@@ThePalaeontologist Sidious used the corruption and resentment that the outer rim worlds had against the core worlds to his advantage and basically orchestrated the Clone Wars which led to the Jedi Purge and the Empire. Ironically it was the defense of Naboo defeating the Trade Federation that inspired the Outer Rim worlds to break away and form the Separatist alliance with Dooku at the head.
They’re kinda similar when the rebels started out they weren’t united and had lots of malicious people in it. Though that was until political members funded and sorted the rebellion out . The separatists on the other hand were being manipulated by the Sith since the beginning. The banking clans and the trade federation were ruled by Darth plagias after he killed his relatives to get inheritance. Then palpatine comes into play and controls the republic and the separatist .

That's why General Leia Organa was against the senate for the demilitarisation of the New Republic, but being a new democracy and all, the majority was tired of the war and only wanted a small fleet for protection, not warfare. Leia was running for the office of chancellorship so she can have more authority to keep the fleet, until her political opponent released the proof that she was the daughter of Darth Vader, and at that point she lost any credibility to the rest of the galaxy and had to back out of the election. At that point is when Leia runs away from the new republic to train with Luke and to build her own militarised faction, the Resistance. While legally her resistance is unrecognised by the new republic senate. There are some senators who agree with her and secretly funder her operations all to the name of protecting the new democracy from any imperial remnants warlords and against whatever that comes next.

Exactly what I was thinking too, like it’s weird that these people are being basically dehumanized to the point that they’re basically just numbers and workers to the NR.
The new republic was built upon a defeated Empire and a crumbling Republic. It never had any chance to succeed. They would’ve never had the resources to do anything. The Empire worked because they neglected killed or enslaved people to reach their goals. Without using those methods how are you going to get anything to work. That’s why I assumed they were using so many droids, because after the death and destruction of the war they had a manpower shortage.
Exactly. Notice how the rich people in star wars on courescant don't change? Whether its in andor or in the prequels or in mando, they're all disaffected.
I appreciate The Mandalorian for providing more info into how the New Republic came short of greatness but it hurts seeing what Luke, Leia, and Han fight for get blown away by a knock-off Empire.
The New Republic could start off as incompetent as they reform and gradually improve, so it doesn't have to end with the events show in the Disney spinoff movies.

I was thinking the same thing, they're pushing the 'feel good' montra so much. You don't want to share your real feelings out of fear that when your thoughts don't match theirs, they'll do something horrifying like mindflay you until you're basically lobotomized
I found some of the dialog in this episode really creepy. The citizens in the opera house, Dr. Pershing's boss and the medical tech all came across as really weird and creepy!
That's why I'd probably prefer to live in some far away Outer Rim planet where that anarchist feeling of wanting to be left alone and free enterprise still thrive if I lived in the canon New Republic era.
Honestly, the citizens in the Opera House seemed like some of the most realistic people to me, in the sense that I saw it relating to the real world. Sycophants who are so curled up in the wealth that the troubles of the world around them pass them by unnoticed, and they'll happily suckle at the teat of whoever is in power just so they can keep living within the excess and hedonism they exist in. That corruption is what caused the Clone Wars in the first place, it makes sense that it never actually went away. Even under the Empire, the lives of the elite on Coruscant's upper levels didn't really change, as evidenced in Andor. Just utterly disconnected and not really caring. It absolutely made sense to me, especially since that dynamic exists in the real world, too.
The fact that they didn’t even modify it or install any safety settings probably speaks to an attitude of “we only put the ones who deserve it in there, and even if the dial gets turned up one too many notches, they’re imps. Who cares?” Which makes sense, there’s probably a lot of vindictive people in the galaxy who are looking for their turn to hurt the empire the way they were hurt, but now the empires gone. So all they can do is send people who aren’t meeting the NR standard to the mind flayer.

Well the First Order only gained power from privateers and land owners. You see who gives them money and power in TJL and even probably the pirates. Its all people who want more money, freer markets etc.
I felt that when Kane so obviously taking his research at the end implies the republic troopers there were in on it. And maybe all working for Gideon or Thrawn
Frankly, the sequels had to make the NR implasibly-stupid just to explain why or how the implausibly-stupid bad guys could set up a rehash of A New Hope when the world needed to *move on.*

@@samanfang5139 not necessarily, real world history shows that’s civilizations that were/are the result of violent revolutions tend to learn the same values as their previous oppressors through a need for revenge as well as fear of them returning. Eerily enough this is much closer to how a realistic New Republic should have looked in legends.

That was what I was referring to. The governing body in Hosnian Prime never had a chance to react once Starkiller's laser blasts came shooting in at incredible speed. In Legends, at least the governing body would have some chance to escape and establish a sort of government in exile.
I believe she handing it over to the Republic security personnel off screen. Reason I said that is because both of them surrounded by the securities but they let her pass through carrying those equipment. Beside, I doubt those things important to her. They are just bait to trap Pershing.

@@ladygrey7425 I don't really see Thrawn as being involved in the Empire in that way at this point; the only reason he was aligned with them was to build an ally for the Chiss in their own fight. The fragments of the Empire that remain now aren't a reliable ally, it wouldn't make sense for him to remain loyal to them. I don't doubt he's coming back, but I don't particularly think it's to help make a Palpatine clone. I could be wrong, obviously, but idk, it just doesn't make sense to me.
The entire time watching the episode I was constantly thinking, "alright, this is nice. Now when is the other shoe gonna drop?". And lo and behold, The Mandalorian did not fail to deliver.

The east tells you, that the Ukraine is evil, even though many families are completely justified in defending their home. Western media on the other hand, tells you that Russia is evil, while they are ignoring the fact that the Eastern Ukraine is entirely justified in their wish to be independent. Even the news about Nazis in the Ukraine aren't completely untrue. Yes, the Nazis in the Ukraine are a minority, but the government in Kiev is at least willing to tolerate them as long as they fight against Russia. But neither western nor eastern media talk about the perspective of the other side and their own mistakes. The media on both sides seem to be unable or unwilling to paint the full picture with catastrophic results. It's only a matter of time until this war will expand and drag the whole world into it. Both sides will fight to the death until there is nothing left to fight for. And then, far too late, they'll realize that the true war was never fought against their respective enemies. It was fought against themselves. And in the end everyone died for nothing, or worse, for a destroyed world.
I felt really bad for Dr Pershing, I know he's a imperial but even in season 1 and 2 he really felt like, just a guy trying to do his job he didn't feel mean malicious or evil, he also prevented Grogu from dying in season 1. He really felt like just some guy that was trying really hard to be better person and use his research to be a better person and I was actually hoping he would get a better chance at life, and use his cloning resarch to do good and help people he seemed very sincere in wating to make the galaxy better! Not to mention his upset about brand new imperial equipment being destroyed when it could be repurposed or even donated to outerim worlds that could use it felt very justified the empire was bad yes, but to just destroy every bit of research and technology is so wasteful and stupid. also I'm sorry but those new republic uniforms are just hideous i do not like the open collar and part down the middle.

