  • Welcome to That Pedal Show! Please subscribe to our channel and visit our store www.thatpedals...
    We often get asked about our personal guitars and amps that crop up on That Pedal Show, so this series/playlist seeks to answer some of the more common questions.
    In this video Dan talks about a relatively recent (2017) addition to the Steinhardt Guitar Family, the Fender Ed O’Brien EOB Sustainer Stratocaster. Ed is of course one of the guitar players in legendary/pioneering/uber famous band, Radiohead, within which he creates incredible sonic textures that are fundamental to their often otherworldly, ethereal sound. (And yes, Dan builds Ed's pedalboard and consults on his rig).
    We’d strongly urge you to also watch Fender’s awesome video on Ed and the guitar, as much for the info and insight as the inspiring cinematography. Go here for that… • The Ed O'Brien Sustain...
    Dan is playing through a 1961 Vox AC30 (Celestion Alnico Blue speakers) and a Marshall 1987x 50-watt Plexi reissue (Celestion G12H Anniversary speakers), running together.

    "Ed is THE guitar player in Radiohead".
    Haha, well that's kind of nice to hear since Jonny and Thom do seem to get all the attention ;)

    • @AngelicusImmortus
      @AngelicusImmortus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Micah Buzan Ed is the out and out guitar player. Thom plays piano, guitar, electronics and writes the songs - Ed’s own words.
      Jonny does the emphasis parts on guitar, plays keyboards, electrics and does the orchestration on the tracks.
      You need to hear Thom play Clocks solo to hear how good he is. - on stage he adds the acoustic elements.
      Ed is awesome. One key that gets missed about it being a Mexican body etc was because ED wanted it to be cheaper so it wasn’t as restrictive a price range for younger, less well of players. He basically told Fender I want it affordable, so he pegged it personally to the £1000 mark.
      Signature models for all others add about £1000 just because of the name

    This looks to be a very versatile guitar. I’m a church musician and today we are basically cover bands; we might do a hymn and I️ pick up my classical, then strum on an acoustic if there are parts, and recently many uses for ambient electric sounds, I️ think inspired by Radiohead, are popping up - and yes that Guitar might be my next. But taking versatility in another direction, you might guess I️ really would jump at an excellent acoustic simulation and the question of 12 string electric, piezo, or pedals to get me there. I’m not all that good so the pretension of getting 3 guitars on stands seems out of place. Of course I️ went down the dark road of digital but learned I️ seek a more dynamic sound. This program has been huge for me, so thanks. But maybe you can think to deal with the acoustic electric switcheroo I️ do every Sunday.

    HEY DAN! i know this is your video and i think you will like this too but this is for mick i have found THE BEST TS STYLE PEDAL EVER MADE!!! i know you have heard of hudson electronics you have played and loved the broadcast overdrive well i give you the......................HUDSON SIDECAR! it has a TS style front end with germanium clipping with active bass and treble controls so you can boost or cut both and it has a lot more gain to it will go into fuzz like sounds at full gain.BUT the best thing for me was it gave me the best p. sayce like sounds i have ever got.i was so pumped after playing it i called my mum! she didn't know what i was on about but i just had to tell everybody i know.KILLER PEDAL!!!

    Dan points out that the sustainer still functions when not plugged into an amp (yet the strat remains plugged in). Please clarify, if this strat is not plugged in to an amp and the sustainer is on, will you hear the sustainer functioning anyway “acoustically”?

    • @delanerouse7574
      @delanerouse7574 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you will. It won't be amplified (since its not plugged in) but you will see/hear/feel the sustainer doing what it does.

    Very interesting strat!!!!!!!!!!
    Daniel Lanois talked about the invention of the sustainer many years ago. He had the two prototypes and gave one of them to the edge.They called it the "inifinate guitar". The result was the song "with or without you". In the song there is a nice combination of sustainer and shimmer.
    The Edge now uses the Ed O'Brian strat, too.

