Nice job. An i also said valves too lol. Nice catch too man. 😁👍
I did
@Swagg Director lol
It's called a muffler not a silencer. Silencers are only on 2 strokes
@@stephenblackstock1923 2 different names but dose the samething. Since you wanna be all technical lol.
21:34 Probably one of the best locking pistons i ever seen !
26:22 So the piston was about to crack in half...😂
- Good job on checking it further 👌
Love how you just rev the shit out of it and don’t let it warm up😂
its a 4 stroke baby..
@@Eugenia_Farms lmao my old quad started nocking i rev bombed the shit out it first start all i did was add oil lol is was good
Its going to be resold. Caveat emptor.
@@Cnzxco I was a little too quick to respond. Depending on the condition of the engine, you have to determine whether it can still be saved.
Warming up an engine quickly or not is multifold: a cast iron cylinder plays no role there, aluminum is more sensitive to temperature differences. If the engine is ready for scrap then ... it doesn't matter at all.
If you use the right oil from factory - I always use Amsoil - and maintain everything properly, then you simply have years of pleasure. Except for wear parts.

Love how he lifted the valve cover off and immediately turned it upside down and dumped a ton of dirt into the top end.
exactly, but these youtubers aren't mechanics otherwise they wouldn't be fumbling around guessing what's wrong,
Once you get this running good you should keep it. These quads are really reliable and it wouldn’t hurt having a reliable quad around. Plus there is tons of aftermarket parts for them.
Very true
Keep it for sure you'll never go wrong with a 400ex and holds it's own against most other quads
@@2vintage these are going the way of the Honda 250r in the future..def hold onto it if its clean enough to be worth it.. Rebuild it right and you will never be disappointed i bet my balls on it.
Honda is saving us with the 8mm instead of ten
When you snapped the bolt off I verbally "thats not good" in conjunction with you 😂
"Keep a close eye on the exhaust" then proceeds to unleash a smoke show of epic proportions! 😂
Penetrating fluid is your friend when taking out engine bolts.
Lol for sure when do rebuilds every bolt gets soaked the heated before I even try once
Aluminum and steel takes a special hand to remove for sure..and oil dosent always work..heat is your friend. Galvanic corrosion sucks
Hell even wd40, he loves that shit
@@benny8300 I mean why not to use a breaker bar is right in the name.
@@dillongreen1045 yep oxi torch it lol
In my opinion, it's always wise to pressure wash the crap off your engine before you take it apart so that sand and crap doesn't get inside.
If you want any of those parts vapor honed to look like new before you put it back together, bring it down, I will do it while you wait! As long as you are in there, replace Piston/rings, top end gaskets and valve seals. Light ball-hone of the cylinder would be a good idea as well.
Are you in wisconsin. If so i wouldnt mind bringing my 400 to you
@@haydensnider5966 yep, PM me.
Wow.... never seen such a great combo of smokyness issues, way to find it!!
I bought a quad that was burning loads off oil like yours and mine had snapped off the piston skirt your lucky you caught that before it got worse 👌
yeah it was very close! I got lucky
I put air in the tire and it's still smoking. weird lol
That’s how I feel watching half these videos...😂😂😂
Lol I already checked that...jkjkjk
Shut up
Good job on the diagnosis! A disaster waiting to happen...
I love watching good ole joe break bolts cause his reaction is like ohhh that’s suppose to happen
11:10 turns valve cover and pours dirt into engine. Me oh my
Dude shit was painful to watch
@@DanDan-xr4ke dude no kidding
Made me throw up
I would be giving that motor a very good cleaning after that one
If you watch closely you can see it never actually went into the motor. But yeah not good! I thought it was cleaner haha
Love that you got a 400ex i just got one myself and had to rebuild it!! Thank you for helping me out!
Clean the dirt off before you start so it doesn’t end up in the motor 👍
I tried. Must not have gotten all of it haha
2vintage i use a brush gets all the dry stuff off 👍
I cringed a little when he tipped the valve cover over.
17fresh 🤣 all the dry dirt tipping off it 🤣
A power washer works really well for cleaning off dirt and grime
Holy crap Joe it's a good thing you caught it that could have been literally catastrophic failure. That will definitely cause some blow by.
Wiseco piston kit👌🏻👌🏻
Great work Joe! Lesson learned to inspect everything! Twice!! 😂 so diagnosis is she was ran hard with probably little to no oil over time, piston got so hot it almost exploded, thank god honda parts are strong! Can’t wait to see it back together! Again, great work 👍
@23 seconds,does it have a drinking problem too?😂😂😂
Excellent to see you getting deeper for a diagnosis. Be it half-assed but I think you are starting to pick the concept up. Just wow, I don't know where to start I mean holy shit. It's like I said kid you will need a new top-end kit and a new bottom end kit at a minimum. I honestly hope that you don't think any of those parts are reusable. I think you got in over your head on this one, more so than before. Whoever suggested that removing the air filter would be a cure is on your level of knowledge. Possibly lower.
