Those inverted V12s are an engineering masterpiece and show just how innovative German engineers were. When the RAF got their hands on one during the Battle of Britain they were confounded by the design features which included fully automated injection; endlessly variable blower ratios and a single cam lobe driving both exhaust and intake valves via a system of interposed roller followers!
Possibly the best 13 minutes I've spent on TH-cam! No announcements or silly background music, just stirring engine sound! To me the Emil is the classic 109. Thanks for uploading such pleasure and to all you guys who added informative remarks.
WWII was ugly... but the Machinery was and is still so beautiful ! my grandpa used to fly the bf 109 e&g in wwII. He always told me what a great fighter it was. It´s so sad i never had a chance to fly one of these by myself. I always remember his face when we went to an airshow and saw them. He was so proud and pleased seeing them still airborne and intact. Miss U Grandpa =( I always felt guilty for all those great men he shot down during the battles...

They didn't win it anyway. The FW is and ugly plane and the nicest is the MK9 Spitfire and it was superior in many ways, It DID win the war too. We have a flying FW190 here in New Zealand and it is ugly in flight as well.

Wonderful to see a fully restored flying E with the right engine. Maybe I'm biased, but to me, the E is THE classic ME 109. Long may she stay airworthy.
For me the perfect 109 was the F4 with its round wing tips, cleaned up nose, no horizontal stabilizer struts and relocated wing radiators. But I've never flown one. Gunter Rall spoke highly of the F4, however, noting it was the best example as a fighter, "before the 109 became weighed down," as it became in subsequent versions with heavier engines and guns. Yet, I agree, the E series looked very good. Like a shark in the air.
There would be a swastika on the tail of course if it were a scrupulous restoration. There can be legal issues, of course, if the aircraft is based in Germany. Otherwise it's a matter of debate, one side claiming that failing to include original markings are an attempt to rewrite history, others claiming there is little point to adding them because of the infamous nature of that history.
Great video. What a fantastic look back in time. I love all WWII planes. BF109 was such a great plane. FW190 is one of my favorites. These pilots are so lucky to fly such classics. Thanks for sharing!
It's amazing the sound of the engine ME, besides the high quality of the video, is a gem of German engineering of that time. It is a part of history that can still hear and see, thanks for the video.
Jj Mc Coy best part was me 109 being fuel injected ,never had any hiccups like the spitfire or hurricane carburettor engines that used to hiccup on negative g,s.
Mc Coy - And the amazing part is, more than 70 years later we citizens of the 21st century are still able to watch and listen to one of these babies, as if we were back in the '40s during the war years....and to a privileged few, it is possible to watch them in a Museum from a very close distance ! As for me, I'm more than happy to be able to download these vids for my personal collection !
Love hearing that Daimler. My favorite scene from " The Battle of Britain" movie was at the beginning when the two Bf109's made their strafing run low to the ground with those Daimlers screaming. To me this engine sounds as nice as the Merlin.
All of the ME 109s in the Battle of Britain film were, in fact, Buchons, which is a 109 airframe fitted with the Rolls Royce Merlins. If you look at the film again, you will see that the exhaust pipes are at the top of the cowling, as is the Spitfire and Hurricane. On a Daimler, Benz engined 109, the exhaust ports are at the bottom of the engine cowling because it is inverted. The Buchon 109 with the Merlin engine was used post World War Two by the Spanish Air force.
Ted Church I have to agree. I have been to many airshows and probably the best sound lol hear all day is a P-51 Mustang in a dive full throttle at air show center !!!!!!' What a smooth and powerful sound 🔊
Lancair W, There are probably many WW2 planes that sound nice as I heard the Corsair and that too sounds great but a different sound to the Merlin. The Griffin doesn't sound as good but in its own way still ok. So even the 109 sounds cool too but I just love that Merlin.
You could always hear a 109 out of other aircraft blindfolded by that beautiful whistle from the supercharger. I used to like the E more than the G series, but the G-series has just this more streamlined menacing shark look to it. Awesome footage of the Emil!
amazing video, people dont think about it but to see one of these planes flying is a real treat, but 5 and all together. LIke having 5 museums fly by at once. just think for one minute the amount of work and money it took to get all these planes together at the same time for us to see.
Remarkable video. The aircraft looks stunning and a tribute to all who restored her. The landings, normally so difficult such narrow track landing gear, were beautiful to watch.
Nice to see it flying alongside the FW190 which is powered by its original BMW 801 radial. The inverted V12 Daimler 601 seems to be much louder than the 801. In all of the scenes with both aircraft, all you can hear is that sweet smooth Daimler!
Mauricio Herrera Just the engines were made by those companies. Daimler Benz (Mercedes) made the DB 601 V12 for the BF109. The aircraft itself was made by Messerschmitt. BMW made the 801 14 cylinder radial engine for the FW190. That aircraft was made by Focke Wulf. Both of these aircraft in this video are actual WW2 combat veterans.
Whenever I see a 109 in video or pics I think of Erich Hartmann. Greatest ace in history. 352 confirmed kills. Germany produced the highest scoring aces in both wars.
+ Classic Cycling There are three flyable Bf-109E restorations in the world and they have all been completed by the same workshop. The workmanship is superb. A fourth example is in progress from a different workshop and I'm looking forward to seeing it.
I think I would dread meeting either of these two birds, the "Schmitt 109 or the FW190. Both formidable aircraft, nicely done. You even threw a Spitfire in the mix, nice.
The Mk9 Spit was a match if not superior to the FW190 and the 109 even if it did have a carb instead of injection. It could turn inside both of them with ease. But nice to see a 109 in the air as it completes the picture.
