That was Eddie Van Halen who said that.
However, when Dick Cavett asked Jimi Hendrix who his favorite guitarist to listen to was, Jimi said it was Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top.

I've read that Roy was nervous performing early in his career, and he used the humor to help with that. He was a genius with guitar. And the fiddle, the banjo, the mandolin... as well as several other instruments.

We usually look at rock artists when looking for the greatest guitarists, but Roy Clark was as good as any of them and I mean ANY of them. The guy was a genius with the guitar, banjo and a few other instruments. And he was extremely funny.
You weren't looking but he played it against the microphone stand too.

Luther, was Johnny Cash's lead guitarist, who came up with the tempo, for Folsom Prison Blues, written by and performed first. Roy Clark added the fun parts himself. There is a video of Johnny and Roy performing the song together.

"Folsom Prison Blues" was one of Johnny Cash's signature songs, The Luther that Roy keeps saying is for Luther Perkins who was the lead guitarist of Tennessee Three Johnny Cash's band. There is a video of Roy playing this song along with Johnny on The Johnny Cash show, in which he does some even more outrageous stuff with the guitar. You asked if Roy was a comedian, I prefer to say Roy was an entertainer, he did what ever he needed to do to entertain his audience.

Great reaction. Roy Clark is hard to categorize. A good singer, a funny comedian, and a master at any stringed instrument. Mostly he played guitar, banjo, and fiddle. Some background on this song. Johnny Cash had it out as a big hit. I always thought Luther refered to Johnny Cash's friend and guitar player Luther Perkins. Some other songs by Roy Clark:
    Instrumental:
    12th Street Rag
    Malaguena
    Duelin' Banjos
    Under The Double Eagle
    Singing:
    Thank God and Greyhound
    Yesterday When I Was Young
    Orange Blossom Special
I will also mention that he was on the TV show Hee Haw from 1969-1992 (the show ran until 1997). So again I come back to him as an all around entertainer.

I absolutely loved Roy Clark. He seemed like such a wonderful man. He was married only once since 1957 and they had 5 children. He could play anything with strings but he had a song called YESTERDAY WHEN I WAS YOUNG that is in my top favorite songs of all time. You really need to listen to the words to understand and/or appreciate the song. If you choose to react to it, maybe just react to the audio because the live versions I found were when he was much older and he, imo, didn't sing it as well and talked it more than sang it.

Luther is Luther Perkins. He was Johnny Cash's guitarist and the creator of the guitar portion of folsom prison blues, but was also personal friends with roy clark. Luther tragically died in a fire due to falling asleep with a lit cigarette in his hand. Roy kept his legacy alive by doing this song.

First, you are a beautiful young lady with a delightful personality. I hope your hubby treats you like a queen. To the video... Roy Clark was a massive celebrity in his day. He hosted a show with Buck Owen called Hee Haw back in the 70s. It was a country hick (not an insult) comedy/music series. My dad loved it, and so did I. So yes, Roy Clark was a bit of a comedian and was famous for adding comedy to his music routines on stage. He was also a good country music vocalist. That aside, his guitar 🎸 playing is legendary. Not just for fooling around, but serious music. Any all-time great guitarist list that doesn't have Roy Clark in the top is incomplete. He simply is a master. He can play anything with strings. His banjo and fiddle playing is also legendary.

I recall watching him on our old black-and-white tv when I was a kid. We didn’t like the show “He-Haw” with its imbecilic humor, but when Roy Clark was playing it made it worthwhile to endure. The thing is he is a master player of string instruments, I've seen him live before in around 1983 here on campus in my hometown. He's just incredible and he used to be on that show Hee-Haw a lot when I was a kid. He didn't really show any of that off here at all. He was just having fun but yeah that guy is mind-blowingly good. And the reason he could mess around like that so much is because everybody was already super familiar with the song, because it was a massively huge hit for Johnny Cash around that time. Johnny Cash did actually two entire live albums at different prisons, Folsom Prison and San Quentin.

