It was incredible to watch Lucas Glover with a shorter backswing and great body rotation. Incredible ball striking that led to two back-to-back victories.
You are so right When I'm loose in the tee box I usually get great distance and I don't have to take the club as far back as others effortless swing all the way. Thanks Paul
Paul. Your insightful suggestion to perform backswings on my deck in front of my sliding glass door saved me from purchasing video recording equipment. I can view in real time the extent and boundaries of my backswing. Thanks, man.
Very good. Glad you are going to work on it. It just takes daily practice swings for a while until you master the move. I like people to see it so they get the visual feedback as well. Keep at it. Build a great swing you hit great shots.
How right you are. I have the over swing which leads to all the problems you demonstrated, bent left elbow, over the top, loss of distance, tight golf grip etc. I even do this with short irons. I am constantly trying to correct this. When I do it right my swing becomes effortless.smooth, and excellant distance. Under stress I swing faster leading to all of the above problems. Your tips are helping. Thanx
Hi Paul, after watching your videos I can safely say I am playing my best ever golf! I rotate so much more and my swing is much shorter. Ball goes further and straighter - I am so much more consistent too - THANKYOU for your help and explaining things in real English! Others talk gibberish! Not had a lesson - just done what you have said
Glad you are doing well and like the simplicity of my tips. Keep it simple and you will try it. If you get results you will keep doing it. Keep up the good work.
This is a very intelligent video. I found Paul's videos recently and have already bought a driver course, which is excellent. He has also sorted out my sand shots with just one tip from a video. You can pick up his general big concepts from 2 or 3 videos, but I recommend you watch a lot of them, because there are gold nuggets in the detail.
My back swing is short know and the problem i have i think i have to fly through down swing, and been using more arms then wrist. Keep it up paul,i know change is hard, but has to be done
Don't get me wrong I prefer shorter over longer as the long swing gets you pulling it down with the arms. The shorter swing gets you using your hips but you can be too short. It is usually short and fast. The problem there is as you get older you will end up hitting it nowhere because you can't fire your hips quick enough to get any power. I would try to get it to parallel with driver or just short. The other clubs of course would be short of parallel too. This length of swing will allow you get power forever. You are probably trying to force the left arm too straight so it is chopping off your backswing. Try this drill for a bucket and see what happens: th-cam.com/video/0gOuKQpUl54/w-d-xo.html Also watch this: th-cam.com/video/1TiT0C8XF2U/w-d-xo.html
I know my backswing is too long based on this concept. Have to work on bring that back a little. There are other TH-cam golf people that talk about adding more to the backswing to generate more clubhead speed so glad to see you promoting good practices
Yes, there is all sorts of info out there usually aimed at younger people. Plus I am not going to teach you something that gets you to hit one ball longer. I teach older people and I am going to teach you a swing that hits most of your shots long and straight.
I shortened my Backswing to less than parallel to the ground and instantly had a major improvement in my ball striking. I'm now hitting it not only farther but pretty much dead straight every time with all clubs. This is what works for me, now everyone is different and i'm an old guy.
I am on the other end of the spectrum. Too short of a backswing and need to add more backswing to extend the life of my old body...LOL! I will work on that. Thanks!
hahahahahah me an you about same age i cant swing that hard if i played a round trying to keep up with them young boys i want be able get out bed for a week after a round of golf hahahahahah
So if it's working you need to keep doing what you are doing. For most, it is not working so they need to length or shorten getting it close to parallel.
Exactly. A young person's swing on an older person's body. Ouch. Start lengthening and you won't believe it. These short swingers never want to short up though so stay focused.
I've been the left arm collapsing, swing too long, over the top guy. Yesterday I tried increasing my shoulder turn while shortening my back swing. Seems counter intuitive but I think I achieved it by keeping my left arm straighter. Anyway, combined with your tip from another video about the left cheek position on the down swing and follow through and I was hitting those effortless rockets we are all searching for with irons and driver. Might just be one of those perfect days but hoping its more than that. Thanks for the tips.