      Ed mentioned that single coild bridge pickups tend to squeal horribly when the sustainer is on. That's probably the reason why there's no coil splitting function as it would confuse some people.

      + Rob Flax - Like Sam Anderson said, they're available through Reverb and eBay, and you can get a humbucker style too. However, they require a 9 volt battery, so installation is not so straightforward as simply replacing your existing pup.

    Hey Dan, I recently bought a EOB Strat. Loving it! My quetion is about batteries. Mine drain quite quickly. I was wondering if you have played with the strength of the sustainer pickup for better battery life? Currently I do use rechargeable 9v batteries, but they still go quickly.....Any suggestions?? Or does all that tone simply come at a price?

    • @AndrewAviles
      @AndrewAviles 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hope you figured it out, but you likely need to unplug the guitar, at least that's the case with active pickups. If not, may just need to remove the battery after sessions

    • @LunaticTheCat

      Batteries last about a week for me. I've just accepted that I need to replace them often, I wouldn't turn down the strength of the sustainer pickup.

    I just tried one and I loved it! Extra amazing that yours was a gift from Ed himself! You mentioned that it ships with 9 gauge strings- and that you swapped them for 11's- what (apart from the normal set-up- intonation, etc.) needs to be changed to properly accommodate 11's (which is what I also play). Does the nut need to be changed?

    Love my EOB but Im finding that the bottom E resonants a lot more than the rest of the strings on my setup. Can anyone offer any advice on how a can set up my EOB properly to stop this uneven resonance on the lower string? I havent really changed the out of the box setup. Please help.

      Sounds like you need to change the pickup height it may just be too high but if its just the low strings strats traditionally have the bass side on the pickup lower than the treble

    Any word if they will release new colors ? And say a builder goes and paints one, could the electronics be a tricky problem to put back in place (considering the sustainer) ?

    If someone can vouch if this is a full on strat I am gonna buy it this Easter. Does it have a the usual strat neck pickup jangle, 4th position chime, 2nd position quack (like Sultans of Swing) and bridge pickup bite/twang for country? I am looking to buy this strictly for clean stuff and to play just one song using the sustainer (U2 WOWY) as I already have a Les Paul for more heavy work. Please don't recommend an Ebow as it's clumsy and I dont like Fernandes guitars. What I need is a full on Fender Strat that sounds like a usual strat with the sustainer system already installed.

    • @AndrewAviles
      @AndrewAviles 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think this is the only guitar that will tick all your boxes without any modding. If you only need the sustainer for one song, and don't plan to use it much otherwise, you might be better off getting a pedal for sustain and harmonic shifting (since you're opposed to the e-bow) and using another guitar that can you you the single coil chime you're looking for, this is humbucker single humbucker, so you get a little quack and chime but its still pretty thick sounding overall because of the two humbuckers.

    It would have been nice for some explanation on how the sustainer works, it settings and what the switches do. A video just on the sustainer would be great. Love the guitar though, I already want one!

    • @RyanRenteria
      @RyanRenteria 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Arthur & Pippa's Vlogs the sustainer uses the bridge and neck pickups to create a magnetic field that keeps whatever notes you’re playing ringing out. The switches are on/off, and fundamental/harmonic/blend. The rear tone knob on the strat is replaced by a sustainer intensity knob.

    • @thebrowns1017
      @thebrowns1017 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I knew the bit about the magnetic resonance but I am interested in what the knobs & switches do sound wise. Let's hope for a more detailed look at it from the Pedal Show.

    • @fletches4084
      @fletches4084 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. Or at least not if if functions like a sustainiac. It generates a magnetic field which acts on the strings to keep them vibrating. Kind of like an invisible electronic pick. That's why you need the battery.

    • @RyanRenteria
      @RyanRenteria 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, it needs a battery, but the neck pickup works on its own if you down turn the sustainer on.

    • @LunaticTheCat
      @LunaticTheCat 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fletches4084 It works as a regular pickup when the sustainer is off. When the sustainer pickup is one the guitar will always use the bridge pickup.
