      Do what ChrisFix does, and I now do as well. Get a quote for a job, compare it to the cost of doing it solo, including the price of tools. If it is economically viable, buy the tools you need and do the job, saving money and also getting new tools!
      I've also started helping friends and family as I learn to fix cars, motorcycles and my current favorite... scooters! I just tell them to get me a quote, and I tell them if I can do the job for less, and sometimes they even buy me the tools I need (included in the price of the job.) and so, I make money, learn, stock up on tools, and I'm actually saving money on tools as well! Because I buy them as I need them, and only when it will save me money.
      This works, and I now have a pretty great tool collection and I have spare money for my hobbies. Honestly ChrisFix helped me big time with that advice, and these reviews save me from buying junk, or overpaying for the same junk!
      Good luck. Happy shopping.

    I have the same snapon driver you showed, it's the best screw driver out there.
    My only complaint is the grease used to lube the mechanism does not withstand heat, I left mine in a hot car for a few days and it became so stiff the ratcheting feature was unusable. I had to take it apart (which I don't recommend doing because there are small components inside that can be easily lost.) The mechanism isn't simple to put back together either, took me a good half hour to figure out. After relubing the thing worked better than new.

    3:30 Yes!!! Finally a fidget spinner for adults!!!
    2 month edit... The bit holder in the screwdriver handle is absolute garbage. It's an o-ring. The magnet towards the top isn't strong at all. The ratcheting aspect still makes it great, but if they use Megapro's bit storage, they'd be AMAZING!

    I have the 15 in 1 and pretty much hate it. It has all the essential bits I wanted and it has a great on way mechanism but as a screwdriver, it aggravates me to use it. The bits are not engaged far enough in the end, they are not held strongly with the magnet because they are double ended and they are rearly captured by the small handle mounted magnets before I drop them. If you had to have just one screwdriver, this would have you covered for bit variety I have many screwdrivers and my go-to is the Pic quick 6 pack. It's simplicity at its best. Very strong bit hold and the on-board bits stay put.

    Some of the concerns you listed, like not accepting normal bit are kind of big deals. Not something the "worlds best screwdriver" would have.
    I'll stick with Wera with the most comfortable handle, rapidapter and automatic extension.

  • @TheBrokenLife
    @TheBrokenLife 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I really hope manufacturers are paying attention to reviews like this. The issues you point out with their products are valid and generally would be really simple to address in a minor revision. The bit holder issues and the shank size on the smaller driver are pretty unacceptable.

      @RealToolReviews  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If nothing else, it's certainly promising that they're paying enough attention that you at least know they're paying attention.

    • @dtrrtd774

      I guess if you didn't care about the finish you could simply grind down the front to reduce the depth of the bit driver recess. I don't see the purpose in having the extra deep recess, unless they didn't think the metal was strong enough.
      Too bad they didn't put a hex drive on the back end of the screwdriver so you could use the box wrench for driving torque and also benefiting from the unidrive mechanism.
      Although the drawback that precludes doing that is probably the drive mechanism wouldn't withstand the abuse from people that would undoubtedly push it beyond it's capability and try getting a warranty claim.

  • @MrAnonymousRandom
    @MrAnonymousRandom 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    As someone who owns the 4" shaft one, overall they are good. The ratcheting mechanism is holding up under heavy use. However, in contrast to my Snap on ratcheting driver, the markings on the Rolgear handle and direction selector will wear off pretty easily. That's an additional thing they've got to work on besides what has already been stated in the video. But otherwise, every time I need a ratcheting screwdriver, I grab the Rolgear instead of my Snap on. The Snap on one ought to have a much better bit holding system for how overpriced it is. Also, there are definitely cheaper places to get the Rolgear. Lee Valley sells them for $14.50 plus shipping if you just want the driver.

  • @tnak004

    PB Swiss screw driver. Built extremely well and grips are just great. It feels that the screw driver became part of your hand. The bit quality is second to none because it's diamond cut.

    Thing is, the double ended bits stab your palm when you're wailing on it, something the Megapro ratcheting doesn't.

    I carried one of the 15-in-1 Rolgears for a while. I retired it because the bits constantly fall out when the driver is stored vertically in my tool belt. There's not enough friction inside the bit storage part. This isn't an issue if stored flat in a tool drawer. I now carry the ubiquitous Picquic Sixpac, which also happens to be made in Canada.

    Looks just like a Sprag Clutch... as used in hundreds of millions of starter overrun clutches, automatic transmissions, helicopter autorotate clutches, and tons of aerospace applications, to name but a few. The patent doesn't use the verbiage 'Sprag', but I'll bet a 10 spot thats exactly what it is. Nothing wrong with it, long as it doesn't start slipping once contaminated with everyday shop spooge & grime. Will watch...I want one if they exhibit sustained durability/robustness.

