Roy Clark sadly is no longer with us, but he could play pretty much anything with strings though he was best known as a singer. He was a legend in country music and he co-hosted, with Buck Owens, the old TV show, Hee-haw for about 20 years. Hee-haw was on CBS from 1969 to 1971 and then was in syndication from 1971 to 1993. Two of Roy's biggest hits as a singer were, "Thank God and Greyhound She's Gone" and "Yesterday When I was Young". Thank you for your reaction to this song. BTW, you probably noticed that this performance was LIVE. No retakes. No "tweaking" by a sound mixer back in the studio. No autotune. Just years and years and years of practice!

By the way, it is pronounced MAHLA GAIN YA. Or close enough. The style is called Flamenco, like the dance. When he slaps the guitar he is emulating the dancers heels as the do the hard tap type where the Spanish dancers fling the very colorful skirts. Beautiful dance and beautiful song. Roy Clark is the greatest guitar player to ever exist on this planet. It's hard to tell on the video, but I think this is a version with a 12 string guitar. This song is known as being very hard to play. Roy plays it on the hardest guitar to play on. He was amazing, but flew under the radar, because he never sought out the spotlight. Ma-la-GWEN-ya - we didn't play it quite like this, but our high school marching band played this as a field show. I loved this song when we played it.

Most guitarists finger pick 'Malaguena'. And hate anyone that would use a pick to play it with.
    It drives them nuts.
Use you heard(seen) played by finger picking you'll see what i mean.

Roy Clark was a Nashville player, and mostly played on country records and hung out with other Nashville country musicians. And his roots are very much in country music. But like most musicians, they start playing because they love one genre, but then as they get good, they get interested in other genres more. So Roy Clark was really more of a Spanish flamenco player.
Just like Chet Atkins, who started out in Nashville country and hung out with country players, became more of a jazz player.
Genre is fluid, and not well defined (nor should it be).

Just recently subscribed and I really like your reactions. One thing though, all your reactions I've watched are backwards. Roy Clark was a musical genius mainly in Country Music but he can play anything. Keep up the great work.

I know you like "story" songs. Here's a wild one for you: "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" by Meat Loaf.

You should hear Dolly Parton's version of "House of the Rising Sun" with a smokey atmosphere and a low-cut red dress. First line, " There is a house in New Orleans, down in the Bocare, a house they call the Rising Sun where love and money are made."

In Spanish there are a few words with diphthongs. Malagueña is one of them. So it would be ma-la-GAY-nya.
