As a UK TF fan, I got into trouble at school as a child when a teacher overheard me talking about the Dinobots with friends - I had repeatedly been saying "Slag". I eventually cleared by name when I bought in a toy catelogue to show the teacher which indicated that Slag's name is actually "Slag"!
Slash has gotten some new bio details: She's a stealth expert who is perfect at hiding and blending in, so no Decepticon can spot her. However, being a dum-dum dinobot, she also hides exceptionally well from the Autobots. And from everyone else. So, technically, Slash has been there all along, she was just hiding. The level of self-awareness and humor in that backstory just gave me a new favorite Dinobot.
My favorite Dinobot is Grimlock and my favorite incarnation of him is his Fall of Cybertron. I have that figure and refuse to replace it, even though the Power of the Primes combiner Dinobots look so cool.
Yup. I hate stupid Grimlock idea. He is way more interesting as hard ass leader of Cybertronian commando under Sentinel Prime, who was captured by Shockwave and miss whole power change on Cybertron. So when he find out that ex-Decepticon is his new Prime, he did have hard time to acknowledge that, alongside anger issue and speech impediment caused by Shockwave modifications.
My problem with the Marvel comics origin was that in the very first issue there is a standard roll call/introduction, where every Autobot announces his name, and Optimus Prime says something like "Good, we've all survived". Then a few issues later, we get the Dinobot origin, which says that the Ark reactivated five Autobots and sent them out. You'd think Optimus Prime would have noticed that his five most powerful warriors were missing...
To be fair, it's not actually stated how the Dinobots ended up on the Ark in the Marvel continuity, given that the group was made up of Autobots who felt that Prime was a poor leader, and were making plans for the inevitability that the Autobots would lose unless they gave Prime the boot and installed a better leader.
The Marvel continuity prequel series Transformers '84 Secrets and Lies had them deactivated by Shockwave before the Ark left Cybertron and their bodies were place on the Ark.
I love that they finally made the dinobots a combiner team. Growing up I never understood why they didn’t. It’s awesome to see it. Love to get ahold of a complete combiner version of the team!
Short answer is the toys imported from Takara didn't combine Same with the insecticons iirc they haven't been made combiners yet I don't count the Beast Wars one
I always assumed it would make them overpowered. Like the dinobots were already super powerful on their own without combining. They were able to take on the constructicons head on and almost obliterated them if not for Devastator.
I really love the Dinobots because they were extremely hardcore from g1 to TFA to Age of Extinction and to the IDW Comics. Their robot forms are cool but their beast modes that I love they are way cooler than their robot modes. And my favorite scene in Transformers G1 is Dinobot Island part 2 when the Dinobots calling the dinosaurs to aid them against the Decepticons that are harming the island's inhabitants.

Always had a weak spot for Slag because the Triceratops was my favorite dinosaur as a kid. Although Grimlock as a character is much more interesting. Also really like Scorn from AOE. Would love a G1 version of him!
... You're kidding right? That fight sucked. It was mainly them just running after Windbalde, until Volcanicus did a prat fall, and got his butt stuck in a crater, and lost by default... Because his butt was stuck in a crater... God what an embarrassment to the franchise the whole prime wars trilogy was.

The Dinobots are huge characters and they combine to be the same size as Predaking? The design is awful. Slag and Sludge should be the legs, as they are the biggest ones. Snarl and Swoop the arms. Snarl's spikes on the side. Swoop's missiles like the seekers have their blasters on the arm. Power of the Primes did the utmost disservice to the Dinobots. Four out of five Dinobots manhandled by Dark Rodimus Prime and Overlord was utterly infuriating. Sludge killed by one punch was an utter disgrace, while Snarl cowering showed the writers did not understand the Dinobots lore.
@@EricLinstone An exaggeration, but not one without merit. He voiced Dinobot (and by extension, he voiced his clone Dinobot II), Rattrap, Silverbolt, and Waspinator. So every scene of Dinobot and Rattrap's bickering is technically one man arguing with himself.

