I was just watching this earlier today S3/E1-4; and thinking how interesting Earl Godwin was, and thought "later I'm going to research this guy on the internet". First check on TH-cam, and here is a new video, a nice synchronicity . Thank you for saving me some time and making it entertaining while so.
I feel Godwin was a much more momentous figure in history for the historic times he lived and participated in (just like his son, Herold). Warwich was an impressive and capable individual in his own right (guy wasn't called "Kingmaker" for giggles). But the stakes of the battles in Godwin's ers were much higher than in Warwicks time. A Civil war is VERY destructive, but PAILS in comparison to an foreign invasion force. William the conqueror IS the example
@@historyprofiles Damn right! You’re welcome lol I’m really amazed by the history of the Heptarchy and the various rulers of the kingdoms, how they interacted and the different dynamics at play. Earl Godwin was diplomatic and ambitious, and his house had an explosive rise to power in the aftermath of Canute's conquest. His wife Gytha was a daughter of Thorgil Sprakalegg who was a first cousin to Canute. At one point before the Norman takeover, Godwin's sons owned about half of England!
@@michaelmccomb2594 Gytha’s father was Thorgil and then his mother was Thyra, daughter of Harald Bluetooth. But you’re also right because Gytha’s brother Ulf was married to Estrid, who was a 1/2 sister of Cnut by Sweyn Forkbeard.
Took me 3 days to watch what with interruptions and all. But, well worth persevering. I knew most of it but this added many nuances I was unaware of. Thank You.
Great video!! I love this channel!! I learn so much!! I love background music. Benefiting this epic tales. Who created the music? Is it available to listening to on TH-cam? 🕯📖⚔️👑⚔️📖🕯
Very ironic, Edward wasn't exactly the best of kings, and Godwin was far too powerful and influential, the two were at logger heads often, even though edward was married to his daughter!
It seems that the common folk in Angl-Saxon England, and those in the Nordic countries were treated better by their respective ruling class than the feudal system of continantal Europe. Life was most definitely hard, in that age, but one wonders how England would have fared if not subjected to Norman rule. The story of King Edwards' Norman friends causing chaos in that coastal English town that brought about the rift between the king and Earl Godwin is fairly typical of Norman behavior after 1066.
Yes, once William took the throne the harrying of the north took place, Northumbria was put to the torch with 75% of its population perishing under Norman occupation
Please do Ulfcytel Snillingr = Viking invasions - and War of the Roses = Sir John Savage - Baron John Cheyne, Sir Robert Ogle = second Anglo Scoatish war - Sir Roger Mowbray = The Anarchy/Crusades.
The old videos on them were very brief and I thought I did a disservice to them by not making them detailed enough, recently I have been releasing longer vidoes as I think there better, so it was nice doing extra research on a character I already knew and thought could make video far surpassing the other, plus there arnt alot of deatils vidoes regarding Godwin on YT
I always considered it a shame that Godwin and his line didn’t overthrow Edward and take the throne themselves. It was only the Norman lords who propped up Edward’s kingship in the first place, and the House of Godwin would have changed the course of European history to this day.
What is the word you used right before Vikings? Something like Yung, Yong? Jung, Jong? The transcript says Yum’s Vikings, but that doesn’t sound right. Is this a place name? I just couldn’t catch it. Sorry, I’m American. Thanks

Am not sure I buy into this, sounds like stolen history considering, The gododdin tribe lived in what we know as Scotland today from east to west. Their main settlement on the current location of Edinburgh Castle today. An another settlements was North Berwick Law. The warriors were slane in battle around 600Ad! They were known as the men of Brittonic kingdom of Gododdin who rose to unite the Welsh and the Picts Against the Angles At one point Wales Dominated and ruled over the whole of England as far up to present day Edinburgh.
Vikings: Valhalla was such a disappointment for me. For reasons I can't even explain. Just...disappointing. Edit: In case there's some confusion...the thumbnail photo and actor (who is awesome, incidentally) is from that show.
@@Deebritts I thought I had read where they were going to go up through the Norman conquest. Obviously that didn’t happen. They had Harald Hardrada as a main character in the story and then they just didn’t show the thing that made him famous. And their friggin timeline isn’t even close to accurate. Leif Ericsson was dead by the time Harald was born. Edmund Ironside was an adult as opposed to the whiny inept teenager we got and he was a much better war leader than they showed. How do you think he got the name Ironside? I could go on like this for hours with that show.
@@jaredpenvenI think that’s what they were actually suppose to do but like I said the series they managed to fuck it all up with season 2 and now the series has been cancelled instead of getting 5-6 seasons which is really disappointing because season 1 was actually fairly good.
I know they should have had Cnut being raised in jomsborg and him as a young man, Edmund Ironside also in England as a young man both serious warriors. Also they should have included people like thorkell the tall and should have made the Jomsviking la a formidable mercenary order (berserkers and ulfhednar etc) Hardrada shouldn’t have been introduced until later as he was just being born when Cnut took England. So many things I could say, but would be writing forever, they already had a good script (real history) that’s why the show didn’t perform as well as it should …. So we won’t get more seasons They should really make a Vikings show but make it accurate
@@jaredpenvensame here could go on for hours Edmund they ruined, Jomsvikings were ruined, where was thorkell their leader? Why was the conquest of England so easy?? Why was Canute so old? He was meant to be in his mid 20s same as Edmund, that’s could have been season 1 Edmund v Canute, they already had a script! Real history which is better than what took place on screen
