  • First of all, a big thank you goes to my dear patreons:

    - Mike Huynh
    - Lee Shannon
    - J. Tran
Your support is really appreciated. Thank you very much, Tom
In 9 min. the Messerschmitt BF 109 G from Artesania Latina is assembled bit by bit in some stopmotion like interpretation according to Erick Miotkes inspiring music track "dawn epilogue".
The kit in scale 1/16 is a multimedia kit with metal, plastic and rubber parts electrified to move the propeller and light the dashboard and navigation lights. The paint used for this kit is from Alclad II - metallics and mil-specs.
    #artesanialatina #alcladII
The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was a German World War II fighter aircraft that was, along with the Focke-Wulf Fw 190, the backbone of the Luftwaffe's fighter force. The Bf 109 first saw operational service in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War and was still in service at the dawn of the jet age at the end of World War II in 1945. It was one of the most advanced fighters when it first appeared, with an all-metal monocoque construction, a closed canopy, and retractable landing gear. It was powered by a liquid-cooled, inverted-V12 aero engine. It was called the Me 109 by Allied aircrew and some German aces, even though this was not the official German designation.

Side note: A properly black prop and spinner on a G where very rare. Almost all used RLM 70 which is a greenish black.
The green navigation light is on the right, red is on the left.

Enchanting. My old man would have loved your videos. Not only was he a model maker, and used to fly model planes via control line back in the day, he served in WWII. He was an engine mechanic for the R.A.A.F, and was seconded to the R.A.F.
So while he wouldn't have worked on one of these, he did work on Spitfires, among others. He also worked on the Catalina flying boats, both during and after the war. After the war he was part of the maintenance crew for the Catalinas that flew out of Rose Bay in Sydney for Qantas.

    This is just crazy!
Not only the model itself and the assembly of it but you did a stop-motion version!
Wikipedia states that 167 BF109G-1 was built between February and June in 1942. On average they produced 8 per week during that period.
This assembly took you six weeks.

Thank you very much for your detailed and painstaking work documenting the complex build process of this exquisitely detailed model. In performing arts college, my class also studied various types of animation including stop-motion animation, which is how I know just how much time and effort you must have put into this video. Even at 20 frames per second, that would amount to nearly 11,000 individual frames for 592 seconds of video. Truly superb work, and I applaud your dedication and craftsmanship!
Just out of curiosity, this is a G model, isn't it? I've built enough 109 kits over the past few decades to recognise those large, round bulges covering the ammunition feed trays for the twin heavy MG's that was the trademark of most G series versions. 😉
Thanks very much for sharing this beautiful work with us. Whilst some amongst us (your common, garden variety Philistines and the like) may not appreciate all of your hard work and dedication, I most certainly do!

Hello TOM.... I was waiting for such a video for a long long time. This kit was my last year christmas gift from me to me. However I was wondering if someone would ever be able to tell me about the build because I never found any review. Of course, and as always your builds are outstanding and the way you film them in stopmotion are even more fantastic. Could you please tell me about the challenges you experienced during this build. I printed the instructions because I found it would be more easy to follow... above 300 pages !!!... I probably will wait a while before starting this project although. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR EXPERIENCE TOM.

You're welcome. First of all I used my smartphone for the PDF instructions. It worked very well for me. Some of the instructions are wrong. F.e. the position lights colors are switched (and I followed) and the trim wheel chains should be positioned between the two wheels, not outside as instructed. The box art shows the correct way. I had problems with the wings mounting. The top holes for the related mounting parts have to be controlled and more opened before assembling. It's very important you clean up every part and dry fit it first before gluing in place. Especially the holes for the LEDs need some special attention. And last but not least: the undercarriage is a major problem if you want the model standing on its own feet. You cannot fix the standing position. It holds it position by the wheels rubber friction on the ground only... Beside this the build was challenging but interesting.

Tom, there should be an Oscar category for your work because you would have a mantel full of gold statues. Just brilliant!
