I always liked the idea that the (G1) Dinobots were originally Decepticons, mistakenly resurrected by the Ark as Autobots. It explains their unusual personality traits.
I got lucky. I was a wee child during the g2 era, we got a g1 grimlock at toys r us in 93/94 by checking the back of the shelf. Didn’t realize how lucky I was as a child to get a new in box g1 grimlock from the store
One interesting note on the 2015 RID Grim you overlooked - partway through they set him up with a faux vehicle disguise to allow him to move around unseen, as a green construction shovel, which I'm thinking is a direct homage to the 2001 RID Grim! So that one wasn't completely forgotten, after all.
"Me Grimlock kick BUTT!......Me Grimlock need new strategy..." I thought Bumblebee said Grimlock was imprisoned on the Alchemor for "property damage due to Grimlock being... Grimlock" referencing that version's occasional destructive clumsiness.
He did seem to imply that was the case. Bee said Grim was imprisonsed on the Alchemor for “Grimlock being Grimlock”. And knowing RID 2015 Grimlock, the dude loves smashing stuff and punching Decepticons.
While I know it wasn't intentional but, you have no idea how much joy you brought me. You have posted a video about my single favorite Cybertronian on my Birthday. Thank You!
The voice actor of Grimlock from G1 is my favorite one and I like when Grimlock say Me Grimlock he is awesome thank you for the video this is the best video ever.
I love these episodes. overviews of specific characters are great. I've been writing fanfiction for fifteen years, and stuff like this really helps with the transformers stuff I'm working on. In making my own continuity in which to set my story, I have a lot of different interpretations of characters to draw on to populate it. episodes like this help me look at all the traits of the different versions of the characters and see which bits are the most core to the character. I mean, grimlock was never an issue for that, I've got my grimlock pretty well formed in my head. but there are so many other characters that this series has really helped me with.
I too would like to make my own transformers series but I am going to make a stop motion TH-cam series. I have this idea of including every single version of the characters into 1 single story, the idea being that the cartoon universes are all different planets in the same universe, minicons are just a natural extension of transformers that help bring out their partner bots fulls potential and cyber planet keys further boost a bots capabilites by enhancing them with a unique power granted to them by whichever prime they are specifically descended from since I did take the idea of a few primes being reincarnated via the Wellspring of Allsparks through their descendants from IDW. One of the ideas I also have is that the various Optimus' are all just different commanders on different planets or the same planet just a different quadrant, but Optimus Prime is the actual commander of all autobot forces since he has the Matrix of Leadership. I imagine one of the things that makes Optimus so hard to defeat in my iteration is that his ability literally allows him to create Holo-Replicas of past Actual-Primes to aid him in combat with their unique weapons fighting styles and abilities.
I think Fall of Cybertron’s interpretation of Grimlock feels like the definitive modern take on Grimlock. It feels like the best of both worlds where he has his aggressive and rebellious personality from the Marvel comics, while having the original voice and one percent of his humor from the G1 cartoon.
I've said it once... and I'll say it until the day I die. But Grimlock is my favorite character in not just the Transformers franchise, but in all of fiction. As a four year old child, I mainly liked him because of his alternate mode. But as I grew older, I understood more of his character. A truly conflicted character who believed in not just strength, but knowing when to use it. His belief that strength wasn't a power to be abused, and those that did are weak, is truly inspiring. Grimlock is ALWAYS going to be my favorite character... long live the king!
Fall of Cybertron Grimlock is my favorite version of my favorite Transformer. Great episode as always! Now I'm looking forward to a Wheeljack episode someday.
Given MP Shadow Panther exists, not too long I would imagine. Probably minus the electronics to make him cheaper too. That's before you get to the two Beast Wars Neo retools of the original Dinobot toy, that could also join the MP line.

@@HouseholdWheel Yes, but from what I have read both teams are powerful and enjoy fighting. I noticed the Dinobots are portrayed as strong practically indestructible, but dim witted characters. (Sport Jocks type) The Monsterbots are similar, though they are not dim witted. More like judgement impaired team, because they like to rough house. Similar to people who pick a fight at a pub for the sake of having a rowdy good time and they are drunk. (Competitive Rough Housers) I guess they are closer alike with such a minor difference, that it is barely noticeable. You are correct, they are basically the same. I would like to have seen them together in the G1 cartoon, to see the type of chemistry the writers come up with, but it never happened.
