As a kid, when Shockwave and Jetfire were introduced together I assumed they were rivals. I always wanted to see a scientist rivalry. I guess it would be something resembling Reed Richards vs Dr. Doom.
I’ll add to that: Shockwave was part of Jetfire and Starscream’s friend group, but they all grew apart due to Starscream’s treachery, Jetfire joining the Autobots, and Shockwave himself becoming more and more mechanical and emotionless.

Shockwave and Prowl were played up as logic rivals in one continuity though that’s about as far Shockwave rivalries that I’m aware of went.

Comic Shockwave is awesome. I wish we see an adaptation of comic book Shockwave in TV or film instead of the boring "loyal" decepticon version of the character..Megatron already has Soundwave as his loyal minion.

I think a cool new fresh take on Shockwave would be where he tries to see all parts of the war, driven by logic he tries to determine who is right and who is wrong, but in the end finds there is no one answer.
Honestly I think that would be a really interesting story
Another take I think would be interesting would be a flip of the Animated depiction. Have him act as a Decepticon but, in a big reveal, he was an Autobot all along.

IDW did this he became One of the Primes from time travel and played all sides:) He was a senator once and optimus is close friend.
A sort of doctor strange, where he took the time to consider every possible outcome of the war and realized he needed to take action!
A big part of Shockwave's popularity was due to how unbelievably god-damn cool he looked. That alone helped him endure despite diminishing roles in mainstream media, and I'm thankful for that, because he tends to be one of the best characters in whatever series he is in and still looks god-damn cool to this day.
And what he did in the comics was legendary
Probably also helps that he looks like a Dalek on steroids.
Bayverse Shockwave looks fucking cool as well. Pity he only served as cannonfodder for Bay Prime.
I liked the cold and logical Shockwave of GQ but his Prime incarnation had so much more character and played such a huge role that I grew to prefer that version
i would consider prime shockwave as cold and logical, only showing brief signs of any anger or emotion if you can call it that.
I also prefer Prime’s version of shockwave. I like everything about that version. From his physical appearance and his vehicle mode, to his relationship with the other Decepticons.
Tf prime has been known to destroy personalities of beloved characters. I.E wheel Jack

Shockwave and Soundwave have always been my favorite main Decepticons. They share that cold calculating demeanor which makes them the only two rational and intelligent characters in all the series. They seem to take turns swaping functions as well since TFA&TFP as spy, scientist, guardian…

I think the "most loyal lieutenant" Soundwave pairs especially nicely with "emotionless, loyal only to logic" Shockwave.

I loved how James Roberts gave us a sneaky origin story to Shockwave, by disguising it as an Orion Pax story, revolving around a heist.

I find this updated version of the basics on Shockwave to be highly logical.
The Prime series was my first run-in with Shockwave (yes I live under a rock) and it remains my favourite incarnation.
It balances the mostly emotionless but extremely dangerous and amoral scientific genius traits together in a way that gives Shockwave a gravitas in the series when he’s an active presence.
And there’s a subtlety to his emotive action, in the little movements of his head and what i’m going to all antennae for lack of a better word.
And when his logical mask slips just a tiny bit in serious situations he seems really unhinged. Almost like the switch from detached scientist to brutal psycho is just a hair’s breadth away.
Fun fact: Did you know Corey Burton actually voiced Zark in the video game Kingdom Hearts 2 for the Tron world. Pretty cool since his voice for Shockwave was based of him and came full circle.

@@joshoshea3194 They mean Sark, one of the villains in the movie Tron, which has a level in Kingdom Hearts 2. Sark was who Corey Burton based his Shockwave voice on (the video says it was the Master Control Program, but that's incorrect), so it's cool to see it come full circle like that.
Corey Burton also played animated Megatron's voice, so cool.