This New Republic was SO SCARY. It was like every horror movie wrapped up together. I was like "Why are the former imperials so jolly????". i was feeling VERY off about Elia Kane from the very start. AMAZING episode, but so scary. literally the Andor episode of Bix being tortured was less scary
For some reason, to me true totalitarianism showing it's true colors of harsh discipline and sense of duty being instilled in individuals is less scary than a Crap Saccharine World where feelings are put above all else and hence everything feels fake and plastic.
The 'mindflayer' kind of make sense. The Empire was known for prisons, labor camps and executions. So the 'mindflayer', repurposed by the New Republic, seemed a better alternative, because there's no prison, labor camp, or executions involved. Of course, this brings up a new type of horror.
Is it just me, or did this episode have Thrawn written all over it? First Bo's home is destroyed. Now, look at what was sent for it. A small bomber squadron, and dozens of tie interceptors. This isn't likely another moff. Moff Gideon was clearly a fairly well known and prestigious moff, and even he only enjoyed in Imperial Light Cruiser and a small compliment of tie fighters. Yet now there's an Imperial remnant capable of sending dozens of starfighters just to bomb Bo's home and to try and ensure she's dead? And we have an Imperial coms officer who is pretty clearly still imp wiping the mind of a potential imp liability and a possible NR tool? I am betting here and now Thrawn is making his moves. He heard of Bo being a bit of an annoyance and sought to ensure she was eliminated before she could rally Mandalorians and be more of an issue (They were key in his end before as well, and leading the mandalorians when he was defeated was Bo herself.) However, he couldn't account for the fact that she was already off world. In fact I would wager he had monitored the planet and noted that she never left, and rarely had visitors. She was alone. And stationary for some time. It's just the time of attack happens to be right when she needs to save some ass. I could be wrong, but they teased Thrawn last season. They show the NR isn't great, a clear Imperial spy, talks of Gideons fate is left in the air, the destruction of Bo's home (Either a punishment or attempted execution) and the Imperial forces we saw on display. Even if Bo pissed off several different warlords, I doubt they would work together to send such a force. Especially of superior tie models in the interceptor, rather than regular tie fighters. As said I could be 100% wrong. But I am getting so many vibes that Thrawn is making his moves and preparing for a takeover.
Oh most defiantly. This can't just be another Moff at work, I mean Gideon was probably the highest or one of the highest ranked Imperials left and even he didn't have this many resources, clearly what with the sheer amount of Fighters that attacked Bo's home and what the Imperial this episode was up to to get rid of the doctor something else is up here. Even if some corruption allowed Gideon to get off without execution, the NR would still at least keep him somewhere where he can't give orders to surviving Imperials, clearly, someone more powerful has taken over his operation or was the one really in charge of it the entire time, and that is Thrawn. I wasn't expecting him to make big moves until Ahsoka season 1, but it seems Ahsoka and others hunting him, as well as Gideon's defeat and his remnant destroyed along with some of the cloning research, has forced Thrawn to act early now striking to get rid of key threats like the doctor and Bo, and probably the Mandalorians in general.
Also worth noting that when Bo Katan seized the Light Cruiser is S2 her question to the Imperial commander was "where is Thrawn" - not "Where is Gideon", but looking for Thrawn in particular. Now if Thrawn has returned and knows someone is looking for him... Also Thrawn related is that the two people that Elia Kane mainuplates to end up alone with Pershing in the Mind Flayer is a Twilek and a Mon Calamari - species that Thrawn liked to manipulate through his understanding of their psychological limitations as he understood it from their art.
I feel like that was intentional, just to show how little has actually changed for the people that live there. The motifs and the furniture change, but everything seems to be in the same place otherwise. The fall of the empire was a reskin rather than an upgrade.
The social worker Droid he talked to just felt like thenew republic didn't care enough about the Amnesty program enough to have a living being monitor the participants
I wouldn't say I am creeped out but rather glad about this. I say that because it reinterprets the New Republic (and, to an extent, the Rebel Alliance.) as not just this pure force of good. The people that were fawning over the Doctor? They are supposed to be the wealthy elite of the Galaxy, if not Coruscant, at a bare minimum. As the Wealthy elite, they never faced the myriad of problems that the Galaxy faced, hell I am pretty sure most of them were probably talking about how great the Empire was when it ruled. For them, it doesn't matter who is in charge; they get to keep their lovely privileges and wealth. And as to why the security was nonexistent? It's probably because, in reality, it is not a reform and de-radicalizing program but a "work integration" program, where the Imperials that agree to join the New Republic get their citizenship by performing some labor for the New Republic, and naturally, the work they do is something menial (but necessary for the New Republic to function.)
I'm glad they showed this, despite the Rebel Alliance and the New Republic being shown as these goodie two shoes type of people they were in reality nearly as bad as the Empire in some cases