I struggled with a long backswing for years...it almost hit my right ankle. I finally figured out not to take the club back with my hands but with my body...kept the club in front of me. Does my backswing still get too long...yes once in a while but it is miles better than it once was.
Thank you so much 😀 I just keep it simple. Plus, I don't see the swing as others see it. 30 years of standing on a tee deck thinking about it. Plus the other 12 working on it myself before that.
Hi Paul, I heard Jon Rahm explain why his swing is so short. Jon was born with a club foot on his right leg. He required several surgeries as a toddler. He said he developed his unique swing to suit his body & his right leg. We're all a little different & need to find what works for us.
This may be but he is young and he can generate the speed with a short swing (see how hard he moves at it). The people I teach can't. So even though this may feel great to some people they need to learn a longer swing. I can swing at 80% full and get the same result as short and 100%. I never want to swing at 100%. The ball could literally go anywhere. You need a swing for life so close to parallel with driver will allow you to build this type of swing.
Definitely something worth being conscious about. On average, in between is better I’m sure. I can do any of the three but I prefer a longer backswing. Past parallel. Especially with driver because I feel like I don’t need to add anything to the swing to murder the ball. Literally 10 percent effort. For me, I’ve found that range of motion is worth ten times more than swing effort. That’s just me though. Long and slow.
Thanks Paul ! another great tip! ive always been too short of shoulder turn/backswing length and then too quick with a low body slide which usually means a nice 2-way miss, trying to save it with my hands! Thanks to your tuition Im getting much more orthodox but I still struggle to complete a proper backswing...any extra tips appreciated! thanks so much Rob
Glad you liked it. Yes, that is tricky. So you need to choose one and fix it. Then fix the other. You work on both of these at once and you will never get it. I would do the backswing first. You need to do practice swings every night literally lifting the club and setting the top. I remember going from flat to more upright. I did probably 200-500 practice swings per night for 2 weeks. I was never flat again after that. For you your thought would be parallel at the top. Just match the shaft parallel to the ground and do it nightly. I would be going smooth back. You are short and quick cause you are trying to hit the ball. I just posted this: th-cam.com/video/qV_4zNIwyg8/w-d-xo.html That will show you why you don't want to be short and quick. Get that first then we will talk about sliding.
Paul Wilson Golf Thats perfect thanks, I think its down to tips from the likes of Leadbetter who said the low body starts forward while backswing is still completing....whilst that probably is the actual case with pros it has made me very short and quick. I will follow your advice religiously as it all makes perfect sense! thanks again Rob
If thinking about the physics: swinging an object of fixed length over a longer distance (longer backswing) should develop more clubhead speed and thus distance. BUT certain people have shorter swings due to their rhythm and sequence. Trying to make it longer May wreck their sequence. That’s not easy to change. Also longer swing and not hitting on the screws with a square club face is no good either. My bigger question is: if 2 guys both turn their shoulders fully (90 degrees) on the backswing, why are some people’s swings longer than others (without cupping the wrist or bending the left arm)?
There are many variables. This is a general tip on short and long swings. If I addressed every situation the tip would have been an hour long. Surely, someone with a short swing knows they are putting everything they have into it and a long swings knows they are hitting. If so, then they would follow the tip.
I was waiting for you to tell us.Exactly how to gauge what is an optimal backswing for a person?I'm gonna guess that if you can keep your left arm straight during the backs swing.Once the left arm starts to bend. That's when you need to stop and that's about as far as you can go.Is that true?I'm sixty two years old and I can't twist all the way to level the club
Watch: th-cam.com/video/1TiT0C8XF2U/w-d-xo.html Do this drill: th-cam.com/video/0gOuKQpUl54/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/syZXIyJNH-Y/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/tHipoVuEzI4/w-d-xo.html
My issue now that I'm in my 50s is too short of a backswing. Watching it on video yesterday, I was surprised how short it is. I'm also only getting about 220 yards (maybe 230 on a great drive), which probably speaks to that. Is the reason probably because I'm not coiling enough? I'd love to pick up another 15 yards, which seems like I should be able to do at my level but no matter what I try, distance is about the same.