It's interesting how the concept of being both a backstabbing, power hungry megalomaniac AND a deeply loyal ally fits absolutely perfectly with the concept of being a Decepticon.
I loved TF Prime's version. He fit so well with how that series was set up. The only thing that was off about him was his voice. Cory Burton could have elevated that version of the character even higher.
I respectfully disagree.
The voice perfectly suited his ‘logical’ disposition.
That his lack of emotive emphasis in his speech showed the mechanical indifference of logic that runs behind that red eye.
And it means so much more on the occasion that he lets it slip just that little bit.
Like when he threatened to gouge out Starscream’s eye or witnessing Unicron reanimate a colossal graveyard of predacon fossils.
@@rustkarl As great of an actor Corey Butron is, I can't recall ever feeling terrified by any of his versions of Shockwave. David Sobolov's shockwave is unironically extremely intimidating, which combined with his design makes him my favorite incarnation of Shockwave.
Shockwave is my favourite Decepticon and it was the original episode that locked me in for The Basics, so have a fiver for 5 years (Has to be more useful than crappy jokes I make on Twitter).

i love that both Animated and IDW each had a plot twist that revealed that another character was secretly Shockwave the entire time (with IDW even doing it twice), and every time it was done it managed to catch the entire fandom off-guard
Mostly because the second time IDW did it, it came completely out of left field and made no sense

1:45 I had that Marvel Comic as a Kid and it had a big impact on me. Seeing Shockwaves Backstory, fighting the Dinobots and in the End standing tall and towering above the beaten Transformers maked Shockwave to an instant favourite of mine.
And I was outraged as he got killed by Death´s Head. On the other Side, that made me a Fan of Death´s Head too. 😅
James Roberts, writer of More than Meets the Eye and Lost Light, also was horrified as a kid when Shockwave was killed by Death's Head.
I love the Aligned version of Shockwave, especially his role as a scientist. In fact, Rise of the Dark Spark has him drop a line "I do not believe, Starscream, I hypothesize."
I like how the brief scene of Bruticus wielding Shockwave in his weapon mode led to his Combiner Wars toy being scaled perfectly for a combiner to wield.
I think the prime version is my favourite, keeping the calm logistical personality but giving him a bulky, intimidating body. And the voice makes me swoon.
It's sad how his design for Dark of The Moon was one of the most badass and G1-accurate yet he did absolutely nothing through the whole movie.

I kinda wished that more stories would feature the double agent-esque elements that animated Shockwave had. War isn't just about a series of combat, it's also about the espionage of vital information as well. Shockwave being a undercover spy was seriously a twist I didn't even expect and it makes me wish that more espionage elements were more prominent in times of the cybertronian war.
Just remembered, when I was creative and made my own stories, I had an alternate timeline SHockwave who had gotten the Unicron treatment, called him Omegawave, he had gold ans silver livery, a weird round head and was as powerful as Galvatron of course. Also had a mini cape. :D

Honestly, I´m still asking what was IDW thinking when they resurrected Shockwave as Onix Prime?, that was the moment IDW jumped the shark, it ruined everything Shockwave did in the end of Dark Cybertron
IDW is one to jump the shark and mess up all of their comics. Same with the TMNT comics everything past issue 100 is hot garbage.
I don't like the idea of Empurata. Why can't Shockwave just look different?
They're robots, they don't need to all look humanoid.
I like the idea of it but in shockwave's wasn't handled the best way. And to be fair dept perseption is a good thing to have also also if that optic out you are basically blind so yeah only one eye is kinda a bad deal.
Yeah it feels strange to me. I know the reason for is to be some form of ostracization to show how terrible society is, but in a society full of robots, one eye and claws shouldn't feel different. I feel like it would be a better concept if it was like shadowstriker's Frankenstein body with different parts that don't fit to the point where a bot can't transform

I like the so logical he's only with the cons out of expediency, but love the mad scientist angle. Late G1 is filled with concept toys they only made a few of then never again and someone tinkering in a lab for war efforts or just because fills that sublimely.

I like the Dreamwave version. He's maniacal without being nightmare creepy, is pretty much a third faction but manages to turn Autobot and Decepticon alike to his scheme, and yet there is a sense of logic to that plan. He's like the best parts of other versions. Prime Shockwave I could never figure out where he stood and for all I know Starscream was right to want him gone.
as a fan of the unicron triolgy and the marvel comics,i always loved the idea of shockwave being a power-hungry decepticon like armada thrust and cybertron starscream,and his marvel comics cover with the "all are dead" quote is amazing
Even in G1 I've always thought Shockwave was loyal for his own benefit like: "As loyal I can do whatever I want, like evil experiments, create my own army etc..." Infact in Transformers Tataki(the G1 Japan exclusive game for PS2) at the end he get hungry with power and begin to alterate space and time, and both the Aurobots and Decepticons must stop him.
I liked cybertron starscream because he was not only smart enough to plot in secret but was also a very capable fighter

I remember my parents getting me the grey Galactic Man toy as a holiday present from Blackpool, back in 84 when I was nine and then months later, seeing Shockwave in all of his purple Decepticon glory for the first time in the UK comic. Confusing times for a wee lad back in the 80s.
I believe the entire reason Shockwave couldn't be sold in the UK back in the day was because of the Galactic Man toy. Which is unfortunate, given how heavily he was featured in the UK comic.