The seating surfaces of the rings is what tells the condition and it takes a microscope to check them. Glad you found the damage to the piston before it shattered. I also have a feeling the rings were probably fine. I didn't see evidence of blow by, which leaves it's mark on the piston skirt. The valve guides and seals are my suspected problem area. New seals will help, even if the guides are worn. You can but an inexpensive tool to knurl the insides of the valve guides and bring them back into speck, if needed. Nice work!
It’s a really good practice to thoroughly clean the whole bike before working on it, Dort in the wrong place can cause big problems
I always place the ring into the cylinder and use the piston to push it down a bit and mainly to place it into the correct position for measuring the end gap. This places the ring straight as apposed to crooked in the cylinder which could affect the measurement.
I had the exact same problem with the bolts breaking off on the valve cover on my 400ex when I rebuilt it i feel your pain lol!
Dude I have never even thought of using a handlebar as breaker bar😂 your a genius 😂
You've broken it down so far that you may as well replace the rings. Its easy to do now while its already apart. No sense in putting the old ones back in just to find out later that you should have replaced them. Easy and cheap enough to just go ahead and replace them. That's what I always do.
He's pulled 3 of these apart but still acts like it's his first time ever lol but hey he's doing it and still using handle bars as a breaker bar 😂 I'm dead
Nice going ! You dumped sand in your top end when you took the cover off. 😱
Soak the broken bolts then drill them and use an ease out.
Nice to see u pulling engines apart n not just doing a carb clean n flogging them
People here looking for advice, please whenever working on you quad/bike clean prior to disassembly. Things can't be to clean.
Rite on . I cringed when he tipped the valve cover over
You've gone that far, just do it all! It's a nice quad! Good catch
Boy that's a lot of work I hope that thing runs even better when you get done.
I could see shiny top of the crown of the piston, witch tells me you need a bore job , the piston broke from rocking back an forth in the bore , measure the cylinder you will see it needs bored at least 0.10
A hundred over? Hf
@@georgeduckworth4452 0.010 must be measured first for out of round
@@chevyhp right for sure I could see that radius edge on the top of cylinder
1 mm that would make i a 406cc not a 397 any more maybe .01
your lucky man. so glad you found that crack .. life saver
You've come a long way Joe. You really know your stuff with small engines. Great job finding the problem
Great diagnostics...glad you figured it out before it grenaded.
The reason the skirt cracked is because the piston is rocking around as it goes up and down in the cylinder you need to either get a new cylinder or have this one machined to the next size. Please listen to the comments on this one I've seen a couple other guys mention it you're going to ruin a new piston and possibly your whole motor if you throw a new piston in the old cylinder.
This guy is a squid. Dont waste your breath
Pulls valve cover of and immediately dumps 3 table spoons of dirt into the motor. 🤦♂️
😂
😭😭
When all bolts come loose it’s so satisfying!😍
aluminum expands when it heats up and holds to the threads on the bolts so those head cover bolts probably wouldn't have snapped if you hadn't warmed it up first...ask me how I know lol
Haha yeah now I know for next time lol
Gotta love the old honda. 21 years old with an untouched origional engine.
Did you relise that when you took the valve cover of you got allot of dust and sand in in the valves
It never actually went into the valves. It went towards the right of the motor. It was close haha
There used to be a tool for cars that would allow you to use compressed air via the spark plug hole to hold the valve in pace while another tool would compress the valve spring to allow you to replace the valve seal without removing the head.
1. Compression ring
2. Oil scraper ring
3. Oil spreader ring(s)
I'd get a Wiseco piston kit with the 11:1 compression ratio it really gives it more pep and its quality parts
you might want to measure the cylinder to determine whether it is worn too much to use a standard size piston. You may need to bore the cylinder
Relap and seat the valves, valve stem seals, new piston and rings, new hard ware and gaskets hone the cylinder and ckeck the coneckting rod for any up and down play
Michael Biel
This is exactly what he SHOULD do👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼.., but he'll not 🤷🏻♂️
Just a tip for ur stuck bolts, always hand loosen them first, less likely to snap👍🛌
Looked like someone was checking for TDC and scratched the piston crown with a flathead screwdriver lol.
a trick a old mechanic taught me is if a bolt (mainly on manifolds but its pretty universal), ever hangs up, run it back down, then back it out again. sort of work in back and fourth like a tap.
and of course, use plenty of lubricant while doing so.
I appreciate the content.
Josh should of ran the engine up to temp to give you a easier chance of braking the bolts out lot easier when the engine is hot or let them soak in penetrating fluid overnight 👍🏻
Good work thow brother
I love binge watching your videos
Nice catch. Go 440 kit i had 1 with full pipe white brothers dont remember header but that thing would scream too. An i don't remember the jets but I loved that bike.
