      It is aircraft as in one aircraft or 10 aircraft, so the plural of aircraft is aircraft. See this so often on the internet. Like dog for one and dogs for more dogs does not apply to aircraft. So, one would say see all the aircraft on the airport, not aircrafts. Just a short English lesson.

      @@Nahngunnarson Why not?

    • @Nahngunnarson
      @Nahngunnarson ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@aolinger680 Magnesium becomes brittle and cracks as it ages. This is true of any magnesium components after 40 to 50 years, including magnesium wheels on old race cars and these old warplanes. The Germans especially liked using structural magnesium components on their aircraft. Of course the warplanes of that Era were never intended to last very long, and didn't. And this is a major reason most planes of that Era are display only, not flight worthy. But at the current value of these old machines, reproduction components can be fabricated. Most of the restored flying WWII planes are more replica than original anyway.

In particular, cantilever and suspension have caught my interest. I would have liked to learn how those engineers calculated dimensions without computers to provide the necessary material strength.
    As a side note, I would like to add that, as a born German, I am thankful to see the engineering accomplishments of my compatriots, who have lived and worked in this context of historic times, are brought to life once again.

    When I was a kid building models, I just couldnt comprehend how those motor mounts bolted to the fuselage could hold up and support the DB. Let alone with the G forces of aerial combat. Later on when I was growing up I learned a little engineering. Then I looked at it like could the DB hold up and handle the weight of the 109. I thought thats no problem at all. After that I happened to gaze over at my 3 ton pickup made mostly of steel. And it was all bolted to aluminum rims.

    • @dyer2cycle
      @dyer2cycle ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, me too...thinking about the weight, power, vibrations of that engine..in the air, the engine does indeed hold up and handle the weight of the 109...on the ground, the 109(and it's flimsy looking landing gear) hold up the weight of the DB...so it works both ways...

Those two projects are very popular and loved by your subscribers and warbird fans alike. What a fantastic start to the resurrection of that airplane. Willy Messerschmitt would be very proud of your attention given to his design. The detail in the design of the aircraft systems is very well displayed here. The forging for the landing gear pivot and the integration into the engine mount and fuselage structure made for a very strong landing gear mount. This allowed the wings to be very lightly constructed and to fasten to the fuselage at three locations, 2 on the carry through spar, and one location at the front of the wing. The engineering of this aircraft is so beautiful, I could study it all day. You guys are so lucky to be able to work on such a beautiful airplane.

    One goal of Willy Messerschmitt‘s design team in the early / mid 1930‘s was to fit the smallest possible airframe to the largest possible engine. It shows. As Mr. Weeks observed when sitting in the 109: compared to a Mustang she is small, if not tiny. Even the Spitfire is larger (and the T-6 / Harvard as well). A G-6 weighs (MTOW) 3150 Kg, DB 605 A has 1475 hp. That‘s 2.1 Kg/hp. (4.6 lbs / 1 hp). Quite impressive I would say. (P-51 D for comparison: 5260 Kg, 1649 hp, 3.1 Kg / hp (7 lbs / 1 hp). Though the early versions of the Bf 109 were much lighter, the engines were less powerful as well (Jumo 210 D: 680 hp, Bf 109 B1 MTOW 1955 Kg, (4310 lbs), 2.8 Kg/ hp, 6.3 lbs / hp).

    Very nice video, good to see the work needed to install the engine. It would be great if this project could be covered on video as well as the Bf 108 project was. Going by clicks on the first part interest is quite high so far.

    Great plane. Love this stuff. The forklift makes me uneasy tho, the forces involved are considerable and hard to control. There has been an accident in 1979 American Airlines Flight 191 involving forklifts and engine swap. I would vote for using a custom built hand driven crane as you might expect mounting/unmounting the engine several times in the future. Cant cost that much compared to accidentally cracking the beams or some bad feeling you might have done so without noticing on such a unique, priceless aircraft.

    The DB-605 engine, much like the BMW Boxer Twin motorcycle engine, looks like an uninspired lump of metal but what's inside is pure mechanical genius! And, yes, the engine is massive compared to the airframe onto which it is attached. Is it any wonder why the German aces preferred the 109 over the Fw-190?

    • @DannyBoy777777
      @DannyBoy777777 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not true at all. The Western aces preferred the 190 because of its perceived durability in comparison to the 109.

      It could be that after years fighting in the 109, that becaome part of them, they felt strange and the response of the plane was different to the commands given on the 190 than on the 109.

    In appearance, this is a Daimler Benz DB 605 with a capacity of 1475 hp. With. (but not more than 1550, because outwardly there is a single-stage supercharger of a standard size, there were two-stage and single-stage versions with a larger supercharger with powers of 1700 and up to 2000 hp). 12 cylinders with a volume of 35.7 liters, 4 valves per cylinder, weight 756 kg. Due to the location of the drive supercharger on the left side of the engine, the compression ratio of the left and right row cylinders was 7.3 on the left and 7.5 on the right to compensate for the pressure difference in the intake pipes due to their unequal length. The engine is inverted, the crankshaft is on top, and the cylinders are on the bottom. Camber 60 degrees. Direct injection. Info taken from wiki and shortened if anything)
    По внешнему виду это Daimler Benz DB 605 мощностью 1475 л. с. (но не более 1550, т.к. внешне стоит одноступенчатый нагнетатель стандартного размера, были версии двух ступенчатые и одноступенчатые с нагнетателем большего размера с мощностями 1700 и вплоть до до 2000 л. с.). 12 цилиндров объёмом 35,7 литра по 4 клапана на цилиндр, вес 756 кг. Ввиду расположения приводного нагнетателя с левой стороны двигателя, степень сжатия цилиндров левого и правого ряда была 7,3 слева и 7,5 справа для компенсации разницы давлений во впускных трубопроводах по причине их неравной длины. Двигатель перевертыш, коленвал сверху, а цилиндры снизу. Развал 60 градусов. Непосредственный впрыск. Инфа взята из вики и ужата если что)

    I always thought the engine was mounted to the plane. This video made me realise the plane is mounted to the engine in this case. So compact and beautifully packaged a design is the 109. Shame about the landing gear though. But hey, you can't have it all.

    • @Spinner1987CH
      @Spinner1987CH ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well the germans produced more than 33‘000 BF-109‘s and for logistic reasons it was designed so the landing gear is mounted to the fuselage. Therefore the fuselage could easily be transported by railways and did not need any transportation jig. At least thats what an old german engineer from the time explained to me. But of course to land with such a narrow wheelbase was extremely difficult and approximately 1/3 of the BF-109‘s were destroyed during takeoff and landing accident’s.

    • @nocloo6829
      @nocloo6829 ปีที่แล้ว

      Like Don said: if it’s not there to make it faster, help the pilot or make it hit harder, they didn’t do it.
      The landing gear was good enough and as compact as possible, so it stayed as it was.