What's the difference? - Crosshair In all seriousness, the New Republic is treating their workers like cogs in an enormous machine by giving them numbers instead of names, which is exactly what happened with Imperials, and before that, the Clones of the grand army of the Republic.
Both episodes are setting up for something big that’s about to happen later in the season. There’s no way they would take away that much screen time from Mando in a single episode if there wasn’t going to be a payoff. And for the Bad Batch, I’m predicting that Sid is going to sell them out and the empire is going to seize that entire island and capture the Batch.
I kind of find it poetic that the new republic tried so hard establish the utopia that had been dreamed of during the rebellion, that they ended up creating their own dystopian society
As creepy as this was, it does provide good worldbuilding to the galaxy and the current government status, in how messed up the New Republic is, something we don’t see in the Sequels. Anyone notice the Resistance Theme during the carnival/mountain scene?
Why does the re-purposed torture device still have the dial that goes to 11? That’s just poor design. Imagine buying a tens unit that could also be a defibrillator if you accidentally turn it up too much
Probably because various dial sets are meant for various species or mental issues. It’s similar to why cars can go so fast. You likely will never need to turn the dial up but if you have to well it’s available.
even in motor vehicles the speed is artificially limited by a governing device. the speedometer goes to 160mph but the vehicle has systems in place to cap the actual top speed somewhere around 112mph. Also, if the device is meant to rehabilitate former Imperials, there would be almost zero need for it to be cross-species since the Imps were extremely intolerant of non-humans within their ranks.
Ever since I saw that imperial comma officer of Gideon’s I was immediately expecting something to go down. But they broke it to us gently which is why I thought this episode was so good!!
The first security flaw i noticed was that the new republic navy its self was undergoing decommissioning. Pershing's statement in the records office was correct. What could be reused or repurposed should have been. Food stocks can be used as a phase out program with relabled packaging in way of a sticker or such, equipment like the lab equipment mouse droids, mops ect... could be put into new republic service. Arms could be put in reserve armory and the ships mothballed in case of need. Pershing should have never been a pencil pusher, as a field expert to atleast learn of his techniques at an academic level and possibly a clinical level. Also place fully vetted plants the likes of wedge Antilles or han solo ho joined the rebellion after had time in the empire through academy or having been in the field but having been early enough to not be a risk in each of the amnesty housing blocks. Also review the footage of the droid interviews for anomalies.
I get the idea that the anomalies from the droid interviews were being fed to the New Republic Intelligence officer watching over him... unfortunately said Intelligence officer was also an Imperial double agent.
To all those who don't know and are interested, that is the exact oposite of what happened in Legends expanded universe lore. In that timeline, the New Republic was far more succesfull. They never demilitarised, they waged war with the imperial remnants for many years past Endor and would NEVER even think of leting former imperial fascists to roam freely in their borders like we see New Canon's New Republic do. Admiral Palleon, once Thrawn's second in command reunified the remaining splinter factions under an official Imperial Remnant and after a few more years of pointless fighting he made a hard decision to sign a peace treaty. The Republic actually decided to accept the conditional surrender of the Empire and while that may seem odd to some (due to the atrocities they had commited in both continuities), they did it exacy to prevent the outcome we see in the Mandalorian. While the treaty allowed an officially independant imperial successor state to exist with former war criminals still in power within it, Palleon himself was far less palpatinian and initiated a sort "thaw" within the empire, with less genocides and xenophobia going around. Aditionally that situation protected the Republic from rogue imperials who were kept on a leash and would otherwise do everything to sabotage them. The Republic could have easily just launched a final campain, smashing the remnant into oblivion, putting the criminals on trials and closing every imperial institution, but they would never be able to prevent hidden imperial simps to exploit their own weaknesses from within again, like we see in Mando. So all in all, the Legends New Republic was far smarter than Disney Canon's NR. Of course everything comes at a cost, the remnant would later gain more power and after many decades would become a problem, but nonetheless the Republic benefited on their decision. Not that they didn't have internal problems, to be fair they did, they did not fully recover after the war and their political division threw them into passivity against external threats (that allowed to the nomadic armies of Yuuzhan Vong to invade). Personally I'd love Geetsly's to make such a comparison between new and old canon's New Republic.
During the entire episode I kept getting these "dystopian society" vibes, more so than with the Empire. Back with the Empire, you could be certain that things were black and white, good or evil, but right now everything feels so... uncannily positive, so "off". Surely I wasn't the only one to think this.
This episode reminds me a little bit of west world with Dolores awakening or wiping the memories of the hosts in the park. Dr. Pershing was treated like a host. Not only that it gives a good explanation to why the new republic was easily taken down
The repurposed/redesigned mindflayer is one of those things that I have to look at like how medications and treatments work in real life. While it's repurposing and redesign are meant to heal, they clearly had levels, durations, and calculations needed to keep it therapeutic. So a high level might not erase memories immediately, and is likely reserved for psychosis cases, but the long duration is likely what would mess with the doctor's memories. A low duration over a period of time that sounded like hours might not of mindwiped/reprogrammed, but the communication's officer knew that a higher setting for that long could mess with memories, likely a side effect of it being reversed engineered technology. So you can reason while it is saferthan the imperial version, it was not... 'safe' or therapeutic, and can still be abused. The rest of the episode leaned into dystopian, and the dehumanization makes me wonder if it truly was an altered unit. Seeing their dislike of using imperial tech, I am split 50/50 on this.
I just love the parallel of Pershing being a much less severe case of Anakin, someone who has good intentions and skills, and wants to use those skills to better help the galaxy but being held back by the institution they’re in, being goaded by someone posing to be a friend and mentor.
I've been rewatching Rebels lately and I watched this episode of The Mandalorian just after watching the moment in Season 4 of Rebels where Saw Guerrera chastises Mon Mothma for not having the balls to actually hit the Empire where it hurts, and for being afraid to do the ugly thing when it'll make the difference between winning and losing. Now, granted, Saw wasn't necessarily the best guy to be leading the Rebellion either, but I think it's obvious that the difference in perspective that the two of them had, and the fact that Mon Mothma is the one who survived and went on to lead the New Republic, was on full display in this episode of the Mandalorian. The people who would have had the steel resolve to keep the New Republic on track, to truly root out the Empire once and for all, didn't live to the end of the war. Ethics matter, yes. But sometimes things get ugly. And yeah, sometimes you need to prioritize the RIGHT thing to do over the COMFORTABLE thing to do.
The New Republic give me the same vibes from the Demolition Man society. All that joy joy love love peace to you friend bs and sugar coated nicety. That really gave me the creeps in this episode
I was convinced this episode was some sort of illusion of reality altering tech display or something honestly, then inqas like, oh, i get it, that's insane
The scene with the tip of the highest mountain on the planet peeking out from the manmade construction of the city really stood out to me. It's supposed to be a monument to their achievement, I suppose, but its actually chilling. Talk about the tip of an iceberg. Coruscant focuses 1000% on its shiny outer later and ignores the implication of what must be hidden at the bottom of such a mountainous height, not to mention what's been done to the planet itself.
I like that line at the end “simpering niceties” great description of everything wrong with the wrong with the way the New Republic is treating the former imps
Theory: the New Republic being a hidden dystopia was meant to be the main focus of the Rangers of the New Republic series, but because it got cancelled, this was one of the elements that was incorporated to The Mandalorian.
The shipyard probably does has security they just removed it to help him feel comfortable going in the ship. The sting was set up ahead of time. That being said the NR obviously has their priorities out of balance. Why would they even have a mind flayer with settings that can be raised that high. Its just asking for misuse or mistakes. It can’t be for different species having different thresholds the empire was human centric.
I'd say more like Brave New World. Everyone seems happy, everything must be colorful and cheerful at all times and bad vibes aren't allowed. Everybody's given a soma (kind of dopamine/serotonin inducing drug) if they feel down at any time. A carefree, polygamous sexual life is not only encouraged but it's also compulsory. There must be no sense of duty or honor towards one single person or mission. Privacy is also a thing of the past as the collective is put above the individual at all times, but not just the practical good of the collective, as much as the sentimental good of the collective. 1984's Oceania at least feels like a totalitarian hellscape with Hate Week and war all the time, but the torture room with the mind flayer reminded me of Room 101 in the Ministry of Love (Miniluv)
As I was watching this episode with some friends, every time to music was tense, Pershing was alone, or the lightning was bad, we were all like ‘and here comes the imperial silencer’ like, we knew he was going to be silenced in one way or another, but good god, they way he was silenced was so sad. Also, if someone was screaming at you ‘she tricked me’ and what not, even if you have to put them into the mind flayer, you don’t leave them unsupervised. And you would certainly bring them in for questioning right away
Who knows, maybe the Mind Flayer will just mess up Dr. Pershing’s mind instead of wiping it, making him unstable, possibly evil. It would make for quite a sympathetic villain!
Some thing I do want to point out. Well a lot of people think that Thrawn is going to be the main villain of the season. Eila Kane, may just be the best lead we have on who the actual antagonist is a one grand moff Ardus Kane. it would be a perfect time to introduce the Pentastar alignment due to the fact that they’re semi-legitimate, and therefore the new republic would be encouraged to leave them alone. While simultaneously being an imperial remnant faction, known for utilizing the dark side.
It reminds me of the story of a scientist in my country. He wanted to develop solar panels, but he was arrested. The composition of the substances for cleaning the panels included a drug and now he is in prison for possession of narcotic substances.

