Thanks, this is definitely the best LI painting series out there. Loved the Imperial Fist guides, can't wait to see the Solar Auxillia in all their glory.
I agree with you here. At this scale this is how you need to tackle the project. They look great. The amount of effort vs the result is amazing. I'm not sure if I'll be picking this up but if I do I'll definitely take my inspiration from you.
Thanks so much for this! Had the sentinels set up for painting by sub assemblies and was dithering over the ogryns. You've talked me down back to sanity, these look great!
Aw that’s great to hear! Yes please don’t drive yourself crazy, put them on a table and stand up and look down on them, you’ll see how much/little you’ll to do 😄
I really appreciate how down to Earth you are about the time sink that’s required for these models and how that informs your painting of the stuff you’re working on. I’m going all in on Solar Auxilia starting with the infantry box and some Baneblades(along with Lightnings I have painted already from Aeronautica), so seeing these tutorials to really see what getting to grips with these models in a realistic way looks like has filled me with a lot of confidence about my chances of getting all of these models painted!
That’s so good to hear, very happy to know the videos are helping 🙌 and yes, even my “normal” scale tutorials are always the same, you need to be able to achieve results that you can easily replicate instead of half started projects that people never have time or motivation to finish!
I think what you have said and done is 100% bang on. The models look super, especially for this scale wargaming. I used to play the old Epic - for me, the table was a whole battleground with salients, tactics etc (kinda like battles within a main battle). The size of say, a 6 x 4 table just looked gorgeous - so much for the eye to take in and the actual quality of painting was immaterial. For sure, some people used to add a little more to their figures but it became a question of diminishing returns and simply NOT worth the effort.
Sweet! I love the Solar Auxilia! I am doing them for an army for regular sized Horus Heresy! They’re a blast paint! I hope that the mystery army is them in plastic!
I’m also hoping that too, especially now we’ve seen a few more hints of how they could look in this set! They’re such a cool army, we need them in plastic asap!
Brilliant as ever. It's great to see Solar Auxilia painted in colours other than the box art. They need more colour schemes! Really like the Sentinel model and would love to see them come out in 28mm scale. Thanks again.
Quick and Easy sometimes that's the best way. I think they came out great, it makes me want Solar Auxilia in bigger scale for HH 2.0. Great video as always Andy, I find these Epic videos are great it has that instant gratification to paint feel about them
Looking forward to it. I’m no stranger to the scale but I rarely finish my projects due to over complicating my recipes. Your approach to these models is inspiring in its simplicity and yields maximum results for minimal effort (and they look amazing).
Good video. Since you asked, my only critique would be that at this scale you should push the contrast much further. You could do that by painting the yellow parts ivory first then the yellow contrast. Overall great job.
That’s a fair point! It was a toss up before spraying them white so the contrast seemed brighter, or saving time with the silver spray! As I said too, I didn’t want the yellow standing out as much as the space marines either!
Love all your content , me I'm still doing orktober , lol......anymore ork tutorials are much appreciated ..........however variety is never a bad thing. The way you paint actually helps me just to get started , sometimes it's such a horrific experience I hesitate to even start painting and quench my thirst spraying spoons with new colors I've accumulated ........sound weird I know but it's my baggage .......thanks for the content
There will definitely be more orks in the future don’t worry! Just trying to get through these tutorials before the release! That’s great to hear that I can help in any way. I know it can be daunting to start, but starting is the hard part. And remember it’s only paint, you can always fix any mistakes. Set yourself a small goal to achieve instead of looking at large piles of models to paint, even if it’s a random model not connected to anything you are painting. Just get some paint on a model and enjoy it without expectations that it needs to be a certain standard etc. having spoons painted for reference is actually a great idea! If you ever have any questions or need help let mw know!
These look great! Only thing I might do on mine that is different is give them a drybrush of a lighter silver before I go in with the contrast, just to highlight the more raised areas. Shouldn't take more than an extra 20 seconds
Keeping them slightly different from main Imperial Fists is perfect, only thing I would do differently is paint the rocket tips red and maybe just use one spray rather than the two spray technique. Don't think there'd be that much of a contrasting difference between the two sprays and one spray at that scale. Can't wait for the terrain stuff as well.
The leadbelcher spray doesn’t adhere as well to straight plastic which is why I’d still recommend the two sprays but it’s up to you! And yes tiny red rocket tips would look class!
there a contrast paint that adds a tan effect over the metalic? I tried agaros dunes, skeletonhorde, and snakebite leather but the first two are too transluscent and the latter isn't the color I'm going for. I did a deserty theme for my AI planes and I want to get close enough to that to match
Loved this video - huge Solar Auxilia fan here and GW's video on painting them was crap - so is there a part 2 to this video, where you cover the poor bloody infantry? 🙂
The ogryns and sentinels look like they might be big enough to do camo on, by say stippling two colours, basically grey base coat then stipple or sponge black followed by a light grey, the same way you can do battle damage on a 28mm piece. Would still be quick and would be a way of distinguishing them from their Astartes counterparts, like you said in the video you don’t want them to stand out the same way astartes do as they aren’t shock troops for one thing, I’m sure your average human guardsman is looking for any little advantage he can get to stay alive on the battlefields of the heresy. Only problem is I wonder if the tanks would be too big for it to work and the infantry ofc way too small, what do you think Andy?
I love your technique. I'm probably going to use a stone color for my Solar Auxilia, as I'm going Battle of Tallarn for my armies. Can anyone recomend a roughly stone-colored contrast or speed paint?
@MediocreHobbies I don't see any other faction that needs it like custodes have alot of plastic daemons won't get more as u can use the 40k AoS range so that leaves SA so would make sense
Having painted FoW for years I can confirm how easy it is to paint 100+ models. I advise to anyone wanting to actually paint an army for epic go to the FoW and Team Yankee painters.
Ok, I figured out your problem. You are lacking contrast on the models. At such a small scale the models need to pop, more so then 28mm+ models. Contrast paints don't actually allow you to do this. I would guess you will need to highlight and maybe use an oil wash to blackline.
That’s not really the look I’m going for here, I think the infantry shouldn’t stand out too much compared to all the rest of the army but always good to hear ideas!
At this scale its all fair to cut some corners and save time, at the table no one noticed details and a uniform army will look amazing anyway! But it breaks my heart that you didnt paint at least the heads on the ogryns a skintone XD
Thanks, this is definitely the best LI painting series out there. Loved the Imperial Fist guides, can't wait to see the Solar Auxillia in all their glory.
Aw that’s so kind, glad you’re enjoying them!