I always thought it'd be hilarious for a gundam transformers crossover. I just picture a transformer having a gundam vehicle mode, and only hearing the transformation because the outward appearance would be so similar.
I absolutely love the Aligned versions of the Dinobots. It's a damn shame they never appeared on Transformers Prime like they were supposed to during the Predacon story.

I want scorn as a gigantosaurus (he is as powerful as optimus but weaker than grimlock and his 2nd in command because the strongest must lead the dinobots and scorn is the 2nd strongest dinobot and he is as big as grimlock)
The problem with that PC idea, is the word is only offensive to a particular place on the planet, due to being a slang term. Hypothetically people could start saying a particular word like Grimlock to be considered offensive and Hasbro changes that name, just to be PC is utterly ridiculous. The word Slag should have never been changed, since the actual literal term is stony waste matter separated from metals during the smelting or refining of ore.
I always thought they missed a great chance in Transformers Armada. They should have recolored Transmetal Megatron and changed the robot head to make him Armada Grimlock.
When I watched the G1 show as a kid, I always wondered why the Dinobots never got a combiner mode like all the other teams, such as the Constructicons, the Arialbots, etc.
I think of dinobots, combiners, and titans as cool bots. And when the dinobots come to save the autobots, they would cause a lot pain to the decepticons. Not even Soundwave is superior to the dinobots might. And my favorite team is the aerialbots dinobots constructicons and predacons.
Dank Galvatron have you watched the g1 episode SOS dinobots? Cause the dinobots made earthquakes and soundwaves minicons were defeated. Even the cons were defeated to. So Soundwave inferior dinobots superior. Lol
I absolutely love the Dinobots, they are some of my favorite characters in all of Transformers I love what the videogame Fall of Cybertron and Dreamwave comics did with the origins of the Dinobots by both having them as a team called the Lighting Strike Collision Force, I just think that is super cool but I also like the Origin in the FOC videogame that they were made and experimented on by Shockwave, which makes me sad but adds a dark background and pain from their past that they have to overcome and I'm really interested in the comic that continues that!
The best set of Dinobots was G1, hands down. The gold, chrome, red and slate silver color schemes were tastefully done, their transformations, robot & dinosaur modes, and a.w.e.s.o.m.e detail like the see-through panels (highlighting the high tech/primitive contradiction) made these among the best among *all* G1 toys, and certainly among future versions... Hasbro really knocked it out of the park with these guys, and their continued popularity is a testament to that.
I think this episode and Grimlock's individual one should get an update. Since Transformers Cyberverse, more toys and media appearances have come around so there's more info to work with.
My comment ended up as a reply to someone else, but the Beast is an abomination as Diamond Bolt said in my Dinobot video. Grimlock and Slag (whom I refuse to call anything else dang it!) are ties for my favorites. Great video as always Chris.