Well, you can coil fully and still be short back there so unless I saw it I wouldn't know. I would say it's the short backswing. The shorter the swing the less time you have to generate speed. Think Jon Rahm. He hits it long with a short swing right? See how big he is? See how fast he moves? Freddy Couples hit it just as far if not farther with a effortless swing. So unless you can move as fast a Rahm you may never increase your speed. So what I would do is lengthen the swing and loosen the arms and wrists. I say this because another 10-20 years from now you will serious hit it nowhere just like tons of my students. Watch this and see how little effort it takes me to get to 100mph: th-cam.com/video/Q_LW7nm4ssk/w-d-xo.html So if I can do that anyone can do it. Just follow this tip: th-cam.com/video/LAejvDbw_aA/w-d-xo.html
I have a very short backswing, I feel like I can only go back so far before I feel "stuck" so to speak. Whats the easiest mechanic for me to keep in mind that will allow me to get it at least close to parallel with the ground? Left elbow bend, or is it more a wrist action? Thank you for your time I enjoyed the video
You need to slow down the backswing for a start. People with short backswings are usually too fast and looking for power going back. You set it going back. Then you look for power coming down. So go slow. Fully hinge your wrists. Then start down with the lower. Do this daily in a mirror watching your backswing until you know the feeling of fully hinging in the wrists. You obviously need to fully coil too. th-cam.com/video/b0fylSrKe8Q/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/MmLjEoyqEIE/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/5_O0H2QNFo0/w-d-xo.html
This is typically from having tight wrists and/or not hinging properly. It have to give somewhere so in your case you let go. If you didn't you would have about a half a backswing. So hold on securely but loosen your wrists. Here is how to do it: th-cam.com/video/Z8K3Gctkz7A/w-d-xo.html Also, th-cam.com/video/k1OhZyWKgGc/w-d-xo.html
The GOAT, Jack Nicklaus, did. Paul also mentions it in the Bodyswing (highly, highly recommend getting the video set and book). Just make sure to get the heel down.
I think I have a short backswing cause my back hurts after the round from driving the hips so hard. Also as you mentioned my distance suffers. I shortened the backswing to get the ball straighter as I was over the top on my longer backswing. Is there any tips for stopping your lead hip from swaying forward? I believe I'm shifting my "Y" axis forward when swinging driver by 4 inches or more leaning forward?
Yep. Start to lengthen it a little. Turn your arms off too. Here you go: th-cam.com/video/Kk63_fYSAMg/w-d-xo.html and: th-cam.com/video/GhKr6Y8NHGo/w-d-xo.html
You want to move your head in the swing. Just watch tour players. In no way do I want people keep their heads perfectly still. July 2001 Golf Digest Jim McLean measure tour pros heads at set up and at the top. Tour average head movement was 3.6 inches. Average amateur was .7 of an inch. Tiger at his best moved it 5 inches. I have taught moving the head for 33 years now. When the person moves their head they get way more power. See it differently the try it. Once you move it you will never want to keep it still: th-cam.com/video/5vq92sBQyU4/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/ln0qIPmOVaY/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/teohdzCREf0/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/TmjVMTzGRrU/w-d-xo.html
Paul, I want to comment to you on the drill and video with the driver. It's the one where you place a imbedded Tee 6 inches & offset behind a Teed ball. I played a round of golf, Paul this setup flat out works, I was amazed how straight & increases distant the ball went. This is the best tip I ever have experienced. Thank you. Mike G
I’m 2 weeks new to golf and I’m pretty sure I pulled my right oblique. Hurts like hell. I’m right handed. Any idea how I did that? Too much backswing? Too much trauma from me chunking the ground before the ball? Too much arms?
Never heard that one before. No idea. Probably swinging too hard which is what most people do and why most people hurt themselves. You should take a few lessons and start learning the fundamentals. This is a tough game to learn yourself.
Hey Paul. Thanks for your tips! Just got into your videos but I am hooked! Use to have a good decent backswing generating good power but somehow along the way I got the shanks and developed a bad habit to get me out of that funk but now I have a really short backswing otherwise I’m back to the shanks. Any correlation between a longer back swing and shanking the ball? Need to get my power back!!