Thanks man, definitely good to get the perspective right from the start!
Another great video - your videos have convinced me to get this 😊 can’t wait to paint it
Aw cool, you should enjoy it!

Thanks so much for watching and glad you enjoyed! I’d love to see them come out in “full size” too…maybe that mystery codex 🤞🤞
Loving the tutorials definitely going to be following g for more
Great to hear that 🙌

I love your Old World and Legions Imperialis videos, they are my two favorite games at the moment!
Aw great to hear that! Nice mix of content there!

I'm not getting LI but love watching your vids!
Aw cheers John, appreciate it!
Thanks I’m going with this scheme but with park skin green for a salamander looking solar auxilia

Awesome to see all the epic scale minis
Glad your liking the content pal.
They look great like that also ty ur the only SA paint guide I have seen
Thanks man
Definitely looking Forward to painting my Iron Hands and Agathonian Domain, along with House Terryn and Legio Astorum!
Oh nice. Good times ahead.
This is great 😊, imma going to switch the imperial fists for terradon turquoise (no emperor botherers here thank you). Thanks for the video
Glad you liked it!
These look great! Only thing I might do on mine that is different is give them a drybrush of a lighter silver before I go in with the contrast, just to highlight the more raised areas. Shouldn't take more than an extra 20 seconds
Ye that mite add something.
Epic scale Ratlings would be awesome...!!
I know! I wish it wasn’t heresy setting!
Keeping them slightly different from main Imperial Fists is perfect, only thing I would do differently is paint the rocket tips red and maybe just use one spray rather than the two spray technique.