In my school vr game shockwave was the decepticon that overlooks the creation of the decepticon calamity weapon Goalius and was a boss where you play as shattered glass torch talon or barbatos lupas rex during the fight shockwave had summoned in a harsh Mal from gundam iron blooded orphans the tenkai dragon from tenkai knights and goalius and ultimately he died in goalius arms after his chest was smashed by the barbatos lupas rex and during the fight goalius wiled him to damage the barbatos lupas rex and in the Imagen order campaign game over by goalius he showed up holding shockwave and pointed it at the player

This is so mostly because he acting out of emotions mostly anger/rage and wanted to do something that would make him feel some form of joy from hurting Starscream.
I definitely like Shockwave's most modern interpretation, although I do kind of wish more of the Decepticon agent elements from his Animated appearance were included. It could even be interesting to see more of a double agent persona from him, perhaps making him appear loyal to both Optimus Prime and Megatron to bolster his calculated personality while making it clear that he only cares about Cybertron.
Master Archivist Chris McFeely takes his job seriously. It is a 'logical decision'.
I bought Astro Magnum new in 1987, but when I got home and opened the box, the gun barrel was missing, needless to say I was more than a little annoyed
At TFCon LA 2023, David Sobolov (TFP Shockwave's voice actor) said he was given character notes saying Shockwave was cool and logical and no one got under his skin . . . except Starscream. The one guy who could annoy Shockwave, lol.
Prime , G1 and animated were the peak Shockwaves in my humble opinion. IDW was good in the first twist. Second twist aka the ass-pull destroyed him for me. Also I love the fact that while all Shockwaves were more or less same cold calculated bots with some scientific backround Animated one was basically a twitchy panicky walking meme.
I suspect that the modern interpretation of Shockwave has been influenced by Tarantulas (and maybe Rampage) of _Beast Wars_.

Hello and good Saturday morning Chris from downtown Hamilton Ontario Canada, I'm not sure if I mentioned this before in the first video of shockwave I remember Christmas of '84 I got the radio shack version of the toy back then but really wanted the official Hasbro version. But it was ok got it from my dad's eldest sister my aunt Angela and unfortunately what I really wanted was Megatron from my parents but never got him LoL because I'm assuming that looked more like a real hand gun than shockwave did, Great video as always hopefully you'll have something new next week thanks again sincerely Peter

the way he was killed in Legacy Of Unicron was downright chilling. He was executed so efficiently and mercilessly by Death's Head, the only character in the comic colder than Shockwave himself.

Chris, seeing you revisit Shockwave makes me think I'd really love to see you do a 'the basics' episode on all the characters (or the most high profile ones at any rate) that you couldn't get in toy form in the UK and the reasons why. Guys like Shockwave, the Constructicons, Swoop, Blaster, Perceptor, Omega Supreme, the Deluxe Insecticons, Gnaw and Fort Max. As a kid I was lucky enough to be able to pick up all 6 Constructicons after several European holidays and I found a Galactic Man toy in a local Tandy I painted purple and pretended was Shockwave, but I never knew why so many of these characters weren't available over here.
I believe Shockwave and Omega Supreme's toys weren't released because their toy molds were already licensed by other companies prior. Shockwave by Radioshack, and Omega by Granstand Convertors.
Swoop wasn't released due to fragility issues with that toy meaning it didn't pass UK safety standards.
Have no clue why the others weren't though. According to the comic's editorial page, it was due to lack of retailer interest (which sounded like a weak excuse to me). I recall reading scans of the UK comic where fustrated kids would often write in to Grimlock's letters asking why those toys weren't available.