At least it looks like they are keeping Sludge's actual name for Power of the Primes; I for one was insulted when the toy for his Age of Extinction movie version was renamed "Slog"... What is a "slog" anyway?
actually "Slog" is a funny little nod to Slag's original naming convention. A Slog is also a British slang word (much like Slag is, though in the case of the original meaning of the name, Slag is the unwanted parts of molten metal). If a British person refers to something as a Slog, it means 'it was tough to get through' or 'tough it out'. "That film was just a slog". "Just got to slog it out and keep going." Still I'm British and he'll always be Slag to me, sure it got some playground chuckles back then but it just fits more.
originally in the film of transformers:4 age of Extinction there were supposed to be seven members of the dinobots but some of them were deleted from the film due to the budget they have to delete two original members of the dinobots and one new of the dinobots those three members were slog and snarl and slash although we couldn’t see them in the film but they did appear in the toys
HawthornHawk Fanstoys (third party line) already has all five Dinobots in Masterpiece style to fill in that gap. Though they have two Slags (Scoria and PerfectFusion Cesium) so choose wisely.
The Fanstoys Dinobots are absolutely superb figures! The PerfectFusion line has a different look to, so that figure doesn't really fit with the other 4.
Oh, my most favourite non official combiner: *The Beast.* It has the good kind version of them in the game called Volcanicus, it just have swapped side version of their limbs and more humanoid torso.
My favorite of the Dinobots has always been Swoop. Probably because I loved flying dinos as a kid and as I grew up his character was more appealing than his gruffer teammates even if 90% of the time he ends up following their lead irregarless of his own opinions and not really standing out like Slag/Snarl did when he disagreed with Grimlock's decisions. Personally, I think it'd be interesting to see a dimetrodon or iguadon dinobot, but that's just me. They could do a mammoth or sabertooth tiger robot alt mode, label them a dinobot and I wouldn't complain.
There’s a great comic story about Swoop’s past. Back on Cybertron he was called Divebomb but got his name stolen by the Deception Divebomb, they had a fight and Optimus saved Swoop, who felt he held it over him. When Swoop found out Divebomb was on earth he just said, “He’s still using my name”.
A few months ago, I was saying to a friend that I was glad that Generations was moving into the G1 era where I had little nostalgic connection, so I'd have a decent excuse to cut back on robot purchasing. And then there's previews of the Predacons, Dinobots, Dreadwind and Darkwing... Just when I thought I was out, they drag me back in.
Extra points for giving me the 'feels' by including a shot of the fold-out poster from the Marvel UK comics, I totally remember having that stuck on my wall :)
Here is something... somewhat horrifying to think about. In the Aligned continuity, specifically Fall of Cybertron, you find out Shockwave discovered the forms he planned to use for the dinobots by observing earth. This paints the age range of transformers, shockwave especially, to be ludicrously long as JUST the difference between the timeframe that Stegosaurus existed and the timeframe that Tyrannosaurus Rex lived is around *90 million years.* Shockwave had been watching earth for an *insane* amount of time, painting him vastly older than 90 million years.
There are a lot of dinosaurs I want to see as official dinobots. Hell to be honest if they continually cranked out dinobots I would buy all of them virtually replacing my collection and split them into teams of dinobots and start to write a fan fiction universe centered around them.

I am gonna feature an expanded group of Dinobots based on G1, led by Grimlock of course, but including many new dinosaurs and other Mesozoic creatures in the mix.
The Dinobots were my fav TF team as a kid. I like their 80's cartoon origins better than the one from the comics. As a kid, I wished they were combiners. Dinobot from the Beast Wars series was my fav character of that show.
I would love the idea of Dinocons evil versions of the Dinobots being more menacing and scary prehistoric creatures like Spinosaurus, Helicoprion, Dilophosaurus or Majungasaurus. Let me know what you think because I will be making paper figures of these "Dinocons"
For about 5 months now I've had an idea of a second set of 5 dinobots. Scorn the Spinosaurus, Slash the Utahraptor(for size and accuracy reasons), Paddles the Plesiosaur, Scowl the Ankylosaurus and original character Slam the Pachycephalosaurs.
Id like to see an ultimate dinobot team, featuring grimstone (or brimstone I can't remember lol) his drones (they could almost act as pets for the team), the core five, scorn, slash, strafe (not the aoe version), scar (perhaps an oviraptor would work for a dino mode) and paddles all featured in some comic or released in a set, or at least some official artwork of them all with g1 colors
You are correct. His name is grimstone. Brimstone is from the cybertron robots in disguise 2006 TV series and is a pterasaur while grimstone is a styrachosaurus.
Update : For the Studio Series.. a Tie in 86 series for the 35th Anniversary of Transformers and the 30th Anniversary of the Movie. Hasbro did all 5 Dinobots in their original colors and names. For Legacy, Their G2 versions will be released ( not the same color )
Swoop is my favorite because he was closer to an Autobot but still Dinobot enough to be part of the team, at least according to his profile. Plus he was the only flyer on the team. I'm just waiting for a good reason why fans seems so obsessed with the Dinobots combining. Not every team needs to be a Combiner. Nobody asks for the Omnibots or Battlechargers to be Combiners.
ShadowWing Tronix I think the idea of the Dinobots being a combiner is the Constructicons are their arch enemies in G1. Devastator is always the one who fights the Dinobots, but the Dinobots keep on attacking Devastator one at a time, instead of all at once. The strike team of the Dinobots are huge and powerful on their individual forms, and imagine how much bigger and powerful they would be as one robot.
@@qwerty5684 That's not enough for me. I'm happy with the Dinobots just being a team of dinosaur robots. Both Topspin and Twin Twist are blue and white, but nobody demands they combine. I'm not as obsessed with Combiners having a unified color scheme but I want them to look like they combine. It's like how I want my transformers to look like they transform.
The Dinobots are the best! I preferred their more intelligent speaking style in the comics rather than their 'cave man' soundry of the cartoons. Giving them a combiner; first 'The Beast' (loved the way he tore through those Decepticon combiners), and then 'Volcanicus', was a masterstroke!