No it will blow a top end every month
@@nrtmouse8673 I didnt have a problem with it. I checked my stuff before each ride so I would catch the bolts coming lose or see it ect..
@@ronniewilliz153 huh
@@nrtmouse8673 Do you look over your bike before you ride it each time or even every so offten ?
@@ronniewilliz153 its a 2019 so a liitle
Wouldn’t hurt to replace the valve seals still, could still be worn out
yep i already ordered them
@@2vintage right on cool! cant wait to see the install of it all, nothing beats installing new parts :)
2vintage I have the same problem mine smokes when accelerates but it power wheelies in first and has good power where did you buy the valve seals and how much did they cost if you can help me out that would be great
your timing chain also shouldn't slip off the sprocket, even if the tensioner is off completely. This specific setup is designed to have the two hex head bolts removed from the sprocket, and the cam slid out of the sprocket, so the timing chain in this video is shot (:
Awesome video I recently bought a 04 400ex as a side project
Good find on the piston 2vinage
Do you ever do trail riding like out of town? It would be cool to do a video on your favorite fixed machine.
Everybody tried to tell ya and you keep riding it lol glad your rebuilding it tho get a fresh pipe for it make it run and sound sick
Have a trick way to remove the valve retainers. Hold a spark plug socket on the valve spring retainer and strike it with a no bounce or heavy hammer. The retaining clips will fly off and the socket will keep them from getting lost. Quick and easy. You'll need the valve spring compressor to re instal them.
Good video and good find !
Well I mean at least you got it fixed instead of spending much of money for oil lol
Why did you pull off the cover and then dump all that dirt INSIDE your engine?
I'm wondering the same thing, is it a performance mod?, asking for a friend
By accident lol. I cleaned it off before, that dirt was leftover.
@@2vintage clean the quad and motor thoroughly after you remove Plastics
You spray wd40 on absolutely everything, yet the one day you need to start using the stuff you don’t use it😀
I've had good luck with PB blaster as a penetrant but excellent point.
🤔
Cost limitations
Your a good mechanic man 💯
Man I learn so much from your videos
Piston cracked from reving or riding it while it's cold
Good video man I like these videos
Hone the cylinder, clean valves, replace seals and gaskets, new pistons and rings, she'll run like a champ, also I would check ur rod for up and down play, it's always normal to have to a little side to side play, but if u have up and down play on The rod, then ur rod bearing is going out
I’ve been watching your videos sense the time where you would draw a picture of the bikes you were riding that video or aka motovlog anyway keep up the great content
Either way you don’t want a chip or anything on side or top but if I was going down that far I’d definitely rebuild it
Big mistake-opening engine with out cleaning first 😢 10:57 just take a look how much sand got in to.
Hey bud I love your vids man I'm just helping ya out I'm not criticizing ya when I say this but that pin you said was for the decompression was actually a oil passage to lubricate the camshaft I just figured you'd wanna know
Like the quad
That snipe tho lmao love it hahaha
i love projects bro especially yours
My honest opinion Joe I think between the carbon buildup on the valve and valve guide seals is with the problem for the Smoky engine I have a 05 Polaris Predator 500 and I just did the whole valve train last weekend I replace the timing chain the kid I bought it from I would like to bring him by his neck I got ripped off it was the first quad I was buying and not expecting any problems
Quick question. The carb mount to the engine. The rubber piece. Mine came off. Is it glued or what. And if so glued what kind of glue
You are an absolute beast !!! Awesome videos !!!
Hi 2 vintage your videos are great was it maybe not over fueling
Nice I hope you resolve the issue cheers bro
Glad you found out sooner then later verry lucky
Valve spring retainer is the word your looking for and not sure but looks like the intake valve has lash caps aswell
Look at that juicy piston 😂
If bolts are tight like the ones you broke work them back and forth slowly until they come out. you could've gotten the out with out breaking them
This whole time I was thinking it was a head gasket that was the problem👍. Great video!!!! 💯🔥
Hi. U should always clean these motors if u take them apart.
question do you have a lisp
Always clean the engine before working on it. Nothing I hate more than working on a dirty engine
Drop a CR500 engine in it and really make some smoke! 👍👍👍
Rebuild 101 clean engine before starting
Replace piston, replace all rings, new gaskets, clean and lap valves while you have the head off. BTW valves don't have seals.. When closed they seal against another surface. Sometimes when valves aren't adjusted correctly carbon builds up on this surface and prevents valves from fully closing. Lapping will clean this surface and ensure valve closure when adjusted.
He meant valve guide seals they are what keeps oil from running past valve
The exhaust valves are not supposed to seat down in like the intake valves has to do with overheating due to friction through contact you do have buildup but just replace the seals and give them a light laping will some valve grinding compound
Great content dude very informative
