How to Remove Silences with Camtasia and Audiate

  • Silence Removal is possible in Camtasia 2022 due to the better integration with Audiate. This affords a few more options if you want to take advantage of it, particularly with audio editing, filler word removal (hesitations) and silence removal.
    Techsmith added a round-trip between the two applications and now you can send your audio files from within Camtasia, straight into Audiate for transcription, editing, cleaning up (and silence removal) and then re-exporting that audio back to Camtasia for further processing.
    In this video I show you how to do this and to remove silences (semi-automatically at the moment, but hopefully completely automatically in the near future). Techsmith has functions for deleting all hesitations and for silencing all pauses (but not REMOVING them, which is annoying). However, you can still remove all silences manually because Audiate does a great job of detecting and marking them.

    This is a great feature that I wish I could use. I get up to the point of identifying the pauses going through and deleting them then when I go to export in such a way that it puts the audio back in and edits the corresponding video automatically all I do is I get an ad. And then we'll only move any further. It promised me to download the newest version of camtasia. I got in touch with someone at techsmith they said that the last version of camtasia 2022 [2022.4.5] would be able to run this feature even if I'm using the trial version of audiate. I need this to work and I am now stuck. Fantastic video. It gets straight to the point. I will be subscribing to your channel.

    Thanks for this. I'm trying to decide between Audiate and Descript. I already have Camtasia. It looks like Descript is a bit more functional in a lot of ways, though some things are a bit janky, like adding custom music, but so far I'm enjoying it. Thanks for your tutorials.

      @@Graphicious Thank you for taking the time to reply. I do like Camtasia, but man. Editing takes soooo long. A lot of that is probably because I'm an amateur and don't use it all that often, but even so, Descript seems to take about the same amount of time BUT I'm producing an edited transcript at the same time, so a better use of my time it seems.

    Thank you. You're right I think it must be very easy for TechSmith, also I don't understand why they do not add this property. Your way also seems beneficial but what about if it becomes a video, then how silent video parts will be removed and synchronization is provided with the audio. I think it should be added directly to the camtasia, it should be removed also from video part together with audio. Thank you again, this method also resembled copying a paragraph from a pdf file to pasting to office word, then removing surplus enter parts of pdf to obtain a fluent paragraph in word :)

    thanks for the video, I was actually looking for a feature to fast-forward silence or typing as I've seen in many videos but couldn't find that in camtasia; is there a way to do that or is there a better app with this feature as well as other cool features like zooming stuff.

    Dear Sir, very grateful! How do I do this when I want to cut an even smaller piece of video footage than the space on Camtasia's arrow normally allows? Is it possible to crop millimeters from a video?

    • @Graphicious
      @Graphicious  ปีที่แล้ว

      The smallest unit you can edit/delete in Camtasia is one frame. You could try increasing the project framerate to 60fps rather than 30fps but that's it.

  • @toddhodgson
    @toddhodgson ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Cristi -- thank you for this. When you select "Edit Camtasia Timeline" (5:19), does it also edit the video portion? I've just started at a company that is all-in on Camtasia, and I'm hearing from others that this was a dealbreaker for them in the past, because while they could edit out filler words and silences in Audiate, they had to do the same thing on their video files, making it impractical.

    • @Graphicious
      @Graphicious  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, when you do that, it makes cuts in the same places in the Camtasia timeline and everything is in sync.

    Thanks for this video Cristi. I'm about to record a lot of training videos. I'd previously planned to use Screenflow and Descript. I heard your comment in the video about you using Descript. The addition of Audiate round trip in Camtasia 2022 seems significant. But Audiate is way behind Descript in sophistication and way too costly for what it does. I'd be really interested to hear your recommendations. Should I stick with Screenflow and Descript now to get current functionality or move to Camtasia and Audiate with the expectation of likely increasing integration and sophistication? Thanks!

    • @Graphicious
      @Graphicious  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally, I'd recommend that you use Camtasia + Descript for now. I know that Audiate can do the transcription, and certainly the Camtasia integration shown in this video is nice, but I'm a person who can't wait for it to 'get there', so I use Descript with my Camtasia workflow for now. I have not used Screenflow so I don't know everything it's capable of. If you're happy with it and are just looking for the added functionality of transcription and more, I'd still stick with Descript for now. Audiate is promising but it's far from doing everything I need... quite far.

    • @PeterButton
      @PeterButton 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for such a swift and effective response @@Graphicious! I'd be really interested to understand your workflow with Camtasia and Descript. I'm guessing that it's something like:
      1. Screen recording plus camera in Camtasia
      2. Export and bring into Descript
      3. Edit in Descript
      4. Export from Descript
      5. Back into Camtasia (or Final Cut/Premiere) for final polishing before publishing
      If you had any suggestions for improvements in workflow, I'd be very interested!

    • @Graphicious
      @Graphicious  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't usually go back so I'd recommend you try to minimize exports. Every time you export an mp4, you lose some quality, as mp4 is not lossless.
      One of my workflows is this:
      1. Record AND Edit everything in Camtasia
      2. Export and import into Descript
      3. Clean up, remove filler words, etc.
      4. Re-export and upload wherever.
      But I'm not always very picky with the cuts. If the cuts are too distracting, I will try to clean them up as I edit, in Camtasia, so the video that arrives in Descript is quite 'finished'.
      From Descript, if I want to re-export because I want the cuts/hesitations/fillerwords removed from the video, I will. If not, I will use the Descript transcript just for captions/subtitles. For the captions-only workflow, you have to be careful of the timings. If you make cuts, the captions won't be in sync. For TH-cam that's not an issue because I just copy-paste the transcript and TH-cam will automatically align it. But if you need the caption to stay in sync, when you make cuts don't delete, instead 'replace with gap clips' in Descript.
      Another workflow I use often is for videos that start out in Descript, for example Zoom recordings of interviews. I may edit everything in Descript but if I want to crop/reframe the video because of the wasted space, I will download the video, reframe it in Camtasia, export and re-upload in Descript, but keep the original audio and add this reframed video on a separate track. That lets me keep the edits but the video is different. That's because Descript doesn't have cropping right now.
      Many possibilities. I keep wanting to make a separate video for each one of these workflows. Camtasia works well with Descript and vice versa.

    I got the better solution then Audiate for removing the dead silence from audio and its works smoothly, but my concern is how you will sync the video part with audio after removing the audio dead silence. Suppose I have 20 minute long audio and after I removing silence length becomes 10 minutes but video length remains 20 minute because audiate removes only audio part not video. What is the video sync process for this removed dead silence????

    • @Graphicious
      @Graphicious  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you send the project from Camtasia to Audiate, and remove silences, then you transfer it back using the process shown in this video and choose to 'edit timeline' in Camtasia. It will also make the same cuts in the video, so the video will stay synchronised with your audio and all your cuts.