I thought Grimlock was messed up by Overlord during his incarceration on Garus-9 ,but escaped before the Wreckers showed up I. THE LAST STAND OF THE WRECKERS ?
So don't kill me Transformers fans but one of my favorite versions of the Dinobots is the the G1 repaints of the Last Knight dinobots. Wife got them for me for Christmas the year the came out. Great toys. Two headed Swoop is odd but they are still fun.
Some revealed in comics it that the other 2 dinobots of animated can talk but Grimlock don't let then. When one of then try he atack him and claim something like "Grimlock is one who speaks"
I love Grimlock as depicted in The Transformers The Movie and season 3, still a bad-a$$ force to be reckoned with, but of all the characters that are supposed to be humorous (Wheelie, Blur) only he and the other Dinobots (and the Junkions to a lesser extent) actually continue to put a smile on my face
As someone who grew up with the UK Transformers comic, my favourite Dinobot was always Swoop... I love how the rivalry with the Predacon Divebomb (which grew into a rivalry between the Dinobots and Predacons as teams) all started with a misprint in one of the very early American strips (where Swoop apparently had a different name - Divebomb - in one panel of a Cybertron flashback, while all the other Dinobots had the same names), which raised a question in the UK letters page from some eagle-eyed kid about how his Predacon counterpart ended up with the name, which got a hastily-improvised answer from Mr Furman about some contest to win the name (in which the Predacon had cheated), which led to a story in the black-and-white strip showing this continuing grudge being carried by Swoop over 4 million years until the present day. From an awkward readers' question to an amazing grudge match years later which levelled an entire town as the two Divebombs - former and current - had a spectacular air battle to settle things once and for all, with both being shot down and ploughing through buildings as they crashed... this is why I loved Simon Furman's writing, because he not only used the original two-sentence character notes he was given but added to the mythos and expanded on the basic character traits until you had Transformers that actually felt *sentient* rather than just robots programmed with certain quirks.
I remember reading the UK comics growing up. Grimlock wasn’t stupid in these. Far from it. He struggled with expressing himself and this caused him huge frustration. He was also probably the toughest, most pugnacious bot out there, quite capable of going toe to toe with anyone. I adored him. I hated the Dino mode, I adored the character. He had depth.
I think it's worth mentioning that RID Grimlock (the first one) was also not designed to be Grimlock. His name in Car Robots is Build Hurricane, which is a pretty heavy implication that he was never intended to be anything but a spare combiner limb. Probably one of those "keep the trademark" situations. They're both green and black, too. Wonder if that's a coincidence.
This is great! I just watched it with my son, who loves Grimlock. He has the G1 version I used to play with, that his Nana kept in storage for 30 years! lol
This is one of your best, ever, pieces of work in your always excellent Basics series. I'm repeatedly impressed by the standard you set in content development and presentation. I came to this episode very late, obviously but... I'm super happy to be here. Like most, I adore Grimlock... my personal favorite iteration, though, is one of his few non-dino modes. His very limited Titanium figure from the Fall of Cybertron series is just superb. The Titanium figurines were always grossly underrated with both his, and Prowl's figures especially contributing to that proof. Thanks for all you do, Chris. You're appreciated out here, especially during the COVID crisis. You add joy, mate, and I for one am grateful.
