A lot of my friends and family buy watches based on looks and (fleeting) popularity of brand, complaining about them a year or two down the line breaking (with repair costs often times reaching the original price of the piece). So I try to find watches of the same design from real (mid-range) watchmakers like Tissot, Certina, Seiko, etc. They make for very nice birthday / christmas presents that last way longer (even the Quartz ones) : )

As much as I want to hate on fashion watches, it was a crappy Fossil quartz watch that initially got me into the hobby, so I’m grateful for it!

I do have some of these made by Vincero. My experience with these are a mixed bag, as while they do look nice. Yeah, they do pale in comparison to watches like my Lunar Pilot and ProMaster (and maybe the Sturling tourbillon), but I do take them out every now and then. It’s often a surprise when fashion brands push the envelope into more serious horological territory (The Fifth’s Swiss catalog is a good example).
I do think they have a place as they end up being a gateway to the watch world.

these cheap fashion watches could be, in time, a large contributor to luxury watch growth as people learn more about them. So maybe its just a cheaper entry point into the watches that didnt exist before, that will in the years to come, lead to better, more interesting purchasing decisions by the consumer.

Completely agree with you Sam. For example not many people learn to drive in a Porsche or Ferrari. They usually learn in a budget car which is their gateway to the car scene.
As with any collectible, the hobbyist needs to start somewhere. The people buying these watches will either decide that the watch does the job for them or is a gateway to a passion for watches which will lead them to other established brands. You can’t run before you can walk so there’s no point buying the best running shoes to walk in unless you already collect trainers right?
Tastes develop through experience and the larger the market is in a ‘fashion’ sense, the more people are introduced to it and can choose to opt for aesthetics, build quality, value retention or whatever they are drawn to.

@@Thomas_Burnett great analogy...maybe the difference is, people dont drive a Chevy Chevette and pretend its a Rolls :-)