Nah! Bay's films were too smash-and-grab. He should have given more depth to characters - Dinobots included. Intelligent Dinobots = more engaging storylines / Dumb-sounding Dinobots = too much comic relief stories...
Don't worry about calling Sludge a brontosaurus, it is infact an actual dinosaur, it only looks like Apatosaurus, I don't actually have a favorite version of the dinobots, it's cuz they're all my favorites, except for "the beast", and I would like to see a dinobots that transforms into a Therizinosaurus, a herbivorous dinosaur with a long neck, small head, and massive 3 ft long claws (3 claws on both hands). I always imagined his name would be a sickle, or scythe.
My favourite part of their legacy is how, in warhammer fantasy, the lizardmen’s mounted heroes have related species named after the Dinobots. Mazdamundi’s stegadon named Zlaaq, Kroq-Gar’s carnosaur called Grymloq and Tiqtaq-To’s Terradon Zwup.

I just imagine they were listing the names of the dinobots and when they said slag the the British guy just looked up in shock
The problem with that PC idea, is the word is only offensive to a particular place on the planet, due to being a slang term.
Hypothetically people could start saying a particular word like Grimlock to be considered offensive and Hasbro changes that name, just to be PC is utterly ridiculous. The word Slag should have never been changed, since the actual literal term is stony waste matter separated from metals during the smelting or refining of ore.

I always thought they missed a great chance in Transformers Armada. They should have recolored Transmetal Megatron and changed the robot head to make him Armada Grimlock.
When I watched the G1 show as a kid, I always wondered why the Dinobots never got a combiner mode like all the other teams, such as the Constructicons, the Arialbots, etc.
Whatever future the Dinobots have, it's nice that they have endured the changing years. Great video as always Chris.

The Dinobot that I know and truly love in my childhood was the Beast Wars's Dinobot. He is a warrior, let the battle be joined.

I think of dinobots, combiners, and titans as cool bots. And when the dinobots come to save the autobots, they would cause a lot pain to the decepticons. Not even Soundwave is superior to the dinobots might. And my favorite team is the aerialbots dinobots constructicons and predacons.

I absolutely love the Dinobots, they are some of my favorite characters in all of Transformers I love what the videogame Fall of Cybertron and Dreamwave comics did with the origins of the Dinobots by both having them as a team called the Lighting Strike Collision Force, I just think that is super cool but I also like the Origin in the FOC videogame that they were made and experimented on by Shockwave, which makes me sad but adds a dark background and pain from their past that they have to overcome and I'm really interested in the comic that continues that!
The Dinobots' origin was much cooler in the Marvel comic than on the G1 cartoon.

The best set of Dinobots was G1, hands down. The gold, chrome, red and slate silver color schemes were tastefully done, their transformations, robot & dinosaur modes, and a.w.e.s.o.m.e detail like the see-through panels (highlighting the high tech/primitive contradiction) made these among the best among *all* G1 toys, and certainly among future versions... Hasbro really knocked it out of the park with these guys, and their continued popularity is a testament to that.