@@tedchurch mk9 was not a match for the fw190 not even a bf109 why? They didn’t use the same fuels. Spitfire used American 100 to 150 while Germany used 87. Bf109 has a bigger engine by over 25% meaning much more potential for power given high octane American fuels which Germany never had for higher compression
Unbelievably good video of a very rare flying E3 - What was her Werk No. and combat/crash/restoration history ? I love the 'Emil' version, but wish someone could get a Stuka back in the air with those sirens.
Here's the history of this aircraft: Werk No. 1342 - This Bf 109 was assigned to Jagdgeschwader (fighter wing) 51 and piloted by Eduard Hemmerling, a veteran of combat in France. On July 29, 1940, during an air battle over Dover, Hemmerling earned his third victory in combat. But his own aircraft was mortally wounded, and Hemmerling turned toward home. His failing airplane crashed off the coast of Cap Blanc Nez, killing the 27-year-old pilot. In 1988, a man walking on the beach near Calais noticed a piece of metal sticking out of the sand-the tip of this plane’s wing. The Bf 109 was excavated and later moved to England for reconstruction and restoration. The plane was added to the Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum in 2007.
+Martin Davies This museum is working on a Stuka, but their projects are done in private so no photos. It will probably take many years to finish and they have other planes to finish first that are farther along. (P-38 soon, Me-262 soon, Fw-189 on hold) The biggest problem with a Stuka is that the engineering drawings are incomplete and scattered, and you really need them to build correctly for airworthiness certification. Worldwide, there are now three E series that are flying.
Thanks for that interesting update. Where did the Stuka or Stuka parts all come from ? Recently there was a fairly complete Stuka found, still sitting upright in warm Mediterranean waters just off Croatia I think. That would seem an ideal airframe to work from, to use or manufacture new build parts.
+Martin Davies The Stuka is a crunched up R-2 that was salvaged in Russia many years ago. Basically complete but smashed. There is another complete R-2 in the Science Museum in Chicago, so it was recently cleaned and scanned with 3D tools and hopefully will provide some needed engineering data. That Stuka in the waters off Croatia breaks my heart. It is property of Croatia and there were talks of salvage but no and it will stay in the water for now. There is little will, interest or expertise locally for it. It is a perfect candidate to reverse-engineer a new example, but for now the scuba divers are going to wreck it until it falls apart . Export and salvage laws sometimes prevent any action on these things also.
The BF109-E series was the prettiest of the ME-109's in my view. It and the MK-5 Spitfire was the best looking l planse of the war with the P-51 in 3rd place.
+Helder M It's a ballance of getting the most out of the fuel in the cylinders. Too rich and too little fuel will burn. Too lean and the engine will get too hot, because more fuel also provides some cooling. I'm not an ME expert, but this is general to many combustion engines. It's a living thing.
+Anthony Smith There's another explanation. He could have been doing a "mag check"" as we call it. It would explain the sudden drop and return of RPMs, as well as the exhaust. I still think it was a mixture check though :)
+GTOAviator The Bf-109 also has a mechanism to clean fouled spark plugs by flooding the combustion chambers with fuel to generate a lot of heat. The pilot could be cleaning the plugs.
I laugh at the same thing. I have years of experience on various types, including B747-400, but just like you, I cannot stop giggling when I see an old piston engine farting and burping and coughing :->
Sorry, this comment was meant for THIS thread, not the one where you discussed the takeoff problem. "....My daughter she was 6 at the time, when we were at Toulouse air show. She said, "dad how come the airplane is farting?"...."
watching this without the swastika on the verticle stabilizer is like drinking a virgin shot of tequila...just can't be done.oh wait...that FW-190 is like a straight shot of white LIGHTNING!
falconeaterf15 the spitfire is beautiful, the mustang is pretty but yes the 109 certainly is an angry looking beast. In combat I'd give the advantage to the allied fighters later in the war but for looks, it is the 109 for me each time
lawyers9 I'll tell you what guys the fw 190 must be up there, but it was a fighter bomber, what about the p 38 lightning ,me 109 bf.is probably my fave, but you've got the spitfire, which was the saviour of Britain but it was obviously the hurricane which was a much better gun platform and shot down more bombers than the spit, which was an interception against fighters, while the brilliant hurricanes killed the bombers and got no credit.
I'm dumbstruck trying to imagine how these guys find a 60 year old wreck in a swamp and restore it to better than new flying condition! Hats off to you people! I know it take a lot of volunteer time! It must be for the love of aircraft be it an F4F or an FW 190! Please keep up the good work!
+tootired76 The Bf-109 ditched off of the French coast during the Battle of Britain. The wings and other parts were found in the sand sometime in the 1980s. So it's a new-build to original condition. The Fw-190 at this museum was very intact when found and a lot of original aircraft went into the restoration.
+916fanatic1 Right after WWII probably pick up a P-51 for a couple hundred bucks. I suppose in Germany a Messerschmitt Bf 109E would have been really the last thing on Germans mind. The country was destroyed. Flying one back to the states probably not economically feasible. Now you're looking at probably a million or more dollars 70 years will do that to airplanes. Flying this airplane would of course be a bomb, but only a few people will have the chance, or are alive to tell. Another factor an airplane like this parts are very difficult to find. There is also the issue of having an in-flight failure that causes the plane to crash. Then it's a million dollars of broken parts.
Of course remember that Spain produced their version of the 109 as well, it is called the Hispano Aviación HA-1112, powered generally with a Merlin engine, that used in it's rival the Spitfire.

