Thor: Ragnarok in 2017 completely reinvented the God of Thunder, who, after Thor: The Dark World- many thought had become a pretty boring character. Since Ragnarok was such a hit, it seems like Taiki Waititi was given free reign to do whatever he wanted for the sequel 5 years later.
Thor: Love and Thunder raises a lot of questions though. Like did Thor Odinson get dumber? How many times are these goats going to scream? Can we see Gorr the God Butcher butcher some gods sometime? Was that Guardians of the Galaxy tease in Endgame really just for the intro of this movie? If Gorr thought all gods only cared about themselves, why did he assume they would rescue children?
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the Pitch Meeting that led to Thor: Love and Thunder! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

The point about Gorr kidnapping the kids to get the gods to come despite believing gods don't care about anyone else is a really solid one.

I disagree actually. The point Gorr makes is that gods don't care about mortals (which is further established by Zeus' unwillingness to help Thor) but it's only reasonable that gods would seek to save their own children - in fact, I bet Zeus would try to save his children if they were in danger, even if he was only motivated by his narcissistic desire to be worshiped.
Thing is, Gorr's point is that gods only care when they're the ones at risk of losing everything.

@@EventualWarlord I disagree. It’s like how Thanos presented himself as a noble crusader seeking to save the Universe from itself rather than the sadistic madman that everyone thought he was but in Endgame when he decided to destroy the entire Universe and admitted he would enjoy himself as he did so it would become clear to us in the audience that beneath his glamour he was the same thug that The Heroes all viewed him as being. So too with Gorr, his grief and vengeance led him to becoming a deicidal maniac but he knows that that the gods he battles care more than he’d like to admit he’s just in denial about it

Thor peaked in Infinity War. I still remember the crowd screaming in the theatre when he arrived in Wakanda with Stormbreaker. THAT is the Thor we want to see. A powerful hero who overcomes adversity and continues to do what is right depite everything that he has lost. Not a bumbling cartoon meathead. You can have humor with Thor but not at the expense of the character himself. Too much humor and it becomes a parady, not a performance.

    • @CM-pf1xc
      @CM-pf1xc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +67

I liked his struggle in endgame. And the continuation of all that in Thor 4! now it’s the aftermath and picking up of all that. Character DOES change, he’s having to pick apart and rebuild himself after everything, in this way, the crazy and inconsistent character makes more sense. AND the ending he Does relearn to do what’s right no matter what-with the adoption-learning to love after loss, to preserve, to show up, to stick with ppl. I think that’s pretty darn good characterization! I just think there weee some failures with execution (too many scenes with thor acting silly)

@@CM-pf1xc I agree that characters beliefs and personalities can change. However characters don't normally become dumber. They made Thor way too dumb in this one. I'm not saying he needs to be Banner level smart. But he certainly shouldn't be Drax level stupid either. I don't know why they cranked the humor to 11. Ragnarok was more balanced with the humor and drama. This one was just too much of a comedy and many of the jokes didn't really land. I'm happy you liked the film. I didn't hate it. But I certainly didn't love it either.

Seriously Gorr is easily one of the coolest villains I've seen in a long time. I wish the movie even attempted to try and tell the God Butcher story just so people who don't check out comics could experience it. Shit, they didn't even try to make bale look even slightly like Gorr. They weren't even trying.

Like, every god we saw was pretty much horrible to the people who worshipped them - even Thor, who we saw harm a civilization he was "saving" in a self-servingly cool way. Thor himself even fakeout-killed the King of the Gods for being indifferent to suffering - THE EXACT SAME THING GORR WAS DOING - and got a hero moment for it. It's bad script writing. Pulling special powers out of your backside at the 9th hour to save the day is a quick way to make people check out.
And the first question people ask is "Why didn't you do that earlier?"
A good writer would have provided a way for the children to gain his abilities, which explained where this new ability came from, and why it wasn't getting used again.
Why not have the chunks of Mjolnir be the empowering factor. Each kid gets a chunk of the hammer allowing the kids to have the power of Thor to lesser degrees. Have Mjolnir repair itself afterwards to explain why he doesn't do it again.
Now that it's whole once more it can't spread to multiple, and have the "worthy" requirement kick in once more.
Why didn't you use it before? Because before it was broken you had to be worthy.
Why don't you use it after now? Because it's back to one piece and you have the worthy requirement again.