two small points; Worth noting that pre 2000's Grimlock's Dino mode was depicted as a godzilla-like "tail dragging" posture (it wasn't recognized this was an incorrect understanding of a tyrannosaurus biology until around the 1st jurassic Park's time. and b.) during the third season of the original G1 series during his "comic relief' phase, Grimlock only turned into Robot mode (I think) twice
G1, Aligned, Movie & Animated are my personal fav versions & stories of the character, along w/ his unique speech patterns (whether a caveman or intellectual)(Gregg Berger (G1 & FOC), David Kaye (Animated) give off the caveman vibe for his voice, but showing signs of intelligence)
Grimlock is the only Transformers character who has appeared in all generations of the franchise. By that, I mean he was in every comic and cartoon. That is how popular he is
I think the reason Grimlock stayed so relevant for so long is continues to do so is just the simple appeal of his character. Strip away all the lore and history, and a lot of the Transformers lose what makes them interesting. But Grimlock doesn't need all that mythos to be a BADASS ROBOT T-REX THAT BREATHES FIRES AND CAN BECOME A BIG BUFF ROBOT GUY WHAT PUNCHES REALLY HARD
Mr. McFeely; I want to say that the work you put into your videos is very much appreciated, and the presentation and attention to detail are both excellent quality. I have been enjoying your content for months, and have been pleased when new videos appear in my feed. However, it disappoints me to no end that you failed to amend a significant error in your video. One that needs to be addressed immediately. It's pronounced *SCAVENGERS!*
Somehow Grimlock's one of the few characters in the early 2000's to have mostly avoided to haphazard random reuse of his name (aside from RiD). I guess his alt mode's just that strongly connected to him and him alone.
It is something mentioned, albeit super rarely, that there are multiple cybertronians who share names be it coincidence or they were named after the more iconic character much like it was once common to name your kid after president and war heroes. Of course the toylines are probably why we rarely see it since Hasbro doesn’t want things getting too muddled with confusion by having characters in the same continuity share names.

I met Grimlock back in TFcon this year. I even showed him my Grimlock impression and he said he liked it!
“Me Grimlock not kisser! Me Grimlock king!” Personally one of my favorite quotes. 😁
RID 2001 Grimlock should have been called Scavenger if you ask me...
I think it would be better if it was Grimstone or something
FOC Grimlock: I'm Grimlock
RID 2015 Grimlock: So am I
FOC Grimlock: REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
My favorite is fall of cybertron but I loved AOE design. If they put fall off cybertron voice and actions with aoe design... PERFECT GRIMLOCK
"Me Grimlock kick BUTT!......Me Grimlock need new strategy..."
I thought Bumblebee said Grimlock was imprisoned on the Alchemor for "property damage due to Grimlock being...
@@YurtletheTurtle377 honestly I liked 2015 Grimlock, I found him pretty funny (I may be in the minority there but hey, I usually am)
@@DMDarren I liked RID grimlock, but... the show overall paled...
While I know it wasn't intentional but, you have no idea how much joy you brought me. You have posted a video about my single favorite Cybertronian on my Birthday. Thank You!
Congrats
The voice actor of Grimlock from G1 is my favorite one and I like when Grimlock say Me Grimlock he is awesome thank you for the video this is the best video ever.
I like the G1 and the RID 2015 and Transformers Cyberverse one too I like it when he say Me Grimlock.
Me Grimlock.
Hes here in the comments up higher
My favorite version of grimlock is the comic version where all he says is,”me grimlock, me badass”
I think the only thing you missed was his relationship with Rodimus Prime, whom he apparently respected more then Optimus.
"ME GRIMLOCK NO BOZO ME GRIMLOCK KING" I love that catchphrase
Fall of Cybertron Grimlock is my favorite version of my favorite Transformer. Great episode as always! Now I'm looking forward to a Wheeljack episode someday.
Fun fact grimlock once thought of making a marshmallow autobot unfortunately it didn't work but it was delicious
Lightning Strike Coalition.
Sound familiar?
No
No
No
It was their team name in the Fall of Cybertron game...
So how long until Takara redecoes MP Dinobot into BW Grimlock?
Given MP Shadow Panther exists, not too long I would imagine. Probably minus the electronics to make him cheaper too.
That's before you get to the two Beast Wars Neo retools of the original Dinobot toy, that could also join the MP line.
And remold the head also.
I want to see a pure Masterpiece Grimlock
Do the basics on hot rod
Yes please
I preach to this as well!
Seconded
Wow.....iam your sub and I dont even know how =P
Dont mention that name.
"ME Grimlock am most popular around! Me Grimlock got to shrink into dalmatian, build giant nerd, and even wear skinny friend as pants! Me Grimlock LIVING THE *DREAM*!!"
I like robots in disguise with grimlock to show how appreciative can be delivered because when you look at him you might think he's a monster but when getting to know him he has a sweet heart.❤😊
Since you did a Basics Video on the Combaticons and the Wreckers, Could you do one on the *Constructicons* and the *Stunticons* ?
