Pre-WGU | I can't choose my class order???

  • Well... this was unexpected and I'm kinda bummed out about it. It's not the end of the world, but I need to be prepared just in case WGU won't let me take the classes in the order I planned on taking them. If you're new to the channel, I've been making videos about my WGU journey. As of right now, I'm still transferring credits and I plan on starting my first day on January 1st.

    Hey, I’m currently in my first term at WGU and my mentor has been very good at letting me dictate what classes I want to take. If you explain to your mentor your situation and your goals then I’m sure they will be more lenient in regards to the schedule. Also, I’ve been able to work on two classes at a time, typically a class with a performance assessment paired with a class that has an objective assessment. If you have any other questions I’d be willing to try and answer them.

    I agree, this is weird to me because regular state schools don't do this. Unless there's prerequisites. Advisors are there to advise and answer questions.

    Since no one has said it, im not sure if you've found out already. The cloud class doesn't require you to pass the CCSP anymore. It's an inhouse exam. Once you pass you get 1 free voucher to attempt the CCSP. However, you do have to still pass the SSCP which would have the same scheduling limitation, but I dont think it has the same exam fail restrictions.

    Hey man. I watched a few of your videos. I must say it has been really helpful, as I am contemplating enrolling in this WGU program as well. Mostly because of the cost! Was there a second choice school for you? Thanks

      I wasn't planning on going to to back to school until I found WGU. I didn't even look into any other schools. I just felt it was the perfect school for me. It was mostly due to cost and how quickly I could finish.

  • @GentlemenMonkey

    I've got 12 classes left with my BS in Cybersec and today was the first time I encountered this. Same mentor I've had for 3 years, she's telling me she has to get approval from her boss and the boss's boss to deviate from a linear class schedule now. Not sure if I'm getting fed a line or if WGU policy is changing. I've been studying hard for the CySa on my own dime with 3rd party resources and was planning on attempting in about a week but now they want me to take like 7 other classes first, including the ISC2 SSCP. My mentor has always been super cool so I'm inclined to think this is some ill-considered top down policy thing. I've been relatively happy with WGU all this time but this really blindsided me. Frustration level = buffer overflow.

    I have Jan 1st start date ...was going to go with Phoenix before I saw wgu and seeing wgu is a bachelor's over a AS in cyber security I'm really hoping this was the move lol Goodluck so awesome on the 70% completion start to the program I kind of going less prepared.

  • @Pwnappetit
    @Pwnappetit 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Okay so I’m doing the cybersec bachelors.
    So the first term, your program mentor is supposed to assign the first four classes. You’re not supposed to be able to get out of this. Once you complete those four, the rest of the schedule it can be entirely up to you.
    NOW all of the mandatory things like the above and the mandated bi monthly phone call are entirely up to the program mentor. If you talk to them and tell them your experience and your certs they will probably understand and work with you. For example, after I completed my first four, my mentor has me on as needed calls and will let me assign whatever class in whatever order I want.
    If your mentor is not listening to you, you can get another one. It’s not unheard of for folks to go through a few mentors to find one they vibe with.
    Also for CCSP. The class is actually an in house pre assessment and exam. When you complete the class, they give you the voucher for CCSP.

    • @Pwnappetit
      @Pwnappetit 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lastly, I’ve heard of people completing their term classes and instead of assigning one class at a time they have been able to add in multiple. A few folks have been able to add the rest of their degree plan in a term if they were confident they could pass in time.

    This type of institution would have saved me many mistakes, in the beginning of my journey, with the first university I attended. I didn’t have the guidance. I was lost. I ended up registering for macroeconomics before taking microeconomics. I attended multiple accounting classes which I felt confused in on day 1….only to realize I was supposed to take another class BEFORE this one…yet the university didn’t specify that nor have it listed as a prerequisite.

    I'm scheduled to start Nov 1st. My enrollment counselor was fantastic!! My mentor hasn't impressed me yet but we've only had one meeting. I feel the timing of the responses could be much better especially if this is who I'm expected to reach out to throughout my program. Our second meeting is tomorrow and I'm hoping things will improve soon. I will request another mentor if needed because this delayed response method is not acceptable to me. I'll see how things are by the first week.

    You never going to have full control in a institution because they have to make sure they are doing everything to support students. From kindergarten to college some students need structure. The school will get a bad reputation if they let people enroll for six months with no supervision

    • @CameronEvolved
      @CameronEvolved  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My main concern is the mentor assigning me classes in a random order that doesn't help me prepare for the next class or purposely slows me down. I'm fine with supervision. I just hope they are more helpful than they are harmful since they'll be my main contact and will be with me the whole time I attend WGU.