Thanks so much, glad you like it!
Great stuff, would love to see terrain soon please!
Ye for sure doing some terrain soon.
I've been painting 6 and 10mm for years. . Winsor and Newton Nut brown ink is a great wash at these sorts of scales
It probably is, I try to stick to Gw paints for GW tutorials to just make things easier for people, but definitely will check that out, thank you!
Love them, personally I think the yellow gets lost a bit unfortunately and might need a little something to get it to pop
Totally fair! Maybe switch the silver spray if you want them to pop more, I’m happy with them looking more grungy and low-key!
@@MediocreHobbiesmight be an idea and love the tutorial
looks great! Kinda wanna get some and paint them in a Cadian scheme
That would be awesome to see!
you sir are a painting beast
Haha thanks man
Enjoyed the video, keep the LI videos coming !
So many more to come haha
So helpful! Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
Looks solid!!!
Thank you!
Please get back to legions imperialis, would love to see your solar tanks painted up.
Looks good man. Where did you get that superglue btw? I can only find regular bottles with the too-large nozzle
It’s from a store here called Dealz, not sure where you’re based but it’s like a dollar store/mix of everything type of store!
there a contrast paint that adds a tan effect over the metalic? I tried agaros dunes, skeletonhorde, and snakebite leather but the first two are too transluscent and the latter isn't the color I'm going for. I did a deserty theme for my AI planes and I want to get close enough to that to match
It sounds like you tried all the paints I would have suggested.
love these vids, keep em comin
Thanks, will do! 🙌
Fantastic as always.
May I ask, what super glue are you using?
Cheap dollar/euro/pound store superglue. Works great for me.
Quick Question: Do you put these models together with Super Glue rather than plastic glue? (and which super glue do you use?)
Yes Keith with super glue! It’s just quicker! These ones are from dealz!
Does the core set come with solaux paint scheme ideas? There is a transfer sheet with eight regiments but I don’t know any of them at all lol
You can do whatever schemes you like for solar auxilia, there’s not more info out there on them so you can create your own lore/scheme you like best!
Loved this video - huge Solar Auxilia fan here and GW's video on painting them was crap - so is there a part 2 to this video, where you cover the poor bloody infantry? 🙂
There will indeed be a second video this week.
The ogryns and sentinels look like they might be big enough to do camo on, by say stippling two colours, basically grey base coat then stipple or sponge black followed by a light grey, the same way you can do battle damage on a 28mm piece. Ye im a bit nervous to do the tanks for them and try make them match. Video coming soon lol
Love your videos. - What kind/brand of glue do you use?
It’s just superglue from a cheap euro store
Does it come with the "long nozzle"?@@MediocreHobbies
@@ronstarius it does indeed. Well it’s an extra big you just push on.
I love your technique. I'm probably going to use a stone color for my Solar Auxilia, as I'm going Battle of Tallarn for my armies. Can anyone recomend a roughly stone-colored contrast or speed paint?
Agaros dunes or skeleton horde would be my choices. Agaros being the darker one and Skelton horse being the lighter shade.
@@MediocreHobbies Thank you very much!
Love this
Thanks so much!
Lovely work! Where is the tutorial video that shows how you do your bases? That scheme would go perfect w/ my Word Bearers.
It’s in the description! There’s a few videos now on the channel for basing!
Dry nice, but watching your videos is definitely breaking my will and possibly my wallet lol 😅
Hahah sorry I think.
SA will get a plastic range for HH they will be the new army announced so the sentinels will be coming
You sound very confident 😄
@MediocreHobbies I don't see any other faction that needs it like custodes have alot of plastic daemons won't get more as u can use the 40k AoS range so that leaves SA so would make sense

But it breaks my heart that you didnt paint at least the heads on the ogryns a skintone XD
Haha nobody’s gonna notice when they’re on the table 😄
1000% with on fast and dirty done by 5.30 for infantry
Yeah it just makes sense when you look at the size of the armies needed!
thats not yellow dude... thats green af.
Hahahaha
The infantry should be gritty and dirty they are on the front lines with no rest they are the cannon fodder
Yeah agreed!
Would love to see you do the terrain!
I second that, especially the road tiles, which I haven't seen anyone review yet.
I talked a little bit about the road tiles in a vlog in my Patreon! Not sure if they’re going to be popular 😄
Red tips on the missles in the pods coulda given the Sentinels just that extra PoP. 🫡
Good idea!