Thank you for including an image of the binaltech version, I love having my favorite transformers as one of my childhood favorite cars
I'm going to lose my job over Chris's videos.
Audie Bavington Well if you absolutely have to lose your job I think watching Chris’s videos are the way to go.
Dude....me too 😂😂.
I have to say Aligned Grimlock was such a different “beast” that I didn’t even realize it was Gregg Berger voicing him again.
For some reason the Monsterbots remind me of the Dinobots.
Well they're basically the same thing but fictional creatures instead of dinosaurs.
@@HouseholdWheel Yes, but from what I have read both teams are powerful and enjoy fighting. I noticed the Dinobots are portrayed as strong practically indestructible, but dim witted characters. (Sport Jocks type)
The Monsterbots are similar, though they are not dim witted. More like judgement impaired team, because they like to rough house. Similar to people who pick a fight at a pub for the sake of having a rowdy good time and they are drunk. (Competitive Rough Housers)
I guess they are closer alike with such a minor difference, that it is barely noticeable. You are correct, they are basically the same. I would like to have seen them together in the G1 cartoon, to see the type of chemistry the writers come up with, but it never happened.
@@alanguages Dinobots = SAS, Monsterbots =SBS
I thought Grimlock was messed up by Overlord during his incarceration on Garus-9 ,but escaped before the Wreckers showed up I. THE LAST STAND OF THE WRECKERS ?
I loved the way Dreamwave comics didn't present Grimlock and the Dinobots in a comedic way, but rather as greatly feared warriors 👍🏿
So don't kill me Transformers fans but one of my favorite versions of the Dinobots is the the G1 repaints of the Last Knight dinobots. Wife got them for me for Christmas the year the came out. Great toys. Two headed Swoop is odd but they are still fun.
They are age of extinction dinobots not the last knight
Some revealed in comics it that the other 2 dinobots of animated can talk but Grimlock don't let then. When one of then try he atack him and claim something like "Grimlock is one who speaks"
I am glad that The Dinobots made it into the movies, I just wish that they had a proper story for them
Grimlock is always my favorite autobot in transformers which says alot since the rest of my favorite transformers are on the decepticons XD
My favorite versions of Big Grim, are from G1, and the newer RID series.
Grimlock and Optimus fighting over Elita 1 is the best thing ever omg
I was a big fan of Grimlock's role in the War Within stories, with how he pushed Optimus to become a stronger leader not blinded by idealism.
I love big Grim's G1, War For Cybertron, 2015 Robots In Disguise, Power Of The Primes, and Cyberverse versions.
*I like Cyberverse's take on Grimlock. Sort of, and I do stress SORT OF reminds me of Hank McCoy aka The Beast from the "X-MEN" franchise.*
This proves that Grimlock's design is timeless
He was always one of my favourites. Like you said, robot dinosaur!
two small points; Worth noting that pre 2000's Grimlock's Dino mode was depicted as a godzilla-like "tail dragging" posture (it wasn't recognized this was an incorrect understanding of a tyrannosaurus biology until around the 1st jurassic Park's time. and b.) during the third season of the original G1 series during his "comic relief' phase, Grimlock only turned into Robot mode (I think) twice
G1 Grimlock: *Jurassic Park theme*
AoE Grimlock: *Harmonica version*
You mean the kazoo version.
Grimlock is my favorite. It's awesome
Grimlock is the only Transformers character who has appeared in all generations of the franchise. By that, I mean he was in every comic and cartoon. That is how popular he is
ME GRIMLOCK LOVE CHALLENGE!
Also, yes Armada, that is OBVIOUSLY Grimlock.
Absolutely he's simple but he's badass with his simplicity.
11:42 wait 6 dinosaurs combining to from one giant robot! Go Go Power Rangers!
At Botcon 2023, I asked Simon Furman who his favorite character was and he said grimlock without hesitation
I like to think characters like Grimlock and Sideswipe from Robots in Disguise took their names from their predecessors.
2015 Robots in Disguise Grimlock is always gonna be my nostalgia Grimlock, but I think Fall of Cybertron Grimlock is my all round favourite.