Yes, this E variant is less sleek than streamlined G-K series, but that is what adds to its menacing look.

The Spit and the bf 109 together = legendary.

109 E's my favorite variant and probably my favorite fighter plane.
That supercharger hanging off the side is menacing
FW 190 was a better plan IMO but both exceptional and the gold standard when introduced
If I could have a choice of WWII fighter, it would be the FW190 D
I'm in love with the Bf-109...

I don't think that was the big factor- the 109 was still better for high altitudes.

The Bf-109 also has a mechanism to clean fouled spark plugs by flooding the combustion chambers with fuel to generate a lot of heat. The pilot could be cleaning the plugs.
More fuel would cause fouling and less heat; less fuel (a leaner mixture) creates more heat.
Very, very cool. So rare to see restored German aircraft. Thanks for posting.
ME109 is the best plane ever!
Beautiful machinen
I love the WWII fighters
A legend again on the top of our heads! God bless the crew and the pilot who fly this little proud plane!
Why do I laugh when the smoke comes out of the supercharger intake?
I laugh at the same thing. I have years of experience on various types, including B747-400, but just like you, I cannot stop giggling when I see an old piston engine farting and burping and coughing :->
Sorry, this comment was meant for THIS thread, not the one where you discussed the takeoff problem. "....My daughter she was 6 at the time, when we were at Toulouse air show. She said, "dad how come the airplane is farting?"...."
Jean-Pierre Burgogne Hahaha, no worries:-> My grandson started saying the exact same thing when we were watching an air show in Everett, in the US.
I know right? xD
The 109 is my favourite of all the WW2 warbirds and the 'Emil' my favourite 109. Beautiful aeroplane. Rick M
watching this without the swastika on the verticle stabilizer is like drinking a virgin shot of tequila...just can't be done.oh wait...that FW-190 is like a straight shot of white LIGHTNING!
So true, so true.
so beautiful, thank you for such a lovely film, I will add the link to my ww2 pages
109 always looks a bit sinister, as it should!
falconeaterf15 the spitfire is beautiful, the mustang is pretty but yes the 109 certainly is an angry looking beast. In combat I'd give the advantage to the allied fighters later in the war but for looks, it is the 109 for me each time
Ianpoulton79 I disagree on the most esthetic looking fighter of WWII has to be the P-51 Mustang. I guess it all is the eyes of the beholder.
falconeaterf15 always looked deadly.
lawyers9 I'll tell you what guys the fw 190 must be up there, but it was a fighter bomber, what about the p 38 lightning ,me 109 bf.is probably my fave, but you've got the spitfire, which was the saviour of Britain but it was obviously the hurricane which was a much better gun platform and shot down more bombers than the spit, which was an interception against fighters, while the brilliant hurricanes killed the bombers and got no credit.
@@lawyers9 p51 is german design the 109 is the daddy
Deutsche Ingenieurskunst.
Those landings... WOW! ...not an easy thing thing to do in any 109!
Thanks
Nice aircraft the bf 109.
it is an amazing collection last time i saw the 109 the engine was being redone
ausgezeichnet, herr lieutnant !!!
Interesting tidbit about the canopy, would make sense as the E-3's rounded canopy seems to have less visibility. Cool
Yep, need to go and change my underwear.
Aliens 2000 I was thinking the same thing
Yes sir me too.
If i see those Beautiful Planes i become Goose bumps...
Very nice Machines, thx for this Video.
Greets from Germany !
Wonder how much it's worth?
Mere pennies... lots and LOTS of pennies. ;-)
+Fight to Fly Photography Mere tons of pennies, I'd wager. lol.
If you Ask me It's priceless!
+916fanatic1 priceless
About to make a 1/32 scale model of the E3... love that video!!!
Warbirds keep 'em flying!
Of course remember that Spain produced their version of the 109 as well, it is called the
Hispano Aviación HA-1112, powered generally with a Merlin engine, that used in it's rival the Spitfire.
