Le premier véritable concerto de Mozart pour un instrument solo et orchestre date du mois de décembre 1773 et il est écrit pour le clavecin (K.175). Ce petit concerto est animé d'une vitalité que nous ne retrouverons plus d'ici quelques années dans l'œuvre de Mozart ; c'est une dernière manifestation personnelle avant l'assoupissement des années de musique galante. Néanmoins, il se trouve que les premiers concertos de Mozart et surtout le premier de tous n'ont pas besoin de leur titre d'aînés pour nous intéresser. Ils possèdent un charme qui est à eux et ils peuvent, momentanément du moins, nous retenir et nous plaire. Celui qui veut bien s'attarder au bord de ces eaux limpides et examiner leurs moindres beautés d'un regard minutieux et aimant, sera suffisamment récompensé par les joies de cette tâche sans que la vision au loin des concertos plus grandioses qu'ils ont précédés soit nécessaire pour encourager sa persévérance.
Il fallait seulement qu'une circonstance extérieure vînt, ne fût-ce que momentanément, libérer le jeune musicien des entraves que lui imposaient les conventions. Cette circonstance se présenta en janvier 1777. Il passa alors à Salzbourg une pianiste française d'un certain renom, Mlle Jeunehomme, et un concerto fut commandé à Mozart. La présence de cette virtuose étrangère réveilla toute sa flamme ; désireux de se montrer à son mieux devant une interprète autrement plus intéressante que la comtesse de Lodron et ses filles, il dut faire passer à l'état conscient le travail qui s'était fait en lui à son insu. Dans les concertos de 1776, l'importance du public était suprême ; son goût déterminait le diapason de l'œuvre. C'est maintenant le compositeur qui importe ; le public est passé au second plan. Il s'agit bien plus pour lui de s'exprimer que de soigner timidement le goût des auditeurs ; cela suffit seulement à expliquer toutes les différences entre ce concerto et les précédents.

Le premier témoignage que nous possédons de l’activité musicale du petit homme se rapporte à un concerto pour clavecin qu'à grand renfort de taches d'encre il composait en 1760, à quatre ans. Le vieil ami de la famille, le trompettiste Schachtner, rapporte le dialogue suivant :
PAPA : Que fais-tu ?
WOLFGANG : Un concerto pour Clavecin ; la première partie est presque finie.
PAPA : Fais voir.
WOLFGANG. : Il n'est pas encore fini.
PAPA : Fais voir ; ça doit être quelque chose de fameux !
Schachtner continue : Le papa le lui prit et me montra un gribouillage de notes dont la plupart étaient écrites par-dessus des taches d'encre effacées. Le petit Wolfgang, en effet, par ignorance, trempait sa plume jusqu'au fond de l'encrier ; une tache en résultait, mais il prenait vite sa décision, passait le plat de la main par-dessus, empâtait tout et recommençait à écrire de plus belle. Nous rîmes d'abord de ce qui paraissait être un galimatias, mais le papa porta ensuite son attention sur l'essentiel, c'est-à-dire sur les notes et la composition, et il resta longtemps immobile avec son attention fixée sur la feuille. Finalement, il laissa tomber deux larmes, larmes d’admiration et de joie. Voyez-vous, Monsieur Schachtner, me dit-il, comme tout est correct et régulier ; seulement, ce n'est pas jouable ; c'est si épouvantablement difficile que personne ne pourrait l'exécuter. - C'est pour ça que c'est un concerto ! interrompit le petit Wolfgang ; on doit s'exercer jusqu'à ce qu'on puisse y arriver, voyez-vous ; il faut que ça aille comme ça ! - Et il se mit à jouer, mais il ne pouvait en tirer que juste assez pour nous montrer où il voulait en venir. Il avait déjà dans son esprit la conception entière du concerto !
Nous n'avons plus cette printanière ébauche du genre où le génie de Mozart devait porter de si beaux fruits, mais il nous reste différentes adaptations en concerto de sonates par divers clavecinistes contemporains. Elles sont groupés de façon à former quatre concertos (Nos.1-4). C'étaient sans doute des exercices entrepris sous la direction paternelle.
C'est toujours avec un certain sentiment de révérence que nous nous approchons de l'œuvre d'art qui, sans être elle-même un chef d'œuvre, se trouve à la tête d'une série de chefs-d'œuvre. La première symphonie de Beethoven, le premier opéra de Wagner, la première tragédie de Racine ont beau avoir peu de valeur par eux-mêmes ; par leur position à l'entrée d'une voie où s'échelonnent de grandes œuvres, ils sont éclairés par une lumière réfléchie, et cela suffit pour les rendre vénérables. C'est avec un sentiment de révérence, de même, que nous abordons le commentaire des premiers concertos de Mozart. Ils sont peu de chose en comparaison de ceux qui les suivront ; ils sont néanmoins leurs aînés et, ne fût-ce que pour cela, ils ont droit à notre respect.