At least I loved to finally see a little part of Coruscant natural landscape, in the form of the Peak of Umate. Incredible to think that the peak of the highest mountain on the planet, seems just like another casual monument on the floor level of the city
After watching this episode, maybe the Empire wasn't so bad after all. I think it is worth mentioning that New Republic authorities were so easily fooled and used by Elia Kane. Wouldn't be suprised if there were more Imperial sleeper agents inside upper echelons of New Republic government and military. Also, I feel bad for Dr. Pershing. He just wanted to do some good for the galaxy, but was used by the Empire and brain cooked by the New Republic.
Apparently star wars is copying captain America winter soldier to explain sequel trilogy,empire infiltrated the new republic and grew to the point it couldn't be stopped under thrawn
I wonder if the idea to use numbers was pitched as an idea to make them feel comfortable. Stormtroopers were only referred to by designation for example. I can see them making that decision, it's very feelings based which I could see them doing.
I believe the ships were left unguarded intentionally,to catch Pershing on the spot in coordination with Elia. No way they would just leave military equipment out in the open without anyone guarding it.
I honestly didn’t know what to think of this episode, and I don’t even know if the Dr’s mind was completely wiped, or only had parts of it wiped, I hope it was only partially wiped so he only forgot about the new republic and as a result is pretty much loyal to the empire again. But overall I agree it was a little weird
Man, I'd rather live under the Empire knowing transparently that we have to live and think a certain way instead of being spoon-fed the idea that all is good and that we're free and able to think however we want when it's the opposite.
it's a bit heavy handed and my hope is that people don't try to come away with it with the wrong message, that being "restorative justice bad" where I think the intention is more about over correction to avoid any semblance to the Empire. My understanding is, it's the compromise Mon Mothma likely had to make to keep the Alliance together after the Empire fell. How many Alliance worlds were once separatists with legitimate grievances with the Old Republic? To keep the New Republic from fracturing into a thousand pieces, compromises must have been made, potently ones that people in charge knew would be disaster. it was preferable to more costly wars.
That's a really good point. I can definitely see the rest of the Alliance after the war wanting a weaker centralized government after the Empire as well. Just to keep everyone together the compromises unintentionally made a flawed and weak government.
To think Luke,Leia,han and Lando couldn't stop this from happening especially Ashoka and ghost crew since everyone forgot what they went through during the empire rule
I'm not sure about the lore, but it feels like the New Republic is the beginnings of the First Order. In almost the exact same way Palpatine did with the previous Republic. If that's the case, and it wasn't Thrawn or Gideon, could it be the New Republic who had those bombers/interceptors attack Din and Bo? Or would it be someone like Brendol Hux or Rae Sloane? The deleting of Empire records is also sus af.

It would appear that instead of retconning the sequels, they are setting up the plot to where one cannot blame the sequels for ending up the way it did. Luke was probably scoffed at with something like "We don't need your warrior monks with laser swords!" Luke and his new Jedi were probably shunned as a cult much like the Children of the Watch were to the Mandalorians. Lei refused to disarm having to break off from the New Republic as "The Resistance" Resistance not only against the Imperial remnants but also against this dystopia the New Republic has become. We next will probably see how Han went from hero of the rebels back to two bit smuggler. What we are being built up to is when Star Killer Base finally blows up the New Republics leadership, we will say "Good Riddance!" And we will not be able to blame Luke for becoming a disillusioned Hermit
The thing is, the "revolution" part of the revolution didn't really happen. From this episode, we see how the old machinery is still in place, it's given a new coat of paint while a lot of the old higher-ups get to live their comfortable lives. The culture the Empire fostered survived, only now it's nicer. We could chalk that up to how non-ideological the Rebellion was. Sure, it was anti-Palpatine and pro-Democracy, but the Alliance was a patchwork of different interests that just happened to intersect at hating the current system, and when they won, it didn't change much.
The whole sequence after they get captured at the junkyard only makes sense if Elia Kane had help. A lot of it. She got caught with Pershing. She was in the searchlight with him. And she just pickups up the kit, steps away, and nods, knowing that he's going down, and she's not. That only makes sense if the cops were more than just incompetent, but actively corrupt. Like; the whole squad. She gives her statement, which clears herself, and implicates Pershing, which is only possible if there are multiple officials on the take. Leaving him alone in the mind flayer with her, and not even having the most basic safety features on the machine; yes, there's layers of incompetence there, but none of that should have happened with sheer incompetence alone. There had to be deliberate malice on the part of practically everyone in the room.
1st, I loved the beginning and end of this episode, which none of these videos seem to be talking about. After bathing in the living waters and seeing the mythasore, now her home is destroyed and she's accepted into Din's clan. Add to that Din having the dark saber, and it all seems very karmic. That being said, I didn't love the new storyline, but I didn't hate it. Parts seemed very slow and made me wonder what's the point. Yes, the New Republic seemed too nice, to the point of being creepy, and the doctor's betrayal at the end was also very disturbing. Enabled in part by the nicey nice of the New Republic.

