    With his Rorschach blots of tone color and phantasmal phrasing and ambient tones, Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien can be a pretty painterly musician. And really, it’s neither an exaggeration nor a surprise to say that his new signature Stratocaster often feels like a cross between paintbrush and guitar (as well as some alien lyre). Its shape-shifting potency comes from a Fernandes Sustainer system that extends the Stratocaster’s basic sound palette dramatically. And at times, it plays and sounds like a different instrument altogether-even while feeling as comfortable, inviting, and expressive in all the ways a Stratocaster should.
    But the best thing about the Ed O’Brien is the way it prompts invention and makes you rethink your own playing. Maximizing its potential takes sensitivity, an open mind, and a little practice. And occasionally you might have to bend to the instrument’s will as much as your own. But the musical payoffs for such open-mindedness can be huge. In the right hands, and with the right mindset, the Ed O’Brien Stratocaster is a very powerful musical tool.
    The Fernandes Sustainer system is not a new invention. It’s appeared on Fernandes’ own line of sustainer guitars and is available as a kit. Like an EBow, it uses a battery-driven source of magnetic energy-in the neck pickup-to vibrate the strings from beneath.

      I'm not sure about Tom Lee because I live in eastern Canada, but L&M still have not listed them on the website. Cosmo Music has them listed as coming soon for $1,499.
      I want to put my hands on one before I buy just to make sure it's right for me, but I would have no problems ordering from Tom Lee Music (visited one of the Vancouver stores when I was there in 2015) or even Steve's and Axe Music all of whom I've dealt with before.

    • @andrewpasco1366
      @andrewpasco1366 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I went in to L&M in Toronto and they can order one in 6 weeks, but like you, i'm skeptical of buying a guitar without having tested it. i tried a standard strat with an identical neck profile for the feel, but i'm still worried about the larger frets.

    • @MitchRossMusician
      @MitchRossMusician 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The larger frets aren't an issue for me, but I understand how they would be for some people. Especially if you're used to standard strats.
      I really want to make sure this guitar fits what I'm doing, and the direction I'm going musically.
      They'll be in soon enough. I guess.

  • @IvorThomas
    @IvorThomas 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    John, I have one of these EOB Strats too, and it took some tweaking to get it to work well. 1. the nut wasn't cut right and the neck needed a truss rod adjust, so it had crummy action. 2. The battery was reverse grounded so it was sucking battery even when not plugged in. 3. there is a little pot inside that back cavity to control the strength of the sustainer (as well as pickup height adj). As it is now, this guitar plays great as a 'Strat' and it can even sustain chords quite well *clean*. I often practice with it plugged-in but un-amplified. And that sweet, sweet neck profile and the 10" radius is perfect, and is what sold me on it initially. This is a lifetime keeper for me.

    • @z101dc1

      I have gone through 3 different EOBs and have had problems with all of them. Any recommendations?
      Issues across all three:
      1. High action(issues here still after adjusting)
      2. Poor intonation
      3. Buzzing noise that is not fret buss or pick up hum
      4. The strings sound muted and muffled despite putting new strings on
      5. Overall the guitar is not
      6. Pickguard not flat to body of the guitar,
      7. The tuning machines on all three guitars were terrible, They slip then suddenly pop into place and are so sensitive that it is very easy to overshoot the targeted pitch.
      I don't want to give up on owning an EOB but that might be what I do. For the price, this guitar really should be made with better materials. I am not impressed by the feel or the sound of the pickups other than the ability to sustain with the Fernandez Sustainer pickup. I do dig the neck shape although I believe it needs a complete overhaul in order to play right.

    I was considering getting this but as I tried it, the sustainer just don’t react the way you would anticipate when using an e-bow. You have more control with e-bow. Also with using e-bow, you don’t need to swap a proper strat sound. And e-bow is cheaper if you are after that kind of sound. And you can use it with other guitars you have. But this will make rock and roll crazy sounds I give you that.

    Help! I bought this guitar after seeing this vid. I’ve done a decent set up on it, but… it’s barely sustaining! In octave mode I can get it, but not consistently. It’s a fight to get sustain. Natural and harmonic mode don’t sustain at all so I’m really missing out on the versatility it offers.
    I’ve changed the battery, adjusted pickup heights to suit and sorted the intonation. Still feels really ‘stiff’ though.

    This is a really interestingly built Strat! The bridge pickup is hot and excels with the dirty tones, as well as being beautiful played clean. The Texas Special middle pickup is reverse wound, so it reduces hum/noise significantly and the Texas specials in general are incredibly nice pickups (although only really for clean tones and light overdrive at the most. I installed a full set on my Strat and they sounded horrible with any serious distortion. Ended up putting the stock pickups back in after a while because they handle distortion far better), then the sustainer pickup seems to really boot the others. After all, who the hell uses a neck pickup on a Strat anyway? Might as well switch it out for an augmentation.

      For a lot of people, the neck pu is the only one they use on a Strat.

    Does anyone here own this guitar? I want user feedback as I am seriously interested in it, but not sure with the sustainer function and extra knobs. I would appreciate honest feedback, any comment would be highly valuable. Thanks.

    If someone can vouch if this is a full on strat I am gonna buy it this Easter. Does it have a the usual strat neck pickup glassy jangle, 4th position chime, 2nd position quack (like Sultans of Swing) and bridge pickup bite/twang for country? I am looking to buy this strictly for clean stuff and to play just one song using the sustainer (U2 WOWY) as I already have a Les Paul for more heavy work. Please don't recommend an Ebow as it's clumsy and I dont like Fernandes guitars. What I need is a full on Fender Strat that sounds like a usual strat with the sustainer system already installed.

      @adamg9523 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      E Franklin I’m the same man, been looking for a strat to play WOWY. If you’re into U2 you won’t be able to play All I want is you the way Edge plays because he goes up to the 22nd fret and this only has 21

    I've been playing guitar for 24 years and would consider myself certainly a proficient player, but I know zero about the technical aspects of the actual guitar, and so my question: What on earth is a neck radius?

    • @montag4516
      @montag4516 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's the curvature of the fretboard, from low string to high string. Lower radius numbers, such as a 7.25 radius, means more curvature. Higher radius numbers, such as 9.5, have less curvature. Some guitar types, such as most classical guitars, have a flat fretboard with no curvature. Radius, along with other factors, makes a very big difference in how a guitar will feel and play in one's hand.

    I hate to have to tell you, but that’s not a 55 Strat with a clownburst like that... maybe a 55 neck on a 65 body?

    sorry for this, but that neck pickup just sounds like total shit to me before the sustainer function is turned on... the last thing I want is for it to last forever. none of the notes together are identifiable to me with gain added.