Le début, très personnel, est unique dans le concerto K.271, non seulement dans les concertos salzbourgeois, mais même dans tout Mozart. Les thèmes des deux premiers mouvements sont caractérisés et le milieu de l'allegro n'est Plus un épisode, mais un véritable développement thématique. La combinaison de l'orchestre et du solo redevient, par moments, intime, et dans certains passages nous pouvons nous croire revenus à l'époque du premier concerto. Tout l'andantino témoigne de cette indépendance. Il s'élève loin au-dessus des andantes des concertos précédents, et l'expression personnelle n'y fait aucune concession au goût du jour. Et même le final, bien que ce soit le mouvement le plus conventionnel des trois, révèle ce même souci de pensée personnelle par l’extrême liberté de sa structure, par son exubérance et par l’absence de toute virtuosité pure, dénuée de portée expressive.
Il est exagéré de prétendre que Mozart a atteint dans cette gentille œuvre le niveau des grandes compositions de 1784-1786. Cela n'est point ; la maturité de ces belles pages lui manque, et même l'andantino, pour émouvant qu'il soit, exprime une douleur plus juvénile, plus extérieure, que celle des andantes mineurs des années de Vienne. Mais c'est le premier en date de ses concertos pour piano qui puissent être exécuté en concert comme une grande oeuvre, et, est un jalon pour l'histoire du développement du jeune compositeur. Nous avons insisté sur son originalité, sur l'indépendance, l'arrogance même, vis-à-vis du public, dont il témoigne. C'est la première fois que Mozart se permet pareille liberté. Il ne la prendra d'ailleurs pas tous les jours. En 1777, il se sent sûr de lui. Mais d'ici peu, il partira pour Mannheim, puis pour Paris; il aura un nouveau public et d'autres goûts a concilier, et de nouveau il se soumettra à des exigences venues du dehors. Puis, à son retour à Salzbourg, il cherchera de nouveau à plaire à ceux dont il aura essayé en vain de se débarrasser ; enfin, à Vienne, il se trouvera dans la même situation qu'en France, et pendant quelque temps, il se pliera au goût de ce nouveau public. Ce n'est peut-être que sept ou huit ans plus tard, vers 1784, qu'il retrouvera pour de bon l’audace que la visite de la pianiste française lui avait fourni l’occasion de d’exprimer..

I began listening to classical music at age 12. I am now 95 and still listen every evening. After WW 2 when those terrible memories returned I turned to the classics and they never failed to help me calm down and relax. Thank you all who wrote such magnificently beautiful compositions and to those who have posted them for all to hear.

On listening to this piece of music I find myself being drawn into the another world where my soul could be liberated from this world.
Lord have mercy! Lili Kraus is marvelously inventive! I've listened to many great pianists play these pieces by Mozart (which I consider the greatest piano concertos ever written). Never have I heard better. Indeed, her readings are a blessing to me.

Concerto Mozart
Concertos 1-4 are arrangements Mozart made as a child to gain experience with the medium of a concerto with solo instrument and orchestra. Concerto #5 is his first authentic piano concerto. #7 is for 3 pianos, and #10 is for 2 pianos. The the remaining 21 concertos are astonishing even by Mozart's high standards.

As a viola player, I naturally gravitated to his Sinfonia Concertante and string quartets and quintets. I also played his Bassoon Concerto, on bassoon and viola (which I transcribed). Mozart's piano concertos are excellent, and added to my love of the person I consider the supreme genius of classical music (and there have been many geniuses). You can't beat Mozart!😀