    • @fatboy1848
      @fatboy1848 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      mbcris the true test is will it hold up over the years..and he has tested the Williams and that gets you the snap-on at less than the rolgear. and there's
      resale value . snap on ratcheting screwdriver is king of resale value.

    • @MrAnonymousRandom
      @MrAnonymousRandom 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wrong. You'll lose at least half the value of whatever Snap on tool you're talking about when you sell it used. Anyone with a few brain cells wouldn't pay more than that for a used Snap on tool. You can buy two Williams ratcheting screwdrivers for the price of a Snap on one.

    • @fatboy1848
      @fatboy1848 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CarEnthusiast I myself bought the Williams screwdriver I agree. but if you get the right deal on used Snap-on tools they will hold their value.. they're like a Rolex Submariner get the right deal on a used Submariner and it goes up in value..

    • @dtrrtd774
      @dtrrtd774 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That indicates Snap-on tools have a bottom limit in the used market, where you won't lose any money when buying at that low level and then reselling. Question is how much do you lose from a new purchase though.

    • @santacastratedmydad7223
      @santacastratedmydad7223 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      DTR RTD some of there tools new are crazy insane high, and have gone up a lot in the past 5 to 7 years . I think it's unjustifiable consider in there hasn't been any great leaps in the economy to justify your tools going up 30 and 40% that has risen the used prices up.. and I am now discovering there are Williams equivalent to many of their tools and oftentimes way cheaper. you just got a scan around different places and see what the going prices on whatever you're looking for and you'll see what's up

  • @for2utube
    @for2utube 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have quite a few different makes. Depends on what you're trying to turn.
    Best all-rounder is the Snap-On SSDRMR4B, bought one new, about 30 years old now, got warranty replacement because I lost the little ball (and I was very forthcoming to them I was responsible). The Williams one is very close, but missing knurled shaft.
    The stubby Snap-On is also great.
    Schroder made a very strong 1.184.1 ratcheting screwdriver, that made a lot of sense for driving wood screws/cabinetry. Looks like a guy on ebay (who lives in Canada) is clearing out a few of these for half the original price.
    Have a Wiha T-handle that stays in a drawer. They improved the shank since I bought mine, but that doesn't help me, where the shank always slipped out of the handle after tightening each and every screw. Very tiring to rescue and reassemble. It has a zero-slip ratchet.
    HF makes an okay T-handle ratchet, novel thing is the variable-length shank, which helps clear some metal cabinet obstructions. It also doesn't disappear when left out at work.
    Any others have gone to trash or donated.

      Sprag/cam clutch bearings aren't as strong and durable under high torque as a rugged ratcheting teeth design. That's why you don't see them being used more widely in hand and power tools where high torque is being required in a small package. Otherwise they are great for applications within their limits, for a screwdriver or 1/4" ratchet.

    Using the Milwaukee 48-22-2302 10-in-1 ratcheting screwdriver. It came with 7, 3-1/2" bits to swap with but I also like that I can use those bits on my drill. May not be as good as Rolgear for double the number of bits but I like this one for now. Great review!

  • @iowawrench
    @iowawrench 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    So the 15 in 1 doesn't have a place for the extra bit if you want to use it as a 1/4 nut driver? If so, that wasn't thinking. I bought my brother a Megapro 211R2C36RD for Christmas based on my experience with my non ratcheting Megapro. Haven't used his ratcheting one but seemed pretty nice. Megapro has screwdrivers specific to certain trades - meaning they equip them with common drive bits. Even an elevator one for my trade. The Elevator one I have is a 15 in 1, has 7 double end bits, AND 7 storage slots in the handle meaning you can use it as a 1/4" nut driver w/o loosing a bit. Made in USA. Admittedly, I don't have a lot of variety in tools to compare though.

    IF you want a VERY heavy duty ratchet driver, get the Irwin Model: 1948774. Pretty much impossible to break. I like the free action of the Rolgear but the reviews and photos on Amazon show that the handle and tool holders are rather poorly made.

    A buddy of mine has one of the 6 inch Rolgear's and I'm not a fan. The directional mechanism is sloppy and hard to set, and there is a lot of play in the shaft. The cushion on the handle has also started to come off, but that could be because of the chemicals we deal with in the aviation industry. I must admit that the wrench provision is a really handy feature.
    I have a stubby Snap On that I use fairly often, but mostly because of its size makes it useful in areas that other drivers can't get to. My favorite ratcheting screwdriver has to be the Megapro Automotive though. That thing is as close to perfect as a tool can get.

