It's finally time to paint some tiny space marines. @officialwarhammer sent me a rather epic package of Legions Imperialis goodies to paint up for you guys and of course I choose the best Legion, Imperial Fists. Normally yellow can be tricky but at this scale, a simple coat of contrast paint and you're done! My advice for anyone starting a Legions Imperialis army? Keep it simple. Make sure you stand back from your miniatures and get an idea of how small these guys will look on your battlefield before pouring hours into details that will never been seen. Same goes for the bases, pick something you can easily replicate! Hope you enjoy the video, and let me know what you think, and what else you'd like to see soon in the Legions Imperialis series!

That’s totally fair if you feel that way, honestly painting them vaguely “right” and stepping well back from them works too 😄
Was actually happy to let this one slide past me until I watched you paint these guys. It really does look like fun and I still have my old Epic stuff to this day.

You can still play with your older stuff though! Bases would have to change for certain games but there’s no reason not to dig out your old stuff and see if you like the new rules etc before buying into it! Old epic was 6mm and these are 8mm!

Okay, I had absolutely ZERO interest in this game just because I didn't need another project to add to a list of backlogs.
However, after watching you paint them on sprue and just crank them out, I'm caught.
This looks like a really fun way to approach the hobby from a slightly different angle and I'm onboard.

They look fantastic! I only ordered the core box for now to avoid a tiny scale pile of shame alongside my big scale one… also ordered militarium green contrast to do Salamanders. Two weeks is too far away!!!

Are you still planning on doing videos on the other legions? If not, any tips on doing Thousand Sons? I have a recipe for the larger versions, but I'm not sure how well it would work at Epic scale.
I do have some future plans. Old world has derailed a few of them but I will get back.

Thank you for making the tutorial video. Very well done 10/10, i am excited for the release, planning on making a salamanders force. But i will make the green less vibrant, compared to the usual salamanders green color is a bit OTT. Hey just a recommendation for another video,, can you do a basing variations video, so basically, a tutorial video on making bases for different worlds. (Wastelands, Grey ruins, Mars style, and so on. Thanks Andy 👍

I just got into Imperalis, want to play Loyalist Emperors Children. Your vid gave me a lot of confidence that this is managable. Tho i do worry abkut the banner as banners are skmething i put a lot of effort into. The only transfers i have are the one for the thunderhawk which was the first thing i bought.

I love the style you've gone for, curious how you would do Dark Angels... I'm thinking contrast Black Templar armour, contrast Blood Angels guns, then layer Leadbelcher for things like mags etc... Nuln oil wash the lot...

Imperial fists are a much better choice to show off what you can do at this scale, GW should have used them again as the poster child of this edition!

They came out brilliant for the scale, which as you said is absolutely the way you need to look at it. I was thinking I’d be giving it a miss as I just didn’t have the time to invest in trying to detail each marine, you might have changed my opinion here. I’d love to see you tackle some of the larger scenery kits as they will likely be the biggest things you paint for epic right? And also the titans I mean who can resist a Titan 🤣.
Yeah the detail really isn’t important when you stand back from them 😄 I’ll be doing a whole series on everything possible, don’t worry!
Contrast paint will do more than enough work, then just pick out things like shoulder pads, weapons, banners.etc.

It was only like 4 paints lol. Imperial fists yellow contrast black templar contrast leadbelcher base retributor gold base Nuln out wash.
I'm sad this release was delayed the way it was. I was determined to get in on this new platform when GW announced it, but the delay really stunted my interest. I will eventually buy into it, I'm almost certain, just not right now.

Fantastic job! One thing I would like to ask, and I may have just missed it video, did you end up painting the bases of each of the Marines a tan color like your bases? It's very difficult to tell on video.

Awesome paint job. Tiny is an understatement, with these nodels. I would feel intimidated to paint them. Watching you doing them is a pleasure. Legion Imperialis is their way of protecting their IP vs calling them EPIC.

Did you have to do much cleaning up? Imagine mould lines could be an issue on teeny tiny marines.

How thick are the titian bases? GW made a big deal about the slimmer profile, but never mentioned how thin they actually are..
Exactly the same as the epic infantry. So super thin.