I think this episode and Grimlock's individual one should get an update. Since Transformers Cyberverse, more toys and media appearances have come around so there's more info to work with.

My comment ended up as a reply to someone else, but the Beast is an abomination as Diamond Bolt said in my Dinobot video. Grimlock and Slag (whom I refuse to call anything else dang it!) are ties for my favorites. Great video as always Chris.

At least it looks like they are keeping Sludge's actual name for Power of the Primes; I for one was insulted when the toy for his Age of Extinction movie version was renamed "Slog"... What is a "slog" anyway?

actually "Slog" is a funny little nod to Slag's original naming convention. A Slog is also a British slang word (much like Slag is, though in the case of the original meaning of the name, Slag is the unwanted parts of molten metal). If a British person refers to something as a Slog, it means 'it was tough to get through' or 'tough it out'.
"That film was just a slog".
"Just got to slog it out and keep going."
Still I'm British and he'll always be Slag to me, sure it got some playground chuckles back then but it just fits more.

originally in the film of transformers:4 age of Extinction there were supposed to be seven members of the dinobots but some of them were deleted from the film due to the budget they have to delete two original members of the dinobots and one new of the dinobots those three members were slog and snarl and slash although we couldn’t see them in the film but they did appear in the toys

HawthornHawk Fanstoys (third party line) already has all five Dinobots in Masterpiece style to fill in that gap.
Though they have two Slags (Scoria and PerfectFusion Cesium) so choose wisely.
The Fanstoys Dinobots are absolutely superb figures!
The PerfectFusion line has a different look to, so that figure doesn't really fit with the other 4.

Oh, my most favourite non official combiner: *The Beast.* It has the good kind version of them in the game called Volcanicus, it just have swapped side version of their limbs and more humanoid torso.

My favorite of the Dinobots has always been Swoop. Probably because I loved flying dinos as a kid and as I grew up his character was more appealing than his gruffer teammates even if 90% of the time he ends up following their lead irregarless of his own opinions and not really standing out like Slag/Snarl did when he disagreed with Grimlock's decisions.
Personally, I think it'd be interesting to see a dimetrodon or iguadon dinobot, but that's just me. They could do a mammoth or sabertooth tiger robot alt mode, label them a dinobot and I wouldn't complain.
There’s a great comic story about Swoop’s past. Back on Cybertron he was called Divebomb but got his name stolen by the Deception Divebomb, they had a fight and Optimus saved Swoop, who felt he held it over him. When Swoop found out Divebomb was on earth he just said, “He’s still using my name”.

Fun fact even bumblebee got a dinosaur mode he turned into a velociraptor although that mode was an exclusive of the rescue bots toyline
I also noticed that prime and the rescue bots dino modes were chosen to reference the g1 dinobots
Here is something... somewhat horrifying to think about. In the Aligned continuity, specifically Fall of Cybertron, you find out Shockwave discovered the forms he planned to use for the dinobots by observing earth. This paints the age range of transformers, shockwave especially, to be ludicrously long as JUST the difference between the timeframe that Stegosaurus existed and the timeframe that Tyrannosaurus Rex lived is around *90 million years.* Shockwave had been watching earth for an *insane* amount of time, painting him vastly older than 90 million years.
My favorite dinobot is Sir Stompsalot from Switch-N-Go Dinos.

There are a lot of dinosaurs I want to see as official dinobots.
Hell to be honest if they continually cranked out dinobots I would buy all of them virtually replacing my collection and split them into teams of dinobots and start to write a fan fiction universe centered around them.

@@dephtons Well neither has Primal, BW Megatron, Rhinox, and Waspinator. I don't count Cheetor because I think Cheetor is the most reoccurring Beast Wars character.

I am gonna feature an expanded group of Dinobots based on G1, led by Grimlock of course, but including many new dinosaurs and other Mesozoic creatures in the mix.

The Dinobots were my fav TF team as a kid. I like their 80's cartoon origins better than the one from the comics. As a kid, I wished they were combiners. Dinobot from the Beast Wars series was my fav character of that show.