Ironically it was the defense of Naboo defeating the Trade Federation that inspired the Outer Rim worlds to break away and form the Separatist alliance with Dooku at the head.
They’re kinda similar when the rebels started out they weren’t united and had lots of malicious people in it. Though that was until political members funded and sorted the rebellion out .
The separatists on the other hand were being manipulated by the Sith since the beginning.

Then palpatine comes into play and controls the republic and the separatist .

That's why General Leia Organa was against the senate for the demilitarisation of the New Republic, but being a new democracy and all, the majority was tired of the war and only wanted a small fleet for protection, not warfare. Leia was running for the office of chancellorship so she can have more authority to keep the fleet, until her political opponent released the proof that she was the daughter of Darth Vader, and at that point she lost any credibility to the rest of the galaxy and had to back out of the election. At that point is when Leia runs away from the new republic to train with Luke and to build her own militarised faction, the Resistance. While legally her resistance is unrecognised by the new republic senate. There are some senators who agree with her and secretly funder her operations all to the name of protecting the new democracy from any imperial remnants warlords and against whatever that comes next.

The new republic was built upon a defeated Empire and a crumbling Republic. It never had any chance to succeed. They would’ve never had the resources to do anything. The Empire worked because they neglected killed or enslaved people to reach their goals. Without using those methods how are you going to get anything to work. That’s why I assumed they were using so many droids, because after the death and destruction of the war they had a manpower shortage.

I found some of the dialog in this episode really creepy.
The citizens in the opera house, Dr. Pershing's boss and the medical tech all came across as really weird and creepy!
Those citizens at the opera house are aristocrats. They are naturally creepy, especially when socializing in the public.

Honestly, the citizens in the Opera House seemed like some of the most realistic people to me, in the sense that I saw it relating to the real world. Sycophants who are so curled up in the wealth that the troubles of the world around them pass them by unnoticed, and they'll happily suckle at the teat of whoever is in power just so they can keep living within the excess and hedonism they exist in. That corruption is what caused the Clone Wars in the first place, it makes sense that it never actually went away. Even under the Empire, the lives of the elite on Coruscant's upper levels didn't really change, as evidenced in Andor. Just utterly disconnected and not really caring. It absolutely made sense to me, especially since that dynamic exists in the real world, too.
The fact that they didn’t even modify it or install any safety settings probably speaks to an attitude of “we only put the ones who deserve it in there, and even if the dial gets turned up one too many notches, they’re imps. Who cares?” Which makes sense, there’s probably a lot of vindictive people in the galaxy who are looking for their turn to hurt the empire the way they were hurt, but now the empires gone. So all they can do is send people who aren’t meeting the NR standard to the mind flayer.

The fragments of the Empire that remain now aren't a reliable ally, it wouldn't make sense for him to remain loyal to them. I don't doubt he's coming back, but I don't particularly think it's to help make a Palpatine clone.

I've got to go with Geetly's on this one. The storyline with Dr Pershing in this episode felt like We Happy Few with some Orwellian vibes.
The entire time watching the episode I was constantly thinking, "alright, this is nice. Now when is the other shoe gonna drop?". And lo and behold, The Mandalorian did not fail to deliver.
The amnesty program has a real life historical basis, it is based on Operation Paperclip.
Well not really. , paperclip was just scientists. , it wasn'ta general amnesty. And the government wanted to exploit them fully.
And believe me, the fruits of that project were worthwhile. Shame the Cold War had to end on mutual terms, though.

I know it's a hot take, but think about the Ukrainian war. The east tells you, that the Ukraine is evil, even though many families are completely justified in defending their home. Western media on the other hand, tells you that Russia is evil, while they are ignoring the fact that the Eastern Ukraine is entirely justified in their wish to be independent. Even the news about Nazis in the Ukraine aren't completely untrue. Yes, the Nazis in the Ukraine are a minority, but the government in Kiev is at least willing to tolerate them as long as they fight against Russia.
But neither western nor eastern media talk about the perspective of the other side and their own mistakes. The media on both sides seem to be unable or unwilling to paint the full picture with catastrophic results. It's only a matter of time until this war will expand and drag the whole world into it. Both sides will fight to the death until there is nothing left to fight for. And then, far too late, they'll realize that the true war was never fought against their respective enemies. It was fought against themselves. And in the end everyone died for nothing, or worse, for a destroyed world.

I felt really bad for Dr Pershing, I know he's a imperial but even in season 1 and 2 he really felt like, just a guy trying to do his job he didn't feel mean malicious or evil, he also prevented Grogu from dying in season 1. He really felt like just some guy that was trying really hard to be better person and use his research to be a better person and I was actually hoping he would get a better chance at life, and use his cloning resarch to do good and help people he seemed very sincere in wating to make the galaxy better!
Not to mention his upset about brand new imperial equipment being destroyed when it could be repurposed or even donated to outerim worlds that could use it felt very justified the empire was bad yes, but to just destroy every bit of research and technology is so wasteful and stupid. also I'm sorry but those new republic uniforms are just hideous i do not like the open collar and part down the middle.

