      The description below the video says "July 13, 1969". I don't know if the date is absolutely correct, but if I remember correctly it was suggested to me and arrived at through some input I received from viewers of this video upload years ago.

      So, there are many artists, now and in the past that have played this song, yet after listening to as many as I can find, this song has for me, become Roy Clark and vice versus. No one can match the total fervor, and excitement this, his version brandishes as it's simple yet master statement.

      Hi…. You must be from England (Tea). I am too but live here in the US. I’d never heard of Roy Clark until I moved here. Jimmy Hendrix was asked “How does it feel to be the best Guitarist in the world”… his reply was “I don’t know, you’d better ask Roy Clark”. What a compliment. 👍🏼

      When I was early teens in the 70's. Roy Clark and Glen Campbell were weekly evening TV celeb's. As I recall, both were recognized as virtuouso guitarist. I admired them then and more today. It's great to see what appears to be younger people discovering Roy's incredible skills. He was also great in sketch comedy a true entertainer.

    Very few guitarists work on the right-hand technique as much as Clark did, and to keep that flamingo fluttering like that over a lengthy period of time is very challenging. You've heard Eddie Van Halen play leads or single notes this fast, but few have the right-hand strumming skills that Roy did. He also played multiple instruments. One of the greatest musicians of any time. RIP, big fella.

That’s the power and the mystery of music..it can penetrate and cut deep into your emotions and affect you in ways that defy logical explanation. He was a true talent and I’m not talking about Hee Haw...he was was a virtuoso of the guitar that I put right up there with Andres Segovia as far as talent and ability. He may never have gotten the recognition he deserved in the serious "Music" industry but real musicians know that he was simply one the best that has ever... and I mean ever played the instrument called guitar.

    Chet Atkins, Keith Urban and Brad Paisley eat your heart out. In my opinion there wi there will never be another guitar virtuoso like Roy Clark in Country music. And I firmly believe Roy stands in the to 20 guitarists of any genre, ever to be recorded. He belongs in that rare-air standing as an equal with Eric Clapton, Andrés Segovia, Jimmy Page, Django Reinhardt, David Gilmore and Jimmy Hendrix. Roy's arrangements, precision, and attack have had an influence on Country guitarists that can only be definitively eclipsed by the the man that reinvented and resurrected Rock guitar... Edward Van Halen. God Speed Roy Clark... I love you man!

    • @pocjetty
      @pocjetty 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Your list is short one Willie Nelson. Most people outside the industry don't know what a musical genius Willie is. (As is his sister, but even fewer know that.) In the early days, he was probably the most sought-after session guitarist in Nashville, and there's nothing he can't do on a guitar. Clark was always looking to show off his speed, but it also led him to mince a lot of good songs in the process. I've heard Willie cut loose when jamming, and he can pick them as fast as anyone. Not to detract from Clark's incredible talent, but Willie just respects the songs too much for that.
      Listen to Clark play La Malaguena, then listen to someone like Pepe Romero or Charo (yes, Charo is a serious player). It's fun to watch Roy Clark rip the strings, and to marvel at his talent. But which version would you listen to a second or third time?

    • @pocjetty
      @pocjetty 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Oh, and BTW - before there was a Roy Clark in country music, there was Chet Atkins. He was at least as fast as Roy Clark, and much more precise (I know you'll have a hard time swallowing that, but it's true.) See if you can find a recording of him playing Malaguena. And if you doubt his speed on the strings, try to find some of the songs with him playing the sitar. Damn.
      The reason Roy Clark is never mentioned in the pantheon you brought up is because he always picked arrangements that showed off Roy Clark, and not the songs. There have been a lot of really good guitar players who were too tricky for their own good. Clark was a very likable guy, and incredibly talented. But if you ask other musicians, most would pick both Willie and Chet Atkins above him. Both could match his talent, and both made MUCH more of a contribution.

    • @MacPro8CoreMan
      @MacPro8CoreMan 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Regarding Chet Atkins: I just listened a recording of Chet Atkins Malagueña. Malagueña was originally written for the piano, and after listening to a recording of the Composer Ernesto Lecuona play it on the piano; I can see where you can appreciate Chet's authenticity.
      My point about Roy Clark is that he made almost every song he played "his own". He supercharged Malagueña to showcase his speed and technique. He added flare and flourish to his arrangement that makes the song not only come alive, but quite frankly makes it mesmerizing.
      Chet Atkins was often heard criticizing Roy Clark (and Jerry Reed, and Glen Campbell) as not playing songs "right". I cannot criticize Chet, but I find him boring. I find many world class guitarists boring… That's just my opinion.
      I am lucky enough to see Roy Clark, Chet Atkins, and Glen Cambell in concert in the '80's. The crowd by far loved Roy the best, then Glen was second and Chet usually garnered only a polite applause.
      I think other guitarists may appreciate Chet at a higher level, but those who just like fun, fast, and exciting time… In the Country genre it's all about Roy in my opinion.

    • @MacPro8CoreMan
      @MacPro8CoreMan 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Charo was trained by Segovia… Yes she is no joke… She is awesome. Others like Pepe and a bunch of other spanish style players perform beautiful versions of Malagueña. But honestly I could only listen to them once or twice in a row. Roy Clark's version of Malagueña is in heavy rotation in my playlists. I LOVE IT. I do not care about authenticity to the original. This is the version I will always love.