It takes decades and decades of practice to play the guitar while doing comedy at the same time while also playing the notes in a manner thats not the traditional way(back of hand, leg, mic stand etc etc) and doing so flawlessly without effort.
He did a special appearance on a TV show back in the 1970s and he demonstrated his skills to the audience. I don't recall the name of the show but if you truly want to see how good he was without it being comedic search for ROY CLARK GUITAR WIZARD and you will find the video I am referring to.

Roy wasn't a comedian per se. But, he did like injecting some comedy in his performances. All of his peers knew how good of a player, of all stringed instruments, he was. He just never felt the need to seek out the spotlight. With his show, Hee Haw, he really enjoyed finding child prodigies and let them preform on the show. He really was an amazing person. Not that you should do a bunch of videos on him, but at least do yourself a favor by searching more videos of him. The last two generations have the conception that making loud, distorted sounds come out of a guitar, is what makes a good player. The reality is that Roy, in his quiet little way, knew his way around the strings better than anyone else.

The label you are looking for is Showman. Roy Clark was a well rounded entertainer and a master of any stringed instrument.

He was known for joking around, but it's no joke that he was an absolute master musician of the highest order. This guy could play more than one instrument with the very best of them.

Luther is Luther Perkins; he played guitar with Johnny Cash. Roy Clark is doing his comedic take on Johnny Cash and Luther Perkins performing their Folsom Prison Blues hit.

Roy was incredibly talented as a musician...and a comedian! His friends said he could play anything with strings, and that certainly included banjo. His career was devoted to country music and down-home cornball country humor, and his combination of talents made Roy a natural host for the TV show "Hee-Haw." Check out Roy and Buck Trent's "dueling banjos" on this segment of Hee-Haw: th-cam.com/video/47NPOkNqANQ/w-d-xo.html (video quality's not the best, but audio is fine) Roy's best guitar performance (my opinion) was the flamenco style "Malaguena" -- th-cam.com/video/Pz2hXI7Ny9I/w-d-xo.html
    -----------------
Hee-Haw ran for 25 seasons and had a following that extended far beyond its original country music audience. For someone familiar with entertainment productions, you'll enjoy reading how the show was produced. From WikiPedia: "At the height of its popularity, an entire season's worth of shows were taped in two separate week-long sessions, with individual shows then assembled in the editing room. Only musical performances were taped with a live audience, while a laugh track was added to all other segments."

He is one of the Greatest Musicians that ever lived!!!!! He could do more by Accident than most could on purpose! It came so Easy that he could clown around and make it look like it is just clowning around!! But one song you have to watch him play is Malaguena!!! I don't know of anyone else that could play with as much talent as he does!! Guaranteed to take your Breath Away!!!!! He is one of those people that never got the fame that he deserved! Plus he played a number of instruments including the Banjo, and he was a Virtuoso on all of them. For years he played on the syndicated show Hee Haw!

It is a spin on a Johnny Cash song - Folsom Prison. Roy was on a comedy show called Hee Haw for about 20 years. It is said that he can play any instrument with a string on it. HIs parents owned a music shop so everyday he would play something different. He is extremely talented.

Folsom Prison Blues was originally sung by the late great Johnny Cash and in his original band Luther Perkins was his lead guitarist. Unfortunately Luther was mildly addicted to amphetamines, I think I heard he was a alcoholic too but don't quote me on that, and died quite young aged only 40 in 1968. According to Wikipedia about his death: "During the early morning hours of August 3, 1968, Perkins returned from fishing on Old Hickory Lake to his newly constructed home on Riverwood Drive, Hendersonville, Tennessee. He allegedly went to sleep in the living room while holding a lit cigarette, even though he hadn’t smoked in years by this time, according to family. His niece, by marriage, awoke around 6:00 am to find the living room aflame and Perkins collapsed near the door, almost dead. An emergency crew rushed Perkins to Vanderbilt University Hospital, where he was kept under intensive care until he died two days later.[15]
He is buried near the graves of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash at Hendersonville Memorial Park in Hendersonville, Tennessee.[16]
Luther Perkins was inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, as inductee #0230.[17]"

This man never got the credit he deserved and still doesnt for his skill and mastery of the guitar. Or the banjo for that matter. He was top five, at least, in my book, all time, on the guitar.