This New Republic was SO SCARY. It was like every horror movie wrapped up together. I was like "Why are the former imperials so jolly????". i was feeling VERY off about Elia Kane from the very start. AMAZING episode, but so scary. literally the Andor episode of Bix being tortured was less scary
For some reason, to me true totalitarianism showing it's true colors of harsh discipline and sense of duty being instilled in individuals is less scary than a Crap Saccharine World where feelings are put above all else and hence everything feels fake and plastic.
The 'mindflayer' kind of make sense. The Empire was known for prisons, labor camps and executions. So the 'mindflayer', repurposed by the New Republic, seemed a better alternative, because there's no prison, labor camp, or executions involved. Of course, this brings up a new type of horror.

Is it just me, or did this episode have Thrawn written all over it?
First Bo's home is destroyed. Now, look at what was sent for it. A small bomber squadron, and dozens of tie interceptors.
This isn't likely another moff. Moff Gideon was clearly a fairly well known and prestigious moff, and even he only enjoyed in Imperial Light Cruiser and a small compliment of tie fighters. Yet now there's an Imperial remnant capable of sending dozens of starfighters just to bomb Bo's home and to try and ensure she's dead? And we have an Imperial coms officer who is pretty clearly still imp wiping the mind of a potential imp liability and a possible NR tool?
I am betting here and now Thrawn is making his moves. He heard of Bo being a bit of an annoyance and sought to ensure she was eliminated before she could rally Mandalorians and be more of an issue (They were key in his end before as well, and leading the mandalorians when he was defeated was Bo herself.)
However, he couldn't account for the fact that she was already off world. In fact I would wager he had monitored the planet and noted that she never left, and rarely had visitors. She was alone. And stationary for some time.
It's just the time of attack happens to be right when she needs to save some ass.
I could be wrong, but they teased Thrawn last season. They show the NR isn't great, a clear Imperial spy, talks of Gideons fate is left in the air, the destruction of Bo's home (Either a punishment or attempted execution) and the Imperial forces we saw on display. Even if Bo pissed off several different warlords, I doubt they would work together to send such a force.
Especially of superior tie models in the interceptor, rather than regular tie fighters.
As said I could be 100% wrong. But I am getting so many vibes that Thrawn is making his moves and preparing for a takeover.

Oh most defiantly. This can't just be another Moff at work, I mean Gideon was probably the highest or one of the highest ranked Imperials left and even he didn't have this many resources, clearly what with the sheer amount of Fighters that attacked Bo's home and what the Imperial this episode was up to to get rid of the doctor something else is up here. Even if some corruption allowed Gideon to get off without execution, the NR would still at least keep him somewhere where he can't give orders to surviving Imperials, clearly, someone more powerful has taken over his operation or was the one really in charge of it the entire time, and that is Thrawn. I wasn't expecting him to make big moves until Ahsoka season 1, but it seems Ahsoka and others hunting him, as well as Gideon's defeat and his remnant destroyed along with some of the cloning research, has forced Thrawn to act early now striking to get rid of key threats like the doctor and Bo, and probably the Mandalorians in general.
Also worth noting that when Bo Katan seized the Light Cruiser is S2 her question to the Imperial commander was "where is Thrawn" - not "Where is Gideon", but looking for Thrawn in particular.
Now if Thrawn has returned and knows someone is looking for him...
Also Thrawn related is that the two people that Elia Kane mainuplates to end up alone with Pershing in the Mind Flayer is a Twilek and a Mon Calamari - species that Thrawn liked to manipulate through his understanding of their psychological limitations as he understood it from their art.
Thrawn missjin is for.his people and the greater threat in the unknown region tbh i tbink timothy zahn should be the one doing the story for thrawn
Now we just need some Tie Defenders and it's confirmed.

I feel like that was intentional, just to show how little has actually changed for the people that live there. The motifs and the furniture change, but everything seems to be in the same place otherwise.

New Republic: Nah, more like *under new managment*
The amnesty program rather seems to work like an open penitentiary than providing an actual rehabilitation and reintegration.
I wouldn't say I am creeped out but rather glad about this. I say that because it reinterprets the New Republic (and, to an extent, the Rebel Alliance.) as not just this pure force of good. The people that were fawning over the Doctor? They are supposed to be the wealthy elite of the Galaxy, if not Coruscant, at a bare minimum. As the Wealthy elite, they never faced the myriad of problems that the Galaxy faced, hell I am pretty sure most of them were probably talking about how great the Empire was when it ruled. For them, it doesn't matter who is in charge; they get to keep their lovely privileges and wealth. And as to why the security was nonexistent? It's probably because, in reality, it is not a reform and de-radicalizing program but a "work integration" program, where the Imperials that agree to join the New Republic get their citizenship by performing some labor for the New Republic, and naturally, the work they do is something menial (but necessary for the New Republic to function.)

I'm glad they showed this, despite the Rebel Alliance and the New Republic being shown as these goodie two shoes type of people they were in reality nearly as bad as the Empire in some cases

In all seriousness, the New Republic is treating their workers like cogs in an enormous machine by giving them numbers instead of names, which is exactly what happened with Imperials, and before that, the Clones of the grand army of the Republic.

Both episodes are setting up for something big that’s about to happen later in the season. There’s no way they would take away that much screen time from Mando in a single episode if there wasn’t going to be a payoff. And for the Bad Batch, I’m predicting that Sid is going to sell them out and the empire is going to seize that entire island and capture the Batch.
I kind of find it poetic that the new republic tried so hard establish the utopia that had been dreamed of during the rebellion, that they ended up creating their own dystopian society

Why does the re-purposed torture device still have the dial that goes to 11? That’s just poor design. Imagine buying a tens unit that could also be a defibrillator if you accidentally turn it up too much
Probably because various dial sets are meant for various species or mental issues. It’s similar to why cars can go so fast. You likely will never need to turn the dial up but if you have to well it’s available.
even in motor vehicles the speed is artificially limited by a governing device. the speedometer goes to 160mph but the vehicle has systems in place to cap the actual top speed somewhere around 112mph.
Also, if the device is meant to rehabilitate former Imperials, there would be almost zero need for it to be cross-species since the Imps were extremely intolerant of non-humans within their ranks.

