@@DuffTV ah thanks man. I’m just trying to put some info out there as I learn it. And I’m filming at a wedding today. It’s a great camera and that auto focus makes work so much easier.
Hey Alexander, I know in the manual for both the C80 and C400 it says that autofocus performance MAY be reduced in RAW recording format. Have you noticed any real world evidence of this?
@@MichaeltheDentist I haven’t filmed in anything but raw so far bc fcpx can’t support the xfavc files. But that may be true. However the AF is still remarkable.
@@AlexanderJawfox Awesome thank you so much for your reply; I just wanted to make sure the sensor has reasonably good AF in Raw :) I have the C80 on order, and I figure the results should be similar in terms of AF if its the same sensor. I plan to live in 6k Raw 23.98 fps
@@mattheword today I used the RF lens. 15-35 2.8, the 85 1.2, and the 24-105 which was on the c400 most of the day. The C70 had the 70-200 on it for tight shots of the bride. I did have an r5 mounted on the ronin too.
Is it possible to toggle Autofocus On and Off using the touchscreen while recording? I am familiar with the ability to toggle AF on and off using the mirrorless system in the R5 by pressing the AF button in the bottom left of the touchscreen. I'm wondering if that functionality exists within the C400. It is definitely a bummer that we don't have autofocus in the Slow and Fast recording modes. I think this is something that a lot of folks coming from the mirrorless world don't realize. Anything over 60fps doesn't include autofocus. The upsides of moving to this camera from something like an R5 are abundant and obvious, but the lack of autofocus in 120fps is a setback for sure. Especially for run and gun. Do you have any best practices for filming in Fast and Slow modes? You're the guy with the answers on TH-cam for this camera so I figured I'd throw these two autofocus questions your way. Thanks for the videos!! I pre-ordered a C400 from B&H in late August. Don't have it in hand just yet.
@@FlaggerLife you’ll probably be getting it soon. I pre ordered in June. You have the same controls on the touch screen. But I have a function button on my side handle that can lock AF and also turn on/off AF. It’s very convenient. Additionally, the joystick on the control handle can toggle between eye and face detect if you are trying to get focus in a crowd of people. You do have auto focus in the Slow and fast modes. I haven’t tried out 120fps yet but I know you do 60fps. It’s great too.
@@AlexanderJawfox Right, it works in slow and fast modes, but not above 60fps. B&H pointed me to page 92 of the manual where it says: "Continuous AF and one-shot AF will not work in the following cases: When the slow & fast motion recording shooting frame rate is set to an option other than 24P, 25P, 30P, 48P, 50P or 60P." So that's a bit of a bummer seeing as it's possible in the mirrorless cameras. But certainly not enough for me to cancel my pre-order.
@@AlexanderJawfox Also, thank you for the added information in your initial response! Super helpful! I subscribed. I'm hoping you continue to release content on this camera. It appears Griffen Conway is going all in on the C80 so it's great to have another resource for information on the C400. Cheers.
@@FlaggerLife sorry I missed this comment. I know that AF works in normal mode at 60fps. I filmed that cinematic montage in my previous video in slow and fast mode at 60fps and was on auto focus. I also just googled it to confirm it does. I’m not sure why they would say that.

I just got my C400. Since you have one too, maybe you can help me out. I'm trying to understand why I can't change the Focus Mode in the Camera Setup on my C400. I've tried with both the RF 24-105mm f/2.8 and the RF 24-70mm f/2.8, both Canon lenses. I keep getting the message 'Set with switch on lens side.' Is it not the AF/MF switch? I also get a similar message when I try to adjust the stabilization setting in the menu.
@@ubiquefilm4805 are you trying to take it out of continuous? I see in the fifth tab under the camera menu the option to turn that off along with the ability to manage the AF frame such as whole area or small zone.

Is it possible to compare the XF-AVC format in the Canon C70 camera and in the Canon C400 camera? Since the C70 has the same sensor as the Canon C300 Mark III. Congrats, I wonder why the larger bit rate in standard 10bit? Super sampling? I know you get the full sensor read out compressed down to 4k with it… Or is just because the extra megapixels vs the c70?
@@MrMoviePhoneEx I was wondering the same thing. I couldn’t find anything on that. On RAW HQ 6k 12bit on the c400 at 23.98 it shows 1730 mbps. Raw st 850mbps, and raw Lt 552 Mbps. When I drop down to XF-AVC 10 bit 4k it’s showing 480 mbps.
Makes sense. But in your vid, 10bit 422 all-I 60 was showing as 900 mb/s in XF AVC… I’m also coming from a c70 so my best guess the size jump comes from stepping up to FF vs s35, and the full sensor supper sampling of a much larger chip with over 2x the megapixels? What gets me though, v90 UHS II SD cards top out around 600 mb/s so what does that mean for FF XF AVC 60fps in the c80?
@@MrMoviePhoneEx yeah that’s why question any cinema style camera with sd cards. The c70 did surprise me with its internal recording capabilities but I never really filmed anything in raw. Just xfavc. But your bring up a good question I’d like to get an answer to.
