I carried a 5906 on duty for 15 years. It actually saved my life. Had a guy trying to take it from me. I dropped the magazine making it unable to fire. And he ended up with his head split open. Absolutely awesome guns .

nice collection my friend!! Also its worth to note that the plastic grips that can be found with the straight backstrap, or the curved, is a cool fearure that other manufacturers came out with about 20 years later. Also the higher capacity 59xx magazines will also function with the smaller 69xx pistols. Plus, you can hardly find another pistol that has a quicker trigger reset for follow up shots!! Awesome pistols!!

I’m finding the 4506&4506-1 for around $700 here in 2023. I’m looking to purchase one. Gotta have that big ole hunk of steel. I have the 5906 and I love it. Actually finding a lot of aftermarket parts for these old guns.

Love these 3rd Gen S&W. I have carried one for many years while they were in production. They were being issued to law enforcement in California where I lived at the time. Now they are collectible. I am the original owner of several of them and have started to collect them. They are still one of my carry platforms depending on my dress that day. Nice presentation.
I trained with these platforms at a school owned and run by law enforcement

I conceal carry a S&W 6904 and a CZ p01. S&W 3rd are great guns for the money. The 6904 has a shorter 12 round double stack, but takes all the other 5900 series double stack mags. I got two 17 round 5900 series mec gar backup mags. If anyone was wondering the CZ P01 is just a bit bigger than the 6904. Kinda like between the size of a CZp01 and a CZ Rami . just a hair bigger than a Rami. A P01 omega is 28.5 oz, a rami weights 25.9 oz and the SW 6904 is at 26.5 oz.

As much as I like the S&W third generation pistols, my heart is with the second generation pistols. The biggest change between the second and third generation pistols is in the grips. S&W found that putting integral grips on its guns was too expensive. So it made the plastic snap-on grips (which was fine) and later it added black hammers and triggers, which were substantially less expensive than the hard chromed hammers/triggers (which was _not_ fine).
Some cost-cutting measures are okay, and S&W was fighting a losing battle in trying to produce a steel gun at affordable price. Today, the cost of producing a steel gun is prohibitive. Look at the cost of 1911 pistols. To get a 1911 that doesn't jam costs well over a grand, and if you're just looking for a gun to put in your reset dresser drawer or use for defense, the S&W 2nd/3rd pistols are much better quality guns.
I've got a S&W 659 and a 5906, and I like the 659 much better. The front sight is part of the slide and it's got screws and grip panels. The 5906 makes it I'll-advised to ever remove the grips, and I like that, but I also like being able to use Pachmayrs and other grips.

I enjoyed and appreciated your video and deeply admire that collection. However, being a S&W fan for decades, please allow me to offer a correction. The large frame pistols first developed for second generation were not based upon a 1911. The 2nd generation large frame semiautomatic pistols were based upon the original 9mm model 39. The entire line was expanded and upgraded to produce second generation which were all designated with three digits to describe model type and construction materials. These second generation pistols were easily distinguished from first generation by the deletion of the removable barrel bushing. Not long afterward, the third generation pistols evolved to include major renovations of the frames and the use of one piece grips. The introduction of the Sigma pistol heralded the end of this lineage of Smith and Wesson original design pistols.