For Blood Angels would you use baal red contrast or blood angels red contrast? Using after that also nuln oil of course, but im not sure about the main colour…🤔
Blood angels contacts would be my choice.

Old epic was 6mm, these guys are 8mm, they were increased in size so you can see the different mark armour

It would! I don’t usually use airbrushes in tutorials because not everyone has access to one but they definitely speed things up!
So how long did it take to paint all 106?
About 6 hours work start to finish.
These things are like the little infantry dudes that you get in a risk board game. Also how long do I have to wait for the primer to dry?
Only takes a few minutes if it’s a thin spray coat! And yes, they are that small haha

Question for you sir. Why were your minis primed black, and then primer white before final painting?
It’s just my method I get a really sold coat of black. And the. Like a heavy dusting of white. So any parts left black will act as shadows for the models.

How do they compare size and detail-wise with something like Flames of War?
Detail is very nice. There is undercutting on the infantry due to them being one piece but so nice. A good bit better then flames. Although I still love flames.

Are you using Imperial Fist contrast straight from the pot? Or do you use any contrast thinner or water mixed in?
I never thin contrast paints unless I’ve specifically said it in the video, it’s almost always straight from the pot!
How are the mold lines? Can they be easily removed while they are still on the sprue?
There are none.

Sorry for the potentially thickie question, but why do you spray black then white, rather than just white? Does the initial black spray give some shading?
Not a silly question! The black is a full all over coat to cover up any grey plastic. The next coat makes it easier for contrast to stick to and anywhere you miss with paint will be black from the original primer so your eyes don’t notice it. It also adds shadow to the underside as well. I hope this makes sense?

Hey Andy, and how is the quality of these sculpts? I've seen some pictures which made me doubtful - stuff that looked like those 2001 Uruk-Hai shenanigans. Those kits are a bit pricey for the amount of plastic that we are actually getting out of it. You've mentioned that the stocks of the bolters go into the body of the marines, but on the photo's I've seen sometimes the arm, bolter and pauldron became one messy thing. From the distance you've showed those tiny Imperial Fists they looks really good (and you made me think about which Legion I would choose, which is awful, as I want to skip this game for at least a couple months), but I'd like to see your opinion as someone that actually held those miniatures in hand
He clearly states these are not perfect infantry and goes out of his way to point out the connection between the bolter and chest. Watch the video, it’s all there.
@DiscoDigi786 bolter and chest is not the same as bolter, chest and outer pauldron creating an abominable mess. A connection between chest and gun at this scale is to be expected, one half of a model looking as if someone held it near an open fire is awful, escpecially at this price point.
Read my post carefully, the 'stock goes into the body' bit from the video is mentioned there :)
I hadn’t noticed any shoulder pad melding. Just the gap between. Yeh Bolter and chest is all filled in. Hence me using black for the guns it hides it all very well. As a posed to silver that would make it jump out.
I did a lot of 15mm models and there is endless highlighting/shading potential. You just have to use stronger contrasts to do well. Still models this big are even EASIER to paint well than 28mm.
Of course there is, but I wouldn’t be bothered doing it 😄 you can paint anything to any degree you want, this is how I’ll be painting mine so I have time to play with them 😂

Trying to decide! I have tutorials for heresy schemes already on the channel, they’re obviously more detailed than these guys would be but they might still help though!
Great video. May well be doing the sons of Dorn myself. I’ve dabbled with smaller scales previously and one thing I recommend is putting some time into the bases. Well based models of this size can take a passable paint job on the figures and make them look really good.
Yeah especially when you’ll looking down at them and mostly just see the bases anyway 😂

E you could have primered in white and then airbrushed the yellow. That would have saved a lot of time. You could have airbrushed the Nuln oil on as well and knocked that out a whole lot faster?
And that’s something you can do. As I’m doing simple tutorials that everybody can use an not everybody has an airbrush I would have alienated a large portion of watchers.

Advice for future - when painting the infantry, do one side all at once, then the other side - you'll save 5-10 minutes just by not having to switch it around 300 times.
That’s actually bad advice. As contrast doesn’t deactivate when painting when you paint like that you will get a distinct line in the paint where the new and old paint meet each other. You need to get one compete coat on the model before any of it drys for the best result. So I knowing takes a little more time but it’s worth it.