Glad you like the tips. I can fix the shanks in 5 mins. So simple. Do you shank a 3 iron or do you shank shorter clubs? Shorter clubs right? What do you do when you setup to a shorter club? You bend over more right? When you do your body mass overhangs you toe line. As you take it back you roll onto your toes and get closer to the ball. So stand tall with shorter clubs. To do this do your setup. Look up to the sky. Then look down with your head until you see the club and ball clearly NOT your toes clearly (peripheral is fine). This is a taller setup in balance. Feel rotational in your backswing NOT like you are hitting down on the ball. Done. Fixed. There is a correlation. You do a longer swing being bent over too much and you will get even more weight on your toes coming down. Let me know.
Paul Wilson Golf I’ll definitely incorporate this! Everything is so simplistic about your philosophy of the game. We need more coaches like you. Thanks Paul!
Glad you help. You want to do a 2-3 practice swings to get the feel for what you are going to do and also keep your rhythm. Once you do them you apply this feeling to your shot.
If one don't have the right teacher teaching them they will never get it. Could've used Doc Wilson's videos at the golf course this weekend. We need 3D videos so the teacher can reach out and shake us to perfection. They say golf is a fun game, I say no, if you don't know how to play and always struggling to be better, how can that be fun? Golf is only fun when you're playing on the fairways not in the woods. This so called fun game cost a lot of time and money by everyone that plays, so lets get it this year before we'll not be aloud out or more golf course's might shut down permanently.
Thanks for your support. The answers are here and more are coming. They just have to watch these tips. I have the next best thing to 3D videos. How about my being there when you play and practice. This is what my app does. CoachLink allows me to be right there with you checking your positions, giving you a few things to work on or watching you play a hole you have trouble with. I would have killed for something like this when learning the swing. Find out more here: bodyswing.com/coachlink

Note to self: Get it to at least 255 on the next practice round.
On how far you are taking the club back? If you are too short yes, you need to go longer.
I’ve tried everything to stop my right hand coming off at the top of the swing
This is typically from having tight wrists and/or not hinging properly. It have to give somewhere so in your case you let go. If you didn't you would have about a half a backswing. So hold on securely but loosen your wrists. Here is how to do it:

@@paulwilsongolf Thank you sir! I’m trying and watching your videos. It means something a man of your stature to get back with me!
Hi how does your swing compare to stack and tilt?
It would the exact opposite to what they teach.
Is it ok to lift the left heel in the backswing? Seems easier on the back
The GOAT, Jack Nicklaus, did. Paul also mentions it in the Bodyswing (highly, highly recommend getting the video set and book). Just make sure to get the heel down.
Thank you for the promo. I appreciate it.
I wish I could have a longer but my flexibility only allows my hands to get to shoulder height in backswing
You need to go as high as you can but fully hinge the wrists at the top. Follow this tip: th-cam.com/video/KZAj2Bk8Roc/w-d-xo.html
I feel like when I try to lengthen my backswing it makes my head move towards my trail leg so I’m not over the ball
Once you move it you will never want to keep it still:

My driver back swing is parallel. Yet my iron swing is a lot shorter.
That is fine. Just don't go too short. Base it on your shoulder coil. Once coiled you are at the top.
Thank you. Mike G
Excellent. I love hearing it.
It's amazing how much power you can generate by using the big muscles of the legs and hips while keeping the wrists very loose.
You sure do. Watch this:

There I am literally doing nothing to get that speed.
Seems my buddies and I rarely take practice swings. How important is it ? Thanks for helping us hackers with good advice.
Glad you help. You want to do a 2-3 practice swings to get the feel for what you are going to do and also keep your rhythm. Once you do them you apply this feeling to your shot.
100%
Glad you liked it. Thanks.
How far should I stand from the ball when hitting driver
Butt of the club 8-10" from you belt buckle.
I have problem with full swing lol
That doesn't tell me much. Need more info. Where are you hitting it?