Ever since I saw that imperial comma officer of Gideon’s I was immediately expecting something to go down. But they broke it to us gently which is why I thought this episode was so good!!
The first security flaw i noticed was that the new republic navy its self was undergoing decommissioning. Pershing's statement in the records office was correct. What could be reused or repurposed should have been. Food stocks can be used as a phase out program with relabled packaging in way of a sticker or such, equipment like the lab equipment mouse droids, mops ect... could be put into new republic service. Arms could be put in reserve armory and the ships mothballed in case of need. Pershing should have never been a pencil pusher, as a field expert to atleast learn of his techniques at an academic level and possibly a clinical level. Also place fully vetted plants the likes of wedge Antilles or han solo ho joined the rebellion after had time in the empire through academy or having been in the field but having been early enough to not be a risk in each of the amnesty housing blocks. Also review the footage of the droid interviews for anomalies.
I feel like he and Tech (The Bad Batch) would get along well in terms of Science!

I get the idea that the anomalies from the droid interviews were being fed to the New Republic Intelligence officer watching over him... unfortunately said Intelligence officer was also an Imperial double agent.
The Galactic Republic, the Empire and the New Republic are basically the exact same monster but just wearing a different façade.

To all those who don't know and are interested, that is the exact oposite of what happened in Legends expanded universe lore. In that timeline, the New Republic was far more succesfull. They never demilitarised, they waged war with the imperial remnants for many years past Endor and would NEVER even think of leting former imperial fascists to roam freely in their borders like we see New Canon's New Republic do. Admiral Palleon, once Thrawn's second in command reunified the remaining splinter factions under an official Imperial Remnant and after a few more years of pointless fighting he made a hard decision to sign a peace treaty.
The Republic actually decided to accept the conditional surrender of the Empire and while that may seem odd to some (due to the atrocities they had commited in both continuities), they did it exacy to prevent the outcome we see in the Mandalorian. While the treaty allowed an officially independant imperial successor state to exist with former war criminals still in power within it, Palleon himself was far less palpatinian and initiated a sort "thaw" within the empire, with less genocides and xenophobia going around. Aditionally that situation protected the Republic from rogue imperials who were kept on a leash and would otherwise do everything to sabotage them. The Republic could have easily just launched a final campain, smashing the remnant into oblivion, putting the criminals on trials and closing every imperial institution, but they would never be able to prevent hidden imperial simps to exploit their own weaknesses from within again, like we see in Mando. So all in all, the Legends New Republic was far smarter than Disney Canon's NR.
Of course everything comes at a cost, the remnant would later gain more power and after many decades would become a problem, but nonetheless the Republic benefited on their decision. Not that they didn't have internal problems, to be fair they did, they did not fully recover after the war and their political division threw them into passivity against external threats (that allowed to the nomadic armies of Yuuzhan Vong to invade).
Personally I'd love Geetsly's to make such a comparison between new and old canon's New Republic.
During the entire episode I kept getting these "dystopian society" vibes, more so than with the Empire. Back with the Empire, you could be certain that things were black and white, good or evil, but right now everything feels so... uncannily positive, so "off". Surely I wasn't the only one to think this.

This episode reminds me a little bit of west world with Dolores awakening or wiping the memories of the hosts in the park. Dr. Pershing was treated like a host. Not only that it gives a good explanation to why the new republic was easily taken down
Really impressed with mandalorian s3 so far, shaping up to be a really great season and I can't wait to see what they have to show us next
The repurposed/redesigned mindflayer is one of those things that I have to look at like how medications and treatments work in real life. While it's repurposing and redesign are meant to heal, they clearly had levels, durations, and calculations needed to keep it therapeutic. So a high level might not erase memories immediately, and is likely reserved for psychosis cases, but the long duration is likely what would mess with the doctor's memories. A low duration over a period of time that sounded like hours might not of mindwiped/reprogrammed, but the communication's officer knew that a higher setting for that long could mess with memories, likely a side effect of it being reversed engineered technology. So you can reason while it is saferthan the imperial version, it was not... 'safe' or therapeutic, and can still be abused. The rest of the episode leaned into dystopian, and the dehumanization makes me wonder if it truly was an altered unit. Seeing their dislike of using imperial tech, I am split 50/50 on this.
In that case, you could make the same argument you made for the mind flayer, but for Dr. Pershing's cloning research.

I just love the parallel of Pershing being a much less severe case of Anakin, someone who has good intentions and skills, and wants to use those skills to better help the galaxy but being held back by the institution they’re in, being goaded by someone posing to be a friend and mentor.
I've been rewatching Rebels lately and I watched this episode of The Mandalorian just after watching the moment in Season 4 of Rebels where Saw Guerrera chastises Mon Mothma for not having the balls to actually hit the Empire where it hurts, and for being afraid to do the ugly thing when it'll make the difference between winning and losing. Now, granted, Saw wasn't necessarily the best guy to be leading the Rebellion either, but I think it's obvious that the difference in perspective that the two of them had, and the fact that Mon Mothma is the one who survived and went on to lead the New Republic, was on full display in this episode of the Mandalorian. The people who would have had the steel resolve to keep the New Republic on track, to truly root out the Empire once and for all, didn't live to the end of the war.
Ethics matter, yes. But sometimes things get ugly. And yeah, sometimes you need to prioritize the RIGHT thing to do over the COMFORTABLE thing to do.

I was convinced this episode was some sort of illusion of reality altering tech display or something honestly, then inqas like, oh, i get it, that's insane
The scene with the tip of the highest mountain on the planet peeking out from the manmade construction of the city really stood out to me. It's supposed to be a monument to their achievement, I suppose, but its actually chilling. Talk about the tip of an iceberg. Coruscant focuses 1000% on its shiny outer later and ignores the implication of what must be hidden at the bottom of such a mountainous height, not to mention what's been done to the planet itself.
I like that line at the end “simpering niceties” great description of everything wrong with the wrong with the way the New Republic is treating the former imps
Theory: the New Republic being a hidden dystopia was meant to be the main focus of the Rangers of the New Republic series, but because it got cancelled, this was one of the elements that was incorporated to The Mandalorian.

The shipyard probably does has security they just removed it to help him feel comfortable going in the ship. The sting was set up ahead of time. That being said the NR obviously has their priorities out of balance. Why would they even have a mind flayer with settings that can be raised that high. Its just asking for misuse or mistakes. It can’t be for different species having different thresholds the empire was human centric.

