on the green flag. After just two laps they called a “phantom caution “to bring them all back together. Mike was half a lap a head after only two laps. Of course Mike won the race. What was so surprising to me was how short Mike was lol when he got out of the car I was standing right there in the pits by the car. I was taller than him lol he is still one of my favorite all-time racecar drivers.
this was a great interview I'm soo glad Mike named you as his influence for wanting to do the right thing you , like your late dad, have saved drivers in your own way. thanks again
Good interview Jr. Mike Skinner made the right move for sure and you know you did too and no doubt it was a tough one for you. You made Skinner's semi-retirement easier for him and it will for others. Your influence will save lives and make the later years better for others.
I met Mike at the truck race in St. Louis (Madison, IL) a few years ago. He was so down to earth and hung around to talk to everyone at the fence. I hope he enjoys his retirement.
I'll always remember Mike Skinner as moustache wearing teammate of Earnhardt Sr, driving that #31 Lowes Monte Carlo. Loved Skinner, especially at Daytona/ Talladega.
Dale Earnhardt had so many horrific crashes during his career yet never let off the gas pedal. His son had a few crashes and he suffered from concussions where he decided it was best for him to retire. That was a good decision for him and his family. You just couldn't stop ole IRONHEAD!
Dale Sr. had some really bad years in the latter half of the 90s (by his standards anyhow) because of his unwillingness to take a week or two off. Broke his neck at Michigan in 1995, had the injuries at Talladega in 1996, had a blackout spell at Darlington in 1997, suffered numerous injuries in the spring of 1998 (between burns and bruises from 3 hard crashes), and then in 1999 he broke his neck again in the wreck at Atlanta. So when I hear someone calling Denny Hamlin a wuss for taking himself out to allow himself to heal and/or not feeling well, all I can think is that Denny is protecting his investment (i.e: himself) in a way that can ensure success down the road.
Cool segment , I met Ol Skinner at a truck race in Mansfield a while back , there was rain delay and I was working as a tire catcher for a race team and Mike Skinner and Schrader and Johnny Benson were standing around all Talking and I went up and asked for autographs and they all did and we were all talking for a while , Skinner and the other two were just normal dudes talking with me and my buddy like they knew us for years
Man i didn't realize how great a guy Mike Skinner is. Hes a very smart and funny dude! This was an awesome show! I was a Sr fan and I fell in line with his "i don't need a teammate" attitude! I owe you an apology Mike! I made a decision to not like you because of someone else's reasoning! Sorry man! I truly apologize!

I will always have an appreciation for Mike Skinner. Dale never wanted a teammate so they never really worked with each other. But with them being on the same page going into 2001 makes it even more tragic. Being asked by Mr Childress to check on Dale and be the one to inform his boss how bad it looked must've been terrible. But even with that he was still competitive in trucks and was trusted to be good enough to evaluate young teams and run their equipment to get them up to par. I think Skinner was better than his stats show. Dude just had some terrible luck.
A lot of the drivers I root for are from the older generation & often times I wonder if the drivers I root for are going through stuff like that without anyone knowing... not even themselves. It's scary to think about honestly, especially when hear about anything that to you is considered strange or extreme for them.
My favorite driver back in the day is/was/always-will-be Dale Jarrett. That man suffered injuries left and right, hell he broke his kneecap at Pocono in 1996 in a fashion that should have derailed his title bid. As he got older, and I point to 2001, he suffered some hard wrecks and got injuries that I believe it took him a while to overcome. Ricky Rudd is the exact same in that sense, got injured a bit and never took a week off to let himself heal.
My brother Rick worked for Mick for a couple of years and accually paid for him and a friend to go to Darlington, in the infield no less, one cool dude !

The wreck that got JR was a test. He knocked the wall down at Vegas Brad Keselowski was outside doing an event. He said it sounded like a detonation inside the racetrack.
Met Mike Skinner and got his autograph at Save-a-lot in Jackson, Ohio when I was probably 10. I think he had one of his trucks there and pretty sure Angie was selling a book. Believe she’s from Jackson area
I am happy the Stigma of concussions and CTE is coming to an end. I am also happy Dale Jr is going to donate his brain to CTE research after the family of NFL HALL of Fame and Super Bowl XI winning Quarterback Kenny Stabler found out Kenny suffered from CTE.

I think the majority of drivers retire with some mental injuries. I think guys are retiring earlier cuz they have more resources now and they know what's wrong with them. These cars now are so much safer than they used to be but they're still race cars at the end of the day
This dude went out there in the first 2 Truck seasons and won 16 of 44 races. When teams & drivers were still learning. A seriously skilled man.
If things had worked out, Mike Skinner could have won 5 or six races in the #31 car from 1999 to 2000.