For about 5 months now I've had an idea of a second set of 5 dinobots. Scorn the Spinosaurus, Slash the Utahraptor(for size and accuracy reasons), Paddles the Plesiosaur, Scowl the Ankylosaurus and original character Slam the Pachycephalosaurs.
Paddles would be the leader because Dinobot leaders don't start with S

Just bought the new version of T-Wrecks. Never thought I'd see this. I like how he and Magmatron have a co-leadship in the Beast Machines Dinobots.
Id like to see an ultimate dinobot team, featuring grimstone (or brimstone I can't remember lol) his drones (they could almost act as pets for the team), the core five, scorn, slash, strafe (not the aoe version), scar (perhaps an oviraptor would work for a dino mode) and paddles all featured in some comic or released in a set, or at least some official artwork of them all with g1 colors
You are correct. His name is grimstone. Brimstone is from the cybertron robots in disguise 2006 TV series and is a pterasaur while grimstone is a styrachosaurus.

Update : For the Studio Series.. a Tie in 86 series for the 35th Anniversary of Transformers and the 30th Anniversary of the Movie. Hasbro did all 5 Dinobots in their original colors and names. For Legacy, Their G2 versions will be released ( not the same color )
they havnt actually released studio series 86 swoop or snarl yet.
Swoop is my favorite because he was closer to an Autobot but still Dinobot enough to be part of the team, at least according to his profile. Plus he was the only flyer on the team. I'm just waiting for a good reason why fans seems so obsessed with the Dinobots combining. Not every team needs to be a Combiner. Nobody asks for the Omnibots or Battlechargers to be Combiners.
I dunno, I could kinda get with the idea of an Energon-style pants-and-shirt Battlecharger combiner! Let's call himmm... Muckabout! XD
ShadowWing Tronix I think the idea of the Dinobots being a combiner is the Constructicons are their arch enemies in G1. Devastator is always the one who fights the Dinobots, but the Dinobots keep on attacking Devastator one at a time, instead of all at once. The strike team of the Dinobots are huge and powerful on their individual forms, and imagine how much bigger and powerful they would be as one robot.
Their new Combiner Volcanicus that they introduced in Earth Wars is pretty cool

@@qwerty5684 That's not enough for me. I'm happy with the Dinobots just being a team of dinosaur robots. Both Topspin and Twin Twist are blue and white, but nobody demands they combine. I'm not as obsessed with Combiners having a unified color scheme but I want them to look like they combine. It's like how I want my transformers to look like they transform.
The BASICS on *GRIMLOCK* would be cool especially I missed how he got seperated from the other Dinobots in the IDW comics.

The Dinobots are the best! I preferred their more intelligent speaking style in the comics rather than their 'cave man' soundry of the cartoons. Giving them a combiner; first 'The Beast' (loved the way he tore through those Decepticon combiners), and then 'Volcanicus', was a masterstroke!
Wanna know what the smartest decision vase that bay made? Silencing the dinobots. I rather hear groans and growls that the caveman banter. But the intelligent dinobots are a no-no!(like cyberve grimlock!)
Nah! Bay's films were too smash-and-grab. He should have given more depth to characters - Dinobots included. Intelligent Dinobots = more engaging storylines / Dumb-sounding Dinobots = too much comic relief stories...

Don't worry about calling Sludge a brontosaurus, it is infact an actual dinosaur, it only looks like Apatosaurus, I don't actually have a favorite version of the dinobots, it's cuz they're all my favorites, except for "the beast", and I would like to see a dinobots that transforms into a Therizinosaurus, a herbivorous dinosaur with a long neck, small head, and massive 3 ft long claws (3 claws on both hands). I always imagined his name would be a sickle, or scythe.

My favourite part of their legacy is how, in warhammer fantasy, the lizardmen’s mounted heroes have related species named after the Dinobots.
Mazdamundi’s stegadon named Zlaaq, Kroq-Gar’s carnosaur called Grymloq and Tiqtaq-To’s Terradon Zwup.