  • @Satchmoeddie
    @Satchmoeddie 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    It looks like a starter drive bearing driven screwdriver, but the handles and bits look kinda cheap. White? Probably zero UV protection there. I have had a Roller Gear pinch race type driven palm driver that was made by the old Mac (pre Proto, Stanley, Blackhawk, Goldblatt, Mac era, back when Matco was still Mac's old big box store brand AKA Mac Allied Tool Company ) Kobalt, or Husky has made a cheesy copy of it, which was also not a great commercial success, either. Having seen this design, basically fail THRICE now, I wonder how it will work as a one way spinney screwdriver, as far as making a profit. I kinda like them, but they don't engage in a positive tactile way that people are used to. They grab, and don't slip, but it just feels foreign to people.

    I'm rebuilding a few scooters and it's a bit too tight for regular wrenches, and that seemed like a good idea, but I don't know how I feel about a palm wrench, I feel like you would have no torque, but to be fair... not much on a scooter needs much torque lol

    Never even heard of Rolgear till just now... having said that, I bet their toothless ratcheting mechanism is but a mere 'Sprag Clutch' (see Wikipedia). Nothing new really, they've been used in bunches of common things for eons. If I'm not mistaken Mac Tools even made Sprag Clutch ratchets back in the day (60's - 70's something like that)... a friend told me of one he had, and said he and loved it till got some solvent in it and began intermittently slipping.

    I recently gave away my Ratcheting Screwdriver because I NEVER even used it. Instead, I just use a Snap-on 1/4" Ratchet with a flexible handle. More leverage, more versatility and probably much stronger mechanism. Before giving mine away, it laid in my tool box for 20 years without use. Almost a useless tool in my opinion. The fact that it will not except the standard 1" Bits SHOULD be a deal breaker for most since that is what they [probably own current;y.
    In my experience the ABSOLUTE BEST BITS in the world are APEX! There available directly from Cooper and made in the USA. They are also available through Brownell's under their private label and come in either fixed or interchangeable handled versions. Brownell's has a 100% lifetime replacement warranty and the broken bits need NOT be sent in.
    PS: once you use these Apex Hollow Ground Bits, you will throw your Snap-on screwdrivers in the garbage!!! When buying Apex Phillips bits get the ones with the Anti Cam-out feature - they are GREAT!!!
    All this said, IMHO a 1/4" Ratchet works much better for me.

      I like ratcheting bit drivers for stuff like washing machines and dryers where you might be working on them up against a wall or a furnace or something and don't have room to swing a ratchet or a get an electric driver in. They're also handy from time to time in automotive interiors.
      They're not one of my most commonly used tools, but I'm not about to give mine away. The one I like the most is really short, but still has a full size handle, so it's ideal for the situations I mentioned above. It was also like $15 and came with a giant assortment of bits and sockets. It's just a Walmart special and I'd buy a few more of them in an instant if I could ever find them again.

    I use a cheap screwdriver: $ 2.99 or something.

    This makes it priceless as space and weight on my belt are at a premium.

    I'm not a fan of ratcheting screwdrivers because I fell like I have to move my wrist twice as much. Now I have used zero degree bearing ratcheting systems and they work great and wish everything would go to that design.

    I can't see any advantage to 0° swing arc on a screwdriver. If you are using a screwdriver you aren't limited by the swing as you would be with the handle of a ratchet. It might be a nice screwdriver otherwise but though.

    Incredibly stupid they did not use a larger drive hex on the smaller tool. Also infuriating they made it so you have to buy their bits, of course I doubt that was intentional ehh ;-)

    Maybe if you use screwdrivers occasionally, electricians who use them all day everyday will always pick fixed blade drivers, particularly Klein. You should test how balanced they are, and what happens to them after dropped from a 6, and 8ft ladder.

    I have multiple ratcheting screwdrivers but my favorite is the Snap-on SGDMRCE4 ratcheting 5-position screwdriver that converts from straight to 30 L/R or 60 L/R 90 degree and you can apply a tremendous amount of torque in tight places. T handles come in handy also.

    I typically detest ratcheting screwdrivers, however during the Wiha spring sale I picked up their multi bit ratcheting driver along with some of their side cutters for the same price as the side cutters would have been by themselves normally. I have been using exclusively Wiha bits for years now and they are just about indestructible so i figured their bit driver would be ok.
    I guess what I'm saying is I've never used the Rolgear, but the Wiha has been the only ratcheting driver I've ever NOT relegated to the junk drawer/wifes toolbox, so give it a try.

    • @MrWoowootila

      Try a Snap On, I agree with you that most ratcheting screwdriver a junk. The Snap On come in various lengths and the stubby has been especially useful in tight spots. Have not tried a Wiha, but the Snap On I have has lasted me a couple of decades.

    I'm in the market for a ratcheting screwdriver and I think I'm narrowed down to the snap on 5 position ratcheting screwdriver. This rolgear looks interesting, but the fact I could use the snap on as a pistol grip for more leverage, and the interchangeable shank on the snap on makes it double as a 1/4" ratcheting nut driver

    • @Dansyoung