I was more-or-less aware of the Omega Supreme and Shockwave licensing issues from Tandy and Grandstand and heard mention of the Swoop fragility issue from bits and pieces I'd seen in various forums over the years. The lack of Constructicons over here always mystifies me though, especially as they we're the first combiner, so had that unique selling point, plus what self respecting kid doesn't love diggers and dumper trucks? Makes it even weirder when they eventually did make it to these shores in their yellow non-combining form for G2. I think (possibly) Fort Max might've prompted safety concerns too, just based purely on his size and whether if he toppled over on a small kid he might injure them.

I actually own a Radio Shack electronic exclusive called Galactic Man. I got it when I was a kid from a thrift store. Though it was missing all it's robot components the electronics did work (even if they don't now).
Shockwave is honestly one of the most badass, cunning and powerful Decepticons out there, a childhood favourite of mine when I watched the OG transformers 1984 series, transformers prime and transformers animated. Wish we could see more of him in the cold, calculating, scientist role.
As a kid watching Transformers animated, I couldn’t believe it when Longarm was revealed to be Shockwave. It was such an interesting and different take for both characters. Not to mention, it was a completely new and terrifying idea of what could happen in the Transformers war; that being spies and espionage. TFA Longarm/Shockwave put a new spin on the phrase “more than meets the eye.”
Quick question: Have you mastered the art of drug like videos? Cause after this, I watched your videos on transformation and multichangers. How do you do that, like seriously. It is both fascinating, yet a bit weird. Nice video though. Love it.

Overall my favorite portrayal is the loyal guardian of Cybertron, but Shockwave is one of the few characters where despite my overall preference the stand out moments in my mind come from other sources. I particularly like how multiple times in comics he has faced all 5 Dinobots, who normally seem near invincible, by himself and essentially won.
I also liked in Transformers Prime when he was confronting Starscream about various things and seemed about to kill him he would consider Starscream's excuse and even called it logical at least once and let Starscream go.

Yep, that's anti-firearm logic all right...lol. That being said, I do think Shockwave's tank form and Megatron's jet/tank form make a lot more sense in universe than transforming into hand-held weapons, but I do not agree AT ALL with WHY it was done.

Marvel Shockwave is the GOAT, but IDW Shockwave seems amazing too.

I think in terms of character design, his 2007 adaptation of the movie's video game was by far the best. It stays true to the original design while giving him a more intimidating visage along with extra firepower and mobility. Plus triple shifters are just cool. Especially when one form is a Apache and the other is a cannon.
Personally I think John Barber single-handedly ruined Shockwave. Every single cross over he was the big bad arch villain, they’d kill him and in the next crossover he’s back followed by rinse and repeat. Lazy writer, with lazy writing and yes I know this will draw hate but sometimes the truth hurts.
I can only imagine the face Tsar Nicolas II must have made when he learned that there was a giant frozen robot in the Russian Tundra
Onyx secretly being shockwave was one of the best plot twists I’ve seen in a comic book.
Heh, that shockwave that was just his gun turned upside down mimicked what I did with transformers that didn't have a vehicle mode. I would transform them partially and try different twists to make a vehicle or ship.
I remember there was a meme of Dreamwave Shockwave being behind everything. It funny in the later years of IDW that a good chunk of everything ended up being the cause of Shockwave
My favorite part about the character is that Hasbro was not the only western company to import the original Astro Magnum toy, with that same mold being sold by Radio Shack in a grey color scheme called "Galactic Man" on the package but nicknamed "Shackwave" by the TF fandom. It was the Shackwave version of the toy that ended up being set dressing for the colony lab in the film Aliens.
Ah Shockwave, he's somehow gone on over the years to become my favourite character in the franchise, perhaps in spite of or maybe even due to his wildly different interpretations that ultimately coalessed into one of the most consistent, interesting and terrifying characters in the franchise, of whom the definitive voice for me will always be Corey Burton's portrayal.

Not Dweller In The Depths (a great episode) but Five Faces Of Darkness. Agreed, Blitzwing never seemed that perceptive, and it would have been great for that role to have been Shockwave's swansong in the original series.
Hey, after that maybe he slunk off into the bowels of Cybertron, had a hand in various secret and ancient things, and would almost certainly have known about the Trans-Organics from Dweller In The Depths. :)

G1 Shockwave left a big impression on me as a kid, and Burton's voice for him is my sort of "default" when I read any of the comics.