As someone who has always felt that _Thor: Ragnarok_ was a bit too jokey, I am not surprised in the even more excessive direction this movie took. That said, to be fair to Mr. Waititi, I also feel like the (overly) comedic tone of _Thor: Ragnarok_ got royally screwed over by coming *right* before the relative utter dourness of _Infinity War_ especially with that stinger at the end that completely fucks over everyone in that movie. Thor never gets on-screen time to process the grief of losing his father for good, intentionally blowing up his homeland where he's lived for literal centuries for good, *or* the death of three--four?--of his closest friends before his brother, his best friend, *and* half of the people he *just* "saved" also get slaughtered anyway by time the next movie starts.
It feels like we've never gotten to see any serious side to Thor for a sustained period of time since the not-great _Age of Ultron_ outside of the relatively brief wallowing in depression he did in _Endgame_ (which was largely *still* treated as an extended [fat] joke) before going back in time. It's just made his character super jarring and same-y compared to what he used to be. Oh well. This is part of why I decided to be done with the MCU after _Endgame_ since that "wrapped things" up anyway.

Maybe show a flashback of him sharing his powers with someone who abused them which made him unwilling to trust anyone else with the powers again, and that's part of why he became such a self-centered jerk who didn't work well with others for so many centuries.

Yeah... the bit with the children at the end gave me very mixed feelings. Back when I was a child myself I would have absolutely loved it, the ultimate power fantasy of being not only recognized by my hero, but getting to fight alongside them. As an adult, however, it felt way too much like Thor deliberately endangering the people who he should ostensibly have been there to save.
To work the scene really needed to be staged differently. Thor need to at least try telling the kids to run or hide. It shouldn't have been Thor's idea to have the kids scrounge up whatever weapons they could find, it should be something the kids do on their own initiative. Thor shouldn't be the one giving the rousing speech, he should be getting his ass kicked. It needed to be the kids then that step forward and declare for themselves that as Asgardians they can't back down, and then Thor can grant them the power to fight by his side.
...or maybe it shouldn't have been Thor granting them powers at all. Maybe Jane should have shown up first, fight her hardest, but when she falls and the shards of Mjölnir scatter, each of the children would pick up a piece and in doing so empower themselves.

I had 2 major complaints about this movie:
    1. Sif can't go to Valhalla because she would've died from her wounds AFTER the battle itself, but Jane goes to Valhalla despite dying of her wounds AFTER the battle itself?
    2. Taika Waititi CLEARLY knows how to direct drama, the dramatic scenes in the movie hit HARD. He should've gone more with that.

Also cancer shouldnt be really a problem when they could just go to any futuristic planet at any time to get proper treatment, or to wakanda where they could heal a spine shot under a few hours, or to ask help from the many wizards and withces around, or to use that serum that grows back your limbs out from thin air from iron man 3.

This is comic book syndrome. Marvel cannot allow advancing tech and alien contact change the world to an unrecognizable state as it gets a lot of free emotional attachment and story telling opportunities by setting the stories in a world that is our own except has super heros.
Even though Mr. Fantastic and Stark keep coming up with and presumably selling revolutionary tech. You rarely see that tech being applied in everyday life. Save for in some of the comics staring kids. Ms Marvel's science fair team submitted a giant floating water bubble with a shark inside using tech in high-school.
Yet most of the cars remain the same gas powered ones, cellphones keep pace with our own cellphone tech unless someone special gives you one with a projector. Etc etc.

I really wish I could have enjoyed this movie more. I honestly tried. But it was impossible not to compare this film to the AMAZING run by Jason Aaron - a run that defined Thor for me. The tonal shift from the source media to this was too jarring. I understand Taika's approach but I truly felt like this movie was for small children... If you told me that "Gorr the God Butcher" storyline from the comics was going to be made into a MCU project but for kids aged 12 and under, I would have said it was impossible. The story is too dark, too mature, and TOO DAMN GOOD to be toyed with... I was wrong... As a huge Marvel nerd - I just hope with time, I accept this movie more and more!