I'd say more like Brave New World. Everyone seems happy, everything must be colorful and cheerful at all times and bad vibes aren't allowed. Everybody's given a soma (kind of dopamine/serotonin inducing drug) if they feel down at any time. A carefree, polygamous sexual life is not only encouraged but it's also compulsory. There must be no sense of duty or honor towards one single person or mission. Privacy is also a thing of the past as the collective is put above the individual at all times, but not just the practical good of the collective, as much as the sentimental good of the collective.
1984's Oceania at least feels like a totalitarian hellscape with Hate Week and war all the time, but the torture room with the mind flayer reminded me of Room 101 in the Ministry of Love (Miniluv)
As I was watching this episode with some friends, every time to music was tense, Pershing was alone, or the lightning was bad, we were all like ‘and here comes the imperial silencer’ like, we knew he was going to be silenced in one way or another, but good god, they way he was silenced was so sad. Also, if someone was screaming at you ‘she tricked me’ and what not, even if you have to put them into the mind flayer, you don’t leave them unsupervised. And you would certainly bring them in for questioning right away
This saw me is better to join the Mandalorians than the Empire or the New Republic.

Who knows, maybe the Mind Flayer will just mess up Dr. Pershing’s mind instead of wiping it, making him unstable, possibly evil. It would make for quite a sympathetic villain!

Some thing I do want to point out. Well a lot of people think that Thrawn is going to be the main villain of the season. Eila Kane, may just be the best lead we have on who the actual antagonist is a one grand moff Ardus Kane. it would be a perfect time to introduce the Pentastar alignment due to the fact that they’re semi-legitimate, and therefore the new republic would be encouraged to leave them alone. While simultaneously being an imperial remnant faction, known for utilizing the dark side.
It reminds me of the story of a scientist in my country. He wanted to develop solar panels, but he was arrested. The composition of the substances for cleaning the panels included a drug and now he is in prison for possession of narcotic substances.

At least I loved to finally see a little part of Coruscant natural landscape, in the form of the Peak of Umate. Incredible to think that the peak of the highest mountain on the planet, seems just like another casual monument on the floor level of the city
After watching this episode, maybe the Empire wasn't so bad after all.
I think it is worth mentioning that New Republic authorities were so easily fooled and used by Elia Kane. Wouldn't be suprised if there were more Imperial sleeper agents inside upper echelons of New Republic government and military.
Also, I feel bad for Dr. Pershing. He just wanted to do some good for the galaxy, but was used by the Empire and brain cooked by the New Republic.

I honestly didn’t know what to think of this episode, and I don’t even know if the Dr’s mind was completely wiped, or only had parts of it wiped, I hope it was only partially wiped so he only forgot about the new republic and as a result is pretty much loyal to the empire again. But overall I agree it was a little weird

Man, I'd rather live under the Empire knowing transparently that we have to live and think a certain way instead of being spoon-fed the idea that all is good and that we're free and able to think however we want when it's the opposite.
it's a bit heavy handed and my hope is that people don't try to come away with it with the wrong message, that being "restorative justice bad" where I think the intention is more about over correction to avoid any semblance to the Empire. My understanding is, it's the compromise Mon Mothma likely had to make to keep the Alliance together after the Empire fell. How many Alliance worlds were once separatists with legitimate grievances with the Old Republic? To keep the New Republic from fracturing into a thousand pieces, compromises must have been made, potently ones that people in charge knew would be disaster. it was preferable to more costly wars.
That's a really good point. I can definitely see the rest of the Alliance after the war wanting a weaker centralized government after the Empire as well. Just to keep everyone together the compromises unintentionally made a flawed and weak government.
To think Luke,Leia,han and Lando couldn't stop this from happening especially Ashoka and ghost crew since everyone forgot what they went through during the empire rule

I'm not sure about the lore, but it feels like the New Republic is the beginnings of the First Order. In almost the exact same way Palpatine did with the previous Republic. If that's the case, and it wasn't Thrawn or Gideon, could it be the New Republic who had those bombers/interceptors attack Din and Bo? Or would it be someone like Brendol Hux or Rae Sloane? The deleting of Empire records is also sus af.

It would appear that instead of retconning the sequels, they are setting up the plot to where one cannot blame the sequels for ending up the way it did. Luke was probably scoffed at with something like "We don't need your warrior monks with laser swords!" Luke and his new Jedi were probably shunned as a cult much like the Children of the Watch were to the Mandalorians. Lei refused to disarm having to break off from the New Republic as "The Resistance" Resistance not only against the Imperial remnants but also against this dystopia the New Republic has become. We next will probably see how Han went from hero of the rebels back to two bit smuggler. What we are being built up to is when Star Killer Base finally blows up the New Republics leadership, we will say "Good Riddance!" And we will not be able to blame Luke for becoming a disillusioned Hermit
Great theory, I hope F&F will steal it from you and make it canon because it explains everything so well.
The thing is, the "revolution" part of the revolution didn't really happen. From this episode, we see how the old machinery is still in place, it's given a new coat of paint while a lot of the old higher-ups get to live their comfortable lives. The culture the Empire fostered survived, only now it's nicer. We could chalk that up to how non-ideological the Rebellion was. Sure, it was anti-Palpatine and pro-Democracy, but the Alliance was a patchwork of different interests that just happened to intersect at hating the current system, and when they won, it didn't change much.
The whole sequence after they get captured at the junkyard only makes sense if Elia Kane had help. A lot of it. She got caught with Pershing. She was in the searchlight with him. And she just pickups up the kit, steps away, and nods, knowing that he's going down, and she's not. That only makes sense if the cops were more than just incompetent, but actively corrupt. Like; the whole squad. She gives her statement, which clears herself, and implicates Pershing, which is only possible if there are multiple officials on the take. Leaving him alone in the mind flayer with her, and not even having the most basic safety features on the machine; yes, there's layers of incompetence there, but none of that should have happened with sheer incompetence alone. There had to be deliberate malice on the part of practically everyone in the room.
1st, I loved the beginning and end of this episode, which none of these videos seem to be talking about. After bathing in the living waters and seeing the mythasore, now her home is destroyed and she's accepted into Din's clan. Add to that Din having the dark saber, and it all seems very karmic.
That being said, I didn't love the new storyline, but I didn't hate it. Parts seemed very slow and made me wonder what's the point. Yes, the New Republic seemed too nice, to the point of being creepy, and the doctor's betrayal at the end was also very disturbing. Enabled in part by the nicey nice of the New Republic.
