This was a good one. That's why the plug was black because of the broken spring the gas wasn't shutting off with the float level so it basically was flooding itself while it was running. First thing that popped into my mind though was intake valve or coil
Another machine fixed! Nice job. These are great machines. I still have a 99 400EX and I'm glad I do because they're bulletproof and the price of a new machine these days is through the roof!

Idk about rare but prices up there but most clapped for price if its a good deal yeah fix it up better than buying from some guy thinking it’s going to work good but you still have to pay the high prices better off fixing it your self and save some money

My 400ex did the same thing! I got rid of it after not being able to trouble shoot it myself. Neat to know now what was most likely the issue. I wonder how many people have experienced that same issue..
I had an old warrior that did the same thing..I bought it from a guy that couldn’t figure it out..I finally figured out the little clip positions on the needle was worn out and the needle was jumping up and down..I rebuilt the carb and it was mint
Yess sir love these trx 400 quads. I bet you you fix it in les than 2 videos they are build really good just like them xr400 bikes. Got 2 of those in the build series right now.

Ford Performance I took the filter completely off to make sure it was not the problem and even sprayed a bit of starting fluid with upper lubricant to see if it would last longer than a sec but nope ...thinking it’s cdi I fried some wires and repaired them

I watched a video of yours on a Honda TRX 500 foreman rubicon four-wheel quad it helped me with my o yeah the year is 2004 thank you so much it shifts. It bogs in fith gear still if you may know what I need to do to fix it? I do my own work on my quad I'm been learning from you thanks so much❤
I noticed that when you pulled the fuel screw, no o ring came out.. on some of my bikes the O-ring gets stuck, and sometimes there's 2 O-rings inside.. which makes it run really rich.
I have Honda NX400 Falcon and always issues in Carb timing adjuster chain, clutch!!. Why they make this things soooo complicated? Mechanics nightmare and they don't wanna know If they touch it a lot of money and plus you can not find parts easly!! After all, just that f^n needle! What a patience!! Well done young man! If the guy that couldn't get the bike running tells you he cleaned and checked the carb he obviously doesn't know what he's doing and that's the only thing he checked and cleaned so I'd start with what the clueless guy touched not to mention it the most likely thing to check when you're experiencing running issues

This was a great video. Even though it wasn’t a electrical problem it was a excellent step by step. I just had my daughter’s blaster have a problem that I was almost positive was electrical but it was carb.
My 400EX is a hot mess. But I love the thing. I keep putting oil in it but I just don't know where it goes after a couple of rides. And I don't see any oil coming out
Sounds like the pilot jet incorrect air fuel mixture. You changed the main jet but that only works for 1/4 to 3/4 throttle the needle 3/4 to full throttle. The pilot jet works from nothing to 1/4 throttle. If you're getting a little bit of flutter on the bottom of giving that throttle it's got something to do with the pilot jet or the mixture screw.
Hi I have a question just bought a 2002 Honda TRX 400ex runs but stalls out on idle cleaned the carburetor and running 38 pilot jet and 168 main . Only idles for 10 minutes than cuts out

Hey man I have a question the last person who had the 400ex before me lowered the front suspension and I’m new to quads and I don’t know how to get it back up to normal size
So I’m having the same problem will look into mine but other problem I have after I got it running was I went for a ride was doing fine on 1,2 got to 3rd and was trying to go faster but it boggle and shut down on me it will water back up after 3 minutes tho
My Kawasaki kfx 400 was kinda acting like that and where the exhaust headpipe connected to the muffler that gasket or seal was gone changed it and bam just like new
It's carburetor all day long I know I'm responding days later but I would have switched out the carburetor for one of your known good ones and your problem would have been solved within 5 minutes first time you took the plug out you could if it's black looking on it

I did a valve adjustment now it has blue smoke after throttle

Be sure to re adjusted the valves for the hot cam specs. When I did a hotcams on my 400 I had to adjust them a little higher than factory settings

I was thinking on the intake boot a crack - air leaking. But after watching your video and the carb was the problem. Wow great troubleshooting.

I had a four wheeler with the same problem and it was a wire that shorted out for the engine braking system

I have a 37yo Honda VF1100 haven't had a valve adjustment in years it runs great.

I’m stumped right now in a crf 250 it starts up for a second and shuts back off it ain’t a fuel delivery problem and also I have consistent spark
check ur air filter. once it gets suction it might be collapsing the filter and shutting off

Over rich (black soot) told you a story right there with the spark plug. Fuel/air related.

I've seen that issue on 250ea trikes, a little lube in that shaft opposite of the spring should help it. It might be a little worn out in there.

Think I'd check stator continuity right off, could be malfunctioning from the signal eye.
Same thing happened to mine rebuilt the carb many times and it still didn't work. Put a new carb on it and it ran beautifully.

The round plastic peice i the carb wasn't off when you opened it sideways it came off
Check Cdi Box or coil my ltz 400 ran like crap when it was hot till i changed the CDI box

Check the exhaust header where it goes into the muffler
Please tell me where you keep finding these 400exs
Take that scope when you’re looking at buying anything mechanical
Also you have to tune those carburetors they're very finicky especially when putting pipes on it and stuff
It's a jet problem
Or valve seals
edelbrock used to make a great replacement carb for these. i used one on my mx 426ex back in the day.

It seemed like the spark wasn’t sparking everything which was weird
The air cut off valve could be suspect.
